Do you know where your Pension Fund is invested? Last month we explained your options under the Open Market Option provision within your Pension Plan or Scheme, and the different types of income that are available, including those with Health, or Lifestyle issues such as smoking, drinking, and obesity. This month we move on to the Pension Fund itself. We recommend to all our clients that as they near their selected retirement age (5 to 10 yrs before) they should re- assess their investment risk, to safeguard against market fluctuations, and thus restrict the possibility of a reduced fund just before retirement. The average pension fund of clients using an Independent Financial Adviser at retirement today is £50,000, whilst the national average is £38,000, and most do not know where their money is invested. Ask yourself the following questions

How much care would you take when deciding where to invest £38,000? Do you know the value of your pension and what fund/funds it is invested in? Do you know what the individual funds invest in, and what risk is involved? Do you know how much income, including State Pension you will receive? If you cannot answer most of the above you are not alone most people do not understand their pension plan let alone what it will provide or how. That is where we come in Peter Green Life & Pensions Ltd are Independent Financial Adviser’s, and as such have our clients best interests at heart, and not those of the Product Provider. We will cut out the jargon and present your pension to you in plain English so that you are able to make the right informed choice with your retirement plans as you near retirement. One size does not fit all, so why not have your plans tailored to your specific needs. As you near retirement, this becomes even more important, in order to help preserve the value of your hard earned Pension Fund. Remember your first appointment with us is at our cost, for you to make your own mind up regarding using our services, and we assure you the only decision you will have to make on the day is the choice of Tea or Coffee. For Investment planning our recommendations are based upon the Whole of Market

News, News, News, News, News, News, News... In December The Royal British Legion Coffee Morning was cancelled because of the weather. We now plan to hold this event in Haxey Church Hall on Saturday 12th March at 10.30.a.m. Coffee/tea and scones will be served for the usual £1 and there will be a raffle. Joanne Ticehurst, the area organiser for R.B.L. will present awards to a number of our Poppy Collectors and we hope many people will come and support them. This year sees the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Legion. Today, as in 1921 the Legion is ready to help Service men and women and their families. The R.B.L has set itself the target of raising £90 million in 2011 to help fund its work. This includes an exciting new project - the creation of the BATTLE BACK CHALLENGE CENTRE for young men and women who return home from Afghanistan with serious injuries. I suggest we set a target of £90 to be raised at our coffee morning and do our bit to support the R.B.L in their 90th year. Best Wishes Elaine Dunford. R L B organiser for Haxey.

Axholme Camera Club got the New Year off to a good start with an excellent demonstration by Rod Gunn of Doncaster. He explained about the use of layers in Photoshop which was invaluable to a number of members present. It can be a tricky procedure for the less expert, but Rod explained in a clear and easy style. I feel sure he will be paying a return visit to tackle one of the many other issues members have. Brian Jubb and John Naylor visited the club to present their images. Underwater Photography was the title and members were not disappointed. Their diving expeditions in the Red Sea produced an abundance of photographs of exotic marine life on beautiful coral reefs. It was a very entertaining and educational evening. Thankfully, the problem of flooding caused by burst pipes in the Hall had been solved, or it might have been an evening under water for the members, too. Due to the adverse weather before Christmas, Erica Oram from Sheffield had cancelled her planned presentation on Urban Landscapes, but managed to reschedule it on the evening when the competition of the same title was to be held. The competition will now take place at a later date. Erica's travels have taken her all over the world, and it was interesting to see an alternative type of landscape photography. Anyone interested may join any evening, or contact Geoff Trinder on 01427 872051 for more details. Please note there will be no meeting on Shrove Tuesday, as the hall is in use for Pancake Celebrations.

We have received reports of youths congregating around the hall. It appears that they frequent this venue between 6-30pm and 8-30pm on a Monday night on the window sill at the front of the hall. Two motor vehicles on Monday 15th November 2010 had their rear windscreen wipers snapped off. There have also been reports of the youths knocking on the meeting room windows during a parish council meeting. The Neighbourhood team are making regular patrols of the area and will deal with any offences and offenders causing problems for the patrons of the hall. If PC Constable 1839 PC Constable 1169 Tina Starbuck Sally Jameson anyone has any information regarding this matter please contact any member of the Neighbourhood team or if witnessing any incident please phone through for an incident log to be created on 0845 60 60 222. We have already been given some names that have been seen at the location so we would encourage any young people that are not behaving themselves properly to stop making a nuisance of themselves at the hall and allow those who do use the facilities in a proper manner to go about their business without any interruption. UPDATE - Calls for service to the area have diminished and no other intelligence or information forthcoming. Priority to be closed. ST MARTINS CHURCH, OWSTON FERRY – ANTI- SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR AND CRIMINAL DAMAGE.

