Welcome to the October issue of Haxey&Westwoodside Arrow

September as come and gone so quickly and we are now in to October, and YES my favorite time of year! A month of pumpkins and all things spice which means it can only be Halloween! There are 2 events in the Arrow this month advertising their Halloween events, so stay local and please give them some support!

I would like to congratulate a very special person on his new business venture, SMW Fitness and Training. I am sure most of you on the Isle know Mr Watson, I for one know him from the primary school days of my son who is now 16! We wish him all the best in his new venture, and I am 100 percent sure Mr Watson will do very well. As one profession loses a much admired school teacher, another profession is just waiting round the corner. Check his website out and lets get training: www.smwfitnessandhealth.co.uk

1st Isle of Axholme BP Scouts

Summer in scouts looks much more outdoors than the rest of the year. As we prepare for our big, combined section camp (beavers, cubs, scouts and senior scouts) and Duke of Edinburgh assessed Expeditions, we spend much more time outside. Camp preparation involves making sure everyone has the skills needed to enjoy the camp. The older scouts get ready to run games and fun sessions for the younger ones, the younger ones get ready for first camps learning tent and packing skills. More to follow after camp (July 14-16th).

June also saw our annual Cublympics – we took to the field to compete in a range of sports day type activities but with a twist. Competition and sportsmanship at its best. Lots of fun! Due to a number of cubs moving up to scouts, there will be spaces opening up in cubs from September if your 8-11 year old would like to join. Contact Matthieu for more information.

The scouts have been revelling in the warmer weather, completing their kayak badge. We have joined Green Star Canoe club for training on a Monday evening in glorious sunshine (so warm, we have not needed wetsuits), to work towards our BCU 1* qualification equivalent. It involves safely getting into/ out of kayaks, paddle skills including a longer journey, and capsize drill.

Our Duke of Edinburgh group continue to train for their Bronze Award, preparations are well underway for their 2 day expedition in July. Menus have been chosen and stoves prepared, tents and rucksacks packed (everything they need for 2 days in the wilderness) and weighed to make sure it evenly distributed across the group. Campsites booked and maps annotated and routecards written.

We have recently been trying to raise our profile in the community as there are many young people who do not know what scouts is like and would be interested in joining. We have done an assembly in a local primary school, and community litter picking. On the weekend of July 1st our scout troop also had a presence at both Haxey Summer Feast and Misterton Gala.

Sections all meet at the Westwoodside Village Hall: (Cubs, Scouts and Senior Scouts) all meet on Monday evenings 6pm (Cubs), and 7pm (Scouts), and Beavers (tbc) probably on a Tuesday evening at 6pm (from September).

this summer. The aim of the events, linked to the national Summer Reading Challenge, was to encourage children, young people, and families to enjoy visiting the Library and reading books. There was a selection of games and activities for children (pictured) and families.

event at Wesley Memorial Church Epworth in August. It was wonderful to share it with so many people of all ages from our community. We explored the theme of God’s wonderful creation and what we can do to protect it, through eco themed crafts, art activities, gardening, Bible stories performed by the ‘Open the Book’ team and parachute games. A lovely buffet lunch was provided for everyone. We were blessed with perfect weather, allowing us to have activities in the church gardens as well as in the church building. It was a very practical day with lots to see and do. Hopefully the people who attended will keep the importance of the key message which was to change actions to greener, cleaner and more sustainable lifestyles for the sake of our planet and its future. The team who planned and organised this successful day are already looking at the feedback forms and reflecting with the intention of doing a future event that we will endeavour to inform The Arrow of so… watch this space!
