Some great news this month from local charities.

Omar and his team from The Curry Leaf raised £1700 in aid of Lindsey Lodge Hospice and The Pride of the Isle raised an astonishing £23000 in memory of Alexander Strong, at their event, I am pleased that the Pride of the Isle will be updating Arrow readers on a monthly basis, so watch this space for a year packed with events to raise money for this wonderful charity.

Community News The Isle of Axholme Gardening Club’s AGM takes place on Tuesday 14 February 2017 at 7.30 pm in the Imperial Hall, Chapel Street, Epworth.

There will be a slide show from the previous year’s trips and events, so come along and see what we do. All are welcome. Visitors £2.

Members fees - £12 per annum which gives free attendance to all monthly meetings.

Committee Members will be chosen for 2017.

APPEAL, APPEAL, APPEAL The Epworth Thurlow Pre-School was broken into on Thursday 2nd February between 7.30 and 9.30pm and set fire to. Whilst the fire was contained to the kitchen the whole building has suffered extensive smoke damage and all our equipment and the children's toys and learning materials need replacing. We have relocated to other community spaces for the present whilst the building is repaired. The Pre-school is run as a charity and by a committee of volunteers and we are devastated at the damage. We are putting out an appeal for help in form of donations, fundraising and will shortly be setting up a Just Giving page.

Each dance starts at 2.30pm and lasts for 2 hours.

You don’t need a partner nor any experience in country dancing and these friendly dances will be suitable for all levels of fitness. There will be live music and expert tuition.

There will be a small admission charge of £2 for each dance.

Neighbourhood Policing Priorities as agreed by the Neighbourhood Action Team (meeting Thursday the 20th October 2016. Full details can be viewed on www.humberside.police.uk Ongoing Issues Rural Crime – Concerns were raised over recent burglaries in the area and the increase in poaching.

Update = This is still an ongoing concern, we are monitoring the area and encouraging members of the public to report any suspicious circumstances. Operation Galileo is still ongoing, this is dedicated patrols in rural areas looking for poachers.

Parking in Haxey/Westwoodside.

Had no further reports regarding this parking issue, areas are being monitored by the Local Community Team whilst on patrol and advising drivers of the consequences of any inconsiderate parking.

St Martin's Church, Owston Ferry

There will be Holy Communion Services on the 5th and 19th March at 9.15am.

On the 12th March, the Bishop of Grimsby will be visiting Haxey Church where Holy Communion will be celebrated at 10.45am.

26th March is Mothering Sunday and there will be a family service at 4pm followed by refreshments.

Haxey Methodist Church invites you to join them for the service on the Women's World Day of Prayer on Friday 3rd March at 2.15 p.m. This year we are praying for the Phillipines. This service takes place all over the world and a warm welcome is extended to all. Refreshments are served following the service.

Haxey Methodist church invite you to a digital slide show in the Stephen Jones Community Hall on Thursday, 23rd March at 7.30 p.m. when Peter and Carol Lindley will be showing slides on Australia. Refreshments are served half way through and the raffle will be drawn. All are welcome.

Owston Ferry Methodist Church News Our 2016 Annual Christmas Tree Festival raised the sum of £500 for Action for Children to be used at the Scunthorpe Branch. Our thanks to all those organizations who took part.

Oh boy! Four letters today, all wrote in July. Pleased to know my photo’s arrived. Julie writes her name for first time, bless her. Rumour of the day, Italy will be out of the war by end of week?

Lots of the lads have boils, I think it’s being without greens for so long, we had some today, it’s the first time for months, and then it was only beetroot tops. Go to concert, very good.

Aug.26th.

20 people nearly charged for refusing to do a job. More mail, best week there’s been for mail. I have had one from Elsie (sister in law) July 15th. wrote.

Aug. 27th.

Our little Julie’s birthday seven years old, it’s hard to believe it, how I guess she has altered. It pleased me to know that she picked me out in the photo.

Some airmen in the next compound who were dancing in London four days ago bring good news.

Aug. 28th.

Some men come in from Capou, the last camp we were in. It’s flat now the RAF has gone. Play first round in Tenner quoits Tournament, win 6-1 6-0 and so enter second round.

Aug. 29th.

Still lovely weather. Go to service Aug.31st.

Today is once again our anniversary dear; we spend it apart once more, It brings many happy memories and longings for the future, please God may it be soon. I so much want to be with you again darling, and of course our little pal. Win, second round for Tenner quoits 6-1 6-0. Go to play, very good, better than some shows you see in Civvy Street.

