Editors Letter....

It is official on writing this editorial it is only 71 days until Christmas Day! The question is who has started their Christmas Shopping? Before you venture to the High Street in town or start browsing the internet think about shopping local. You have many shops to choose from in Epworth and the Isle there are enough presents for the whole family. From beauty, clothes for everyone, candles, flowers, special gifts, food hampers, Epworth has it all.

Have a walk into the village centre and have a look you wont be disappointed!

November brings Bonfire Night, a very exciting time of year, where we celebrate the discover of the Gunpowder plot against the King and Parliament in the early 17th century. We all enjoy a good bonfire, firework display and sausages on the 5th November each year.

Remember remember the 5th of November Gunpowder treason and plot We see no reason Why gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot!

Stand well back.

Never go near at firework that has been lit, it may explode.

Haxey Playing Fields Association are planning Christmas in the Park again this year and would welcome applications from stall traders to join our event. At their October meeting Haxey W.I. members were inspired by Mrs. Ann Firths passionate talk on the University of the 3rd Age. She explained the wide range of topics that could be studied and the social life involved which reached out to the lonely.

At the November meeting Paul Learoyd, who is the Chief Executive of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, will talk about the work of the Trust and give us an update on the state of Wildlife Conservation in Lincolnshire. The Trust already looks after about 100 nature reserves in Lincolnshire, six of which are here in the Isle of Axholme, which cover many habitats including woodland, meadows, and heath land. He will be showing us some of these places and the animals and plants which are found there and explaining the work the Trust does to look after them. He will tell us about the way in which opportunities may arise in the future to allow the Trust to continue to make a difference for wildlife in the County. This will take place on Thursday November 3rd at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome so do come along and join us, you do not have to be a member.

Allan Rowsell will be entertaining us at our December meeting with photographs taken on his visits to California. Allan is a well known local photographer so, with his many wonderful images accompanied by music and tales of his travels, means we are in for a treat. Epworth Police Report Farmland off the B1396 Westwoodside – Theft, Criminal Damage, Anti-Social Behaviour, Off road bikes.

Calls for service to these areas have seen an increase recently and centres in and around the B1396 including Pelfintax, Wroot Road, Idle Bank and Tindlebank and including private land owned by local farmers and others.

The times of reports vary throughout the 24 PC Constable 1169 PCSO 7574 Sue Fahy hour period. The calls include reports of theft, Sally Jameson burglary, suspicious persons with dog, criminal damage and off road bikes. A considerable amount of work and liaison has been built between Neighbourhood staff and the owners and staff working on land to engage them and to identify where offences and offenders are committing these acts and routes they use.

UPDATE; Calls to the area regarding both off road bikes and trespassers on farmland have decreased considerably with only 2 being received regarding off road bikes, one in the Westwoodside area and the other in Haxey and two calls regarding poachers in the area in and around Westwoodside. This is a vast improvement but we are not being complacent.

The Neighbourhood team would encourage any persons who are using or are considering using bikes on land without permission to cease this activity as we will endeavour to locate them and have the bikes confiscated.

Please can I remind parents and young people that there are laws around the use of bikes and we will continue to seek out those who ignore the advice we give and what the law states is legal. If you are considering purchasing such bikes please look on the web as there are plenty of sites that will detail the law around the use of such bikes. The Neighbourhood team would thank those members of the public who have rung in to report the bikes being used and would encourage people to continue to do this. There are of course those who do ride within the law and we commend those people but the few that break the law give the law abiding bikers a bad name.

Countrywatch is a group of landowners, farmers and other land users who meet quarterly to discuss pertinent issues. We have now launched the Countrywatch membership scheme which is open to all farmers, landowners and other land users. This membership also includes access to a text messaging service which warns of information pertinent to those members which can be a priority concern of theirs, for example hare coursers, deer poaching, and theft. Anyone wishing to join please contact PC 1839 Starbuck for further information and an application form.

For those who are not into cricket, this is the equivalent of Scunthorpe United playing in the Premier League.

Next season they will be competing against the likes of towns such as Skegness, Grimsby, Lincoln, Bourne and Spalding, to name but a few.

