News, News, News, News, News, News St Mary‟s Sprotbrough Annual Christmas Fayre Santa and Villagers brave the elements Santa was taking no chances with the weather when he travelled to St Mary‘s Christmas Fayre in Sprotbrough on Saturday 28th November 2009. To the delight of all awaiting him, he arrived on time in a big red Land Rover and declared the Fayre open. Then it was down to business, as he checked his presents and prepared to receive the 130 children who passed through the magnificent Grotto during the day. There was something for young and old alike at the Fayre including; cakes, tombola, books, CD‘s, 10 hampers raffle, handicrafts, gifts and a number of games.

News, News, News, News, News, News The new Safe Cracker was a hit with two folk cracking the combination to take away the cash inside! Business was brisk too over in the Stable and Barn where welcome refreshments and lunches were served. A huge ―thank you‖ to all who supported the Fayre and to those who worked tirelessly preparing such a wonderful event again. The Victorian themed Grotto was an absolute delight. Thanks too, Simon, for transporting Santa in the Land Rover. A great day was had by everyone, despite the weather and over £2500 was raised for Church Funds!

Richmond Hill Primary School Support CHILDREN IN NEED Richmond Hill pupils raised £266.60 for Children in Need. A big thank you to everyone who contributed. A special mention to Alanna Young in Y1B who did a sponsored bike ride and raised a total of £37.50! Well done!

The crime figures for Sprotbrough during the months of November and December have been quite encouraging. Touching wood, burglaries have been lower than at other times, as have thefts of and from motor vehicles. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this continues into the New Year! Of course, the crime figures could be even lower however, we're all a little un-thinking at times. Hearing reports of persons leaving their handbags or wallets in insecure vehicles, even momentarily, doesn't help the cause of trying to reduce crime. But, even when secured, it's sensible to remove items of value from your vehicle. If it's in view, it's always a temptation to any opportunist thief to break into your car! The same applies to property - your house, garage and shed. It takes moments for a burglar to enter insecure property and steal your valuables. You've spared him/her the hard part of having to force entry! But remember, it also only takes you a moment to lock your doors and prevent such a crime from occurring in the first place!

PC 3337 Lynne Walker Sprotbrough Community Beat Manager

I highlight these crimes purely to make residents aware that such incidents can and do happen in Sprotbrough. For fear of sounding like a hard task master, I don't want such crimes happening to you! Obviously, if burglars force their way into your property, through locked doors and windows, then that's a different matter. 'Cold callers' and 'bogus officials' are still a problem throughout the whole of Doncaster. These are the people who arrive un-expectedly on your doorstep and knock on your door. They're either selling something, offering to do work on your house or using distraction tactics to gain access into your home, to then steal. Recent reports in Sprotbrough highlight a company offering to fit free security alarms. Some of these callers may be quite innocent and legitimate but be careful who you let into your home. Remember, as the householder, you're in control of who you let into your house - you say whether or not you want to buy anything from them. Not all callers are criminals but the choice to engage with them is up to you. It could be a risk! Many people fear confrontation with 'cold callers' some don't find it easy to say 'no.' There's no need to be rude but there's nothing wrong either with declining their services and shutting the door on them! I've known people sign up to mobile phone deals with 'cold callers' at their door. Having given these 'strangers' their bank account details, they've later questioned whether it was a wise move. I've really no idea but I'd suggest that you make sure you're happy with the callers before you supply them with any important personal information. Perhaps the moral of the story is that, if you're not sure about it, don't do it - leave well alone. There are plenty of legitimate businesses and shops with which to trade. Fitting free security alarms sounds too good to be true to me! Once again, keep up the good work in Sprotbrough. The crime figures and our safety and security are relying on you all!

Nominations please for Flowers for Someone Special... Do you know someone special? Someone who has gone the extra mile for others or someone who just deserves something nice. The Arrow and Tracyâ€&#x;s Flowers in Balby would like to make that special persons day with a beautiful bouquet delivered to their door! Let us know who they are and why they deserve a bouquet. Contact Michelle Sidebottom by e-mail or call 01302 534256 to nominate. I would like to nominate my mum, Margaret Smith, as she has gone through so much in her life. Mum had tb when we were young and she lost a kidney and half her bladder. Mum has lost nearly all her eye sight through a blood clot and has had two knee replacements. However, she never complains, she organised a dance night at the Goldsmiths Centre and all the money raised went to cancer research. Mum puts music on every Saturday night with my dad at the British Legion club for people to dance to. My family flooded in 2007 and mum took us all in, at the time, mum found out she had breast cancer and had to have her breast removed and is now in remission with 3 years of treatment left to go. Mum is so brave and I think she deserves a special treat, she‘s always thinking of others and we love her so much, Sandra Burton.

