Wow, what a month April turned out to be, we’ve seen some beautiful sunshine getting us all in the holiday mood, then a volcano in Iceland goes and dampens the spirits! I had just returned from Jersey on the Tuesday so was very fortunate to have missed the chaos, however there were so many people stranded for over a week which must have felt like a month! Hopefully everyone is now safe at home. The volcano almost engulfed the election campaign with it stealing the headlines for over a week, however that‘s all changed now, with only a few days left till polling day (depending on when you received your magazine) it‘s all systems go for all the parties. Following the success of the last Garden Plant Sale at Auckley Parish Hall, there will be another held on Saturday 8th May. Be sure to visit if you missed the last one, these plants are all professionally grown. Stafforce Recruitment hold their 4th Annual Charity event at Hayfield Lakes on Sunday 6th June, all proceeds go to their chosen charities listed on page 6 along with all the planned events, this promises to be a fun day out for all the family and all in aid of very good causes. You may have noticed we now have Trax FM‘s logo on our front page as well as ‗Flowers for Someone Special‘ article. The Arrow and Trax FM have teamed up to bring more coverage of our news stories and local events to each area covered by the Arrow. Someone special will be broadcast from Trax FM each month on the radio, so please let me know if you have anyone special in mind! The deadline for the June issue of the Arrow which will also be delivered to Blaxton is Wednesday 19th May. Caroline Flint welcomes Hayfield Centre consultation A consultation into the design of the proposed £2.5million Hayfield Centre was welcomed by Caroline Flint. Ms Flint joined residents at Auckley Church Parish Hall to see the plans in more details and have a virtual tour of the planned centre. Said Caroline: ―Well done to the Hayfield Centre Steering Group for putting together this interactive exhibition. This centre will be a big step forward for indoor and outdoor sports, with cricket and football pitches and a four court sports hall. ―I am obviously proud that both Yorkshire Forward and the Government‘s Community Builders fund have committed a large part of the money, but other partners, such as Peel Airports are important to the success of this project.‖ The plans are due to go for planning approval shortly and building work m ay start as early as later this year. Said Caroline: ―This centre would be great for Auckley, Branton, Blaxton, Finningley ands the surrounding villages.‖ The Centre will also include workspaces for small businesses. News, News, News, News, News, News... I'm worried about Jim. The above words echoed out from the tape recorder and brought smiles to several members of The Tuesday group, who remembered fondly listening to Mrs Dales Diary on the radio. The tape was part of the reminiscence box called, ―Railway Families‖ which we had borrowed from Doncaster Museum Service. Other items included a whip and top, a prodder for rug making, railway memorabilia recalling train journeys in the age of steam and many other not quite forgotten items from our youths. As we each chose an item, which provoked personal memories, and talked about it there were many laughs and chuckles at remembered escapades, and although some of us could remember perhaps a little more than some, the meeting was thoroughly enjoyable. Perhaps a measure of the enjoyment was the fact that we were loath to stop chatting, even for our usual tea and biscuits, and people were slow to depart at the end of the meeting.