Haxey Library update Following on from the good news that Haxey library is to remain open and to be staffed by Wendy as before, members of the Parish Council, together with Wendy, recently met Cllr Carl Sherwood who is responsible for the library service in North Lincolnshire. All agreed that the library is a valuable asset to the community and that all parties would be looking to expand the services on offer rather than reduce them.

Possible improvements to be considered may be extended opening hours with the use of volunteers, photocopying service, diary of events, local heritage information, links with benefits, North Lincolnshire Homes, job centres etc.

The Parish Council has set up a sub-committee to consider future improvements and would welcome any suggestions from members of the public, whether library users or not. These may be made to the Parish Clerk or the librarian during November. Finally, a valuable Parish asset has been saved for the community – all Parishioners are therefore encouraged to join the Library and make use of the facilities provided. This will pass a strong message to the Principal Authority that their decision to keep the Library open is vindicated!

The November meeting will take place on the 22nd and the December meeting will take place on the 20th both commencing at 7pm in the Hood Room, Haxey. Public participation is welcomed.

The agenda and minutes are available to view on the website and notice boards located at Haxey Memorial Hall and Newbigg adjacent to the Carpenter Arms along with various other items of interest to the parish.

Proposed New Convenience Store Following the recent submission of a Planning Application (PA/2011/1142) to North Lincolnshire Council for the development of a Convenience Store, by Lincolnshire Co-operative, on the site of the Central Garage in Haxey, it was expected that considerable local interest would be raised. To enable Parishioners to air their views, the Parish Council arranged an Open Meeting on the planning application on Tuesday 11th October. The meeting took place in the Stephen Jones Hall in Haxey. Around 70 Parishioners attended including both Ward Councillors and the majority of the Parish Council. The aim of the meeting was to inform the community of the plans for the redevelopment of the Central Garage site and to that end, following a brief by the Chair of the Parish Council on the planning process the application would undergo, a team from Lincolnshire Coop addressed the audience, gave them the opportunity to view the plans and answered questions. The meeting was a "lively" affair with opinions both supporting and objecting to the development expressed. The meeting lasted for well over an hour and all aspects of the application were covered in detail. Main concerns included, parking, delivery traffic to the proposed store, impact on established local shops and residences, local employment and the positive and negative effects of similar developments in neighbouring villages.

Parishioners are encouraged to join the debate and put their views forward either on the North Lincolnshire Planning portal or by writing to the Planning Department at North Lincolnshire Council. The next step for the application is consideration by the Parish Council at its meeting on Tuesday 18th October, when there is the opportunity for Parishioners to address the Council before a recommendation to North Lincolnshire is made. Subsequently, there will be an opportunity to communicate views to the Planning Authority as the application progresses through their planning process.

I was listening recently to how the Nobel Prizes for Peace, Chemistry, Physics, Medicine, and so on came to exist.

Alfred Nobel was shocked one day when he read his own obituary – it had been written by mistake when his brother had died! What shook him most was the emphasis the obituary put on his business successes as an armaments manufacturer and as the inventor of dynamite.

Nobel realised that he didn‘t want those successes to be the only legacy he left behind at the end of his life, and so he decided to use his enormous wealth to set up the Nobel Prize which has honoured men and women for outstanding achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and for work in peace.

I don‘t suppose any of us reading 'The Arrow’ have anything like the wealth or influence of a man like Alfred Nobel, but we might all think a little more about what legacy we will leave behind to make the world a better place.

Trentside Federation School News – St Martin’s Church of England Primary School, Owston Ferry and West Butterwick Church of England Primary School We are well and truly back in to the swing of the learning at both schools in this new academic year. We enjoyed our Harvest Festivals at St Mary‘s Church in West Butterwick and St Martin‘s, Owston Ferry.

West Butterwick Harvest Festival incorporated a mix of the traditional and contemporary with a Harvest Rock and Roll as well as the traditional ‗We Plough The Fields and Scatter‘. The content of the service was very informative, telling us all about the importance of vitamins and fresh fruit and vegetables. St Martin‘s explored the Harvest traditions all around the world as well as the past in our nation‘s history.

Both schools gave the strong message of ‗there is enough for everyone‘s need but not everyone‘s greed‘.

