Charity Christmas Fete at The Waterfront Inn, West Stockwith, on 8th December from 3pm. The money raised will be shared towards: Resarch into Guillain–Barré syndrome as a member of our family was diagnosed with this life threatening virus that only 1 in 20,000 people are diagnosed with. We would like to raise money so people will be made more aware of it to help diagnose as early as possible.

Also a local 11 year old recently suffered from a brain tumour and we would like to give the money to the rehab team to say thank you.

Calls for service rose and centred around the B1396 including Pelfintax, Wroot Road, Idle Bank and Tindlebank and including private land owned by local farmers and others.

Times of offences varied and included reports of theft including theft of cable, burglary, suspicious persons with dog(s), criminal damage and off road bikes. A considerable amount of work and liaison has been built between Neighbourhood staff and the owners and staff working on land to engage with them and to identify where offences and offenders are committing these acts and routes they use. UPDATE; - Reports have been significantly reduced at this moment in time, which is not say that this issue has been eradicated, there are many possible reasons. I would ask that everyone remain vigilant especially with darker night soon upon us. Information is being received that the young people who gather at this location are involving themselves in drinking alcohol and substance misuse. I would encourage anyone with any information regarding this to contact Humberside Police on 101 or the below named community policing staff. With the summer holidays from educational establishments and hopefully some fine summer weather youths congregating at this location should be reminded that any illegal activity will be dealt with but if they are behaving themselves then we would also like to engage with them in order to clarify with residents in Westwoodside that all is well. UPDATE; - We have been visiting the park on a regular basis and liaising with the local community. There has been a quantity of drug paraphernalia seized by police, with no-one being identified as owners surprisingly! Partnership work continues with Safer Neighbourhoods. I would advise anyone who has either knowledge or information regarding the activities chosen by a few to contact ourselves in order that the park can be used for what it is intended and not a meeting place for those wishing to indulge in drugs.

Ferry Park and surrounding area.

Reports are being received regarding a few people who are choosing to use the park for other activities that what it is intended. Anti-social behaviour is a nuisance to the residents who wish to use the park and will not be tolerated. There is also person(s) who think it is acceptable to ride around on a motorbike not only causing a nuisance but with no helmet. Enquiries are progressing with the identification of this person who will face the consequences. Anyone with information please contact the police. Log 317 28/10/12 refers.

On September 12th, Haxey Parish Jubilee Committee held their closing meeting to discuss the events over the jubilee weekend and view all the photographs and settle the accounts.

Some years ago the following obituary appeared in a newspaper: “DIED: Salvador Sanchez, 23, World Boxing Council Featherweight Champion and one of the sport’s best fighters; of injuries after his Porsche sports car collided with two trucks just north of Queretaro in Mexico.”

Many of Sanchez’s contemporaries - as well as boxing writers – were of the opinion that, had it not been for his premature death, Sanchez could have gone on to become the greatest Featherweight boxer of all time. A school drop-out, Sanchez once explained, ‘I found out that I liked hitting people, and I didn’t like school, so I started boxing.’

A few weeks before his fatal accident, Sanchez had said to a reporter: ‘I’d like to step down undefeated. I’m only 23 and I have all the time in the world.’

His confident comment reminds me of a story Jesus once told about a farmer who decided to build bigger and bigger barns so as to make as much money as possible. He intended to be able to retire early and take life easy, while he ate, drank and was merry. As that story of the Rich Fool in Luke 12 makes clear [and it’s often read in churches around this time of Harvest Festivals], this life is not all that there is, and material things don’t last. Even life itself is uncertain.

What really matters in life, Jesus reminds us, is to love God and please him, and to care for other people around us, so that we make the world a better place than it would otherwise be.

Amateur Dramatics The Epworth Mowbray Players No. 5 by Anthony Catherall

Using the R.P.I (retail price index) three shillings (3/-) would in 2009 have been worth £3.21, today a little more. If you wanted to reserve the best seats in the house it would have cost you 3/- and further back 2/“The Admirable Crichton” was first produced at the Duke of York’s Theatre, London on the 4 th November 1902. For the Epworth Mowbray Players this was the second comedy for them, being by arrangement with Messrs. Samuel French Ltd., London. The play examines examples of how leadership qualities depend on the context. The cast list was to be the biggest yet with twenty one characters. Most of the ‘regulars’ appeared again along with some new faces playing the smaller parts, D. Ffrangcon Davies (The Rev. John Trehearne), W. Leroy Haines (Mr Rolleston a Valet), Derek Camp (The Stable boy), Julie Spencer (a Kitchen Wench) and Ronald Till (a Page Boy).

