Wow what an eventful weekend the 10th May proved to be! Just as I was planning my trip to Wembley, Crewe beat Doncaster Rovers in a shootout to make the play-off final! Shortly after my return from the pub the most amazing site across the skies of Yorkshire. We were dazzled by a fantastic display of the Northern lights. And to top it all off an evening of the Eurovision song contest!

On page 17, read about local teen sensation Freddie Halkon performing at the famous Leadmill at Sheffield alongside The Reytons on their sellout tour and a surprise debut headliner!

The July issue deadline for adverts and content is Friday 7th June. The Arrow will be delivered by the 1st July.

Haxey & Westwoodside Heritage

Society's next meeting is on 13th June at 7.30pm in Westwoodside Village Hall. David Scrimgeour will be speaking on "Yorkshire's Watermen", illuminating the lives of the hard working people and their families who plied their trade on the waterways of 19th and 20th century Yorkshire. Not to be missed! All welcome, £3 including refreshments.

June is a busy month for Isle

Choral Singers, starting with a special concert on June 1 in conjunction with the First United Methodist Church Cathedral Choir from Montgomery, Alabama, USA. The Alabama choir are visiting Epworth as part of their "In The Footsteps of John Wesley Tour," performing a programme of sacred and spiritual music and invited Isle Choral Singers, as the local singing ensemble, to join them for a special joint concert in St Andrews Church, Epworth at 2.30pm on Saturday, June 1st. The First United Methodist Church in Montgomery was founded 195 years ago and has a rich tradition of singing a wide variety of music, from the great classical works of Bach, Handel and Mozart, to AfricanAmerican spirituals to contemporary pieces. Isle Choral Singers will perform a mixed selection of religious and secular pieces. Entrance to the concert is free and there will be ample chance to meet and socialise with our American guests - in fact, they have requested it - over refreshments after the concert.

Epworth Music Day is a firm fixture in the social and musical calendar and Isle Choral Singers are now a firm fixture in the programme for the day. They will be performing at least two spots on June 22nd.

Then a mere ten days later, you are warmly invited to enjoy a great selection of songs, including popular numbers from musical theatre, at the Isle Choral Singers Summer Concert on July 13th at St Nicholas' Church, Haxey. So ... lots of chances to see and hear your local choir in action. Isle Choral Singers look forward to seeing you at one of them , or better still, all of them!

At Misterton Primary and Nursery School we are always looking for ways to help our own wellbeing for the children, staff and parents. This week’s focus was about listening to the lyrics of a song, ‘Kacey Musgraves-Golden Hour.’

The children listened to the song and then created artwork based on how it made them feel and the pictures it created in their heads.

The children were eager to share their work and some children have themselves found the artist and listened to further songs by the artist.

We also have secret artists in the school who are part of the staff teamkeep your eyes open if you visit us.

SAFE CYCLING FOR CHILDREN

The District Council held a safe cycling session for children at the muti-use ball court on the Misterton Sports Ground last month. Supported by Clancy Briggs Cycling Academy, dozens of young riders from across Bassetlaw were shown how to ride—and stop—safely. District Cllr Lynne Schuller, who heads up the Health & Wellbeing portfolio, said: “Cycling, we all know, is a great way to get and stay healthy and a good way to stay connected. Learning the skill early in life helps to adopt healthy habits and have fun keeping fit. It was really good to hear excited children proudly sharing how they can now ride a bike. This safe supportive session helped in not just bike riding but increasing confidence.”

Five Villages First Responders Team Celebrate 20th Anniversary

The volunteer Five Villages First Responders (FVFR) group who respond to medical emergencies in the local villages across North Nottinghamshire and North Lincolnshire have celebrated their 20th year of operation with an event held in Misterton.

The Community First Responders (CFRs) who work in partnership with East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) celebrated on Saturday 27th April by inviting members of the public along for free tea, coffee and cake and to see the work of their local responder team. FVFR founder and group coordinator Martyn Johnson said: “Our 20th anniversary event was a real success and I’d like to thank all those who attended to celebrate with us. We had a great day and were able to say thank you to our current and past volunteers for their huge contribution to the local community. We also ran a public CPR & AED awareness session which was well attended and rounded the day off with lots of cake!”.

