Welcome to the September issue of Haxey and Westwoodside Arrow. It’s being a hard year for students with the pandemic, zoom lessons and the uncertainty of knowing if they will sit exams or not. We do hope all your hard work paid off when collecting your GCSE and A level results. I know as a parent myself the anticipation and anxiety at these times are great. Even if the results were not what you expected, it's good to remember this is just a steppingstone in life and everyone has a future! This year has been a tough year for everybody whether it’s your own personal wellbeing, holding down your job, running your own business, running a charity, or trying to keep some normality going, holding local events. We have the Isle of Axholme Car and Vehicle Show at the Epworth Show ground on 12th September. Please show your support, looks a great family event. The deadline for the October issue is Friday 10th September for delivery by Wednesday 1st October. Enjoy the read and stay safe!

Humberside Police - Youth Independent Advisory Group We are pleased to announce a new opportunity for young adults aged 16 – 24 to get involved with Humberside Police and support their communities. In order to better understand how we can work with our communities we are inviting young adults to join our Youth Independent Advisory Group (Youth IAG). The aim is to involve young adults on a voluntary basis as part of these groups. We are looking to involve members from all communities that cover the Humberside Police geographical area all the way from Bridlington to Goole to Scunthorpe and Immingham. Who can be part of the Youth IAG? Youth IAG members are members of the public who have an interest in how policing works and how this impacts on their community. Members are not expected to be a spokesperson for any particular group of people but should bring their own personal experiences and perspectives to the Youth IAG. In order to help us better understand our communities IAG’s should have members reflecting the diversity of the local people that Humberside Police serve which may include the following areas (but not limited to): -
Age Disability Gender Geography Isolated communities
Race Religion or Belief Sexual Orientation Socio-economic status
The Youth IAG helps give young people a voice and the chance to inform and shape how we support those who live in the Humberside Area. We are keen to make sure the Youth IAG is representative of all our communities so welcome young people from all backgrounds and who share the aims of the Youth IAG which are to: -
Create and encourage an open discussion with our diverse communities Provide young adults with the opportunity to help shape how we support everyone in the Humberside Area
Get young people involved in developing our policies and procedures and make them suitable for all Improve how we work with young adults across the force Give young people the skills to help them work with us to create resilient communities
Provide young adults with the chance to speak freely and act as a “critical friend” and help us improve and grow alongside our communities If you would like further information please contact your local Community Cohesion Officer PC 1264 Gul or SPOCYouthIAG@humberside.pnn.police.uk

Beginners Bridge Club We are a small group of affable people who like to play friendly non-competitive Bridge from beginner level upwards. We would really like more members to bolster this new club, meeting on Thursday afternoons at the Thurlow Pavillion in Epworth. Each time we have a short teaching session, followed by quite a lot of not too serious playing. Bridge is a card game that can be as difficult (or as easy) as you want to make it, but it isn’t a black art .... it can be played as a casual card game or as an intellectual challenge, and sometimes phychic powers can be useful too! The game is all about partnership & needs some concentration, but you don’t need to be an expert to play. Even if you’ve never played before we can show you the basics & get you playing almost straight away. Although it helps if you have a regular partner you can come on your own & we will find you a partner. If you want to come, then you will need to join our club. Whatever your card playing abilities you will be made most welcome. lease e-mail isleplaybridge@gmail.com for more details

