Wroot Methodist Chapel will re-commence serving its popular lunches from Thursday March 29th.

The lunches will be organised throughout the summer and autumn until 29th November on the last Thursday of every month. These will be served in Wroot Village hall from 12 noon. The ever popular meal consists of ‘piping hot’ steak pie and vegetables, home baked puddings and tea or coffee.

All this for just £4. Come and enjoy good healthy food, friendship and fun.

Haxey and Westwoodside Parish are busy organising events in celebration of the Queens Jubilee. Events include Concerts in Haxey and Westwoodside Halls, Church Events, Westwoodside Scarecrow Event, and Haxey Olympic Field Day. WROOT RESPONDS TO CRIME WAVE! A Neighbourhood Watch Scheme has been formed in the village of Wroot, following a spate of nearly 30 burglaries and break-ins in the last 3 months.

The inaugural meeting of the scheme was held recently and attracted a great response from he community. The meeting was chaired by Mr Ken Bates a Neighboured Watch Development Officer with North Lincolnshire Council.

Mr Bates identified the importance of Watch Schemes in supporting the efforts of the Police, how the Schemes operated, and the significant success in preventing crime in other communities.

North Lincolnshire Council are to provide a full array of crime deterrents including such things as Smartwater and fluorescent marker pens, and a crime prevention package will be circulated to all members of the community.

At the end of the meeting over 20 Villagers volunteered to act as Scheme coordinators to cover specific areas of the village ensuring that the village will be regularly and consistently patrolled Regular Scheme meetings will be held, details of which will be available in the Wroot Whats On face book page. The community thanks Mr Bates for his excellent input to the meeting. The message to all criminals should now be clear Attempt crime in Wroot at your peril.

AXHOLME SOUTH POLICE REPORT Farmland off the B1396 Westwoodside.

Theft, Criminal Damage, Anti-social Behaviour, Off Road Bikes.

Calls for service to these areas saw an increase in recent months and centres in and around the B1396 including Pelfintax, Wroot Road, Idle Bank PC Constable 1169 PCSO 7574 Sue Fahy PC Constable 1839 and Tindlebank and including private land owned Sally Roberts Tina Starbuck by local farmers and others.

The times of reports vary throughout the 24 hour period. The calls include reports of theft including theft of cable, burglary, suspicious persons with dog(s), criminal damage and off road bikes. A considerable amount of work and liaison has been built between Neighbourhood staff and the owners and staff working on land to engage them and to identify where offences and offenders are committing these acts and routes they use. Off road bikes are still being used on land without permission and illegally.

UPDATE; There has been a decrease in calls involving farmland. There has been a reduction in the cable thefts, however as a division we are still experiencing a level of these types of thefts. We would encourage any suspicious activity to be reported immediately to the police. Cable thefts affect the connection of phones, TV’s and broadband to name a few and can massively impact entire communities, isolating vulnerable people and in some cases limiting access to emergency services. At this time further legislation to enable the agencies to deal with offences is being established. Humberside Police and energy suppliers are working together to collate and jointly investigate and prevent further offences occurring. Some suppliers are also working with surrounding police forces as these offences are not confined to Humberside. If at any time you become suspicious of any persons please telephone the police. It is far better that we know at the time in order that we can make checks and also to forward onto surrounding police areas as soon as possible, as it is quite usual for such people to frequent other areas during the course of their activities. Just because the people you see appear to look like they are legitimate this may not be the case so Humberside police do encourage local communities to report anything that on the face of it does not appear normal.

Wroot Crime Prevention Calls for service to the village of Wroot saw a rapid rise in December, where offences included thefts and non dwelling burglaries over a period of time during the night.

UPDATE ; An initial neighbourhood watch meeting has been held with the villagers of Wroot and the Neighbourhood watch co-ordinator Mr Ken Bates which he has reported back stating it was well attended with residents offering their help. There is further work to be conducted between the village, police and Safer Neighbourhoods. There has also been an increase in calls made to the police regarding suspicious activity in the village and we encourage these calls to continue as the village has been subjected to a rise in crime and these types of calls do assist.