We have seen a recent increase in calls and concerns raised whilst Neighbourhood team members have been out on patrol that youths are congregating at the church at the top, the conservation area. There has been damage caused to the wooden gate which is of particular historic value and the damage caused cannot be rectified to its original standard. The amount of litter is minimal but alcohol bottles have been found, however not in large quantities. If anyone has any information regarding the criminal damage we would encourage them to contact the police. The Neighbourhood team have liaised with a local resident who acknowledged the presence of young people however now that the damage has been caused to the gate this it is felt that tolerance is decreasing. Other residents have voiced concerns over the presence of the youths. WILDLIFE CRIME

Crime is of concern to farmers and landowners on the Isle of Axholme. It is important that every effort is made to reduce the opportunity for this type of crime to occur and to bring offenders to justice. The Neighbourhood team together with their uniformed colleagues recognise the importance of creating secure environments for farmers and landowners on the Isle of Epworth. There is a Farmwatch/Countrywatch scheme running and together we are actively seeking ways to resolve this issue. This is a continuing concern in the area, and there have been a number of positive responses from the Police in the South ward. A number of persons have been identified as being connected to some of these incidents and have been reported for their involvement. This situation will continue to be monitored and positive action will be taken. With this in mind do not forget the Countryside Watch meeting which will be held at the Red Lion Hotel, Market Place, Epworth which will take place at 8pm on Wednesday 20 th April 2011. This quarterly meeting is open to farmers, land owners and game keepers, It is held to discuss issues and how to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour on their land. Wildlife Crime- 2 males from the South Yorkshire area have been summonsed for poaching offences in the High Burnham/Epworth area. These males with their dogs were on land Professional without permission in the pursuit of hares. Summonses will be Mobile Car issued for the males to appear in court at a later date. This is that the Farmwatch in the area is proving successful Valeting evidence and that there will be positive action taken against offenders. 3 Service males were also located in the Epworth area on 30 January Offering a range of services to suit all size of 2011 and were seen with 3 dogs on land without permission in vehicle to be carried out at your home the pursuit of hares. They have all been reported for summonses to be issued to then appear in court. Another successor work ful effort with a member of the public alerting the police to this Contact Phil activity.

Haxey Parish Council, Newsletter, March 2011 Parish Clerk - Deb Hotson Email: haxeypc@live.co.uk Telephone: 01652 618306 / 07800 569 589 Website: www.haxeyparish.org.uk Power of Well Being & Statement of Intent As part of the eligibility criteria for Haxey Parish Council to exercise the Power of Well-Being, there is a requirement to publish a Statement of Intent as to Community involvement. The Statement in full is available to view on the village notice boards and Parish website, or if you require a copy please contact the Parish Clerk. The ‗power of well-being‘ is the informal name given to the statutory power enabling a local authority to do anything which it considers likely to achieve the promotion or improvement of the economic, social or environmental well-being of their area. The power can give a local council the power to spend on well-being related to:-

the whole of a local council‘s area or any part of it any persons present in the area including those who live, work or visit in the area an individual person‘s activity (provided that it promotes the area‘s well-being) any person or any area outside the parish if the council thinks it will promote its own area‘s well-being.

Quad Bike / Motor Bike track on Haxey Hood Field Many readers will be aware that at the end of January, the owner of part of the Haxey Hood field brought in a JCB to dig out a quad bike track. Complaints were immediately made to the Parish Council who requested North Lincolnshire Council Planning Enforcement Officer to inspect the site. He has since advised that Planning Approval needs to be sought for these works and has asked the owner to submit such an application. Residents are concerned about the noise, nuisance, and visual impact of this track on what is important ―greenbelt‖ and historic landscape land between Haxey and Westwoodside. Residents have also requested that the possibility of the area being designated as a Heritage Site be considered. The issue will be discussed at the Parish Council meeting on 22 nd February. Grass Cutting Tender Tenders are invited in writing for grass cutting of St. Nicholas Churchyard (closed) and the Greenhill, Haxey. Tenders should provide two quotes, one for 11 cuts including the removal of all grass cuttings and two cuts of the central area (Churchyard (closed)) and a quote for the individual price of one cut and removal of all grass cuttings. For further details contact the Clerk. Tenders to be sent in a sealed envelope marked in the bottom left hand corner ―Grass Cutting‖. To:- The Clerk, Haxey Parish Council, Haxey Memorial Hall, High Street, Haxey, DN9 2HH by 5:00pm on the closing date - Friday 18th March 2011

Wroot Travis School News letter We‘ve been very busy these last few weeks. Our Foundation Stage class investigated Chinese food. They chopped vegetables and cooked a stir fry in our kitchen then they ate it with chopsticks. Thomas loved the noodles.