Sept 3rd.

Hear that Italy has been invaded, let’s hope it’s true, but we get so many rumours. Get beat in the 3rd round of Tenner quoits 6-3 6-4, a good game though. No water for getting washed until late evening.

Sept 4th.

The paper confirms that Italy has been invaded, naturally we are all in good spirits, and we were beginning to get downhearted, thinking that they would leave invading until later. What will happen now? Roll on the Tommie’s.

Sept. 8th. 1943 (according to official records At Camp 54, FARA NEL SABINA, on 8 Sept 43 the guards left and source (Clifford) walked out”) Italy out of the war. Oh boy oh boy we can’t believe it; our hearts are full too full for words.

The Itie guards were excited, and we could see that something had happened, rumours soon got round that Italy was out of it, but we took no notice for there is rumours every day. Anyway the group commander was called up, and they came back with the news.

Then, the thoughts of where and what our loved ones at home were thinking and doing. I wonder if I picture you right dear, laughing and crying at the same time, wondering when I’ll be home.

Of course that’s our thoughts now.

Well what followed after the news and talks, Len, Bill, Les and I had an extra brew with extra milk and sugar in, and I went to a thanksgiving service, for we sure have something to be thankful for. Then there was a dance with the band playing. I could jump over the moon. I’m so happy of the future. Please God may every one of us reach our loved ones in safety.

12 midnight I go to bed.

Sep. 9th.

Could not sleep, I was thinking of home all night. This morning there is a lot of banging.

Later- Ities and Jerries fighting each other now. Gunners 52 flying over dropping paratroops on an aerodrome about 7 miles from here. Afternoon, hear that the Ities have cleared the Jerries up. The papers give an account of the Armistice

Community News ISLE CHORAL SOCIETY NEW MEMBERS WANTED

We are looking to recruit men and women of any age to join our choir.

We are a very friendly bunch and rehearsals are held on Monday evenings in the Memorial Hall Epworth during term time. Our programme is quite varied including Handel's Messiah, Stainer's Crucifixion, Songs from the Musicals, Folk songs and Christmas Carols to name but a few.

If you enjoy singing or perhaps just thinking about singing why not give it a go you have nothing to lose and who knows everything to gain. Ability to read music helps but not essential.

Car Wash and Craft Fair taking place from 10am until 4pm at Westwoodside Village Hall on Sunday 2nd April 2017.

The price for the car wash will be £3 per car to include a hot drink for the driver. Inside the hall there will be craft stalls, a cake stall, 'free-play' games for adults and children (dominoes, cards, Jenga, Connect 4 etc) as well as crafts for children to make for a small fee. Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust News On Thursday March 2nd Paul Money will be talking to us about the universe. When Paul came before he told us about our solar system but this time we will be having a much wider view. He is a very knowledgeable and bubbly entertainer so we should be in for a good night, so do come al Young members If you have any children aged 6-12 who are interested in wildlife there is a Wildlife Watch Group based at Far Ings National Nature Reserve near the Humber Bridge. They meet on the first Sunday of the month from 13pm and have a range of activities. There is also a group for the youngest children, Nature Tots, which meet twice a month. These are led by the Education Staff at the reserve. Indian restaurant celebrates first birthday with charity night An Epworth business celebrated its first birthday by hosting a successful Indian charity night.

Owner of The Curry Leaf, Omar Farooque, is a big believer in giving something back to the community which is why he raised a fantastic £1,700 for Lindsey Lodge Hospice at the evening.

The hospice in Scunthorpe has to raise £2.5 million a year to provide a vital service to local people with life-limiting illnesses such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease and heart failure.

“It was a very special night and we were overwhelmed with the support from everyone who helped us achieve an impressive £1,700 for the worthy Lindsey Lodge Hospice,” said Omar from Scunthorpe.

“Credit goes to the staff for cooking and serving up the delicious three-course meal which was made from locally-sourced ingredients. I’m a big believer in supporting local and I buy all my ingredients from North Lincolnshire butchers, green grocers and even vineyards as we sell Somerby wine.”

The restaurant now has a team of eight full-time staff and around four part-time staff. They hope to organise another charity extravaganza this summer.

Omar added: “Business has been fantastic and we have grown a regular custom base, as well as gaining new custom.