Haxey Parish Photographic Competition The Parish Photographic Competition organised by the Parish Council and Axholme Camera Club will again be held this year.

There are excellent prizes on offer so please send your entries in to Haxey Library before the closing date of 27th April 2012.

Entries will be displayed and judged at the Annual Parish Meeting in May. All entries must be taken in the Parish since 1 st January 2011 and by residents of the Parish. Each entrant is allowed to submit two photographs, with the minimum size of each print being 7” x 5”. All entries must have the Title of the print, their name, address and telephone number printed on paper and glued to the back of the photograph.

The Categories this year will be Adult, Camera Club member, Youth 11 - 16 and Junior under 11.

Members of the public are welcome to attend meetings which begin at 7pm located in the Hood Room of the Memorial Hall, Haxey. The APM will begin at 7.30pm in the Memorial Hall.

Heritage Trail The Parish Council will complete the new Parish Heritage Trail shortly. This will involve two main information boards (at Westwoodside Pond and on the green in front of the church) and small signs at 20 places of interest.

The aim is to raise awareness of the important Heritage of the Parish and will be of interest of residents and visitors. The funding is being made available through the Northern Lincolnshire LEADER programme.

North Lincolnshire Council - Article 4 Notices concerning the first part of the Isle Historic Landscape Article 4 for land at Haxey and Westwoodside have been placed in the Scunthorpe Telegraph and displayed at various locations around the site.

Parish Handyman It is with great regret to the Parish Council that the current Handyman has had to retire; therefore the Parish Council is looking for a replacement. The work carried out by the Handyman over this past 12 months has seen new flower beds being installed throughout the parish, notice boards and information boards repaired including a refurb on the St Nicholas Lych gate as well as the removal of trees and shrubs on parish owned or maintained land - a job very well done and for which the Parish Council on behalf of the Parishioners is extremely grateful.

The ideal replacement candidate will hold Public Liability cover and be able to carry out basic maintenance, as required, to Parish Council (PC) owned property / land. This will include:Maintenance of notice boards, grass cutting and strimming of vegetation on Parish Council land. Planting, weeding, and maintenance of any area as required. Litter control, leaf clearance and cleaning out of blocked gullies etc. Installation of planters, watering and maintenance of established flower beds as and when required.

We all need friends, and they need us. Those who have good friends know they are truly fortunate, and the person who doesn’t have good friends is indeed a poor person, however much money they may have.

God is very much in favour of friendship, not just because it’s nice for us to have friends, but also because friends do for us what God would do perfectly if he was sitting in the same room with us – supporting and encouraging us, sharing our joys and sorrows and disappointments, and wanting us to be fulfilled.

Everything the Bible says about friendship shows that it involves more than having a laugh with your mates. In fact, there is a lot about how a good friendship can give great help in difficult times.

I expect many of us have seen geese flying in “V Formation”. Flying in that V formation gives the geese a number of advantages, from which we could perhaps learn. It enables them to fly further, to share the load of leading, and to support and encourage one another. We have been very busy this half term. As part of our Geography work we learnt a lot about Africa.

About the animals and the culture.

We had an African lady come to our school and she taught us a lot about the African culture. We had some fun dressing up and playing musical instruments.

We learnt about China too and celebrated the Chinese New Year. We learnt which Chinese year we were born in and all about Chinese food. We prepared and cooked Chinese food and ate it with chopsticks, it was a bit of a challenge but we kept trying until we got it right.

We had a bit of help from a young man on leave from the army who built us a Chinese dragon. We did the painting and had a parade around school.

THE HAXEY HOOD

Haxey Hood is a traditional activity dating from mediaeval times. It is held on January 6 th annually. The village men folk (and others) jostle and wrestle for a leather ‘hood’. And try to get it to their local public house whereupon there is a free beer all round.

