Community News Haxey & Westwoodside Heritage Society's next meeting is on Thursday, 16th November at 7.30pm in Westwoodside Village Hall. A welcome visit by Richard Pullen with an echo of Christmases past. Richard's presentation "The Christmas Truce and the Angel of Mons" will include some unusual, festive and supernatural stories of WWI. Not to be missed! All welcome, £3 including refreshments. Epworth & District Flower Club Members of Epworth and District Flower Club continue to enjoy their monthly meetings held in St Andrew’s Church on the second Monday of each month. The September meeting welcomed Toni Gravel of Fountain Court Florist. Tony gave an interesting and enjoyable demonstration using much available autumn foliage and fruits and of course used beautiful autumn coloured flowers. In house talents were utilised at the October meeting and another enjoyable evening ensued. If you don’t join us during the year you must buy tickets at £15 and come to our Open Evening in November. It is an annual event and we host a very able person each year. This year we are looking forward to being entertained by Nick Grounds. He is described as a horticultural auctioneer by day and a NAFAS demonstrator by night. The title of his demonstration this year is “Jingle a Partridge with Tinsel”. So what fun arrangements does that conjour up? Do come and enjoy the evening at South Axholme Academy on Monday, 13th November. Tickets are available from any club member or by contacting Carolyn Drury 07730 487207 or Celia Jones on 07784 421273. It is always a very enjoyable event and you may win a beautiful, imaginative arrangement.

Skills For Life Haxey scout group has been meeting in Haxey for many years, firstly behind the church Then moving to the youth hub on the high street, the group is made up currently of over 70 young people aged between 6 to 18 years. In the last two years the scout association has opened scouting up to younger members, This group are called squirrels and meet weekly in a Drey, they are aged 4 and 5 years of age. Through squirrels the programme is carefully designed to support growth and learning. It’s a positive safe environment for children to gain skills for life. Starting them on a journey to citizens and leaders of the future. To be able to move forward with our plans to open up a Drey and welcome new members to our scout group we are looking for volunteers 18 plus, who would like to join the group working with the squirrels on an evening. Meetings are usually for 1 hour plus a little time for setting up and cleaning away, There may well be extra trips and activities for the squirrels in the district and county for them to Join in with, but any support you’re willing to give to this section would be appreciated. Squirrel Leaders. All of our leaders are trained volunteers, working to make sure is safe and open to all. Some lead the Drey week in and week out. Others visit occasional to help run a session or drop in to Share their skills. No matter how much time you have to spare, please find out about volunteering. Feel free to contact myself on 07766806530. or go to www.scouts.org volunteer with scouts. or squirrels 4 to 6 years.

High Levels WI 32 members of High Levels WI thoroughly enjoyed an Austrian themed evening for their September meeting. At the usual venue, the Reindeer Inn, Sandtoft, the tables were decorated with red and white flowers and red napkins, an Austrian flag was mounted at the front of the room and a delicious meal which included goulash and finally individual apple strudels was served. Several members dressed in “traditional” costumes and everyone wore something red and white, contributing to a very happy atmosphere. One member produced an enjoyable quiz, with multiple choice answers. This ensured there was not too much competition and prizes were awarded to the winners. The October meeting is always an enjoyable produce auction and the November meeting on Wednesday, 15th at 6.45pm will host Laura Platt telling the story of Lister’s Crisps. You will see we have some fun and friendship. a lookmention at our website: www.highlevelswi.co.uk then come and to joinadvertisements us. 8 Have Please “The Arrow” when responding

Haxey Library - Volunteer or lose it The Library is ‘manned’ by volunteers and we have a problem. We are concerned that, without more volunteers, we will be unable to maintain the opening hours which we now operate. We are stretched, especially when holiday and illness absences occur. If you have time to spare why not consider becoming a ‘volunteer.’ Training is provided and you would be working with a volunteer who is familiar with the system. By volunteering you would help us to keep the library open as it is now and continue to provide a valuable service for the local community. Normally, we would only ask you to ‘man’ one of the weekly spots, but even if you could only manage to help once a fortnight this would still be very welcome. If you are interested please contact one of us during opening hours and we will give you further details, or just come in and see how we work. More information can also be obtained from North Lincolnshire libraries on 01724 297251 or library.enquiries@ northlincs.gov.uk Our opening hours are listed below. You will find us tucked in at the end of the Memorial Hall, almost opposite the Coop Supermarket.