Finningley Tuesday Club The May meeting of Tuesday Club (on 25th May) will take the form of a visit to Potteric Carr Nature Reserve for a guided tour for which there will be a small charge. The time of departure has yet to be decided but will be earlier than the usual 1.45pm, please ring Cynthia Scully on 770992 for details. The summer outing, in conjunction with Friendship Group, is arranged for Monday 5th July and is going to the Yorkshire Lavender Fields and Eden Camp Museum. The bus fare is £8 plus £3.50 for Senior Citizens for Eden Camp payable on booking. A small fee for the Lavender Fields is payable on the day should you choose to see extra attractions. Labrador triumphs in pet weight loss initiative A two-year-old Labrador called Ruby has been crowned the Doncaster winner of the Kilo Crunch Challenge run by Vets4Pets after she lost an impressive 10.96% of her original body weight (4kg). Her owner, Mrs Margaret Thorpe, who has won a £50 diet pet food voucher, is delighted that Ruby‘s weight loss has been recognised. Mrs Thorpe said: ―As part of the Kilo Crunch Challenge, I was given prescription diet food to feed her twice a day and I also continued with the regular exercise. The practice was very supportive and able to answer any questions when I took her in for regular weight checks.‘ Rebecca Aldren, practice partner at Vets4Pets in Doncaster, said: ―Ruby did really well on the Kilo Crunch Challenge and I‘m delighted she has been crowned the practice winner. It‘s great to see owners taking the health of their pet seriously and Mr Thorpe‘s willingness to make changes to Ruby‘s lifestyle, was instrumental in her weight loss. Hopefully this new healthy regime will become a way of life for them both, helping to keep the weight off permanently.‖ The Kilo Crunch Challenge ran at Vets4Pets from 1 July to 31 December. Owners were encouraged to bring their cats and dogs into the practice for a free weight and health check, where, if necessary, they were given a weight loss target along with the appropriate diet and exercise advice. 4th Finningley Scout Group The scout group celebrated its 50th anniversary last year of being based in the local area. The group moved to the Hurst Lane site in Auckley in 1984 and continues to have a healthy troop consisting of 80 young people in Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers aged between 7 and 18 years of age. We are currently looking towards the next 50 years of scouting in our local community with great plans to build a new scout hall . The planning permission has been granted and the fundraising is going well as we have already raised £7,000 towards the new build. The hall is to be developed as a community resource with access for a range of community groups and events in addition to the Guide Pack that already uses the amenities. We are running a sponsored brick scheme as well as the annual duck race and sponsored events throughout the year to raise the money for this project. Lambing Live At Coneygarth Farm Day Nursery! Spring is a very exciting time at the Nursery, all the cows have now calved and these can be seen directly from the special viewing area from the Nursery to the farm. Lambing is now well underway! Many children have seen the lambs being born; this is a fantastic experience for them. Whilst witnessing the new life the children were actually silent whilst watching, which for us, is an amazing sight in itself! Of course a lot of questions were asked. The children from our sister nursery, Flying Start Day Nursery, based on Robin Hood Airport are having visits to the farm too. To try and bring the farm into the nursery we have installed a CCTV camera in the lambing shed, this is relayed back to flat screen TV within the nursery so the children can be aware of what is happening at all times! Once Lambing Live has finished we will place the cameras around the farm eg in the cow shed, the chicken run and hopefully strategically positioned a bird box.. Our next project is to get all the seeds and vegetables planted; all we are waiting for is warm sunny weather.

Since the Parish Plan was produced in March 2008 the Finningley Village Community Group, formerly The Parish Plan Group, has been trying to put together some form of community event and now we think we have the means.
Year groups 6,7,8,& 9 welcome
Thanks to the efforts of the many groups that meet within the village, children‘s groups, the School, the Church, Youth Club, Art and Social club, WI, Friendship Group, Tuesday Club etc and their willingness to get involved and take the idea forward, we are to hold a Fun Day in the Village Hall and surrounding grounds.
We have a tuck shop, crafts, games, music, ‘chilling area’ plus a Disco every 5/6 weeks! Membership is £5 (includes 1st week), then £2 per week. Organisers are Geoff Payne (who was a leader at St Saviours youth club) together with other leaders who all are CRB checked and approved as well as fully insured!