During the last two decades the life-saving scheme, which launched back in April 2004, has been dispatched to nearly 3,300 medical emergencies in Misterton, Beckingham, Walkeringham, Gringley on the Hill, West Stockwith and other nearby areas. Because of their location within the local community the responders are dispatched by the Ambulance Service to relevant incidents following a 999 call. They can arrive rapidly and give care to patients until the Ambulance is on scene, helping to improve chances of survival in emergencies such as a cardiac arrests and other medical emergencies. The group have also supported the installation of over twenty Community Public Access Defibrillators over recent years and have trained hundreds of members of the public and school children in life-saving skills. Martyn went on to say: “I am immensely proud to have been the coordinator of our team for the last 20 years and feel very privileged to volunteer alongside such a dedicated group of people who really are at the heart of the local community. I would like to say a massive thank you to all of our team, past and present, and also to all the local organisations, businesses and individuals who continue to encourage and support FVFR with fund raising and kind donations, and have done so since we launched twenty years ago.”

Martyn presented awards and thanks to Colin Gibson and Libby Stennett for their dedicated service, both of whom have been involved in the organisation since 2004. Mary Riches received an award for her ten years of volunteering as a CFR, before the team then surprised Martyn with an award of his own to show their gratitude for his continued support and leadership as the team’s coordinator.

FVFR will continue their hard work within the local community and are always looking for further suitable and committed volunteers to undertake the training to become a CFR. For further information please visit the website at www.fvfr.co.uk, email contact@fvfr.co.uk or see the teams Facebook page.

Local teen Freddie Halkon (19) supports The Reytons at

the return to the Leadmill tour!

After applying to be a support act, Freddie from Haxey, received a call inviting him to support Rotherham based indie band, The Reytons on Bank holiday weekend.

Describing it as an “opportunity of a lifetime” an audience of more than 1000 Reyton fans chanted his name throughout the venue, as he took to the stage.

He said “It was incredible! I want to say a massive heartfelt thank you to The Reytons who went above and beyond to welcome me, and to everybody who bought a ticket. And an even bigger thank you to the crowd who absolutely blew me away. It felt amazing to be so supported.”

Bursting to the music scene last year, after persuading his dad to buy him a amp, Freddie started singing covers, anything from Elton John to Gerry Cinnamon and Oasis.

Now writing his own material, relating his music to friends, family and his home town of Epworth, Freddie is a regular, busking in the streets of Scunthorpe, York and Leeds and performing in venues across The Isle of Axholme, Doncaster, Sheffield, Mexborough and Leeds,

Songs which include Fret don’t Fret, Four of a kind, Pushbikes and Late nights are available on Spotify, Amazon Music and Apple Music. Give his page a follow so you can see where you can see him live.

Off the back of the incredible response from supporting the Reytons, Freddie has landed his first headline show at The Imperial Mexborough, Friday 26TH July. TICKETS ARE ON SALE.

1st Isle of Axholme BP Scouts May 2024

More awards! After the successful graduation ceremony for scouts by their Lincoln University Media students, we have also been privileged to award 4 more scouts with their Bronze DofE awards. This shows great resilience and skill in their camping, navigating and expedition element, but then a commitment to complete 3 months of a new skill, a physical activity and a service to other people, so very well done!

The newest DofE cohort have begun their silver award, completing a 3 day expedition in the western peak district, near Buxton. All their scout training paid off and they were excellent, with great teamwork and seemed to have a lot of fun! Roll on their assessed expedition in June in Skipton.

All Scouts have been working towards their Venturer badge too which brings together lots of different aspects of scouting skills from vaulting, throwing a life rope, swimming in clothes, gaining a level of proficiency in at least 2 sports and completing an adventure journey (which included emergency incidents such as first aid, code cracking and fire-lighting). This month will also see them gain their junior First aider badges, trained by an external provider, and a backwoodsman skill day (preparing and cooking rabbits and fish on an open fire) and an overnight bivouac out.

Cubs have been working hard both in the hall working on teamwork skills and badgework, but also out of the hall. Last weeks geocaching was very successful and lots of fun!