The acknowledgements list now contained eight items, as well as previously mentioned included this time were; Messrs. D.C. Fields and D.C. Harrison for painting the scenery for Act 111. Mrs Hill for the loan of her Radiogram and Mr M.H. Boardman, for arranging the sale of Wall’s Ice Cream.

Epworth and District Flower Club’s News Letter Chairman Carolyn Drury opened the October meeting by welcoming all who attended and congratulating two new “grandmas”. Then followed some routine business before the introduction of the evening’s demonstrator, Sasha Gallagher from Rotherham.

Sasha had demonstrated to the Club approximately 5 years ago and members remembered her vivacious and entertaining manner. Her first arrangement was created using a large log basket and the flowers illustrated the evening’s title of “Autumn Haze”. She used some dyed foliage, pale apricot carnations, yellow gerbera, cream ornamental brassicas and sprigs of inedible apples. The symmetrical arrangement was greeted with general approval.

Sacha’s subsequent arrangements were made using a garden trough, an urn, a silver vase and a glass bowl. She developed her theme using colours, foliage and flowers to depict further thoughts of autumn, into frosty winter mornings, warm Christmas colours and on into early spring.

Her use of only large blooms of chrysanthemums in three autumn colours; cream, green and a bronze transformed the trough and hipericum, sunflowers and folded aspidistra leaves were expertly transformed into a hand tied bouquet. Warm winter thoughts were stirred with Sacha’s use of wine coloured Kangaroo’s paw (anigozanthos], red gerbera, deep red roses, claret chrysanthemums and roses. This arrangement incorporated a variety of textures and leaf shapes.

Frosty mornings were imagined with the help of the silver vase, chincherinchee for which Sacha expertly used the Latin name to everyone’s amusement, a sprig of a cotton plant with cotton balls growing, white flocks and gerbera, Eryngium completed that scene.

Finally, palm leaves, beautiful oriental pink lilies, large pink chrysanthemum blooms, pink roses, gerbera and deep lilac carnations transformed a glass bowl container.

As usual six lucky raffle winners were able to take home the demonstrator’s work and everyone agreed that Sacha’s visit had been informative, entertaining and very enjoyable.

Members were reminded that the next meeting will be the Open Meeting at the Memorial Hall in Haxey on Monday, 12th November. It will be the Christmas Demonstration by June Borrowdale.

Although the original intention of the committee was to provide a programme of non-profit making activities to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, as a result of two very successful tea and concert parties, the fund showed a surplus of £900 which it was agreed to share between Haxey and Westwoodside village halls. A slide show of photographs taken during the festivities was also on display and it was unanimously agreed by the committee to select the best of these and to produce a commemorative Jubilee calendar which will be available soon. Thanks go to all the many people who worked tirelessly to make the Jubilee weekend such a tremendous success.

Remembrance Day, 2012 As previously stated Remembrance Day this year falls on a Sunday, the laying of remembrance wreaths will take place at the War Memorial, Burrell’s Corner, on Sunday 11th November, commencing at 10am.

The Parish Council have applied to North Lincolnshire Council for a temporary road closure which will include East Lound Road & Graizelound Fields Road from 9.30am to 10.30am which will allow the British Legion, veterans, uniform groups and members of the public to remember in silence and commence the parade to St Nicholas Church for the main Remembrance Service starting at 10.45am.

Parish Handyman It is with great regret to the Parish Council that the current Handyman has had to retire; therefore the Parish Council is looking for a replacement. The work carried out by the Handyman over this past 24months has seen new flower beds being installed throughout the parish, notice boards and information boards repaired including a refurb on the St Nicholas Lych gate as well as the removal of trees and shrubs on parish owned or maintained land.