New Year health advice for pet owners Now that Christmas is over, many of us may be feeling the effects of over indulgence during the festive period. January is traditionally a time when we think about joining the gym or going on a diet but owners should also be thinking about their pet‘s waistlines too. An overweight pet is just as serious as an overweight owner, but many are not even aware their pet may be carrying extra weight. The health implications for pets can also be very serious with both diabetes and arthritis linked to pet obesity. These conditions are manageable, especially if caught early, but making sure your pet is a healthy weight will significantly reduce the risk of them developing in the first place. At Vets4Pets in Doncaster we have been running an initiative called the Kilo Crunch Challenge, which aims to address the issue of pet obesity and offers overweight pets a free weight check along with diet and exercise advice to help achieve a target weight. The challenge has now come to an end but many thanks to everyone that entered, We will be announcing the practice winner soon. However, we are still committed to making sure owners have the help and advice they need to ensure their pets remain happy and healthy. Managing a pet‘s diet and exercise is a long term commitment and owners can still bring their pets in for free weight check consultations. Please ask in the practice for more details at Unit 2a, Wentworth Road, Wheatley, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, DN2 4DB or call 01302 556 868. Dear Reader, It‟s that time of year again when we are supposed to make our New Year Resolutions – it‘s okay making one, sticking to it is the problem! As a busy working Mum, this year mine is to have some ‗me time‘ - just a couple of hours each week will be enough - to keep me sane! Whether it‘s a treatment at the salon or reading a book or socialising, I don‘t mind, but I am determined to do it. That leads me perfectly to our well known annual New Year promotion ‗4-425‘. Choose 4 treatments from our list (see advert) and pay only £25 – an ideal answer to ‗me time,‘ don‘t you think? With January upon us we can often suffer generally from dehydration. Small wonder that it plays havoc with our skin, but especially our faces and nails.

What‘s on at the cinema or for rental... Review it here Its freezing, its winter, and after the frenzy of (Cinema) Christmas, you‟re looking for something different, this my friend is the film that will hit the spot for you. For countless people when they first premiered the trailer they perhaps concluded that this is just a children‘s film, nothing that will even survive on the screens further than a month, but when the music surges in like a bitter wind and we spectate the monumental characters exploring the mythical landscapes, we grow enthusiastic to perceive that Where the Wild Things Are will be reserved in our minds and not just regarded as a night out at the local cinema. The now 39 year old Spike Jonze has surprisingly minimal capability in directing a film, before this he only had a couple of music videos and the remotely stylish Adaptation accredited to his name. Is this an unacceptable concept you might hesitate to think? Definitely not as the result exceeds spectacular. The child that is Max always craves to acquire enjoyment in his life, he feels much wiser than the ones that confine him, and also possesses an endless imagination. After a miss out on supper the disobedient boy that is occasionally Max is appointed to go to his bed immediately, once there and as the night advances his surroundings begin to energize to life and abnormal creatures grasp him into the nightfall on an enchanting and inspiring journey. Most of the population will maintain the knowledge that this is an adaptation from a children‘s classic book penned by Maurice Sendak, which is just 48 pages in length. Accommodating spine tingling animation that will literally make you feel like your there, and a momentous sound track featuring the dynamic Arcade Fire and Karen O from the indie favourites Yeah Yeah Yeahs, you will find yourself impressed by what will be a treasure for generations to come, a new apex for filmmaking has been affirmed and this is an up to date reminder of what a staggering book it was, and still is.

