Epworth and District Flower Club

Easter Workshop

In April the members met for a workshop evening. Almost all of the membership was in attendance to watch the demonstrator, Sarah, create an Easter display. After only a few minutes Sarah had used tulips, narcissi, various greenery, roses and carnations of varying shades of lemon and yellow and a wreath was made to be used as a table arrangement! It was completed with a few imitation eggs on sticks and a small container of chocolate eggs. Next it was the turn of the members. Absolutely everything was provided and the ladies worked hard with a constant pleasurable buzz. Eventually 32 arrangements were made, all slightly reflecting the ability and personality of each member. Some had tall roses and tulips, some had cut their flowers shorter but every one was beautiful. Some were left to decorate St Andrew’s Church for Easter. The evening concluded as usual with refreshments. The May meeting was planned to welcome Lucy Griffin from Retford and the June meeting, to be held on 12th June in St Andrew’s Church will host Sue Hodgson who will demonstrate “Super Sleuths”. Come and join us, we are growing fast, and discover what the sleuths are!

Linda Clarke of Spotted Dog Flowers will demonstrate in July at the usual time of 7.30pm and the usual night, the second Monday of the month.

High Levels WI

The members of High Levels WI met on Wednesday 19th April, paid their annual subscriptions and were welcomed to the meeting. Following the usual rendering of Jerusalem and a small amount of business the entertainment began. Six members of a South Yorkshire Belly Dance Troupe performed some dances and then invited members to join in. They explained the routines, their involvement and the health benefits. Questions produced a lot of information about the ladies themselves, to whom and where they were asked to entertain. It was certainly an enjoyable and informative evening. In June, some members have chosen to have afternoon tea at Crowle Moors Railway. This follows the talk by Angus Townley on the History of Crowle moors. The evening meeting on June 21st will host a speaker who will talk about Mary’s Meals. This is a charity which aims to provide a daily meal for every child in its place of education. High Levels WI is a friendly group of ladies who meet at the Reindeer Inn, Sandtoft on the third Wednesday of each month. The meetings begin at 6.45pm. Do come and join us and/or look at our website www.highlevelswi.co.uk

Misterton Primary School enjoyed their day of celebrations with artwork and crown making as we found out about King Charles. Festivities officially start with a whole school and families gathering to sing God Save the King, and my goodness we sounded fabulous. Families joined us with picnics and every child got a commemorative mug from Misterton Parish Council. The Lions and Barry Cooper donated a tree for the school and our Year 3 children did a fine job of planting it. Thank you to our community for your gifts to keep and gifts of time, celebrating with us and making it a very special day.

Notts Lions award Book Prizes for Creative writing to Misterton pupils.

Barry Cooper , President of North Notts Lions recently attended Misterton Primary School to present book prizes to two year five pupils for producing excellent pieces of creative writing. Max Baron wrote a story about sport and what it was like to play in a European Cup final. Tyler Jones created an adventure story about being shipwrecked on an island with three lions.

School Governor, Tom Allen, had set the boys the task, which they fulfilled with great success. The Lions club had provided funding for the book prizes that had been chosen by the pupils themselves.

Haxey Primary School

had a fantastic afternoon celebrating the Coronation of King Charles on Friday 6th May. The whole school had a red, white and blue themed non uniform day, and some people really took the opportunity to cover themselves from head to toe in Union Jack flags - there were some fantastic outfits! Our whole school picnic unfortunately had to be held inside as it looked like rain, but then the weather transformed and the afternoon could not have been better for our games on the fieldit was hot and sunny and perfect for lots of traditional fun! We had parachute games , hoopla and pin the crown on the King competitions, alongside some more modern games such as pop pong and limbo. Some sports day classics came out, such as the beanbag bucket game and one of the great favourites was the tug of war - it got very competitive, as evidenced by the many muddy knees that could be seen in all classes at the end of the day... The hobby horse racing was also a great success, with extra points being awarded for the best neighing (we think Mrs Lewin won!). A fabulous afternoon came to a rather spectacular - and suddenend, with several huge claps of thunder and a monsoon-like downpour, but not before we had all had a thoroughly fantastic, fun filled time! Thank you to our fabulous lunchtime team for providing the picnic and looking after us all while we ate, and to the PTFA for our commemorative coronation medals. We hope everyone at home had a wonderful Coronation weekend too!

Join our Quirky Choir

Wednesdays weekly (term time), 6.30pm – 8.30pm at The Point, 16 South Parade, Doncaster, DN1 2DR

25 years after Quirky Choir was formed to help launch Doncaster’s arts centre, The Point, it is still going strong. This warm, welcoming group get together every week to sing and socialise, making new friends and exploring a very wide range of music. Led by experienced musician and choirleader, Janet Wood, the choir sings songs from all over the world - from South Africa to Hawaii, from rock and roll to Rhianna – as well as getting involved in projects where they write their own compositions or perform.

