May was such a busy and wonderful month, all the Bank Holidays, The Royal Wedding and of course the weather was so gorgeous! Looking forward to June there is the Summer Fun afternoon at All Saints‘ Church Belton-Saturday June 18th. Please support your local event.

Owston Ferry WI will be meeting on Wednesday 15th June at 7.30pm in the Coronation Hall, Owston Ferry when Jackie Cheetham will be giving a talk entitled "Chats and Hats". Visitors are very welcome.

Owston Ferry will be open during the day and on Sundays refreshments will be served from 3pm until 4.30pm

The Smithy Museum and Heritage Centre at High Street, Owston Ferry, will be

open every Sunday from 2pm until 5pm during the Summer. Admission is £2.00 for adults and 50p for children.

After 6 months of preparation The Ashby Concert Band are ready to recruit more woodwind and brass players. Our traditional wide and varied

repertoire includes light classics, swing, historical marches with occasional musicals etc.

A programme for all tastes.

We require reeds from flute to bassoon, all brass from trumpet to euphonium, and basses and percussion also.

St Nicholas Church Haxey Parish Week-End 25th & 26th June The theme this year for this special week-end is "Lord of Heaven, Earth and Sea. On Saturday 25th June there will be various stalls including Cakes, Tom-bola. Books (adult & children) Plants & Vegetables to name but a few. There will also be a Raffle & Bouncy Castle and much more. Light refreshments will be served from 10.00 am followed by a Bar-B-Q at 12.30 pm.

Tickets for the Bar-B-Q which must be purchased in advance are Adults £5 Children £2.50. Items for display must be in Church by Friday evening 24th June. Children are invited to make a seaside picture or model.

WESTWOODSIDE Church of England SCHOOL Newsletter Near the end of the Spring Term we organised Easter competitions for the Whole School.

Children made an ‗Easter Bonnet‘ or a ‗Spring Garden‘ at home. Some children even made both! In total, there were over 140 entries, which was tremendous, especially as the standards of effort and imagination were very high.

Thank you to all the people who helped their children. The competitions culminated in a display of all the entries in the hall so that the children could appreciate each other‘s designs.

Thank you also to the PTA for providing prizes for the winners and consolation prizes for everyone who entered.

On the day before the Royal Wedding we celebrated with a ‗Royal Picnic‘ on our school field.

The entire school took part in a day to remember. Even though we were organising food for all the children at once, our pupils should be congratulated on their excellent behaviour which resulted in a suitably ‗civilised‘ event!

Thanks go to all who sent in contributions of food and all the volunteer helpers who laid out and served the wonderful buffet.

A special thank you must go to the small team of PTA helpers, led

by Mr Old, who volunteered to decorate the surroundings with bunting and balloons. Thank you also to Mr Coombs who provided prizes for the Foundation Stage competition of making a crown or hat at home.

AXHOLME SOUTH POLICE REPORT Village Hall, West St and Parklands, West Butterwick = Anti-Social Behaviour and Criminal Damage.

There have been incidents of criminal damage caused to motor vehicles in the PC Constable 1169 PC Constable 1839 West Street area of West Butterwick.

Sally Jameson Tina Starbuck Also reports of theft from the Parklands area, where a hot-tub was stolen from a garden. No specific times have been identified for these crimes; however information gathering are on-going. With the lighter evenings approaching reports of off road motor bikes are also beginning to be brought to the attention of Neighbourhood staff with bikes on the field at the hall, these incidents although sporadic at this time with no particular times of when it occurs, however police and staff will deal with any offenders and bikes will be seized.

The Neighbourhood team together with incident response staff are making regular patrols of the area and will deal with any offences and offenders committing crime. If anyone has any information regarding any of these matters please contact any member of the Neighbourhood team or if witnessing any incident please phone through for an incident log to be created on 0845 60 60 222.

Update: A cannabis warning has been given to a male after he was found in possession of the drug. Youths also had alcohol and a lighter confiscated by officers patrolling the area.

Travellers have also been sighted at the Hall, possibly after scrap. All suspicious activity should be reported on 0845 6060 222.

Recent Issues Local woman arrested = A female resident has been arrested for an assault. She was interviewed and was given a caution. Indecent Exposure = A male has been arrested in relation to an indecent assault in the area. He has been arrested and bailed pending further enquiries by the police.

Good News Story Wroot Village Hall Pc 1839 Tina STARBUCK and PCSO 7574 Sue FAHY attended the re-furbished Wroot Village Hall on Friday 15th April 2011 where the residents and other dignitaries were invited to see the wonderful work that has been completed. The hall is magnificent and a tribute to all the hard work and efforts by local people and I am sure will be welcome to the many who use its facilities. Our thanks to being invited.

Police Walkabout Surgery will be conducted from 5pm on Friday 20 th May 2011 starting in Westwoodside at the duckpond. The Neighbourhood Team are always looking at new ways to engage with the community and this has been quite successful. So please come along and discuss any issues you have within the community.

Haxey celebrate with their own Royal Wedding Street Party!

We had a very successful Royal Wedding Party financially, socially and spiritually.

It was a sell out .The hall was beautifully decorated with red ,white and blue everywhere, butting flags, flowers and hats.

Sue Bowman and Shirley Hinchcliffe judged the best wedding hat competition which was a very difficult choice with so many really beautiful hats on display.