This ancient tradition dates back to the 13th century. It originated, so the legend goes, when the Lady de Mowbray was out riding and her hood blew off. Thirteen local men chased and jostled for the honour of returning it. The man who recovered it had not the courage to give it to the Lady so he gave it to another man who presented it to her. The chase so pleased the Lady that she promised to give them each a piece of land for them selves if they could invent and continue a similar game to be played every January 6 th.

She also gave them the name ‘plough-boggins’, presumably from the way in which they turned the soil in their efforts to secure the hood.

The present day ‘Haxey Hood’ attracts plenty of visitors often including television cameras.

The ‘Lord’ of the Hood’ usually starts the proceedings on the mounting stone outside the St Nicholas Church gates. The Fool, (representing the shy man who recovered the original hood) makes a speech: “Oose agin oose Toon agin toon If thou meet a man Knock him doon Put doon ut im” The Lord, the Fool and the thirteen boggins lead the assemblage up past the church on to the Haxey Hill field (on the north side of the main road).

Before the game proper, a number of sackcloth hoods are usually thrown, nowadays for the youngsters. Each is worth a shilling (5 pence) if taken to the public house. Around 3.30 p.m. the proper leather ‘Hood’ is thrown, usually by an eminent person.

Anyone present may join in the sway to get the Hood to the either the Duke William, Kings Arms or Carpenter’s Arms at Westwoodside. The sway moves back and forth. The church’s surrounding wall often falls victim. Injuries sustained are usually slight. The boggins try, often bodily, to get unwary visitors into the sway. There are no rules to the game!

Members who attended the meeting on Tuesday 24th January 2012 were indeed given value for money. The evening was filled with laughter and lots of good humorous stories from the speaker Mr Ray Brammall DPAGB, ARPS. Rays is also the current President for the YPU (Yorkshire Photographic Union).

Ray had brought along his collection of recent work, approximately two hundred prints, the evening was entitled “New Work”. Prior to giving Ray the freedom of the floor, the chairman Mr Geoff Trinder welcomed the two new members into the club. The membership now stands at 61 with a possible further two new members signing next week. However, Ray began by making sure the new members knew what they were in for. Telling the story of the last time he gave a talk with new members present in the audience, it was reported later that they never returned to the club. “I think he was joking”, who can tell. After this he explained that it took him a very long time to make the transfer to Digital from film and the prints on show are some the first of his Digital Images.

Before he started putting up the prints he made a comment re: a question that he had been asked sometime ago, “you a photographer then, what do you take picture of?” I think he was a Yorkshire man. He answered at the time “mostly landscapes”. He then began to display the images, from the start it was obvious that Ray had made the move from film to digital very successfully. The quality was very high and the variety of subjects was vast. The display included subjects from Scotland, Ireland, France, Switzerland, to the most adventurous and creative images using the computer to enhance the visual art from a normal photograph.

I was fortunately given the duty of thanking Ray, I say fortunate because in this case I found it a pleasure, I finished by revisiting some of the tips that Ray had made during the night, and emphasising what he had said, that good photography goes hand in hand with attention to detail both at the photographing stage and at the printing stage.

Wednesday 1st February was an Open Night, the speaker was the Chairman Geoff Trinder, with his talk titled “Photography My Way”. Geoff took us on a journey round the world with his photographs of birds, animals, landscapes and people. Once again the quality and variety of images plus his descriptions ensured that the members and their guests had a great time.

Geoff has been taking photographs of natural history subjects since retiring from teaching. It is plain to see that his career has an art teacher is helping Geoff to achieve high quality images. In the past Geoff has supplied images for magazines and new papers, however, the most recent publication is a book he produced for the Lincolnshire Nature Trust which was a complete sell out and made £8000 for the trust.

Tuesday 7th February was a special evening designed to involve more of our members to entertain with their photographs, digital images questions and ways of solving problems. There was no program and no time table of events, it was, more of a free and easy night.

