Welcome to the October issue of the Arrow!

Congratulations to everyone who collected their exam results in August! Some great results across the Isle! In this months issue some of the schools celebrate their success. I was celebrating my own daughters success with 3 A’s and 5 B’s. Struggling through academic subjects throughout her school life I was amazed at how well she did. I think the £ signs made a difference and I should have never under estimated her!

Don’t forget if your child didn't get the results they wanted in GCSE or A levels and couldn't get on that course of first choice, there are plenty of options throughout the Isle and Doncaster. We regularly advertise schools and colleges. Give them a call or visit them on their open days. The choices are wide and varied!

An award-winning duo from Canada will be heading for Epworth’s Thurlow Pavilion next (November) month. They will be appearing at the town's Thurlow Pavilion - a registered charity - on Friday, November 10, and start their act at 8.00pm. However, doors at the venue will be open from7.15pm.

Tickets for the event cost £8.00 and are now available from either Epworth's top ladies' fashion shop - Serendipity on the High Street - or by telephoning (01427) 872491.

Tomato Tomato is being brought to Epworth by Live Lincs- a rural touring programme of theatre, dance and music funded by Arts Council England and North Lincolnshire Council.

Community News Men's Society notches up 60th anniversary An Isle organisation will be notching up the diamond jubilee of its foundation later in the year. It is the Epworth Men’s Society, which attracts members from all over the Isle of Axholme as well as some from the Doncaster area.

“The Society was formed by the then vicar at the town’s parish church of St Andrew’s, the Rev Bill Harvey” explained Society President, Ken Bickerstaff.

“The area had a lot more agricultural workers that it has today and the organisation was there to give them an interest during the winter and spring months,” he added.

To make the occasion members will be holding their 60th annual dinner on Monday, October 2, with a three-course meal at Hatfield's near Doncaster. A free bus will be provided for members to get to the venue.

The Men's Society holds monthly meetings with speakers, as well as trips to places of interest, from October through to its AGM in May. Anyone interested in finding out more about the organisation is invited to call Ken Bickerstaff on 01427 872288

Community News Epworth Old Rectory Getting Towards The End of a Busy Summer My how time does fly. Here we are in September and it feels like it was only a few weeks ago since we began our new season in March. We've had some fantastic events - the Country Fayre at which we had the largest attendance in many years with so many of the local community bringing the family along to meet the animals and enjoy all the other entertainment. And how can anyone forget Shakespeare in the Garden with The Handlebards - a troupe of four young men who brought Midsummer Night's Dream to vibrant life on the main lawn and had everyone in stitches.

Final visitor figures aren't available as we haven't finished the season yet, but it feels as if we have had more groups booked in than we've had for quite a few years, which has been fantastic, but exhausting for all who have had to keep taking care of things for them and making sure their visits ran as smoothly as we could possibly manage. The variety of nationalities of visitors continues with all corners of the globe being represented.

Although the season is coming to a close - we haven't finished yet, by any means. There is an apple pressing day coming up in October when you can bring along your own apples and have them pressed. Bring plastic containers for the juice and you can freeze it for later use (see website and notices for details) More groups to take care of, as well as the visitors who just drop in; the Christmas Craft Fair in November, and the Candlelit tours in December, and somewhere in among all this we have to continue with the day to day running of the rectory, and getting it ready for next year.

Also in December we say farewell to the current chairman of the Trustees of the Old Rectory, Rev. Graham Walker who has served well for a number of years, and get to welcome his replacement Sarah Friswell, whom I am sure will be equally committed to carrying out all the tasks still on the agenda.

One final brief plea - We still need volunteers to help keep the rectory open for our community as well as all our visitors from home and abroad.

Please, if you have one morning or afternoon per week to spare and want something to do, come and join our family of volunteers. You don't need any special skills - you just need to enjoy meeting and talking to new people and we'll teach you any new skills you may need. Epworth and District Flower Club Update.

