Arrow

Signs of Spring are upon us with the glorious sound of the birds singing in the morning and the long awaited splash of colour from the daffodils. The seasons give us hope as we sense life around us changing and Spring brings evidence of new life and energy. We are so lucky to have so many lovely walks around our villages where Spring can be fully experienced.

Walks can be experienced with local clubs too, so you don’t have to venture out on your own. Find out more information from Pathfinders and Haxey Walkers on pages 4 and 19.

If you would like to advertise your local business please be in touch. Advertising starts from as little as £30 + VAT per month.

The May issue deadline for adverts and content is Friday 12th April. The Arrow will be delivered by the 1st May.

Wishing all our readers a Happy Easter.

Misterton Primary and Nursery School celebrated in style for World Book Day 2024. The children had such a great day and often stayed in character all day, with the game for lunchtime being ‘shake hands in the style of their character.’ A great game invented by our children and made us all laugh at all the variations. A lovely day was had by all and our families joined us for Book and Biscuits at the end of the school day. Sharing books and taking part in DEAR Drop everything and read.

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST

April is such a lovely month. Clocks have moved forward to give us more daylight hours which inspires us to get out and about. On that note have you thought about organising an event (or entering one) to fundraise on our behalf? We have printed T-shirts available and we can help with publicity.

There are various events if you are active: half marathons are taking place in Birmingham, Sunday 5th May; Bristol on Sunday 19th May; Manchester on Sunday 26th May; London on Sunday 1st September; Great North Run, Newcastle on Sunday 8th September.

For something a little else energetic how about organising a quiz evening, a book or plant sale, be sponsored to lose weight (good incentive!) or abstaining from alcohol, smoking or junk food for a month…..or two! And for adrenalin junkies, how about abseiling or skydiving or trying a zipwire?

If you fancy any of the above do get in touch with us. Our details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), first floor (lift available), Room 104. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk Don’t forget, we will help publicise your fundraising efforts beforehand and can include a write-up and photograph on our website afterwards.

Big or small, everything you do will help. Just get in touch with us.

World Book Day is a highlight on the calendar at Haxey CE Primary School and this year was another fabulous day! Children could either dress as a character from one of their favourite books, or wear their pjs and bring in their favourite bedtime story to share. School had a Hogwarts feel to it, with Harry Potters, Hermiones and Luna Lovegoods in each class, although Willy Wonka was also a very popular choice! In Year 6, everybody turned into a detective to solve the Mystery of the Missing Macaw, which was a great distraction from all the hard work going on in Year 6 at the moment as they build up to SATS. Elsewhere throughout school, classes had art competitions, designing alternative covers for stories and several story times throughout the day.

Each class also had a very special delivery of brand new class library books - we would like to say a huge thank you to our wonderful PTFA for these - children could be found in all corners of school sharing these and they have definitely created a buzz about reading!!

VACANCIES FOR LOCAL ON-CALL FIRE OFFICERS

Misterton’s Fire & Rescue Service is recruiting On Call officers; the recruitment window is open until Monday 15 April. The current team is made up of men and women of all ages, who live or work in the villages of Misterton, West Stockwith, and Walkeringham - they all have different strengths (and weaknesses), life experiences, and knowledge. This makes them a strong team when faced with difficult or challenging situations. Members of the team are pictured.

Read what it’s all about at www.notts-fire.gov.uk/careers/on-call-firefighters/. Misterton Fire Station is also home to a medical co-response vehicle, which is staffed by firefighters to respond to medical emergencies in the area on behalf of the East Midlands Ambulance Service. To ensure their skills are kept up-to-date for any incidents, the crew trains every Tuesday night between 6.30-9.00 pm. Misterton is also home to a unique community safety facility called Risky Rooms. Set up in the drill yard, this is a room designed and set up to emulate a normal home that contains a variety of fire hazards and other risks. Staff at Misterton run regular tours for school children where they highlight the risks that exist, and how they can be rectified.

There’s more on the Fire Station’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/MistertonFireStation

1st Isle of Axholme BP Scouts March 2024

Scouts and cubs have been busy this month working towards a number of badges aswell as preparing for their first overnight camps of the year. The scouts will go to Summerbridge Church Hall, Nidderdale for their first camp, which includes a hike to Brimham Rocks. They will practice their culinary skills, leading indoor games plus lots of mapwork and compass navigation. On the Sunday we will learn some adventurous skills such as axe throwing, air rifle shooting and archery, followed by an inflatables session at the local swimming pool. The cubs will have their first sleepover at West Butterwick Hall, with lots of games and finishing off their entertainer badge. Cubs have been working towards their wolf pack star awards, learning about constellations (night hike stargazing), the RSPB, country code and renewable energies. We have been continuing our science badge looking at the aeronautics of flight and making and testing paper aeroplanes. We have been preparing for our camp entertainer badge finale too (photos). They will also complete a first aid session, to make sure they all know how to keep themselves safe and what to do in an emergency. Scouts have welcomed an 8-strong team of students from Lincoln University who have been training us in a media project for our photography badge. The scouts had the choice of making a stop motion animation film using building materials such as Lego and green screen. The students taught them the basics and then have been hands on helping them create scripts and film. The other group are using Capcut to make a tiktok style film. They have learned all the types of shots they could take for their raw footage and then how to edit. It is brilliant to have such a knowledgeable team and an opportunity like this to offer the scouts!

Beavers section will soon restart - please get in touch if your child (aged 5-8 years) would like to join us this Term.

Sections all meet at the Westwoodside Village Hall: (Cubs, Scouts and Senior Scouts) meeting on Monday evenings 6pm (Cubs), and 7pm (Scouts & Senior Scouts), and Beavers (tbc) probably on a Tuesday evening at 6pm (from September).

All enquiries about Scouts or Beavers should go to Gregor on: gagibb79@aol.com, and Cub enquiries should go to Ma hieu at: ma hieu_maloigne@mentor.com. Remember, we are still looking to recruit more Beavers leaders/ helpers for this section. Please get in touch if this is something you would like to do.
