Editors letter...

Wow, what a month April turned out to be, we‟ve seen some beautiful sunshine getting us all in the holiday mood, then a volcano in Iceland goes and dampens the spirits! I had just returned from Jersey on the Tuesday so was very fortunate to have missed the chaos, however there were so many people stranded for over a week which must have felt like a month! Hopefully everyone is now safe at home. The volcano almost engulfed the election campaign with it stealing the headlines for over a week, however that‘s all changed now, with only a few days left till polling day (depending on when you received your magazine) it‘s all systems go for all the parties. Sprotbrough staged a superb debate at St Mary‘s Church Hall in April, read all about it if you missed it! Doncaster‘s Bunny run in aid of Safe@last raised over £3000 for the charity, the day was a bit grey, but there was still a good turnout with lot‘s of Bunny Ears to be seen! The deadline for the June issue is Wednesday 19th May, thanks again to everyone who continues to send articles and information on a regular basis.

Young people help stop underage drinking!

Year 11 pupils from local schools across Doncaster have been helping police with knife and alcohol test purchase operations. Over the last 18 months there have been over 50 test purchase operations across Doncaster using year 11 pupils. During these operations, the underage students have attempted to buy alcohol and knifes from premises across Doncaster. By using the students, police have been able to identify the premises that are selling to underage people and work alongside them to reduce these sales and where necessary prosecute them. They have worked with the effected premises to introduce preventative measures such as queuing systems, ID checks and staff being more alert and aware. This in turn has helped to reduce the number of young people drinking on the streets or being in possession of a knife and causing antisocial behaviour. Two of the young volunteers have been awarded a commendation from South Yorkshire Police for their contributions to the operations. Matthew Wilkinson, 15- years-old from Balby Carr Community College and Chelsea Ridge, 17-years-old from Hall Cross Comprehensive school were presented the award by Superintendent Tim Innes (photograph above). He praised them for their continued efforts and dedication to helping the police put a stop to underage sales. Children and Young Person officer (CYPO) PC Pete Hartshorne said: ―The reason these two young people were put forward for the award was their dedication, willingness and the professional way they had performed during the operations. Both of them conducted themselves up and above expectations often turning out at short notice and in inclement weather‖. ―Without the help of young people we would not be able to conduct this type of operation to combat illegal sales of knives and alcohol to young people‖. Out of the ten off licences tested in Thorne and Moorends, only two served alcohol to a person under the age of 18. Both of the premises were issued with a fine and referred to Doncaster Council licensing department. Police Sergeant Stuart Rowse from the Thorne and Moorends SNT said: ―We hope these operations highlight the dangers of selling to underage people and put a stop to this. We will continue to monitor the off licences and work with our partners to respond to the concerns of the local people.‖

Sprotbrough Quizzes Candidates Including a Cabinet Minister!

From left to right : Sophie Brodie, Ed Miliband, Revd Stephen Gardner (Chair), Ed Sanderson, Wayne Crawshaw On Sunday 18 April 2010 there was a full house at St Mary‟s Church Hall when four of the Parliamentary candidates for the Don Valley constituency attended a Hustings meeting. Sophie Brodie, the Conservative was the first to speak for five minutes, followed by Wayne Crawshaw the English Democrat. Then Ed Miliband the Labour candidate had his turn; Ed Sanderson the Liberal Democrat was last to make a presentation. These were all timed with a stopwatch, and no-one overran their time! They then all faced questions from the electors gathered in the hall. As they came in each person was invited to write down a question, and these were then handed to the Chair, the Revd Stephen Gardner, who selected which one to put. Each candidate had two minutes to answer, turn by turn, timed by the same stopwatch. Two hours might seem a long time but it passed very rapidly, each answer being given due attention by the audience. There were a number of young people present who seemed to be evaluating each answer with some care. It is not often Sprotbrough people are given the chance to put their questions to a Cabinet minister even if in writing, and a wide range of topics were covered. National issues headed the list – the EU, rehabilitation of prisoners, care of the elderly, trafficking, education – but a number of local issues were raised – local transport, the aftermath of the floods and lack of craft skills by young workers, the role of faith communities.