Auctions were held to raise money from the generous harvest gifts donated with proceeds going to the Methodist Chapel (West Butterwick), the Chandeshowri Primary School in Nepal, families in crisis in East Africa and The Forge Project based in Scunthorpe (working with families who are in crisis due to homelessness, alcohol or drugs).

Continuing our ‗worship‘ theme, both schools are looking forward to receiving a special Pilgrimage Candle as part of the 200 years of Church School celebrations. This candle is to visit all Church Schools in the Lincolnshire Diocese. At St Martin‘s we will be able to receive this candle on the day of our St Martin‘s Day Service of Remembrance, making it extra special this year.

I reported on the elected School Councillors at St Martin‘s in last month‘s news. I can now confirm the School Councillors for West Butterwick are :- Amy Harris-Kendrick, Lottie Thompson, Owen Ericson, Daniel Richardson, Daisy Willerton and Anya Wallace-Coyle.

Both School Councils have met and agreed priority areas for this term. St Martin‘s is to consider litter in the community and West Butterwick would like to explore the idea of children eating lunch outside in the warm sunny weather of the Summer Term! St Martin‘s School Council is now putting together a litter survey and West Butterwick School Council is to research the price of picnic benches.

Both schools have ordered new reading books with a number of children being so keen to read them that they are spending wet play and extra time at home enjoying these new stories. What an enthusiastic bunch!

We had some unusual visitors to St Martin‘s recently when two ferrets ‗Beanie and Yoda‘ came to meet our Years 1 & 2 children.

The children learnt all about how to care for and handle ferrets, with some of the history of how ferrets have been used historically to work alongside birds of prey, as well as ‗ferrets for pets‘. Both Beanie and Yoda soon made friends with the children and were extremely popular. We are hoping to bring snakes in next to let the children learn all about these fascinating reptiles!

Finally, we have news of Mrs Clipsham‘s baby! Jake Christopher Clipsham was born on 29th September weighing 7lbs 12oz. We offer the Clipsham family our congratulations!

AGRICULTURE IN THE 19th CENTURY (continued from last month) The enclosure of the commons together with some warping helped to increase the amount of arable land in the Isle. The farmers followed a sort of rotation. According to the famous late 18 th century – early 19th century agriculturist, Arthur Young, the rotation in the Isle consisted of corn, potatoes, flax and beans. Cobbett, the well-known writer, said of the Isle of Axholme: - “ When I first visited the isle of Axholme in 1787 it was „Dame and Porridge‟ and the farmers were doing well. On my next visit it was „Misses and broth‟ and they were doing worse. I now find (1819) it „madam and soup‟ and they are going headlong to the devil”. Arthur Young said of the farms in the Isle; - “A farm of 20 acres can support a family very well as generally speaking they have no fallow, but an endless succession of corn, potatoes, hemp flax and beans”.

The hey-day of hemp growing was in the 17th and 18th century when it was extensively grown and used for sacking, canvas and heavy linen goods. The farmers were advised to “sow after wheat, plough before Christmas, manure after first dressing, a middling dressing, plough again between Christmas and Lady Day. Plough 3 or 4 times, roll and harrow, sow about the middle of May. Pull the male hemp or Femble about August 20th, but leave the female till Michaelmas. Bind the Femble in sheaves and cart into dykes, rod it, water it. Leave it for 2 to 3 weeks. Spread it on stubble for 3 weeks or so till the bast clears away from the bun. Turn it once or twice and when dry bind it into beats, carry home and stack it and work it”. An average crop was 30-35 stone; the price in peacetime was 22 and half pence or 25 pence a stone or 35 pence a stone in wartime.

By the 1850‟s the growing of hemp had declined dramatically.

Even by 1801 hemp was grown on less than 10% of the land. At this time 15% of the land was under temporary grasses, 25% wheat (33% in 17th century), 10% barley (50% in 17th century), 20% oats, 10% potatoes and the remainder comprising of flax, hemp, beans, rope, turnips and carrots.

In the 19th century potatoes became a major crop in the Isle. They grew extraordinarily well on the best warp land so that farmers were tempted to abandon their varied rotation and settle into the growing of potatoes and wheat in alternate years helped by high potato prices.

Warp land produced very good crops and still does. Farmers through the ages near rivers have found the land fertile with a layer (up to 25 feet thick) of alluvical mud left by the floods. The nearer the river the thicker the veneer of mud.