Belton and Epworth Cub Scouts Achieve Highest Award Possible but More Help Needed On a warm summer’s night in July, Molly, Joseph, Jayden, Abi and Oscar, all aged between 8 and 10 and a half, were presented with the highest honour Cub Scouts can achieve, the Chief Scout’s Silver Award. It can only be gained by a Cub who completes each of the World, Personal, Skills, Adventure, Outdoor, Teamwork, and Team Leader Challenge Badges, as well as at least six Activity or Staged Activity Badges and takes around 2-years to achieve. Even more amazing is that the group continued to work towards the award despite moving to meetings over Zoom and making dens in their bedroom instead of in the forest. The group were given their prestigious award, with certificates to follow in the post, on the night by Leader Jane Large who said, “It’s an absolute pleasure to give out this award, you’ve all done a marvellous job and I’ve enjoyed working with you all.” Unfortunately Ellis, who had also achieved his award, couldn’t make the event. The group will now have the opportunity to work towards their Gold Award as they move up to Scouts in September. There were big goodbyes and bigger congratulations as the Cub Scouts celebrated their achievement with pass the parcel and hotdogs in the picturesque setting of Primrose Hill Scout Camp in Scunthorpe, where the group spend each summer term. From September, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts will once again be based at Belton Pavilion, with sessions taking place each Tuesday evening during term time. Jane says, “I’ve been a Leader for 2-years and was previously an Assistant Leader for five. Right now, each section of the Scouts, from Beavers upward, could really do with more adult volunteers. Even if you can’t come every week, we’d be happy to talk about part time opportunities.” Before retirement, Jane had previously worked with children with special needs, but she says there’s no skill or ability needed. Just the want to work with children and to go through a DBS check. She said, “All our volunteers love the reward of seeing the children grow, learning new skills yourself and being a part of the community. Plus, we offer training also, so come along and learn how to get the best out of adults and young people.” For parent helpers Jo Dent and Emma Gill, their Tuesday evenings aren’t just about the children, they enjoy new experiences themselves too. Emma said, “It’s so nice to come here because there’s a sense of freedom in the forest and we get to experience things we’re not used to doing. I’ve learned so many life skills, Jane has a wealth of experience that she’s able to share and plus, it gets the kids away from screens.” Jo agrees, “The children learn together in groups of 6 where they have the opportunity to learn leadership skills and meet others from different backgrounds. I’d say being a part of Scouts has something to offer for anyone plus as a Mum of two boys, I get a chance to spend time with both girls and boys which is great.” Looking around the woods they both agree, there’s not many groups that have access to places like this. If you’re interested in helping out with Beavers, Cubs or Scouts, please email Jane Large at beltonandepworthcubs@outlook.com. Beavers, Cubs and Scouts return to Belton Pavilion on Tuesday 7th September.

1st Belton and Epworth Scouts Raise Over £1000 Through 10-Mile Sponsored Walk Around Scunthorpe It’s not just the Cubs and Beavers that have had a busy week as last weekend the Scouts took part in a 10mile hike to raise much-needed funds for important activities and equipment. While the group at 1st Belton and Epworth Scouts had decided on other ways to raise money, such as a car wash, litter picking and a cake sale, due to Covid restrictions first up was the 10-mile sponsored walk around Scunthorpe’s Ironstone Way. Despite only setting out with an initial hope of raising £600, or £50 per person, the group of 12 has gone on to smash their target, with an incredible £1,140 donated already. Most of which has already gone towards several new tents, Autumn Camp, other activities and a fun day out at Hatfield Water Park. Leader John Anderton believes it’s the most amount of money ever raised by the group in one go and has gone one further by promising the Scouts that he will walk the 50-mile Peatlands Way next weekend to continue their fundraising efforts. John said, “The Scouts have done a phenomenal job in raising money for activities and equipment by completing a sponsored 10-mile walk. As a community group, we wanted to make sure that we were visible in the community, either fundraising or by doing a volunteering commitment. Sadly, during the pandemic we were unable to do anything like this due to various lockdowns. “Our current equipment looks a little tired and needed replacing to make sure that the camp continues to stay enjoyable and fun. Plus, the Scouts want to earn more badges through external activities and sadly the subs charged don’t always cover that. The sponsored walk will go towards their fundraising badge as they have planned an event, raised money and seen it through.” Scouting opportunities are currently open to boys and girls aged between 10 ½ and 14-years old. For more information on what the Scouts do next and to keep sponsoring the group through their activities you can find out more information via their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/1stBeltonEpworthScouts and fundraising page: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/beltonandepworthscouts or email: beltonandepworthscouts@outlook.com