Saturday 10th July 2010. 11am until 4pm. Mark it in your diary now! That is the day we hope to have a good, social coming together for everyone, young, not so young and those of indeterminate age within the community.
The Harvey Arms has offered to get assist and has agreed to the car park being used for parking for the day. There will also be involvement from The Neighbourhood Safety Team, Neighbourhood Watch and FODSA. Obviously such an event takes some organising as insurance, First Aid cover, traffic issues etc all have to be considered, costed and the finance put in place. We have been very fortunate in that the Parish Council has backed our endeavours and has very generously granted the sum of £100 towards the expenses. However this does not meet the sum required and so the Community Group held a race night in The Harvey Arms in April to supplement the fund and has also submitted a funding application to a local funding group. It is hoped that this, initially small event, will form the basis of an annual ―do‖ which will go from strength to strength, providing for the village a social and enjoyable community occasion. News from Branton St Wilfrid’s C.E. Primary School Easter at Branton St Wilfrid’s is a very busy time, as you can see from the events below. Mass for Easter at St Wilfrid’s Church Everyone in school attended St Wilfrid’s Church to celebrate mass before Easter, and it was lovely to see so many parents, relatives, governors and friends of the school at the service. Our Year 6 children gave a presentation about the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, given from the donkey’s point of view (Eleanor in full donkey costume, complete with mask!). The photos show Jesus entering Jerusalem with crowds waving palm branches, whilst in the background two of the Pharisees start to plot against Jesus. Easter Prayer Journey On 25th March each class in school took part in a special morning activity to give children opportunity to take part in activities and have time for reflection about different parts of the Easter story. We spent time setting up six different locations around school for each class to visit to learn more about Palm Sunday, The Servant King (Jesus washing the feet of his disciples), the Last Supper, events in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus on the cross and the resurrection of Jesus. The children responded thoughtfully to the activities and gained a lot of understanding about the Easter story. Many thanks to Linda Gardner our Church Schools’ Worker, our governors Mrs Upton, Mrs Brown and Mr Elvin and Mrs Dilks who planned and led one of the activities each.

Well Done to Jubilate Club! Well done to our Year 5 and 6 children who attend our Jubilate Club every Monday after school. Our worship group prepared three wonderful assemblies covering Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday, and we were very pleased to be joined by so many parents, relatives, governors and friends of the school. The assemblies were creative, thought provoking, engaging and moving in equal measure. Many thanks to Mrs Dilks, our Class R teaching assistant, who leads our Jubilate Club with such energy, flair and commitment.
Easter Crafts Pictured above are some of the children in the Infants with their Easter cards and baskets. The children in Classes R, 1 and 2 were very excited on the final afternoon before the Easter holiday to discover that the Easter bunny had left chocolate eggs in their Easter baskets! Thank you to the PTA! We are very fortunate to have such an active and supportive Parent Teacher Association in school. On the last day of the Spring term each class enjoyed taking part in an ‘Easter Egg Hunt’ in the school grounds, followed by an Infant disco and Junior disco in the evening. News from Hayfield Lane Primary School It has been a very busy term as always at Hayfield Lane with a variety of activities, visits and our normal curriculum work taking place. Residential Visit to Hardelot, France At the end of March we took 34 of our Year 5 and Year 6 children to a small town on the north coast of France called Hardelot. We were there from Monday to Friday and had an absolutely fantastic time. The children were given a chance to sample French daily life, find out first hand what it is like to live in France and sample first hand French culture. There were many other things on our itinerary to excite both children and staff! The Bakery - The children visited a very small local bakery where they were shown the whole process of making bread French style. This included having the opportunity to make a croissant and a pain au chocolat. The Generation Game had nothing on us! The V2 Bunker- One of the visits which stays with the children for a long time is the visit that we make to the forest of Eperleques just outside the town of St. Omer. Deep in the forest the Germans built the most enormous bunker from which to launch their dreaded V2 rockets. The children are told how the bunker was built by many prisoners of war and how hard it was for them. They are also told about how the allies found the bunker and began to bomb it in order to stop production of the rockets. Finally, it is explained by film that in actual fact the scientists involved were also some of the same people who worked on the first space rockets in the USA and this was in fact the beginnings of the race into space. The Chocolate Factory- This has to be one of the highlights for staff and pupils! The tiny chocolate factory at Besseunt is a sight to see indeed. It is run by one man and his trusted workers who produce some of the finest hand made chocolates ever! The children were shown what a cocoa pod looks like and where they are grown. They are shown the beans and how they are transformed into chocolate – which they then got to taste! The Cheese Farm – Another highlight of the visit for the children as this is also a very small place run by husband and wife and full of animals which the children were able to get very close to. It gave the children a good idea of how hard the work is on a farm and how you are busy for many hours in the day. The children were also shown the whole process involved in making cheese and the of course had chance to sample! All the children and the staff had a fantastic week in France. As always on school visits our children behaved impeccably and received so many compliments about their behavior and manners throughout the week. The staff were very proud of them as we also were with the amount of French that they used whilst there. Excellent les enfants de Hayfield Lane.