The ideal replacement candidate will hold Public Liability cover and be able to carry out basic maintenance, as required, to Parish Council (PC) owned property / land. This will include:Maintenance of notice boards, grass cutting and strimming of vegetation on Parish Council land. Planting, weeding, and maintenance of any area as required. Litter control, leaf clearance and cleaning out of blocked gullies etc. Installation of planters, watering and maintenance of established flower beds as and when required.

Any other similar duties that could be reasonably expected.

Budding Isle Athletes Ellie and Harry Watts competed in their first cross country event Sunday 6th October. It was held at Graves Park Sheffield under clear blue Sky's though the grass course was very boggy in places. It was a relay event with Ellie Watts, Summer Ward and Rachael Thacker competing in the girls under 13 team. The field contained 25 teams from as far a field as Liverpool and they came a respectable 16th.

Harry Watts , Sam Godfrey and Adam Allan competed in the boys under 11 relay and gave everything they had over the 3 1200m legs. This was their first race of the season, be taking away everything they have learnt and coming back even stronger in forth coming events. On Sunday the 14th October the boys are looking forward to travelling to Cleethorpes competing in the fun run held on the beach where healthy fish and chips will be consumed AFTER the race .

All six Athletes are trained by Adrian Ward, and its a real pleasure to watch them training together as a close knit team.

HAXEY & WESTWOODSIDE HERITAGE SOCIETY A.G.M. 11TH. OCTOBER 2012 Thursday 11th. October saw the Annual General Meeting of the Haxey and Westwoodside Heritage Society Chairman Jackie Starr opened the meeting with the secretary’s reading of the minutes of the 2011 AGM following with her own report for 2012 which had been rather like the Curate’s egg ‘good in parts’ with the Jubilee and Olympics creating an atmosphere in which the society’s Jubilee Tea Party had raised over £200 towards the Parish celebrations and our ‘Street Party’ on July 14 th. that had been a great success due in no small part to the committee’s efforts and the generous, anonymous, donation of a china Jubilee mug to every member.

Sadly this was followed by two society members early death and members illnesses which had resulted in lower attendances at our meetings, however Jackie looked forward to an active 2013 with the completion of the schools ‘Literary Award’ book project and with other exciting events planned.

The meeting continued with the Secretary’s report of the past years presentations and the Treasurers report of a healthy bank balance and the need to maintain income due to our increasing costs.

Ill health caused the retirement of Mrs. Barbara Bullock from the committee.

The remaining committee then retired and with Mr. Malcolm Deneley as independent chairman were formally re-elected Mrs. Jackie Starr-Chairman, Mrs Mary Spalding-Secretary and Mr. David HookTreasurer, Mrs. Linda Marsden was elected to the committee.

As has now become normal for members of the society attending their AGM the routine business was again followed by a surprise item, on arrival instead of the normal meeting room members saw a room with tables set out and laid with wine glasses and following the business of the meeting members were served with a selection of Plum Bread, Cheese, Shortbreads and a selection of Red and White wine or soft drink, this may have been expected from past experience of our AGMs but what was not expected was the appearance of Mr Dean Headland the local celebrity pianist who entertained the audience with a selection of music from the shows, the Beatles and some of his own compositions and arrangements all delivered with amusing asides.

The meeting was then reluctantly closed with Jackie reminding members that the next meeting of the Society will be on November 8th. when Maureen James will present her talk ‘Legends of the Carrs’.

News from Westwoodside C of E Primary School

HARVEST

FESTIVAL

On Monday the 1stOctober 2012 Westwoodside Church of England Primary School had a harvest festival. Pupils brought in bags the week before.

On the day of the harvest children and adults brought in fruit and vegetables. At 10:00am we had a harvest assembly and sang a song related with harvest, Mrs Harris played on the piano. Each class sang a song or read a poem. In the afternoon, some adults put the produce in bags. Then each class came with 50 pence or more to buy some produce. The money raised goes to guide dogs for the blind.

Westwoodside Church of England School News Letter As always the new school year has started busily with a variety of events and activities to enhance the children’s learning.

Thank you to Mrs Judge for organising our third Golf Day for Years 1 to 6. Each class had an opportunity to learn from a golf expert, Ian McFarlane. The children enjoyed their taster sessions and we heard a lot of positive feedback.

Also thank you to the PTA for funding the event.