It's been a busy end to the school year here at Haxey, with lots going on to keep us all busy! In June, we all enjoyed a socially distanced sports day - it was a different event to normal as parents could not attend, but we managed to get together as Key Stages and had separate upper school and lower school events. It was a great success and so much fun to get out on the field for a full range of races in the sun. Our Year 6 pupils - as always - did an amazing job of organising all the races and were fab cheerleaders! Thank you to The Wonderful Years for our photos. Year 2 had a great day designing and making cars, exploring different cams and wheel mechanisms. The look of the end product was also a key factor and we had some very impressive creations, ranging from unicorn wagons and bat-mobiles to shark cars! Most importantly, all vehicles passed the playground track test and there was some absolutely amazing teamwork form our children in Year 2 . Well done, everyone! Years 5 and 6 have been exploring the work of William Shakespeare, and found that they enjoyed "Romeo and Juliet" and "MacBeth" much more than they had ever believed they could. Year 5 have even written their own versions of "Romeo and Juliet" - we look forward to seeing "Ron and Julie" on the stage soon! And in Year 3, there has been a lot of excitement around the "Can you build an exploding volcano" challenge. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone within the Haxey Primary family for their support and flexibility this year - it has been very much appreciated - and to wish everyone a funfilled summer! THE GOING GETS TOUGH FOR MISTERTON BOWLS CLUB July ended with a difficult week for Misterton bowlers. They played three games and lost them all. But the ladies’ team of Hazel Duffner, Freda Allsopp, and Pat Harriman continue to show excellent form in their matches, winning one and narrowly losing by only one point in the other. Pictured is member, Peter Kent, in action. New members Denise Jones and Keith Morgan became Mr and Mrs Morgan after their marriage last month. Congratulations to them both. We wish them every happiness and success, especially on the green. Pete Collins, in his first season with the Club, played well and showed huge potential. Displaying ability and maturity beyond his years, he has already taken on the role of ‘Skip’ in the odd match, a position normally reserved for those of more advanced years! Misterton Bowls Club is looking for new members – beginners welcome! For further information, contact Tom on 07855 169 005 (e-mail boroughparker@gmail.com).
A governor at Misterton Primary & Nursery School has received a longservice award. Hazel Brand was nominated for the award after serving as a governor for 21 years under three head teachers. Hazel was re-elected for another term of office at the last meeting of the Board of Governors. The certificate from the County Council is for governors who have served for over 15 years.

Does Haxey need a Heritage/Information Centre? This was the question posed by Cllr Alan Holgate at the last meeting of Haxey Parish Council. He explained, that recently the Council had been offered the chance to purchase an antique long case clock built in Haxey, but, he asked, if the purchase had been made where would the clock have been displayed? There is no building, or space to display any accumulated Parish heritage. The most obvious place would probably be Haxey Memorial Hall, maybe in the Hood room. Asking if the Council would write to the hall committee, it was also suggested that enquiries could also be made regarding the disused telephone exchange in Low Street, previously used by the Methodist Chapel as a meeting hall. Cllr Holgate said any display area or building would tie in very well, with the We Live Here Haxey community group’s project to digitize & display, the Haxey Hood archive of national folk lore expert Doc Rowe. It was agreed that tentative enquiries would be made with both the Hall committee & the owners of the building in Low Street, with a view to maybe progressing the idea if any space or building could be utilised in the future. Please let the Parish Council have any further suggestions! Haxey Library Haxey Library is now open as follows: Tuesday – 9am to 12 noon Friday – 9am – 12 noon

A LEVEL AND BTEC RESULTS – AUGUST 2021 GREAT FUTURES AND CAREERS FOR JOHN LEGGOTT STUDENTS Excellent, high earning career pathways now await John Leggott students further to their outstanding A level and BTEC results. Students will now be progressing into a range of subject areas, including Psychology, Law and Criminology. Around 70 students are looking forward to lucrative careers in Accounts, Business and Economics. New Durham University Accountancy and Finance undergraduate Lily Featherstone, ex SJN said “this was my biggest stepping stone, but hard work pays dividends”. Four students will go to the prestigious universities of Oxford and Cambridge to embark upon their next academic adventures. Vignesh Kamath, former Caistor Grammar School, has achieved a place at Emmanuel College Cambridge studying Economics and stated “the pandemic made me more independent and three A*s places me in great stead for my next chapter”. A record number of 15 aspiring medics, dentists and vets will be starting their higher education courses this September. Jefin James, ex-St. Bede’s Catholic Academy, has achieved a place on the Gateway to Medicine programme at the Hull York Medical School. “The teachers and Principal were really supportive and motivational. They’ve helped me immensely to fulfil my dreams of becoming a doctor.” Former Frederick Gough student, Charlie Tanner has secured a Music place at the Leeds Conservatoire. “I am grateful to all my teachers, but in particular my Music teacher who ensured my drumming skills were perfected.” Principal Leon Riley said “once again, I am proud of our students’ success and achievement in what has been two years of pandemic upheaval. I am equally proud of the teaching and support staff who worked tirelessly to ensure all students were cared for in meeting their goals, particularly during many difficult days. As a college, we are excited that our students will become the next successful professionals of the future.” The JLC family has a long history of alumni progressing on to successful destinations. We congratulate all our students on their phenomenal achievement and wish them continued success in the future.