Speed Day - Following on from Joel Gooderham’s plea to our School Council to do something about the traffic outside our school going too fast a protest day was organised with a huge amount of support from the local police. All the children in school made posters to show motorists as they drove past school. Year 5 made leaflets to hand out to motorists who were caught travelling at more than the statutory 30 mph explaining the dangers of speeding past a school. It was a very successful day with many motorists stopped by the police and then questionned by the children. Please watch your speed, they might be out there again! Competition Winners – We were very pleased indeed when we found out that our school had won the cycle challenge posed by Sustrans a transport charity. The challenge was to cycle the equivalent of 2,170 miles the distance from Doncaster to Lapland and without even leaving the local area. The children taking part logged mileage points each time they cycled to and from school. An average of 31 of our children cycled to school each day and in some really bad weather. Our reward in school was a first class demonstration by stunt bike champions Ben Slinger and Danny Butler. It was an amazing demonstration of some incredible moves on bikes. Easter Bonnet Competition- What a fantastic way to finish the term. Every class in the school took part and there were many entries from each class. Our celebrity judge, Revd. Redeyoff had taken up the challenge of what must have been his most difficult job of the day. Well done to all those who took part and a huge thank you to our judge.

News from Auckley Junior, Infant and Nursery School Science Week Special! The summer term is now underway and this is always a busy time for us in school as we have lots of things to fit in to the term in addition to the curriculum; trips, sports day and concerts to name but a few. Whilst this can be challenging it is also extremely rewarding as we try to make school as an enjoyable experience as possible for all our children and their families. Science Week Once again we had a fantastic time during science week. The theme this year was ‘Recycling and the Environment’ and there were lots of activities for the children to take part in. Here are some of the highlights from the week. F1 (Nursery) made sock puppets out of odd socks and bits and pieces they could find. Along with F2 (Reception) they also created their own musical instruments and took part in the planting of bulbs and seeds. Year 3/4 have been enjoying work based around Alice in Wonderland and science week provided the opportunity to vary the traditional ‘Mad Hatter’s Tea Party’ with a ‘Mad Trasher’s Tea Party’! This involved making their own hats out of recycled materials which they then showed off during their (not too mad) class tea party.

Year 4/5 and Year 6 also embraced the opportunity to get creative by designing and then making their own ‘Trash Fash’ - clothing made from recycled materials. The children really let their imaginations run wild and there were some fantastic creations using all manner of objects including plastic milk bottle tops, tin cans, coloured pencils and CDs! KS2 had their design skills put to the test with
the Knex challenge which was to construct a windmill, complete with moving parts. The children did very well with the task which also required good cooperative and problem solving abilities. We had several visitors in during the week and one of the highlights was David Garlovski, in association with Sheffield Hallam University, who came in to run a family workshop on solar cars. The initial task was for both children and adults to construct a car which could be solar powered and then everyone went out onto the playground where they had great fun racing them!

The Butterfly Farm Year 3/4 had a lovely day when they went to the Butterfly Farm at North Anston as part of their topic on rainforests. As well as looking at all the different creatures the children took part in workshops about the rainforest environment and life cycles. Easter Egg Competition Following the success of our first decorated egg competition last year, we decided to make this an annual event. The competition was even fiercer this year with some fantastic entries; spider eggs, alien eggs, footballer eggs - we even had ‘eggstreme sports eggs’! The judges had a very difficult task but after much deliberation a winner and runner up were chosen from each class. They each received an Easter egg and are pictured here with their eggsellent (sorry, couldn’t resist!) creations.
An ongoing project throughout the week was the construction of a wigwam made out of unwanted wheel trims! Thank you to Dave and Linda Wade who very kindly gave up their time to build it. The children all enjoyed watching their progress – and playing in it afterwards! We would also like to thank Peter Lambert from Doncaster council who came in to help dig out some of the banking near the playground. This was done in preparation for planting lavender to spell out ‘Auckley’ which will be an attractive addition the outdoor area. Thank you also to Miss Gilson who organised this informative and thoroughly enjoyable week.