Opening Hours Monday, 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. Tuesday, 9 a.m. until 12 noon Friday, 9 a.m. until 12 noon Saturday, 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Did you know that Humber & Wolds Rural Action delivers a Voluntary Car Service across North Lincolnshire, which helps people with genuine transport difficulties get to important appointments such as doctors, hospitals, dentists, clinics, support groups, local shops etc. All our drivers are volunteers, including Alan from Haxey. This is what Alan has to say: “Having retired (for the third time) in June 2021 I had decided that I still wanted to keep active but not be tied to anything such as another paid job, so a voluntary role seemed the ideal solution. Having seen the car service requesting volunteers on Facebook, the role seemed an ideal fit for exactly what I was looking for. I signed up at the end of August 2021 just as we were coming out of lockdown. The main thing about the role is that the people we transport are often going to hospital with serious health conditions and are stressed about their appointment. The one thing we do as a service is help eliminate the stress of these people which comes with being uncertain of how they are going to get to their appointment on time and how they are going to get home. Many have said to me that the stress of getting there, and back is higher than the stress of the appointment itself. The relief they feel when they know they can get there, and back is immense”. Humber & Wolds Rural Action need more volunteer drivers on The Isle. If you enjoy driving and have some time to spare, please contact Carole Foster on 01652 637700. Drivers must hold a valid driving licence and own their own car. All expenses are reimbursed. You can also ring this number to find more about this service and to register. Please note that mileage rates apply.

Entrance fee is £1. There will be refreshments and a raffle. Details about the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust can be found on their web site.

URGENT APPEAL Recently, the number of parcels leaving Haxey Youth Hub for families across the Isle of Axholme has topped 80 each week. Around 250 individuals are now being supported with food top-ups. This has put tremendous pressure on us as we struggle to meet the rising demand. We urgently need donations of food. Fresh, chilled and frozen food is welcome in addition to the usual long-life foodstuffs. Home-grown produce is always very well received too. Donations may be made at points across the Isle - please contact us to find your closest point. Monetary donations which are used solely to top-up the shelves are welcome too.

1st Isle of Axholme BP Scouts October 2023

Our autumn term has begun with welcoming newcomers, sorting patrols and updating badges recently earned. We also spent a session re-learning how to sew on the badges in the right places so that we look smart ahead of the Remembrance parade on Sunday 12th November. Cubs enjoyed a sponsored free session at Green Star Canoeing where we paddled at their open day. Lots of fun and games, much splashing and capsizing, followed by food. Thank you! Cubs have also been working on their navigation skills, going out and about with map and compass. Our scouts Bronze Duke of Edinburgh group who successfully complete their 2 day expedition in July have started achieving their full award. This shows commitment to learn something new, a skill, for 3 months, serving the community for 3 months and also taking part in a physical activity every week for 3 months. Well done! Next stop, silver award! September also saw the visit to scouts of a Police Constable who helped us complete our Crime Prevention badge. We learned lots of tips for keeping safe like what to do with our car keys while in the house, storing belongings in cars, and CEOP online safety. We also went outside to a staged Crime Scene, complete with ketchup for realism! We followed it up with a session thinking how we could teach stranger danger to younger cubs or beavers. October sees our annual cub and scout visit to the Boston Park Maize maze, and scouts completing our “back to basics” bushcraft training – photos to follow next month! Finally, we have a plan for restarting the Beavers section - please get in touch if your child (aged 5-8 years) would like to join us after Half Term. Sections all meet at the Westwoodside Village Hall: (Cubs, Scouts and Senior Scouts) all meet on Monday evenings 6pm (Cubs), and 7pm (Scouts & Senior Scouts), and Beavers (tbc) probably on a Tuesday evening at 6pm (from September).

Remember, we are still looking to recruit more Beavers leaders/ helpers for this section. Please get in touch if this is something you would like to do.

All enquiries about Scouts or Beavers should go to Gregor on: gagibb79@aol.com, 22 Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements and Cub enquiries should go to Ma hieu at: ma hieu_maloigne@mentor.com.

We have had a super start back to school here at Haxey! Our new starters in F2 have had a fabulous time exploring the mud and sand and water and are loving school dinners and playing out on the field at lunchtime! They have all settled in fantastically and it feels as if they have been part of our Haxey family for ever.

Applications for school places into Reception shut on January 15th 2024, so please phone school on 01427 752294 if you would like to visit our Early Years setting.

At the other end of the school, our Year 6 class have also made a fantastic start to their final year at Haxey, representing the school at the dedication service for the Haxey Halifax Memorial. This was a great opportunity for them to discover more about a piece of local history and got them asking lots of great questions!