A full house!

One person asked whether the candidates would live in Doncaster North if elected. The answer was Yes, in three of the four cases. The exception would live in Warmsworth! For the first time all of Sprotbrough is in the one constituency (that‘s a result of boundary changes), and it is certain that Sprotbrough people will be able to cast their votes with a greater knowledge as a result of this Hustings. It was arranged by Churches Together in Sprotbrough, an organisation encouraging cooperation amongst the churches in Sprotbrough. On the committee are representatives of Methodist, Anglican, Roman Catholic, Salvation Army and Society of Friends. The group strongly felt that, without supporting any political party, it should encourage careful consideration of the issues by the electorate. Anyone present would agree that the encouragement had worked. By Victor Hext

Labrador triumphs in pet weight loss initiative A two-year-old Labrador called Ruby has been crowned the Doncaster winner of the Kilo Crunch Challenge run by Vets4Pets after she lost an impressive 10.96% of her original body weight (4kg). Her owner, Mrs Margaret Thorpe, who has won a £50 diet pet food voucher, is delighted that Ruby‘s weight loss has been recognised. Mrs Thorpe said: ―As part of the Kilo Crunch Challenge, I was given prescription diet food to feed her twice a day and I also continued with the regular exercise. The practice was very supportive and able to answer any questions when I took her in for regular weight checks.‘ Rebecca Aldren, practice partner at Vets4Pets in Doncaster, said: ―Ruby did really well on the Kilo Crunch Challenge and I‘m delighted she has been crowned the practice winner. It‘s great to see owners taking the health of their pet seriously and Mr Thorpe‘s willingness to make changes to Ruby‘s lifestyle, was instrumental in her weight loss. Hopefully this new healthy regime will become a way of life for them both, helping to keep the weight off permanently.‖ The Kilo Crunch Challenge ran at Vets4Pets from 1 July to 31 December. Owners were encouraged to bring their cats and dogs into the practice for a free weight and health check, where, if necessary, they were given a weight loss target along with the appropriate diet and exercise advice. Skincare Make up Nails Skincare Make up Nails Dear Reader, Wow! Easter is over, Spring is officially here, and we are already in April! Apart from the hope of better weather, it’s quite scary how time flies! Responding to the warmer weather is the theme of this month’s beauty page.

It is important to wear a sun block with a factor 30 everyday.

Even in winter the UVA rays can be very damaging, but it is paramount that, as soon as the sun shines, a good quality protection product is used.

Sun Protection Products TRANSDERMAL SUNBLOCK A double strength sun block that protects the skin from damaging ultraviolet A and B rays, formulated with a water-resistant base that is non-greasy. Perfect for acned, oily skin as well as dry, dehydrated mature skin. It can be used over all DANNÉ products and effectively under makeup. Unique functions and benefits: The secret behind the DANNÉ sunblock is that it is TRANSDERMAL The DANNÉ sunblock is light, fresh and disappears into the skin with no smell. Can be used over all DANNÉ crèmes, sprays and serums without feeling heavy. Key ingredients: Titanium Diowxie Benzophenone Allantoin

Another way to protect the skin from harmful, ageing sun rays is by choosing the correct foundation. My recommendation would be the infamous mineral makeup