The Finningley maps of 1639 and the 1800s were in reverse order, I know most of you worked this out for yourselves. Feed back from that article on the ancient village of Finningley has been excellent.
Cantley and Branton Cricket Club Well I did not know there ever was such a club, but I do know that a few years ago some locals did try to get a local Auckley/Branton Cricket Club going, but sadly they got no support from our local Parish Councils, since it was considered such a club using public land might impinge on other activities. How delightful it would have been to have had our own local club, that would have provided so many wonderful sunny afternoons entertainment, for local families. The reason for my interest is a letter I recently received from Don Fox I quote as follows; „I was born in Branton and lived there until I was 18 and went off to University, only returning to visit family and friends occasionally. However, since I retired I have been putting a lot of time and effort into researching our family history and recently came across a prize my father, Archie Fox, won for batting from the Branton and Cantley Cricket Club in 1929. It is a silver plated matchbox holder. This set me to thinking about the club and whether it is still in existence. Certainly it was still operational in about 1960, because I occasionally played there, but I suspect that it may have gone out of existence when the big housing estate was built. The club had a pitch within the grounds of (I think) Cantley Manor, on the other side of Church Lane from St Wilfrids Church. The grounds had some very fine mature trees, including one at the corner of the cricket square. The owner of Cantley Manor (who I think was called Mr Davies) would not allow this tree to be felled. This gave rise to a local rule that if the batsman struck the ball into the tree he gained a score of 2 and the ball became dead, .i.e. you could not be caught as the ball fell out of the tree.‟ Don is requesting information anyone has about this club, so if anyone has any photos memories or written evidence, please contact me and I will copy it and pass it on.

The Matchbox Holder Prize won by Archie Fox in 1929
Bird Life Glyn Shooter reports that there is still at least one pair of Buzzards flying and possibly breeding in our locality. We can expect to hear the call of the Cuckoo anytime now. Of the Cuckoo, Enid Blyton said; „When the springtime comes, we look for the first swallow, we hunt for violets on the river banks, we gather the dancing wind-flowers, and we listen eagerly for the first “Cuckoo! Cuckoo!”. Although we love to hear the cuckoo calling and give him a great welcome, he does not really deserve it. He is a strange bird, with strange habits, a bird “gone wrong”. He cannot help his habits now, poor thing, for he is born with them, but at some time, far away in the past, there was a time when he could choose between goodness and badness, and alas! he chose the wrong path. And now all our cuckoos are forced to follow the same downward path.‟ The Sand Martins started arriving in our locality in the middle of March, it appears no one told them that Spring was late coming to Britain this year. We are awaiting the arrival of the House Martins, Swallows and of the elegant Swifts. On my housing Estate Poppyfields, Branton, I have been pleased to see that fewer property owners are putting up strips of polythene to deter the House Martins from nesting in the eves of their houses. A swooping House Martin aware that these birds do make a lot of mess, but these birds travel thousands of miles to get here, and to find their last years home destroyed and access to make a new one restricted must be unbearable, however, these birds have survived and still each year manage to raise their young on the Poppyfields Estate. Throughout the late spring and summer months the sight of these wonderful House Martins, swooping and flying over the Estate collecting flying insects is a joy to behold.
Branton House History Query Cynthia Scully has called for some historical information of a house in Branton, can you help? There is a house , built I would imagine at the turn of the 19th-20th century, which looks away from the main road instead of towards it. It is on the right journeying from Doncaster, after the row of terraced houses and two bungalows, why is it situated this way?‘