Where The Wild Things Are

(500) days of Summer (DVD) Ever been in love with a person that hasn‘t expressed the equal feelings for you, your left hanging on hoping for a chance? Well then this is the perfect slice of entertainment for you. At the first exposure of Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel), Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) has fallen for what he summarizes as the girl of his dreams, sadly she rejects these feelings being complicated to apprehend and calmly modifies the direction of the two into a bit of cat and mouse, everything slowly cascades down hill which bewilders young Toms mind. I didn‘t enter this film with grand hopes my only expectations were for the actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt as his been present in such astounding projects as The Lookout and Brick which are both in my world neglected classics for our generation. His acting I feel has elevated to a new range as he is accompanied by the pleasant Zooey Deschanel (Surf‘s Up, Almost Famous). For me these two combined makes for an un beatable compound as they struggle their ways through the ups and downs of human emotions. We embrace Tom mostly scratching his head and challenging the theory of love during the entirety of the film, supplying us with some real life facts and thoughts. While Summer on the other hand teasefully tip toes her way out of trouble by representing the girl you just can‘t quite understand. Reviews by Andrew

Sprotbrough Road Community Church (Methodist)

The Family Table Welcome to the New Year, how quickly they fly by. Our Tables, yours and mine are changed now that the festivities are over, but let‘s not forget what we can still achieve around them. Our tables seem bare now that they‘re not laden with Christmas food, decorations or presents, but the memories are still there. Of course, we shouldn‘t forget the tables which haven‘t seen so much activity, there will be tables which haven‘t held shared moments. Let‘s not forget the people who have been alone for various reasons. We could spare some time out of our busy lives to share a cup of tea and 10 minutes chat just to make sure they‘re alright, and not just at Christmas or New Year but throughout the year. The Lord wants us to share our lives and tables all year through. So we could share the Spirit of Christmas all through the year. Just imagine how the World would be if we shared our food and friendship. Peace in the world has to start somewhere, let it be with us here in Sprotbrough. Let‘s start to share our homes and time with those who need a friend. Let‘s mend the rifts that have stayed with us for years, even families torn apart can mend if only everyone would let the Love of Christ our Savior shine through us all. There may be a few tables made from one solid piece of wood. Usually they have several parts, each leg joined at the top with joints that fit exactly. Sometimes the top is not just one piece, it may have a leaf to pull out or it may be a drop leaf, like mine. This is how Jesus the MASTER CRAFTSMAN wants us to be, joined together with His love, those are the joints that cannot be broken. As you know my table is not polished, but even with all the marks and spots it is beautiful to me. It has a warm feel about it. Wood calls to us to touch it just as our Savior calls us to reach out and hold the hand of our neighbour. God didn‘t make us to be alone. Come and Join Us, you can be sure of a warm welcome. I wish you all a wonderful 2010. Jean Scott

Doncaster Advanced Motorists

Don‟t be dim this winter

A Happy New Year to all our readers. Being able to see the road ahead to avoid danger and stop safely in an emergency is a necessity for all drivers, especially when driving in the hours of darkness. (Doncaster Advanced Motorists) offers the following tips on how to check and use vehicle lights in preparation for the short and dark days. Check the lights Regularly check that all lights work. While someone observes the lights around the car, switch on each light one-by-one: headlights, sidelights, fog lights, indicators, brake lights, reverse lights, hazard warning lights and number plate lights If alone, park by a reflective surface such as a garage door, illuminate all lights in sequence and look for the reflections Use the lights When away from street lighting, visibility is limited to the range of the headlights. This varies greatly between dipped and full-beam; slow down when driving on dipped headlights. Lights give motorists an early warning of each other‘s presence. Look for approaching lights when driving around corners, adjust the position of the vehicle accordingly and dip your own headlights to avoid dazzling other motorists If oncoming drivers forget to dip their lights, slow down and give your eyes time to adjust to avoid blindness. Never stay on full-beam to retaliate It is difficult to judge approaching speed in the dark so take extra care when making a manoeuvre and always allow traffic to pass when waiting to pull out at a junction The weather will also dictate when to use headlights and fog lights. Use fog lights sparingly; switch them on only when visibility is below 100 metres. Leaving them on after fog has disappeared is an offence and a danger to other motorists A general good rule of thumb is to switch on dipped headlights during heavy rain and poor light Never use lights to dazzle or cause discomfort to other road users – this is against the law If you are interested in further information regarding the courses that we offer, you‘ll be able to find this information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk or Tel: 020 8996 9600 Safe Driving.