Bare Escentuals- Discover why millions of women are going "bare" with the award-winning foundation that started the mineral makeup revolution. Made with pure, crushed minerals from the earth, bareMinerals SPF 15 Foundation looks like a powder, feels like a cream and buffs on like silk, giving skin a natural luminosity. Free of preservatives, talc, oil, waxes, fragrances, and other chemicals that can irritate skin and cause breakouts, it’s ideal for all skin types and conditions, from sensitive skins to acne and rosacea. Our weightless, silky minerals give you flawless coverage with the amazing look and sensation of radiant bare skin. Plus, it provides natural SPF 15 broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection. Sprotbrough Road Community Church (Methodist) The Family Table Once more we celebrated on Palm Sunday with Ted the Donkey leading us on our walk, we waved our palm fronds and sang lots of Easter songs. It was such a happy day, praising God, with high hopes of what Jesus has done and will always do for us. We had a good many people from all the Sprotbrough Churches on the walk, then we joined together at the Goldsmith Centre for a drink and a bun. Even Ted had some carrots and peppermints before he went home. Palm Sunday was very special for Jesus and His Disciples. They were looking forward to sharing a meal in Jerusalem, in the upper room, at a long table where they could relax and celebrate the Feast of the Passover as a family. There are so many times we can come together around a table, it binds us together just like a family. When a family has something to celebrate, Weddings, Christenings, Birthdays etc. we try so hard to attend, we pull out all the stops to be there for that special day. There is nothing like the joy of seeing the smiles on faces you haven‘t seen for a while. The noise levels can be tremendous. This is how it would have been on Palm Sunday with Jesus and His friends. The crowds were waving their palm branches the same way we did, they were in a joyous mood, singing and dancing in praise to their King. The shock of the events of Easter week must have been very hard for the people close to Jesus. From joy to sorrow in one week, then they realised Jesus had been resurrected on the third day. And when Jesus ascended to heaven to be with His Father, he made it possible for us to join Him in heaven for eternity. What a celebration there will be on that day. Did you remember the story of Jesus being raised from death to a new life, on Easter Sunday while you were eating your Easter Eggs? And knowing the story, did you smile when you realised that we can share a special meal at His Table when we take Communion with Him now, on this earth, and one day in heaven? Many thanks to those who joined us for a meal at the Newton Inn on Good Friday. We watched the Jesus video of the Easter Story, sharing our tables with friends and neighbours, sharing our thoughts of Jesus, remembering how much He loves us and how much we love Him. I hope you had a wonderful Easter. See you next month at the Table. Jean Scott

Pedestrians Usually Appear In Peripheral Vision

Doncaster Advanced Motorists

Dear Readers, The visibility of pedestrians at night is a complex phenomenon. A Driver can only avoid accident if he sees a pedestrian relatively far ahead. The driver must detect the pedestrian, recognize the impending collision, and then react by pressing the brakes. Suppose a driver is traveling at 60 mph (88 feet per second) and suddenly sees a pedestrian. Normal reaction time is about 1.5 seconds. During this time, the car will have moved forward 132 feet (1.5 x 88). Cars don‘t stop instantaneously, however, so the vehicle continues forward after brake depression until friction halts all motion. This would require another 150 feet and take about 2.8 seconds. As a result, the driver must see the pedestrian 280 feet and 4.3 seconds in advance. At a speed of 35 mph, the stopping distance is still 138 feet and the stopping time is 3.6 seconds. These calculations also assume good conditions. The requirements increase when the road is wet, the vehicle is heavier (a fully loaded tractor trailer can take 400 feet or more), the terrain slopes downhill or the driver‘s reaction time is slowed by age, alcohol, fatigue or distraction. (Using a mobile phone.) The driver is usually looking directly ahead. The pedestrian must be seen in peripheral vision because there is an angle between the driver‘s direction of gaze and the pedestrian‘s location. The pedestrian is hard to detect because people are much poorer at seeing objects off the direct line-ofsight. The eye has lower peripheral acuity and visual attention is usually concentrated where the viewer fixates – directly ahead. Attention becomes more focused ahead when visibility conditions are poor or traffic is heavy The driver will most likely detect the pedestrian only if there is an eye movement to the right or left. This may occur by chance or if the pedestrian is highly conspicuous for some reason, but drivers are usually looking for pedestrians only at likely locations. Drivers won‘t expect to see pedestrians in rural roads or other areas where they have learned through experience that pedestrians are unlikely to appear. For example, three quarters of the pedestrians killed in road accidents are hit outside of crossings, probably because drivers do not expect them there. If you are interested in further information regarding the courses that we offer you will be able to find this information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk or Tel:020 8996 9600
