I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has emailed me information regarding your events for the Queens' Diamond Jubilee.

I am sure you can appreciate space is very limited but I do try my best to include everyone.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust News On Thursday May 3rd at 7.30pm Chris de Feu will be telling us everything there is to know about slugs and people who have already been to this workshop have said that it is very interesting so don’t be put off by the title. To many people slugs are just pests that should be destroyed but perhaps there is another side to them, do they have a purpose? There are several different types of slugs and we are asking those who come along to bring some with them if possible. We look forward to seeing you and your slugs on May 3rd. This is our last indoor meeting before the summer. We restart the indoor programme on October 4th.

There will be a guided walk around Crowle Moors National Nature Reserve on Saturday May 19th.

We will meet at the reserve at 2pm. If you are not sure how to get there you can ring Geoff Trinder on the number below or look on the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust website for information on Crowle Moors. There are brown road signs to follow from the M180. It is advisable to have sensible shoes and insect repellent. The walks are open to anyone so do come along and find out more about this fascinating, unique place. We hope to see you there.

All our indoor meetings are held in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel, Low Street, Haxey on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome, you don’t have to be a member. There is a small admission charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments.

Don’t forget that bird food is always on sale at our indoor meetings and at Geoff’s house in Belton, at very competitive prices, just ring if you need anything. For further information about the local Trust group and their meetings please contact Geoff or Chris Trinder on 01427 872051. We look forward to welcoming all regular members and new visitors.

Haxey W.I. held their AGM when six members were nominated for committee.

President Mrs Vivienne M'Itwamwari thanked all members for their support over the past year. The Jubilee celebrations will be a dinner at the Haxey Memorial Hall on Wednesday 6th June. Members have been invited to help with refreshments and hostessing at the parish parties to be held at Westwoodside and Haxey on Sunday and Monday 3rd/4th June 2012. Monday 25th June members were invited to a coffee morning at Westwoodside Village Hall to peruse photographs of the Institute to hopefully put names to the many photos gathered over the last 80 years.

A strawberry tea will be held on Saturday 11th August to boost our funds.

Next months meeting takes place at the Memorial Hall. 7.30pm on Wednesday on 2nd May 2012 and will be our Resolution meeting when members are invited to vote whether or not they would like more midwives in the NHS. Haxey and Westwoodside Parish are busy organising events in celebration of the Queens Jubilee. Events include Concerts in Haxey and Westwoodside Halls, Church Events, Westwoodside Scarecrow Event, and Haxey Olympic Field Day. We would therefore welcome any local talent (singers, bands, drama groups, musicians) to perform in the concerts to be held on Sunday 3 June and Monday 4 June. We are also pleased to announce that the ROYAL AIR FORCE has granted us a Flypast of a Spitfire over the Church on Saturday 2nd June 2012 to coincide with the Parish celebrations for the Queen's Jubilee.

The Flypast will take place between 14.00 and 15.00 hours on the day, weather and other conditions permitting.

With the lighter evenings upon us we must all be vigilant to prevent any opportunity for those intent on committing crime. When thinking of making your home burglar proof, think like a burglar; look for the weaknesses at your address. Simple things like is your front gate open? Is it broken? What are the locks like on your property are they better/worse than your neighbours? No burglar is going to make more work for themselves. Have you signs saying ‘beware of the dog’ these can indicate you do not have an alarm also other signs indicating pets reside often indicate no security inside, also that there may be doors or other means of entry used by pets which a burglar can facilitate. Once inside they will make preparations to avoid being caught in case the occupier returns. Also what have you written on your calendar – does it show how long you are away on holiday? At the dentist till when? Etc… Humans are creatures of habit and keys, handbags mobile phones, l-pads, laptops are usually kept near the door, all quick and easy for the thief to take. Have you listed property that is precious to you including keys, take photos or video footage of each room, but do not leave the footage on a computer or camera.

There are many web sites that you can look at for crime prevention and take an interest in preventing you and your property from becoming a victim. A new nationwide single on-line property search system for the UK Law Enforcement agencies is the NMPR which you can view on the web and read fully on how you can access and register your property. For the first time it allows the police to search any identifiable item of property to view its registered owners details, if it’s been reported stolen to the system by the police anywhere in the UK, by the owner, insurance company or in the case of a mobile phone, a network. Further information regarding this system will be advertised in the near future.