This type of warp land is called „Top land‟ or Old going land‟ and stretches up to a quarter of a mile from the river. As the rivers have had levees built to prevent floods so the natural warping effect has disappeared. Artificial warping was developed whereby the river‟s high tide water charged with mud was led off down warping drains and off to fields to settle.

Above is a 1930 scene of Low Burnham looking north? Next to Mr Bill Pashley‟s house „Beckville‟ on the left, we see the „Olde Forge‟, that was in the Burrell family for about 50 years, closing in the late 1940‟s. Outside the Smithy standing in the road is an early put-off-reaper, still kept by a local resident. Chatting in the front garden of „Beckville‟ is Mr Moody Pashley & Percy Pashley. The local Post Office used to operate in the large house on the right. Later in the 70‟s when in the occupancy of Fruit & Veg wholesaler Harry Maw, he and business associate Arthur Snipe ran the Side Saddle in Austerfield, celebrities came to Low Burnham as Harry‟s house guests. These included, Shirley Bassey still an international singing star, Billy Cotton the bandleader and comedian Alfred Marks.

HAXEY AND WESTWOODSIDE HERITAGE SOCIETY ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING - 13TH. OCTOBER 2011

Thursday 13th. October saw the Annual General Meeting of the Haxey and Westwoodside Heritage Society. Opening the meeting Chairman , Jackie Starr, said that this was a meeting with a difference as there would be two parts to it, the business side where the officers annual reports would be given and voting for the new committee would take place.

The second half of the meeting would be the social side this had, until now, been kept secret from the members as the committee had planned a surprise item to make the essential business meeting a more enjoyable event.

The officers reports were given with the Chairman reviewing a somewhat problematic 2011 but looking forward to a busy and exciting 2012 the Secretary, Mrs. Mary Spalding, recalled the years speakers whilst the Treasurer, Mr. David Hook covered the society‘s financial health.

Voting, under the guidance of the independent chairman, Mr. Malcolm Deneley, then took place with the retired committee being re-elected unanimously and Jackie Starr elected to serve again as chairman.

Breaking for refreshments the members were surprised and pleased to find that a ―Strawberry Cream Tea‖ had been provided by the committee.

Following this a somewhat challenging quiz was presented by committee member Mr. David McColl, the testing nature of this can be gauged by the fact that the winning entry gained a mark of only 7 correct answers from the 30 questions.

In closing the meeting Jackie Starr thanked members for the support of their committee and reminded them that the next meeting would be on November 10 th. when the Leader brothers talk would be ―Yet another Box‖ Geoff Starr

Ferry Ferret Fun The children at St Martin‘s School, Owston Ferry welcomed two furry visitors on Friday! Class teacher Miss Foreman brought her two rescue Ferrets Beanie and Yoda into school as part of a topic on Animals and a great time was had by all! Miss Foreman‘s partner Dean Wain runs ‗Ferret Hutch Rescue‘ from his home in Sheffield and was happy to share his knowledge and experience with the children.

Ferret Hutch Rescue take in and care for abandoned and mistreated Ferrets and every furry friend has their own story. Yoda was used for illegal poaching and his tail was badly broken when he got caught in a trap. Beanie was born with a brain disorder and while he is in no pain he is very docile and struggles to balance when he walks.

The children had devised a series of well thought out questions which Dean was able to answer. They learnt about what Ferrets eat, how they play, whether or not they are nocturnal, whether or not they hibernate and much more. They loved having the opportunity to get to grips with and cuddle the Ferrets, as well as walking Yoda on a lead.

As follow up to the experience the children drew some beautiful observational drawings of Beanie and Yoda and they also wrote thank you letters to Dean.

We look forward to seeing Beanie and Yoda at school again soon.

Axholme Camera Club News The Guest Speaker this week was Mr Richard Egan who had travelled from York in order to show the members his very impressive array of images. Richard was made a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society in 2004 with a panel of Portrait Photographs. He explained that it took him a period of four years to get his FRPS and it was not an easy journey, having to Employ the services of sixty (60) individual models in the process. However, it was the members of Axholme Camera Club who had the benefit of seeing Richards outstanding images.