“Our secret is imaginative combinations of ingredients and spices that are exciting to the eye and more importantly to the palate.

“We believe in giving our customers the best food experience possible.”

Sharon Tune, from Lindsey Lodge Hospice, added: “It costs the hospice £4.80 every single minute to run; therefore we are thankful for the generosity and support of local businesses such as The Curry Leaf.

“A big thank you to everyone who attended to make it the success it was and we look forward to working with Omar and his team again to host another charity night.”

Oh What a Night! Incredible... Humbling... Proud... £23,000!!

After 4 very successful years of holding our ball in a Marquee on the Playing fields at Westwoodside, the increase in demand gave us little choice but to find a new venue, and the Vulcan Hangar near Doncaster’s Robin Hood Airport proved to be the perfect setting.

The Charity for any new readers and followers was founded in memory of Isle youngster Alexander Strong who died at the age of seven after battling a rare form a Children’s cancer. We support adults and children with cancer and disabilities, and the awards recognise people who have committed acts of bravery and kindness. We are a non salaried charity committed to supporting terminally ill adults and children, creating memories or providing aids and/or treatment to improve their lives.

The awards night this year saw in excess of 700 people attending including ACTRESS Sheridan Smith OBE, a Patron of the awards; "I am so proud to be the Patron of the Pride of the Isle Award and to be here at this year's awards. It is a tremendous privilege. This is an absolutely wonderful charity and it's so humbling to be a small part of an organisation that does so much for so many people suffering from life-limiting illnesses. I am so grateful to Leesa, Maxine and the Committee for inviting me to be here at the Annual Awards, and to be able to pay my tribute to the wonderful people of the Isle. We should all be proud of this fantastic charity and all the good work it has done and will do in the future."

Comments and posts flooded in on the Charities Facebook page, thanking them for a wonderful evening and included; “Fantastic, I thoroughly enjoyed the night as did my 15 year old, couldn't keep him away from the cars!!!!

Also a very humbling experience” “Truly amazing night, so well organised in a fantastic venue, and all for a good cause. Thanks to everyone involved and how brilliant were those little award winners” Big Brother Winner Craig Phillips was compare for the night and posted the following on his social media page; “Pride Of The Isle may only in its 4th year but I'm totally blow away by the staggering £22,412 amount raised to help very special families and their children. It really was an absolute honour to compare and be a part of such a wonderful evening and worthy cause.”

The Charity raised £23,000.00 and pledge to put this back into helping local people. Committee member Katy comments ‘fundraising is incredibly difficult for any charity, but this amount will help us so much and we can’t thank our supporters enough. Misterton News THE MISTERTON CENTRE MOVES TO THE LIBRARY Three partner organisations, currently sharing The Misterton Centre, will move to a new home in the Library on 31 March.

Misterton Parish Council, Bassetlaw District Council, and Nottinghamshire Police will team up, sharing an office and working from the new base in a new partnership arrangement with Inspire. The three organisations have worked together for 10 years in The Misterton Centre, the former Co-op shop.

Chairman of the Parish Council, Barry Cooper, described the move as a great development for the village: “Not only will this move save ratepayers money, but it will also help to keep an essential service – the Library – going. We hope to develop the services there and, in time, open more hours.

“It will be over three years since we started discussing this move with the County Council. All credit to the Parish Clerk, Angela Harrison, and members of the Council’s Office Working Group for their persistence in helping to make this happen.”

Others who currently hold surgeries in Misterton – the MP and County Councillor, A1 Housing and Bassetlaw Action Centre – will also transfer to the Library.

Details of the phone, fax, and e-mail address and other contact details will follow, though the Library’s phone number remains unchanged (890646).

Misterton Parish Council will help run the Library service and is currently recruiting volunteers. Full training is provided and volunteers are needed to work during the Library’s opening hours: Tuesday 2.00 to 5.30pm Thursday 2.00 to 5.30pm Saturday 9.30am to 12.30pm.

This little cutie is Scally, an 8 year old Lakeland Terrier. Scally is a lovely friendly girl who would make an easy pet for an active older person, as she loves her walks and cuddles. She would need to be the only pet in the home, but would be ok with older children. Scally is neutered and vaccinated.

She is just one of several terriers in the Rescue at the moment- all of them are looking for new homes. For more information, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705.”