Wroot crime prevention.

The village of Wroot experienced earlier in the year a rapid rise in crime and working together have created their own Neighbourhood watch which the villagers are all actively involved in and have made massive differences to the security of the village. Further engagement and work is on-going.

Once registered, in the event of loss or theft you can flag the item which will then show on the NMPR. You can register as many items as you wish on immobilise and it’s FREE of charge. If you have any of them stolen ensure you flag them on your immobilise account so the UK Police can trace you, return the item and investigate any criminal activity.

Parish Plan Action Group At the Parish Council Meeting in March, it was accepted that the Parish Council should take over the responsibilities of the Action Group. Good progress has been made on many of the actions, with over Jubilee Celebrations in Haxey Parish Arrangements are now well in hand for an action packed weekend to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June. Although commemorative mugs are being presented to local children on Thursday 31st May and Friday 1st June, the programme of events begins in earnest on Saturday 2nd June when St Nicholas Church will be the focus of activities including displays, competitions, refreshments and a lunchtime BBQ (by ticket only). The highlight of the day will be a SPITFIRE FLY PAST somewhere between 2pm and 3pm. Meanwhile Westwoodside Playing Fields will be hosting a 5-a-side football tournament, continuing on Sunday morning. Sunday 3rd June will commence with a Community Service at Haxey Church, followed by the popular Westwoodside Scarecrow event, starting at the Carpenters Arms from 1.30pm. At 4.30pm a tea and concert is being staged in Haxey Memorial Hall and this will be repeated at Westwoodside Village Hall on Monday. Haxey Playing Fields is the venue on Monday for an afternoon of Olympic themed sporting events plus stalls and refreshments and the weekend will culminate in torchlight processions from the two village halls, involving adults and children from all parts of the Parish, and the lighting of the Parish Beacon on the Hood Field soon after 10.00pm.

A full programme will be published shortly. Tickets for the tea and concert are limited but can be obtained from Ann Smedley (752199) or Anne Cooper (753683).

This exciting programme caters for all age groups and we hope that as many parishioners, families and friends as possible will join in the fun and help to make it a great celebration and a year to remember.

Best Kept Village Competition 2012 Haxey Parish Council has entered the villages into this year’s Best Kept Village competition. Judging, at the end of July and will take account of a range of issues, including the absence of litter and vandalism, tidiness, maintenance of public buildings, street furniture and hedges and verges, as well as gardens and community planting. The aim is to reward those who show the greatest community efforts.

There is also some additional prizes, subject to sponsorship, for the best kept churchyard, playground (which we won last year by Westwoodside Playing Fields), community planting scheme and War Memorial. So if you are responsible or involved in any of the above or could just pick up litter in your area please help out. Any volunteers please contact the Clerk for further details.

THE HAXEY AND WESTWOODSIDE HERITAGE SOCIETY Every second Thursday evening of the month throughout the year residents of Haxey Parish are able to meet in the Westwoodside Village Hall and enjoy hearing of the heritage of their Parish.

How has this come into being…………………?

In the late 1980’s a group of people became concerned, that with many changes occurring in Haxey Parish, the history of the villages and it’s people were in danger of becoming lost, as a result a local society was formed to collect and record all that they could find about the past of the Parish.

Their first project was to collect photographs and photocopy them, eventually they were able to obtain more satisfactory photographic copies of their collection and from this small beginning the present Haxey and Westwoodside Heritage Society grew. Within a year of it’s existence it had published:- ‘Historic Haxey Parish’ the first of 10 such publications. Exhibitions on Parish History were regularly held and attendance at Fairs and other venues brought the Society to the public’s notice.

Through the years many projects have been completed, from recording villagers memories of the Parish, building up a photograph collection, assisting people researching family trees and giving out information to all who ask, the Society has led the way to the formation of similar societies country wide.