Jasper came to visit us and the younger children had a ride. Jasper was very well behaved, he moved his head about, fluttered his eyelashes and whined but he didn‘t bite or leave a mess on the carpet. We held a non-uniform day for UNICEF and had a cake stall. The children ate lots of cake that day and we managed to raise £95.21 and 25 cents, which someone put in by mistake, who‘s been to America lately?

Not only money back but cheaper electricity too! I cant believe how efficient it is to generate your own electricity and not only that I can’t wait to receive my payment in December 2011. Its true, I decided to have solar panels installed in December 2010 and I have found the results are astounding. You will probably know there are companies out there offering free panels for cheaper electricity. But the downside to you is that all the electricity generated by yourself is paid back to the company. Just think you could have this money yourself, if you invested in solar panels. It is estimated that the money you use to buy the panels will give you around a 10% return on your investment. Wow, better than any bank!! I am at the moment registering the amount of electricity generated, comparing it to sunny days, cloudy days and rainy days. It is amazing to see even on cloudy days I am generating enough electricity throughout the day to give me FREE electricity. If you would like to find out more on how to make your money work better for you and to benefit from cheaper electricity contact

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Wildlife Gardening Mary Porter will be giving an illustrated talk on Wildlife Gardening on Thursday March 3rd to the Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust. She will be giving us lots of tips and ideas on how to attract wildlife into your garden. There are many different types of plants which can be grown in any size garden to attract birds and insects. This should be valuable information just before the spring gardening season begins. Other things such as ponds and bird boxes also encourage a variety of creatures into our gardens and Mary will give us lots of information about these. All our meetings are open to anyone, you don‘t have to be a member, so do come along. Advance notice of our April meeting Cleethorpes to Paradise is the title of the talk which will be given by Ray Bramall and Peter Yeo on Thursday April 7th. These two local photographers have taken a series of photographs of the Lincolnshire Coast over a period of years which they will be sharing with us. No doubt we will see some places we have not seen before as well as some familiar scenes. The evening will be preceded by a very short AGM. We meet on the first Thursday of the month from October to May at the new hall at the rear of Haxey Methodist Chapel on Low Street starting at 7.30pm. There is a small admission charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments. Bird food is always on sale at the meetings as well as at Geoff‘s house in Belton. For further information about the local Trust group and their meetings please contact Geoff or Chris Trinder on 01427 872051. We look forward to welcoming all regular members and new visitors.

The Isle of Axholme

Where You Live

Your Local History

Adapted by Anthony Catherall

THE OLD RECTORY The Old Rectory, the birthplace of Methodism, is the object of pilgrimage from many parts of Britain and indeed the World. The present building is on the site of the previous Rectories, east of the centre of Epworth. In Samuel Wesley’s time fire destroyed the Rectory in 1704 and again in the famous fire of 1709 when the Rectory was entirely destroyed. It was rebuilt in 1709 at a cost of £184.00 in a solid architectural style with good solid ’ships’ timbers for the beams. Until 1954 this building had served at the Rectory for the Vicar but was falling into disrepair. I t was offered to the Methodist Church by the Church of England. It was bought with donations from The World Methodism and is the property of the World Methodist Council. It was restored in 1956-7. Care was taken to restore it to its 1709 state so that any since additions had to be removed. Blocked up windows due to Window Tax had to be opened up. Where bricks were worn they were removed and turned the other way around. Where bricks were worn away, bricks from a building of similar age in the village were used. Many old pantiles had to be removed. During restoration an old arch of 17th century origin was discovered as well as the chimney bricks of a pre 1709 date. These were parts of the Rectory that had survived the 1709 fire. Since the restoration many articles of furniture, pictures and other historic pieces have been recovered and put on display in the Old Rectory. The Old Rectory a Grade1 Queen Anne listed building was officially opened on June 29 th, 1957 with visitors from all over the world attending. In the earlier years from 1957 till 1971-2 August-to-August 75,442 people had visited with the exception of two years the figures grew rapidly. Below is a breakdown of those attendances: 1957-8 – 1712, 1958-9 – 3002, 1959-60 3704, 1960-1 – 4210, 1961-2 – 4405, 1962-3 – 4441, 1963-4 – 4582, 1964-5 – 5146, 1965-6 5982, 1966-7 5990, 1967-8 – 5853, 1968-9 – 5833, 1969-70 – 6006, 1970-1 6666, 1971-2 7910. Since 1972 - 2009 visitor numbers have maintained figures between, 6,000 – 7,000. The new Millennium has seen many positive changes and improvements to the house, and a Physic Garden has also been added. Lust & Deception at Westminster