The Parish Council hopes to open the Library for more hours in the future. The Misterton Centre’s opening hours will remain unchanged: Tuesday and Wednesday 10.00am to 3.00pm Thursday and Friday 10.00am to 2.00pm.

News from Haxey Church of England Primary School part of The Trentside Federation No signs of Spring just yet, but that hasn't hindered what's going on at school!

The upgrading of the Foundation Stage playground has been finished, with the dismantling of the old climbing frame as it had been condemned. The old soft base has been dug up and resurfaced with new concrete and the planting area has been improved with the removal of old thorny shrubs and planting of spring bulbs that the children can't wait to see. The sandpit is in place with a cover to protect it from the elements, and 'Astro turf' style grass has been laid. There are several new sheds to house the children's wellies, a water play area, bug hotel, small world, mud kitchen and chalk board areas. Ofsted commented on their most recent visit that this area required alterations, which we have now completed. Now we just need some nicer weather so the children can enjoy their much improved outdoor space!

Perhaps the resident fairies will make a return to their new home?

Our FS2 children have been busy learning all about Chinese New Year, with 2017 being the year of the rooster. They have been learning about Chinese culture, and how the people of China celebrate their new year.

They have experienced Chinese food in the form of noodles, which they enjoyed especially as they used chop sticks, a first for most of them! They have also worked as a team to construct their very own Chinese dragon, which they showed off to the rest of the school during assembly one Friday afternoon. Everyone was so impressed that the whole class were awarded an achievement certificate!

Year 1 had a great day blasting off into space with Captain Darling! After building the solar system in the classroom, they put on their Space Academy caps and went for a trip around the galaxy, stopping off on Mars and the Moon before whizzing through a black hole to return safely to Earth. After completing the space quiz and tracking down the alien (Max!!) who escaped from his cyberchamber, we all built air propelled rockets and had space races in the hall to see whose rocket could travel to the furthest planet. It was a fantastic way to move our Great Explorers theme from the polar explorers Shackleton and Scott to the first men to walk on the moon.

On Monday 6th February school were invited to the splendid St Nicholas Church for our annual Candlemas service - The Christian celebration of light. It falls 40 days after the birth of Christ, at the mid point between the shortest day and Spring Equinox. It is traditionally the day of the year when all the candles to be used in the church for the coming year, were brought into church to be blessed. We are incredibly lucky to be able to celebrate such occasions in the beautiful surroundings of St Nicholas. Thank you to Rev. Green for such a warm welcome, and to,p all parents, carers and friends for joining us to celebrate.

Years 5 and 6 have been studying World War 2, and as part of their project work were lucky enough to cook some rationing food with Nana Cakes. Ruby Lewin and Matthew Smith describe what they did...

We cooked in the morning and ate in the afternoon. We went out in groups throughout the day to cook foods from the time of the war, such as spam fritters, cottage pie, shepherds pie, corn beef hash, Apple crumble, jam tarts, jam roly poly, sponge cake and butterscotch sauce. We also tried some drinks some of us hadn't had before, like ginger beer and lemonade. Nearly all of us tried something we had never tasted before and liked it. The food was a success, and everybody enjoyed trying new things even if it turned out they didn't like it as much! Daredevil daughter raises funds in aid of hospice A daredevil from Epworth jumped out of a plane to thank the hospice for the care and support her father received at the end of his life.

Laura Hill raised a sky-high £910 in memory of her father, Les Pike, who peacefully passed away at the hospice on Burringham Road after a short battle with colon cancer.

“I get a real buzz out of fundraising and especially because it was for such an amazing place that my father loved so much,” said Laura.

“He was in the hospice for nearly three weeks and the staff were amazing and very supportive. My dad felt very much at ease at Lindsey Lodge.

“My dad was very young at heart and loved life. He was always on the go and was working in engineering consultancy up until he got poorly.”

To give something back Laura decided to take on a testing challenge. “I’m petrified of heights so I thought a sky dive would be a once in a life-time challenge that faces my fears!

“I was fine in the plane but as soon as the parachute was pulled I didn’t feel too good.”

Lindsey Lodge Hospice cares for 140 local people every week with life-limiting illnesses such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease and heart failure.

Sharon Tune, Challenge Co-Ordinator from the hospice, added: “We are truly thankful to people like Laura who take on a scary challenge and beat their fears for a very worthy cause.

“The hospice is close to many people’s hearts and we simply couldn’t continue to provide vital care to those who need it most without the generous support of the public.”