The most recent project saw the compilation of the personal records of servicemen killed in the two World Wars and named on the Haxey War Memorials, the resulting six leather bound albums have been presented to the Church, the two Chapels, the Library and the two Primary schools ensuring that the records are available to all.

The Society has given financial aid to many local projects, it has also reproduced (to reach a wider audience) the Mother’s Union book ‘Discovery Year 1971’ The Camera Club’s collection of slides taken in the 1970s of the Isle’s villages and people has been produced professionally in both video and DVD form with an edition for overseas viewers.

Made available to all, this has brought an insight into past Parish activities to a new generation of inhabitants.

Some of the projects have spread far and wide, a Family Bible rescued from a store in America was, with the Society’s diligent research, reunited with the Kelsey family of Westwoodside, also a bible recovered from a skip in Bentley proved to be an award to a Westwoodside 1890s schoolgirl and this, following research, was eventually returned to its rightful owners in Sheffield.

The Society has been ably supported by local people and has always had an active Committee who have worked enthusiastically on the Society’s behalf.

Currently members are looking forward to hearing talks on:-The Mayflower Pilgrims, World War 2 Rationing and Villages of the Isle. If you too would enjoy hearing about these and other events in convivial company come along to one of our meetings, listen to our speakers, borrow books from our library, enjoy a cup of tea and generally have a good night out.

Membership of the Society is £5 per year whilst £2 entrance to a meeting includes refreshments.

The Holmes & Garden centre in Epworth kindly allow us to sell the eggs in their shop every weekend before and including Easter.

We draw the egg on Saturday and Sunday ,each weekend. This picture shows myself and Lion President Bren Slingsby with Christine Greaves from Holmes and Gardens.

The egg is being drawn by sisters Hattie (hand in bucket) and Neve Latham of Epworth.

The winner was anonymous and wishes the egg to be donated to the children’s hospice at Bluebell Wood , which I believe is a kind and generous thought.

THE AXHOLME JOINT RAILWAY (continued)

The first sod for the Goole and Marshland Railway was cut on 22 September 1898 at Eastoft. On July 20th 1899 the first sod for the Axholme Railway was cut. It was made into a great occasion. Epworth was decorated with flags, banners and streamers and over various arches were inscribed such phrases as “ Long looked for”, “Progress and prosperity”, “Coming at Last”, “Patience Rewarded” and “Success to Agriculture”. A grand procession wound its way through the town led by the Goole Band.

Several thousand people were present at the ceremony. The day was marked as a public holiday. In the evening there were sports and fireworks.

Medals were presented to children of Epworth as a reminder of the historic events. On the medals were the words “Manus justa nardus” – A just hand is balm.

Construction work on the Marshland Line started in February 1899 and by January 1900 it was open to trains. The Axholme Railway was progressing at both ends. By June 1900 the line was completed north from Crowle to Reedness and east to Eastoft. By June 1901 the line had been extended from Eastoft to Luddington and Fockerby. Meanwhile the southern section was progressing well. On the 25th November 1901, four hundred people watched the first engine (named ‘Epworth’) cross the bridge over the road into Epworth Station. The engine was decorated with flags and an archway had been erected over the line bearing the words “Success to the Work”. In 1902 work started on the swing bridge over the Kennet and Keadby canal south of Crowle together with the viaducts over the drains, road and railway nearby. This section of the line cost about £40,000 and 3,000 men worked on it. The swing bridge and adjoining viaduct was 300 feet long and was the main engineering achievement of the railway.

As Part of the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations in the Haxey parish Haxey Amateur Dramatics are staging a One Act Play entitled Parochial Problems by Margaret Wood.

Westwoodside Church of England School The end of the Spring Term was very busy for us, as always. One of the highlights was the performance by the combined Years 3 and 4 classes of their ‘Evacuation Play’ for Parents/Carers etc. The children rose to the challenge of this musical play, showing very good teamwork. There were also opportunities for individual actors and singers to excel. The children, in addition, learnt a wealth of information about the Second World War in a fun and active way.

On 23 March we held a Sports Relief Day to support the national fund raising. The children were allowed to wear ‘sporting nonuniform’ and were asked to make contributions to Sports Relief. Over £151 was raised. Thank you for all contributions to this worthwhile cause.