As this is being written members are anticipating a demonstration entitled “Go Foam Free” given

by Maggie Wootten of the Scunthorpe Flower Club. Maggie usually provides an entertaining evening so it will be a good start to the Autumn meetings.

October will see the Club return to its usual home, the Stephen Jones Community Hall in Haxey, and the usual meeting time of 7.30pm on the second Monday of the month. This year 9th October. It will be a Members Evening, with Autumn themed demonstrations by members.

These meetings are always very enjoyable as we appreciate what hidden talents many members have. There is never any pressure for anyone to demonstrate, in fact many just come along for a relaxing, flower filled evening.

Excitement is growing as the Club plans for its “Piece de Resistance” in November. On Monday 13th November Jonathan Moseley of national and television fame will demonstrate “Fabulously Festive” at the Club’s annual Open Meeting. This year it is to be held in the South Axholme Academy, and entry will be by ticket only.

The tickets will be available from members and further details will be on the posters and adverts being displayed around the town. Proceeds from that event will go to the Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance. Keep your eyes open for the posters and ticket details.

We hope you feel you might like to join us. We consider we are a friendly “bunch”, so why not give us a try?

BELOW AN ACCOUNT OF THE CONVOY CLIFFORD SAILED WITH ON HIS VOYAGE TO SUEZ WS 10X This small convoy sailed from Avonmouth. 14.8.41, Liverpool 15.8 and the Clyde 16.8, making its juncture late on 16.8:

BRISBANE STAR lost the convoy 19.8 and did not rejoin until 22.8.

Local escorts were the Dutch AA cruiser HEEMSKERK and destroyers WHITEHALL and WITCH from Liverpool 15 to 17.8, destroyers GURKHA, ISAAC SWEERS, LANCE and PIORUN from the Clyde 17 to 19.8; DORSETSHIRE as ocean escort to Freetown from the Clyde.

Local Freetown escort of the destroyers BRILLIANT, VELOX (for one day only) and WRESTLER and corvettes CLEMATIS and CROCUS joined 27.8 and the convoy arrived at Freetown 28.8.41.

From Freetown the convoy sailed on 1.9 in the same cruising order with the battleship REVENGE as ocean escort. Corvettes AMARANTHUS (to 2.9) and ARMERIA, MIGNONETTE and WOODRUFF escorted to 3.9.

During the passage, REVENGE's Officer of the Watch chose to exercise a steering breakdown while in close company with the convoy; the resultant violent sheer towards ORION was potentially disastrous but, fortunately, the liner struck the battleship on the starboard bulge with only minor damage to both. Ships.

Had the reverse been the case, the loss of ORION would have been almost inevitable with the possibility of heavy loss of life. The OOW (Officer of the Watch) was subsequently court martial led, and disciplined for having endangered both. his ship and the transport.

Convoy arrived at Cape Town on 11.9, and sailed once more on 14.9, still escorted by REVENGE, and in the same formation. The battleship was relieved by the cruiser CERES on 22.9 who took the convoy on to dispersal off Aden on 27.9, thereafter ships proceeded independently to Suez, arriving at varying dates between 1 and 4.10.41.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Thursday October 5th Hedgehogs

Our indoor meetings begin again on October 5th with a talk on hedgehogs by Frank and Veronica Tett who run a hedgehog rescue centre. They may well bring along a hedgehog depending on what they are looking after at the time.

Hedgehogs can be suffering from injury and many young ones don't get sufficient food to take them through hibernation during the winter. Do come along to find out more. All our indoor meetings are held in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel, Low Street, Haxey on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome, you don’t have to be a member. There is a small admission charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments.

The folk dances run by local folk dance band Lys St Georges continue this autumn as follows: Westwoodside Village Hall: Thursday 5 October Thursday 12 October Epworth, St Andrews Church: Thursday 26 October Thursday 2 November Thursday 30 November Thursday 7 December Each dance starts at 2.30pm and lasts for 2 hours.’