Due to a number of cubs moving up to scouts, (and scouts moving up to senior scouts), in September we will have a smaller number of cubs in our wolfpack. If your child would like to try cubs in a smaller supportive atmosphere, do get in touch. Beavers section will soon restart - please get in touch if your child (aged 5-8 years) would like to join us this term.

Sections all meet at the Westwoodside Village Hall: (Cubs, Scouts and Senior Scouts) meeting on Monday evenings 6pm (Cubs), and 7pm (Scouts & Senior Scouts), and Beavers (tbc) probably on a Tuesday evening at 6pm (from September).

HRH PRINCESS ANNE PRESENTS MISTERTON MAN WITH ANNIVERSARY PLAQUE

Andrew Stennett, proprietor of Grove House Stables in Misterton, was awarded the Pony Club’s 25th Anniversary plaque by HRH Princess Anne (pictured). The presentation was on Tuesday 16 April 2024.

Andrew said: “I am delighted to accept this award and I hope for many more years working with the Pony Club.” Andrew established Grove House Stables in 1991 with one horse, one pony, and a very muddy field! Since then, he has developed the site with many more horses and ponies and purpose-built equestrian training facilities. When Andrew saw the ground-breaking new Pony Club centre initiative, after being a member of Grove Hunt Pony Club, he was excited to be able to give his riding school pupils the experience of being a Pony Club member, too. Grove House Pony Club centre has given riders the opportunity to progress and develop their relationship with horses and riding. The Pony Club currently meets on two evenings a week, still using the format that Andrew developed and shared with his fellow riding school proprietors 25 years ago.

MISTERTON’S ROLE IN D-DAY LANDINGS

Thursday 6 June sees the national commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. Misterton had a particular role: D-Day in 1944 began Operation Overlord in the Second World War to retake Europe from German occupation. It was one of the most iconic dates in the 20th century. The local area played several significant and top-secret roles in this event. Local historian, David Seymour, will reveal all in his talk at 5.30pm in Misterton Library. Accompanying David’s talk will be an exhibition, which will stay in the library for two weeks. From 6.00pm, there’s a bring-your-own picnic on the old school field. There will be a bar, live music of the period – and wear clothes of the time, if you wish. At 8.30pm, the beacon on Jubilee Garden will be lit and the national proclamation read.

Epworth and Owston Ferry Loop

31 walkers met in the car park adjacent to St Mary's church in the centre of Epworth. The awful weather on the previous day had fortunately given way to a dry and bright ( but very windy ) morning. Just as well really because the walk was mostly across wide open flat countryside where there is not much protection from the elements. After the briefing we were straight out of the car park and along behind the church and into those open fields. We headed east out of Epworth on good paths and tracks before cutting south on Narrow Lane and Paddock Lane towards our coffee stop.

For our coffee stop we found some shelter from the wind on the edge of a small wood. Then we went more directly south on Blackdykes Road to enter Owston Ferry itself. So far so good . No mud and no sign of rain . Just that stiff breeze ! Our lunch stop in Owston Ferry found us at the splendid Crooked Billet where the equally splendid hosts Rachel and Jonathan had opened up specially for us. What a great pub and what a great couple. Their friendly hospitality was wonderful and their enthusiasm for the heritage of the pub and the village did them proud. Pay them a visit if you are in the area. https://www.facebook.com/the.crooked.billet.owston.ferry

When the time came to leave The Crooked Billet we made our way up through the main street and then out of the village via Burnham Road . This starts as a tarmac road but soon turns into a farm track as it heads west towards Low Burnham. It also climbs deceptively but steadily uphill until it reaches High Burnham ( the clue is in the name ). At High Burnham we turned north to return to Epworth. The route from here was again across open fields and farmland. But again there was no mud. After so many muddy walks in recent weeks this (and the welcome at The Crooked Billet) was the highlight of the day.

We arrived back at Epworth just across the road from The Old Rectory ( home of Epworth's famous son John Wesley one of the founders of Methodist Movement ) And then back to the cars. Thanks to Neil for back-marking and to Steve for the photos. 10.5miles 4hrs 20min Charlie Pratt Pratt