On 28 September F2 and the older F1 children enjoyed Mrs Tiggy Winkle’s workshop at Normanby Park. They listened to Beatrix Potter stories as they walked around the parkland.

After each story a character was leant to a child to look after. Their favourite was Peter Rabbit – his little blue jacket was even found in the walled garden!

In Year 2, as part of their Harvest and Healthy Eating project, each child made their own fruit salad from a selection of delicious fresh fruit. The most popular part was eating their fruit salad in School!

On 1st October Revered Jeremy Green led our Year 1 to 6 Harvest Festival service in School. A marvellous collection of produce, donated by Parents/ Carers, was displayed.

During the afternoon, volunteers sorted the produce into individual bags which the children enjoyed buying. A total of £96.10 was raised which began our fund raising for this year’s charity. It was decided to choose our School Council’s most popular suggestion which was Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Axholme Camera Club held its first Competition for the 2012-13 season. It was a print competition and the subject was “OPEN” this was selected by the committee to give freedom of choice for the members. The competition was judged by Mr Ray Brightman FRPS, DPAGB, from Sheffield. Prior to judging Ray explained that he had been retired for nineteen (19) years having spent most of his working life has a Professional Photographer working for different companies mainly in Yorkshire. He has been a member of Sheffield Photographic Society for many years. He has also in the past held the position of President of the YPU (Young Photographers United). The judge gave his praises and said that the overall quality of the images on show were very good, and wished he could take some of the home.

Once again it shows that the members get a great deal of enjoyment out of competitions with a very good showing of images, both in numbers and quality. The subjects of the images entered varied tremendously, there was scenic landscapes, bridges, plus portraits of people and animals such as a Gorilla, a giant slug, a Zebra and also exotic bird.

We also had a large section of entries depicting natural history, with cheetahs, Leopard, Squirrels both grey and red.

In all there were 59 entries in total with 44 coloured and 15 monochrome. The high scorers were, in the Coloured Section – George Fiddler 19 and 20. Jean Goodburne 20 and 20. David Hughes 18. Parry Jenkins 18. Mandy Steer 18.

Well done a everyone who took part Towards the end of our last photographic season, Axholme Camera Club committee asked the members for suggestions of items they would like to see on the program for the forth coming season. Hence, before the start of the 2012-13 season the club committee sat down and designed a program which tried to fulfil all the positive suggestions received. One of the outstanding comments was to engage more experienced speakers. On Wednesday 3rd October we had the first Open Evening and there was a fantastic turn out of members and guests. Our speaker was Mr John Gardener from Wakefield. John is a Professional Photographer, his special areas are, Portraits, Weddings, Portfolios and commercial advertising work etc. He became a professional about twelve years ago, in them days specialising in Natural History, however, it didn't take long to discover that he would need to expand his portfolio in order to keep paying his bills. Today John is in great demand and now does about forty Weddings plus his commercial and advertising commitments. He has his own studio but is also feels very comfortable when asked by companies to photograph products on location.

The talk and digital slide show he gave was extremely entertaining, plus the images themselves where very creative and outstanding in quality and it was agreed by the committee that he has a wealth of creative talent and experience.

The talk started with wide range of natural history subjects and followed on with images of weddings and commercial products, including bricks, cars, buses and not forgetting some items of ladies and men's under wear. TRENTSIDE FEDERATION SCHOOL NEWS – ST MARTIN’S AND WEST BUTTERWICK CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOLS Bonjour tout le monde! We are certainly getting in to the spirit of things with the thematic focus of ‘France’ for our Juniors at West Butterwick. Recently the children studied the paintings of Claude Monet, the famous French artist. They were introduced to Impressionism, a 19th-century art movement that originated with a group of Paris-based artists. The name of the style comes from the title of a Claude Monet work, Impression, Soleil Levant (Impression, Sunrise). Impressionist paintings include relatively small, thin, yet visible brush strokes and often look blurry when close up although they come alive when viewed from a distance.

The children have also worked together in two large groups to recreate models of two famous French bridges. The Millau Viaduct is a modern cable-stayed road-bridge built in 2004 that spans the valley of the River Tarn near Millau in southern France. It is also the highest bridge in the world. The other group recreated the Seyssel Old Bridge on the River Rhone: it is an old suspension bridge and dates back to 1838. All of the paper straws used in the building of these models was rolled by hand!!