Seven ‘Sports Ambassadors’ from South Axholme Academy spent the day with us and assisted our Class Teachers in organising P.E. lessons for each class in the School. From F1 where children ate cereal for energy before and enjoyed their obstacle races, right up to Year 6, children had a positive experience of sport. The South Axholme students, who are particularly interested in sport, were an excellent advertisement for their School.

Always be prepared for the worst-case scenario, whether that’s horse riders, cyclists, oncoming vehicles overtaking a slow-moving tractor and trailer, a broken- down vehicle or even a farmer with his herd of cows. Rural road surfaces can hold any number of surprises for the unobservant and unwary driver. Loose gravel, mud, wet leaves, potholes, raised drain covers, deep puddles, extreme cambers, slippery road surfaces, fallen tree branches, debris from farm machinery.

Good drivers on the other hand, are always ready to encounter hazards around the next bend and alter their speed and line accordingly.

Always remain a safe stopping distance behind other vehicles, If someone is driving too close behind you, allow extra distance from the vehicle in front of you, as this will give you a longer braking time. Allowing this extra time will keep you safer, your brake lights will indicate that you are slowing and this will give the driver behind you the extra time to react to the situation. If you are following a large van or lorry, drop back a little to gain a better view around them.

TRENTSIDE FEDERATION – St Martin’s and West Butterwick Church of England Primary Schools – School News West Butterwick school had 'an artist in residence' (Shaun Clarke) for two days on Monday 12th March and Tuesday 13th March to work with the children on three dimensional art. The Juniors studied 'form' and proportion, using this term's book 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' by Roald Dahl to create their figurines. The children produced Oompa Loompas, Grampa Joes, Willy Wonkas and the range of characters who won the Golden Tickets! The children are now quite familiar with the properties of clay as a medium - a number of them attended the clay workshops run

by Shaun last Summer on our Training Days. The Infant pupils continued with their nature-based studies, when working with Shaun, drawing inspiration from birds nest to consider how a range of other materials, such as twigs and straw, could be added to clay in order to strengthen it and create new properties. The children were very interested in the history of wattle and daub! We hope to work with Shaun again in the near future.

St Martin’s pupils have been getting involved in Owston Ferry’s plans for the Diamond Jubilee.

This is not until June, of course, but the preparation starts now! The school ran a competition for a Jubilee Logo judged by Diane Ekins and Merv Storrs from the village’s committee. Congratulations to the overall winner – Madison Allcock. Madison’s logo will now feature on all of the village’s official correspondence linked with all of the planned celebrations.

HAXEY AND WESTWOODSIDE HERITAGE SOCIETY MEMBERS MEETING - 12TH. APRIL 2012.

Welcoming members to the April meeting of the Haxey & Westwoodside Heritage Society chairman Mrs. Jackie Starr highlighted the recent Diamond Wedding anniversary of Society members Mr. & Mrs. Mole of Wroot and offered congratulations on behalf of the Society.

Jackie then reviewed the Society’s arrangements for a 1950s style Street Party, to be held at the June meeting, to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, members were invited to dress 50s style if possible and to bring along any Coronation memorabilia items for display.

Details of the Haxey Parish Council celebrations including a Jubilee fund raising afternoon tea to be held on Saturday 12 th.

May in the Westwoodside Village Hall were also given.

Speaker for the evening was Mr. Malcolm Dolby retired member Mr. John Steadman Curator of the Retford Museum and Society member, opening his talk ‘The Mayflower Pilgrims’ Malcolm explained that his talk merited three episodes, the pilgrims time in England, the time in Holland and the crossing of the Atlantic but he would however confine this evening to the English period and went on to inform members of the personalities, their relationships, influence, places of abode, and worship.

Malcolm explained how religious attitudes had developed following Henry VIII break from Rome how nonconformist beliefs led eventually to the departure of the pilgrims to Holland.

Following a question & answer session Mrs. Norma Williams gave the vote of thanks and the meeting closed with refreshments served.

The next meeting of the society will be on May 10 th. when Mr. Harold Gardner will talk on World War 2 rationing.