Quirky Choir is inviting new members to come along and have a go. There are no auditions to join, and participants can pay weekly on the night. Sessions take place at The Point – a fully accessible, friendly building on South Parade in central Doncaster. All adults are welcome to sing and join in, whatever age, gender or ability.

As well as the social aspect of taking part, there is much evidence to prove that singing is good for you – not only in terms of positive mental health and wellbeing, but also for your respiratory system e.g. ‘Singing has been shown to alleviate chronic respiratory conditions and cystic fibrosis.’ Singing completely absorbs you and forces you to forget about everything else, even if only for a short while – there is nothing better after a long day, or a busy week, than making music with people and switching off from anything else that might be causing stress or anxiety. Singing together also helps people feel more connected and less lonely.

Quirky Choir runs weekly in term time at The Point in Doncaster town centre. Sessions take place on Wednesdays from 6.30pm – 8.30pm and cost £4.50. No booking is required – just turn up.

CORONATION FAMILY PICNIC DRAWS THE CROWDS

In perfect weather, hundreds of residents made their way to the Old School Field on Sunday 7 May for a Coronation family picnic. The band, The Unthinkables, played songs people recognised, children enjoyed circus skills and football while grown-ups drank the bar dry, 38 people sat down to a posh picnic by Chalet Girl Catering, Hepy's Hog Roast also kept people fed and made a generous donation to the Parish Council's fund-raising, the Cancer Research tombola ran out of prizes and raised around £300 - a lovely way to celebrate the previous day's Coronation. Matt Hunt won first prize in the Parish Council's raffle, and Ella Swindin (pictured) won the best crown competition.

Many thanks to North Notts First Responders, who were on hand to deal with any incidents (there weren't any) - and to the Parish Council's Events Working Group (and helpers), who put the whole thing together.

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST

Hello. Some of you may have heard about our charity which is now in its 51st year. We raise money to buy cancer-related equipment for our local hospitals and we are all volunteers; there are no paid staff. We have been sending monthly write-ups to local magazines for several years now and we hope you will follow our progress in Haxey and Westwoodside. If you have a computer please look us up on: dcdt.co.uk to see what we have achieved over the years.

As mentioned in last month’s news, everything is progressing well with buying the Fibroscanner for the Hepatology Department at Doncaster Royal Infirmary. This will help in the fight against liver disease which, in some cases, may lead to cancer. Prevention is always best.

We are still looking for someone to help our Secretary. It is an interesting job and will only take a couple of hours a week on average. If you would like more information as to what is involved please telephone Ruth on 07510 963542 for an informal chat.

Would you like to receive our regular news updates by Email? We will shortly be starting an informal newsletter which will be sent to your inbox. If you would like to be included please send your name and Email address to: info@dcdt.co.uk. We look forward to hearing from you.

Our regular contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), first floor (lift available), Room 111. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. As the office is not fully manned it is best to Email or telephone in advance if you are thinking of coming to see us.

Reminder! Please let us know if you are planning to fundraise on our behalf so we can advertise your event on our website.

1st Isle of Axholme BP Scouts May 2023

In April we took our first scout camp of the year –we combined our usual indoor camp with the DofE Bronze practice expedition which made for a brilliantly busy weekend. On Saturday, the 2 teams of DofE participants walked unaccompanied across open country, navigating according to a planned routecard, to Brimham Rocks to meet up for lunch. Despite a soggy morning they made excellent time, showing great teamwork and map skills. After lunch, and the traditional hide and seek games among the rocks at Brimham, we dispersed to walk back to the hall. While the DofE-ers walked a longer route (including practicing how to leave safety tags for leaders), the “chef team” took a more direct route home. They then cooked a delicious meal of tortilla wraps with either spicy chicken or bolognaise fillings, followed by apple crumble and custard. Later, there was time for lots of silly games before supper and bed. On Sunday, after a team clean-up of the hall, we headed to a local outdoor activity centre for air rifle shooting and archery. Some impressive skills shown! After a quick picnic lunch we headed to Harrogate pool for their 2hr inflatables session – scouts race each other down either side of a floating obstacle course, trying to avoid sliding in. The car journey home was very quiet with many sleepy scouts!

Coronation celebrations have been enjoyed by the cubs who made crafts such as crowns ahead of the May 6th ceremony. We also visited Westwoodside Primary school and gave a talk in assembly to share some of our typical activities ahead of our Beavers section reopening.

Leaders have also been busy, keeping up to date with their dbs paperwork and other required qualifications to make sure the young people in their care are kept safe. Some have been updating their 16hr outdoor first aid (to re-validate their BELA walking qualifications), others spent a wilderness weekend in Northumberland completing 50km and wild camping, completing their Hill and Moorland assessment. Well done all, and thank you for giving up your time to run scouts.

Sections all meet at the Westwoodside Village Hall: (Cubs, Scouts and Senior Scouts) all meet on Monday evenings 6pm (Cubs), and 7pm (Scouts), and Beavers (tbc) probably on a Tuesday evening at 6pm.

Remember, we are still looking to recruit Beavers leaders so we can restart this section. Please get in touch if this is something you could help with.