In amongst all of this, a very challenging homework project was set – ‘to build the Eiffel Tower from scratch using any method of your choosing’. The response to this challenge has been incredibly impressive – we have had matchstick creations, Lego masterpieces and even a version made out of colourful bendy straws – amazing!

Juniors at St Martin’s in Class 3 (Years 3 & 4) have been learning about the Green Cross Code and road safety in conjunction with North Lincolnshire Council. They have all achieved their pedestrian skills certificate. More importantly, Years 3 & 4 have been putting their training into practise out and about in the local community. We continue to study the evolution of the Steam Train at St Martin’s in Key Stage 2 and the children are very much looking forward to their forthcoming trip to the National Rail Museum in York. They have many interesting questions to ask on their visit.

A very successful Educational visit took place recently, to Thornton’s Farm in Owston Ferry (see separate piece in the Arrow reporting on this). Both Infant Classes have collaborated on their ‘Farming’ study theme this term, learning about Mediaeval farming and how the Feudal System worked. One of the children's favourite activities at West Butterwick was making a harrow which was used to plough the fields. They are proudly displayed on the classroom wall now! They have also made a Shaduf, an Ancient Egyptian piece of equipment, discovering that the majority of farming occurred along the River Nile because of the rich soil after it had flooded the land. The one fact they we will all remember is that the Egyptian Farmers trained monkeys to climb the trees and drop the fruit for the farmers to catch!

Many of these thematic studies include opportunities for Mathematical skills to develop as well, in addition to their daily Maths lesson. For example, Key Stage 1 children have explored the different breakfast cereals that are the product of arable farming, creating block graphs to show their preferences.

Across both schools, since last Academic year, we have been working on enhancing the maths provision at both schools from Foundation Stage right through to Year 6. Our pupils are really enjoying Mathletics – an online learning platform. Mathletics offers live games, where children can play other pupils from around the world, participating in ‘real-time games of speed and skill’. We have been very pleased with the results!

'Class Four have been continuing to work on their topic of Trains learning more about the social change that the rail network in Britain bought about.

They have also been producing some excellent pieces of homework creating power points and posters about Victorian engineers and inventors and creating forms of transport (both real and imaginary) using their knowledge of 3D shapes. The children have also been working hard on their class assembly presenting, in different ways, their experiences of the topic and they are really looking forward to their trip to York Railway Museum very soon.'

Doncaster Advanced Motorist Rain and Leaves Block Drains Dear readers, Autumn is a lovely time of year and compared to winter, it’s a lot easier to cope with from the drivers’ perspective.

It will soon be autumn and with it we have two predictable seasonal problems. Fallen leaves may be colourful, but when they are combined with heavier seasonal rainfall, they can catch out an unwary road user.

Slippery leaves are a significant traction problem. As they fall, they tend to accumulate near the gutter.

That in turn means that there is a potential vicious circle: the leaves get soaked and stick together, effectively blocking the drain and preventing water running away. So a combination of mashed up leaves and water accumulating between them quickly build up in autumn to create a possible skid area for motorists, and a difficult area to negotiate for those on two wheels such as motorcyclists.

The classic problem area is a leafy avenue where a motorist is taking a corner and perhaps unaware that one or more wheels are sliding across the mulch at the same time.

The darker mornings and early evenings also means that spotting surface water is not as easy at this time of year. If the road surface is black, you can’t see where pockets of water have accumulated until you hit them, which can mean a sharp, unexpected jolt on the steering wheel. Treat leaves and unseen surface water with a degree of caution and be ready to slow down a little; you need to be certain what it is you are driving on.

Autumn can also take its toll on car batteries as the first frost settles, but some basic maintenance can help to prolong battery life.

The top of a battery must be clean and dry, the terminals must be tight and free from corrosion and the battery itself must be mounted securely in its tray.

Modern batteries need be kept fully charged by the car's alternator. A loud screeching for the first few seconds after the engine starts, is a sure sign that the drive belt needs tightening and if this is left, a flat battery will inevitably follow, probably accompanied by a broken belt later in the year. And, if a battery is more than three years old, it is worth having it checked now to save many a frustrating start to an autumn morning.