It started with the Competition secretary attempting to get everyone involved with some external competitions and an opportunity for the members to develop their skills has Photographic Judges. Through the LPA (Lincolnshire Photographic Association) are to run a one day course to increase the number of Judges available in the organisation. The date of the course to be decided at a later date when the approximate number of possible attendants are known.

This was followed by a presentation to one of our longest serving members Mr John Roberts. John has been a members for the past 37 years and still is a regular on meeting nights. The presentation was a Shield which in the past had been used annually John Roberts for the best Slide. However with the new media Digital it was no long used as a trophy. So because John had won it the most times it was decided by the committee to award the shield to John Roberts.

The rest of the evening was filled with visits to India to see the tropical birds, a day at the Humber Bridge, a demonstration on Judging by Allan Rowsell, plus other educational and entertaining sections. There is also a free after school club on Fridays for children who would like further practice. ‘Atelier’ comes from the French word for workshop.

Our Atelier trolley, partially funded by Gainsborough Kitchens, contains a variety of objects such as glass beads, cones, shells etc. The children choose to make something from these. Sometimes children make a representation of a real place e.g. a seashore, island, airport, face etc. At other times they will make a more abstract, pleasing pattern or arrangement.

HAXEY PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS LETTER Candlemas Service 2012 ON February 2nd we had our annual Candlemas Service in a full St. Nicholas Church Haxey. Each pupil brings a candle and it is lit and remains so during the service. After a welcome by Rev. Jeremy Green, the congregation and children sang Shine Jesus Shine.

Then each year sang or recited a poem based on light closing with prayers by year 6. The service closed with everyone singing This little light of mine and a final Blessing.

School Parking The Governing Body has been informed that a recent pupil consultation highlighted many pupils do not feel ‘safe’ after leaving school. To address this issue we would like to remind you of the school’s expectations, which everyone needs to follow: Please do not park, drop off or pick up in the layby area.

Please ensure your child gets out of the car on the footpath side and not on the road, and that they are supervised at all times.

Please do not park in front of a dropped kerb or driveways.

Please do not park on the yellow zigzag lines or in the raised section of the road. This area is for safe crossing.

Please do not turn in the school gateway, car park or layby.

No cars are allowed in the school car park unless authorised. Only authorised vehicles should enter and park in the school car park.

All children need to leave the school via the pedestrian gates unless being collected by an authorised vehicle No pedestrians should be walking through the school car park at anytime.

In addition to pupils, some parents have expressed concerns about bad driving, including speeding past school. We would like to make you aware that incidents of dangerous driving can be reported anonymously on the North Lincolnshire Council website. www.northlincs.gov.uk Staff always do their best to help the children feel safe at school. They have volunteered to be at the gate in the afternoon to try and extend this further, and we hope that parents will support them wholeheartedly in this.

Road Surfaces Dear readers, Urban roads can be more slippery than country roads as the coating of oil and rubber on the streets becomes more polished by the constant traffic, Take care in dry weather but remember that a light shower (especially on a hot day) is likely to make road surfaces especially hazardous. Look for oil spills on the road in places where cars stop regularly (junctions, traffic lights etc). Unfortunately, grip is often reduced where it is most essential.

High friction compounds (like shell grip) are applied to road surfaces near hazards and accident blackspots (roundabouts, junctions, traffic lights etc). Be aware that moving from these high grip compounds to a normal Tarmac surface can unbalance a car particularly in the wet, on bends and when travelling too quickly.

Finally, slippery spilled diesel is very common on bends, roundabouts and tight junctions near petrol stations. This is especially dangerous to motorcyclists so allow them plenty of space.

Attitude theatre Arts Success!

This year Attitude Theatre Arts Students at the Westwoodside Branch have excelled themselves both in performances & in their I.D.T.A. Exams once again achieving 100% pass rate with some excellent marks from the students. The youngest students age 3years [Rosettes Class] (shown in picture sing a rainbow) up to the eldest, Adults [Adult Freestyle Class] strutted their stuff in there show case `The Seasons`.