The cast get into character

Lust & deception at Westminster may be nothing new and are the subject matter of Haxey Amateur Dramatic Society‘s next comedy play, but much is new about the production. Most importantly, this will be Mary Lenanton‘s first full length play at Haxey, although she is a frequent producer at Retford Little Theatre. John Brown makes his debut with the Society, and also puts his previous experience to good purpose in a most unusual and demanding role. Returning to the Haxey stage, although not strictly newcomers, are Nigel Smith, after a long absence, Andrew Lee, Colin Emery, Sheila Morrey & Pat Ellison. Finally, this will be the first time the Society has put on 5 performances. Recent productions have sold out on most nights, and the group would like as many people as possible to have the opportunity to enjoy this great comedy. The play is ―Out Of Order‖, another rollicking romp written by Ray Cooney. John Spittlehouse leads as Richard Willey, the suave Government Minister, who has planned to spend the night with the attractive but dizzy Jane Worthington (Lynsey Yeardley), who just happens to work in the office of Her Majesty‘s Opposition. The attempted affair is beset by a series of frustrating misadventures, including the discovery of a very disconcerting presence, played convincingly by John Brown, and by the appearance of both Richard‘s sophisticated wife (Sheila Morrey) and of Jane‘s distraught husband (Andrew Lee). The best efforts of the M. P.‘s upright but nervous Parliamentary Private Secretary (Nigel Smith) to extricate his boss only lands them both in deeper trouble. The interventions of the severe Hotel Manager (Joan Young), the nimble and wily old hotel waiter (Colin Emery), a comely Italian maid with only pidgin English (Pat Ellison), and the bossy but attractive Gladys (Emma Speers, in her second role at Haxey) do nothing to improve matters. For an evening of merriment & laughter, make sure you book early for this play. The performances are at 7.30pm on Friday & Saturday 1st & 2nd April & on Thursday, Friday & Saturday 7th, 8th & 9th April in Haxey Memorial Hall. Tickets (£5) are on sale from 10.00-12 noon on Monday 14th March in the Hood Room at Haxey Memorial Hall, & thereafter from 9.00am-5.00pm at Green Hill Stores, Haxey, courtesy of Bev and Greg Suszczenia. Dying Matters 2011

ABS Feeds formally K & H Feeds

Because we are unwilling to talk about death many of our wishes at the end of life will be ignored or unfulfilled. If we do not communicate our thoughts about the future, and those around us do not listen, the control that we could achieve at this time will not happen and it has been said that what we most fear about death is the loss of control. It is important to remember that talking about illness and death does not bring it closer but it does mean that we are in control of our life so we can live as well as possible until death. In March 2010 the first Dying Matters day was held in Scunthorpe and those who attended found that the information they received was useful, practical and supportive. It was planned and run by the Integrated Palliative Care team which comprises professionals and interested parties in North Lincolnshire including Macmillan and Lindsey Lodge Hospice.

Haxey Church of England Primary School Dr Gerda Pohl gave the pupils a really warm vote of thanks when they presented her as a trustee of PHASE Worldwide with the cheque. PHASE (Practical Help Achieving Self Empowerment) has already built a one room school in a remote village in Nepal with funds raised by Haxey pupils previously. Now the pupils‘ target is for £800 to fund a teacher for a year. Haxey pupils had wanted to know how it felt to have to walk for three hours to get to school. Their sponsored walk from Haxey to Epworth and back again gave them that experience. The task now for Year 6 is to plan a Nepal project as part of their school work and also to raise the remaining £200. We all wish them well in their ambitious project.