He put his success down to first of all the planning, knowing what he wished the end photograph to look like before he took the picture. Get as much as possible correct in the camera and do very simple alterations in the computer to achieve the end product. Richard not only had some great images on show but also had a very amusing style of portraying his descriptions to the audience.

Although Richard had given up his time to come to Axholme he asked for his fee to be made payable to the Cancer Research. He said that his pleasure was taking photographs and helping other to achieve satisfaction when taking pictures. Richard has agreed to revisit the club sometime in the new year and run a workshop in Portrait Photography.

The Selection committee have also met twice in the last week to select photographs for the following competitions. First the LPA Digital Battles which takes place on Sunday 30 th October at Nettleham.

Secondly, (NEMPS) North East Midlands Photographic Societies, this is an individual exhibition but the club can nominate a selection of four images from the members entries. And finally the Australian Challenge. This is the first competition between Axholme and our twinning club Castle Hill RSL Camera Club in Sydney Australia. A special web site has been set up to host the images and will allow the judges from both sides of the world to access them and mark each image out of 15. This is split into 3 areas, Technique, Composition and Impact, allowing 5 points for each section. That means each image will be judged out of 30 marks, 15 from each judge. The UK Judge is a Mr Ray Brammall FRPS DPAGB a very experienced photographic evaluator. The Australian Judge is Andrea Robinson AAIPP, AFIAP, AAPS. Andrea is a professional Photographer with her home in Queensland, a very nice picturesque place to live. Westwoodside Church of England School At Westwoodside Church of England School we strive to make learning exciting to enhance topics throughout the School. One way of achieving this is by our long tradition of inviting the wider community in to School. Recent visitors have included our local Vicar, Reverend Jeremy Green, P.C. Starbuck and P.C. Southam. On 10 October, our Foundation Stage had a visit from Mr Mattocks, a puppy walker, and his Labrador puppy, Fred, who he is training as a guide dog for the blind.

As well as figures from the local community, visitors from further afield can inspire and extend the children‘s learning. For example, at the end of September our Year 5 class hosted a day‘s workshop led by a professional artist from the Ropewalk centre for the arts in Barton upon Humber.

Parents/Carers see this as a strength of the School. One Parent commented recently, ‗Some of my son‘s most memorable experiences are when guests come into school. He learns a lot from them and enjoys telling us at home all about it. Doncaster Advanced Motorist Two-way Roads With Three Lanes Dear readers, Britain‘s dangerous three-lane roads have been much improved with the addition of cross-hatchings and solid white lines. Double white lines must never be crossed and keep drivers going in one direction in two lanes and those in the other direction to one lane (there are exceptions to this rule. See the Highway Code) On some roads, particularly on hills, a solid white line is paired with a broken white one. This normally gives the uphill traffic two lanes (so that slow traffic has a ‗crawler‘ lane) and faster downhill traffic just one. However, where the broken white lines are on the side of the single lane, traffic in this lane is allowed to cross the line for an overtake where it is safe to do so.

While the markings are clearly defined, you should always take care and maintain excellent observation on three lane roads, as other drivers may not have your appreciation of the driving system.

Cross-hatchings separate potentially dangerous streams of traffic and drivers should know which ones can and which ones can‘t be driven on.

Cross-hatchings bound by a solid white line are there to separate carriageways or the approach to a motorway slip road. They should never be driven on unless there is an emergency or the police direct you to go there.

Crosshatched areas surrounded by a broken white line are used to separate traffic on some roads, which at some point may have had three lanes. You may enter these areas where you can see it is safe to do so.

These ‗hatchings‘ usually appear on roads with high accident rates. Take extra care when overtaking not to surprise other drivers who are not expecting anyone to drive in this cross-hatched zone. Refer to the Highway Code for more detail.

Dual carriageways are among Britain‘s most demanding roads, because, while the speed limit is the same as a motorway (70mph), there are many more £130 potential hazards to deal with.

For example: Bicycles, mopeds, and tractors can use dual-carriageways, there is no hard shoulder for broken down vehicles, side turnings may not have slip-roads, vehicles can emerge from lay-bys and traffic can join or leave through the central reservation.

Pedestrians are even allowed to cross the carriageway! Drivers in the right-hand lane may have to slow down when turning right across the central reservation. Learner drivers can drive at 70mph on dual carriageways.