This was sadly student Devon Bloods last show with us as she was accepted into her university of choice `York St Johns University ` were she is now studying Theatre Studies.

This is also the 1st year we have had a Magician in the show. Our newest member of the teaching team at Attitude Theatre Arts `Mr Paul Daniel Strother` [shown in the bottom picture] He is not only a working magician but he is also an acting coach & dance teacher in training. This is a wonderful opportunity for boys to feel that they can come to dancing in what is a predominantly female environment.

TRENTSIDE FEDERATION – St Martin’s and West Butterwick Church of England Primary Schools – School News On the 30th of January 2012 West Butterwick Infants in class 1 were very excited to be going to RAF Scampton as a part of their History topic looking at the life of Neil Armstrong. First item on the visit’s agenda was a detailed talk, learning about a number of historical objects that featured in World War ll. The children were fascinated by a monopoly board which used to be sent to prisoners of war with a hidden map of the area inside it!

Following some deicious ‘air-base chips’ for lunch and a colouring competition with a Red Arrow badge for the prize the children were escorted to the runway! All were really excited to see four powerful Red Arrows zooming overhead. The display was ‘awesome’ and staff and pupils went on to meet the friendly pilots who answered the children’s questions and let them hold their helmets!

A visit to a Red Arrow Hanger was the next port of call. Here, the group were given a talk about the Red Arrows and were allowed the privilege of exploring the actual cockpits of the jets!

Finally everyone looked skywards again, to see the ‘Synchro-paired jets’ do amazing tricks above their heads before very reluctantly going home! The whole of the infants and accompanying staff group had a FANTASTIC day and would like to thank everyone involved who made it so memorable.

With their feet firmly on the ground, looking downward rather than skyward, pupils at St Martin’s participated in their Litter Busting Workshops. A key emphasis of these workshops was reminding children of how litter can be harmful to both animals and people. The children were given lots of eco-friendly messages through a fun activity book, before embarking on a litter-pick of the area. Following the litter-pick, the results were analysed and the children gave consideration to where the litter is coming from and what action can be taken to prevent it from happening again.

We are now hoping to go on to learn about how the ‘litter-busting’ eco message can be used to inspire innovative creative projects such as the trolley art of world-renowned artist Ptolemy Elrington who made a range of sculptures from discarded shopping trolleys pulled out of rivers by RiverCare volunteers. The children may not be able to work with discarded metal shopping trolleys but they are intending to create their own sculptures out of recycled rubbish. This project will run over February half-term and Parish Councillors will be coming in to select the most impressive creations, presenting prizes. We can’t wait to see these sculptures – children have the greatest of ideas!

Pupils at St Martin’s are also beginning to think about the village’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations planned for June.

Over the next few weeks all of the children at Owston Ferry will be learning a lot more about the reign of Queen Elizabeth ll, researching the regalia, comparing Her Majesty’s reign to that of Queen Victoria and transferring their knowledge and interest in this subject to create a jubilee logo as well as preparing for the production of work to showcase at forthcoming festivities in the village.

Infant Litter Busters at St Martin's, Owston Ferry, with Sue Housley (Education and Communications Officer Amongst all of this, the children continue to enjoy a Neighbourhood Response Team, North Lincolnshire Council) . ‘creative curriculum’ with a number of our pupils at both schools ‘getting stuck in’ to learning their lines and parts for forthcoming dramatic productions of Jeckyll and Hyde and Wizard of Oz. This term, we are also running three ‘information sessions for parents’ on the themes of ’the teaching and learning of reading skills’ and ‘using and applying in mathematics’. There will also be some exciting developments in the field of Information Technololgy as we eagerly await new resources that will allow pupils to program their own lego robots…. Maybe they can train them to make cups of tea in the staffroom!