Candlemas Service ON February 2nd we had our annual Candlemas Service in a full St. Nicholas Church Haxey. Each pupil brings a candle and it is lit and remains so during the service. As usual the individual year groups sang or recited something on the theme of light. Arthur Franks Foundation Governor

Driving Hazards

Dear readers, A hazard is anything that contains an element of potential danger. That includes junctions, roundabouts, hillcrests and bends, as well as the position and movement of other road users and even the weather. Imagine combining all six of these elements in one scenario and you have a massive potential for danger. To an Advanced Driver, any junction, say a roundabout, traffic lights or a left or right turn, is a hazard, not just a child running into the street, a blind bend or an accident black spot. This means that it is essential for you to position your vehicle correctly when dealing with them, giving you that one essential safety ‗ingredient‘ sufficient time to react. To minimise your chances of being affected by other peoples mistakes or adverse driving conditions you must take a planned and systematic approach to your driving. What is Commentary Driving: Commentary driving- describing aloud everything you see, think and do whilst driving- is a great way to hone your driving technique. On a busy road or in an urban environment you‘ll often find there is so much going on that you can‘t describe it all quickly enough – you simply can‘t keep up verbally. This proves how many thought processes a vigilant driver goes through on an everyday drive. Commentaries illustrate how much you are really seeing and the level of thinking involved, not just your actions. Driving Plans: The three simple questions. What can be seen? Plan your drive on what you can see ahead, to the rear, and all around you. What cannot be seen? Remember that danger can exist on every hidden section of the road What might reasonably be expected to happen? Keep a look-out for clues to dangers that may lay ahead, eg: Junction warning signs give early notice that a driver may be waiting to pull out ahead. Dustbins outside houses on a twisty road mean that there could be a stationary dustbin lorry around the next bend. Loose hedge clippings or straw on a country road, warn that there could be a slow moving tractor or combine harvester round the next bend. Don‘t follow buses to closely or you may get stuck behind them when they pull up at the next stop. Drop back a little and keep a lookout for the next stop, as it provides advanced warning of an opportunity to pass. Prioritise hazards in order of importance. Deal with each one accordingly. With these potential hazards in mind drive within the limits of what you can see, never assume anything and plan for danger to emerge from obscured areas.

TRENTSIDE CONFEDERATION SCHOOL NEWS (ST MARTIN’S AND WEST BUTTERWICK C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOLS) We have been very busy over the last few weeks in particular. Following the severe weather back in December 2010 both schools wrote to our local MP Andrew Percy to express concern about the treacherous roads and pathways around the villages of Owston Ferry and West Butterwick. The snow and ice had caused havoc for both schools with a major problem being lack of gritting and ploughing of roads, as well as clearing of pathways on routes to school in particular : A very important Health and Safety issue. On Friday 4th February Mr Percy came to meet with the Headteacher, staff and parents to discuss these issues in more detail. He was very supportive – Mr Percy is very familiar with the Trentbank Road which is an important part of the school bus route. A number of parents and staff have come off this road recently in the icy and snowy conditions. Mr Percy was interviewed by three pupils from Class 3 at St Martin‘s for their Class magazine. Questions ranged from 'Have you ever seen the Queen?' to 'Are you going to do anything else for the soldiers in Afghanistan?'. The schools now look forward to hearing how Mr Percy can progress this issue, hopefully before the next incident of severe weather. The week before Mr Percy‘s visit, West Butterwick school held a very special Act of Collective Worship in celebration of the school‘s success in connection with the ‗Bibles for Children Project‘. This scheme was set up to support schools in helping children to understand the Christian religion through the provision of Bibles and Bible related materials to Primary School children and their schools. The charity was set up in 1997 and during this time it has proved to be very successful, providing Children's Bibles to 264,000 pupils in over 1,100 schools in 105 Local Education Authorities throughout England, Wales and Scotland. West Butterwick Primary School has received 100 Bibles via this brilliant scheme (The Children's Bible and The Good News Bible). The children were presented with their very own Bible (containing a personalised name plate to mark the occasion) today (Wednesday 26th January) in a special presentation during our whole school Collective Worship. The presentation was attended by Mr Ian Walker (our Vicar), Mr Bowker and Mrs Coggon (Members of West Butterwick Parochial Church Council) and Mrs Harvey (Bishop's Visitor). The children were all very excited and couldn't wait to receive their very own personalised Bible for their use throughout their time at West Butterwick Primary School. The pupils take their Bibles with them when they eventually leave as Year 6s and we hope that they will always remember when they got them and use the Bibles throughout their lives in their own personal way. During the worship pupils were asked how they would make use of their Bibles, not just at school but later on when they finally leave our village Primary School. Answers ranged from 'to guide me in my life' to 'looking up stories about Jesus and God's special people'.