This gorgeous girl is Rosie, an 8 month old Doberman X Great Dane puppy.

Rosie is an adorable bundle of energy!!

She has not had a lot of training or socialisation with other dogs, so will need some work.

She has been fine with children, but cats find her a bit too bouncy!! She is a lovely girl with a lot of love to give, so we would really like to find the right home for her.

GCSE Records Tumble as Grade 9s pose no problem at Hill House!

Isle Pupils at Hill House School are celebrating this year after a record breaking set of GCSE exam results.

Despite concerns over how hard the new Grade 9 would be to achieve, the Hill House group won 22 of them, with pride of place going to Belton’s Matthew West, who gained a full set of 9s in English Language, English Literature, and Mathematics, alongside 7A*s, and Epworth’s Arnav Chadha, who secured 9s in Mathematics and English Literature to go with one 8, and 7A*s.

A massive 318 of the examinations taken resulted in A*/A or equivalent grades, leading to a record braking 59% of GCSEs earning A*/A, and 98% of pupils achieved at least 5 good GCSEs including English and Mathematics.

Other outstanding Isle performers at the Auckley school included Eastoft’s Morgan Everatt, who gained one 9, 5A* and 2As, Belton’s Hannah Young, who managed one 9, 7A*s and 2As, while Beatrice Holland earned 6A*s and 3As and Belton’s Charlie Gaffney secured 4A*s and 5As. Staff at the Auckley school were especially pleased to see that their busy international sports’ stars were able to reconcile their budding careers with very good grades; Doncaster and England Hockey player, Annabel Bennett gained 9 GCSEs including an A* and 2As, Great Britain Skier Jodie Grant secured 7 GCSEs including 3As and 4Bs, while GB sailor Tom Parkhurst earned 7 good passes.

Headmaster David Holland was delighted with the results, saying ‘we are so proud of this group of pupils; we were thrilled to see last year’s group getting past the 50% mark for A*/As, but this takes results to a new level. Community News A CHARITY COFFEE MORNING will be held in the Stephen Jones Community Hall, Haxey, on Saturday 14th October, 10.00 to 12.00 noon.

Entrance including coffee/tea and scone is £3.00.

There will be a cake stall, bring & buy and raffle.

All proceeds will go to Five Talents (www.fivetalents.org.uk). Rachel Lindley (Carol & Peter's daughter) works for Five Talents & is organising a fund-raising marathon in Kenya, to take place on 26 October. Five Talents provides business training & loans for start-up & small businesses in Kenya, Uganda & Tanzania, offering poor people a hand-up but not a hand-out.

18 LOCAL CHILDREN COMPLETE SUMMER READING CHALLENGE AT NEW COMMUNITY LIBRARY Eighteen local children were presented with certificates and ‘goodies’ at Misterton Library on Saturday 9 September to mark their success completing the Summer Reading Challenge 2017.

Just six months after Misterton Parish Council took over running Misterton Library, the Council hosted a party for the children and their parents/guardians to mark their achievements.

Opening the prize-giving event, Parish Cllr David Seymour, who is also the Parish Council’s lead on the Library project, congratulated the children on their achievements: they had to read at least six books during the summer, collect stickers, and solve a challenge on the theme of animal agents.

He also thanked the volunteers, who are keeping Misterton Library open and had helped organise the party.

Guest, District Cllr Hazel Brand, emphasised the importance of reading: a life skill that gives children and adults access to so much information and worlds of imagination: “Awards like this, she said, “are an important milestone in achieving fluency in reading and understanding of the written word.

Those of us who are a little older can testify to these young readers what pleasure reading can bring throughout your life.”

The awards were presented by Lesley Parker of Inspire, the ‘arms-length’ organisation that manages the County Council’s libraries, and Manager of Retford Library, with Peter Marsden, Chairman of Misterton Parish Council.