Doncaster Advanced Motorists Pedestrians Usually Appear In Peripheral Vision Dear Readers, The visibility of pedestrians at night is a complex phenomenon. A Driver can only avoid accident if he sees a pedestrian relatively far ahead. The driver must detect the pedestrian, recognize the impending collision, and then react by pressing the brakes. Suppose a driver is traveling at 60 mph (88 feet per second) and suddenly sees a pedestrian. Normal reaction time is about 1.5 seconds. During this time, the car will have moved forward 132 feet (1.5 x 88). Cars don‘t stop instantaneously, however, so the vehicle continues forward after brake depression until friction halts all motion. This would require another 150 feet and take about 2.8 seconds. As a result, the driver must see the pedestrian 280 feet and 4.3 seconds in advance. At a speed of 35 mph, the stopping distance is still 138 feet and the stopping time is 3.6 seconds. These calculations also assume good conditions. The requirements increase when the road is wet, the vehicle is heavier (a fully loaded tractor trailer can take 400 feet or more), the terrain slopes downhill or the driver‘s reaction time is slowed by age, alcohol, fatigue or distraction. (Using a mobile phone.) The driver is usually looking directly ahead. The pedestrian must be seen in peripheral vision because there is an angle between the driver‘s direction of gaze and the pedestrian‘s location. The pedestrian is hard to detect because people are much poorer at seeing objects off the direct line-of-sight. The eye has lower peripheral acuity and visual attention is usually concentrated where the viewer fixates – directly ahead. Attention becomes more focused ahead when visibility conditions are poor or traffic is heavy
LEARN TO DRIVE WITH
The driver will most likely detect the pedestrian only if there is an eye movement to the right or left. This may occur by chance or if the pedestrian is highly conspicuous for some reason, but drivers are usually looking for pedestrians only at likely locations. Drivers won‘t expect to see pedestrians in rural roads or other areas where they have learned through experience that pedestrians are unlikely to appear. For example, three quarters of the pedestrians killed in road accidents are hit outside of crossings, probably because drivers do not expect them there. Colours I‘ve recently returned from a break in the Lake District. The sun shone, the rain stayed away, and the whole realm of nature seemed to be awakening. Birds were nesting, trees budding, lambs gambolled in lush green fields, Wordsworth‘s daffodils displayed their vibrant colours, and mirror like lakes reflected rugged fells and blue skies. All around, this thing we call nature, was waking up. Interestingly, there were other colours sprouting in the Revd, Neil Redeyoff with his family fields. Some were large, others small, they clustered together or remained solitary. They stood in colour groups, or sometimes mixed together. The majority bore their original design, however, mankind felt it could do better and had redesigned a few! There stood splashes of yellow/orange, blue and red, with the occasional green, or white. Another phenomenon was coming to life! One that had lain dormant for a number of years…the political animal was slowly awakening from its slumbers. It‘s often said that you shouldn‘t discuss religion and politics, well I‘m going to! Elections are a great opportunity for debate and for raising big questions in church and society. At the moment though confidence in politics, and politicians, is at a low ebb, and there is a real danger that many people simply won‘t vote. So I thought the live television debate with the main party leaders was a great initiative. It raised the profile of the election and created some interesting debate – both during and after. In a further attempt to raise the profile I‘ve been asked by the Bishop of Sheffield to ensure that our church bells are rung at the start of polling, and again in the early evening. The bishop writes, “The bells are an alarm and a call to prayer which can sound in every Arms not long enough? community about the importance of cherishing our freedom and our democracy.” As we consider who we should vote for, perhaps I could share points for consideration and prayer: The need to address the inequality in Britain. The need to protect the vulnerable during times of economic hardship. The need for responsible stewardship for the environment. The need to affirm the Millennium Development goals and our global context. Affirming that men and women are more than consumers with choices and self interest: we are citizens with responsibilities. The need to challenge extremism based on racial or ethnic prejudice.