The winner was Dorothy Dent second place Mavis Rowbottom, third place Margaret Gibbons The singing was magnificent with Shirley Hinchcliffe at the piano and was also master of ceremonies, finishing with Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory. What emotion was displayed.

The finale was a toast to the newly weds given by John Roberts followed by wedding cake made and donated by Ann Parkin.

Everyone and I mean everyone had a wonderful time and it will long remain in our memories.

Saturday June 4th in the Steven Jones Community Hall 10.30 am to 12 noon there will be our usual monthly Coffee Morning. Combined with it will be our annual Plant Sale which will be held outside the Hall if the weather is fine. All plants at very reasonable prices.

WINDMILLS OF THE EPWORTH AREA The empty shells of some of the derelict windmills bear witness of a time of numerous milling activities in the area. Most of the mills were tower mills made of brick. They seem to have been built around the beginning of the 19th century. On the rise between Epworth and Belton there are records of at least four mills, two of which can still be seen.

About fifty yards west of the former railway cutting was the site of an old wooden post mill. It was destroyed by fire in the early 19 th century. To the east of the cutting is the now beautifully renovated (by Barry Leggott) former Maw’s Mill. It was built in 1783 and paid for jointly by Richard Maw, Thomas Arday and Thomas Gervas. The total cost was three hundred and seventy six pounds twelve shillings and ten pence including 47,000 bricks. At the side of Belton Road was the former Brooks Mill, now a private residence. It was built between 1799 and 1801. The sails were removed after the Second World War. A diesel engine replaced them. It finally closed in 1953. On the right hand side of the road was a Smock mill. It was built by subscription by a group of people; hence it is called a Subscription Mill. Usually these Subscription Mills were built by a group of local farmers subscribing. This one was erected, so the story goes, by a group of people from the Hull area. In the Hull area the manner of their particular parish had charged them for the wind they used to power their mills, so they left and came to Epworth and each subscribed to build the mill. It was to be a non-profit making mill.

Built in 1805 a plaque bears the words: “Both rich and poor a friend will find who send us their corn here to grind”.

The mill closed down early in the 20th century.

Other mills in the Epworth area include Thompson’s mill behind Rectory Street, a mill site near the cemetery, a mill in Burnham, and Burnham Mill on the road (A161) between Haxey and Burnham. This latter mill was built in 1809 and is currently undergoing restoration. All four sails were removed between 1924 –7.

Epworth and District Flower Club News Approximately 25 members and friends welcomed Rosalind Walker, an Area Demonstrator from the East Riding. Ros entertained and educated with an evening entitled "Razzle Dazzle".

She used a variety of containers including a very large brandy goblet, a container made entirely of driftwood, a large silver thistle shaped container and Adult classes now available, please ring for details a tall, clear glass vessel into which was draped some Saturdays at attractive purple fabric.

To contrast with the black goblet Ros used white lilies, elegant honeysuckle and a beautiful rose named Avalanche. In further arrangements Ros used sea holly (eryngium) which she contrasted with beautiful deep oranges and added peacock feathers, several carefully selected colours of roses, chrysanthemums, carnations, gerbera, hostas, garden blossoms and aspidistra leaves. In her final arrangement, with a Victorian effect, she used white beam, large hosta leaves, liatris, dusky lilac chrysanthemums, limonium, deep purple double lisianthus and lilac anthurium of a colour no-one had seen before.

Throughout the evening we were entertained with comments on family, holidays, Royal Wedding anecdotes and gardens and educated with flower arranging tips and techniques.

At the end of the evening the raffle winners counted themselves as fortunate as they took away their prized possessions.

The next meeting of the flower club will be on Monday 6th, June at 7.30p.m. in the Stephen Jones Community Hall, Haxey when June Borrowdale from Carlton in Lindrick will entertain with an evening entitled "Buds, Blooms and Twigs".

Haxey C of E Primary School News Letter The spring term has been very busy and full of a wide range of events and celebrations.

World Book Day was celebrated and the following pupils received £5.00 book voucher for their inventive costumes, based on characters from books or nursery rhymes: Y6 Georgia Hunt; Y5 Robyn Burdett; Yr4. Nicole Dukes; Y3 Abby Smith; Y2 Holly Howard; Y1 Isaac Player and FS2 Daniel Chafer.

Eight KS2 pupils Took part in the South Axholme Able Pupil Projects, which involved a variety of problem solving activities based on Medieval History.

We entered forty pupils from Y3 to Y6 in the South Axholme Cross Country Event and we were the overall winners. Well done to all who took part.

The school’s Easter Service was held in St. Nicholas Church and each class made a contribution, which involved a portrayal of Easter, including the telling of the Easter story, the symbols and traditions of Easter and how Easter is celebrated. The Service was well attended by family and friends, and a great atmosphere was created as we remembered and enjoyed the most important event in the Christian Calendar.

The decorated eggs produced by the children showed creative imagination and flair, and portrayed various familiar characters or representations of Easter and springtime. Mr A. Franks (Foundation Governor) and Mrs J. Godley (Community Governor) had the difficult task of carrying out the judging, and after a lot of thought and tough decision-making chose the following winners from each year group who were presented with an Easter egg at the end of the Easter Service.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Summer Walks We are having a number of events through the summer months and the first one will be a visit to Whisby Nature Park near Lincoln on Sunday June 5th. Whisby is a large area of woods, open water and grassy areas with many good, flat paths for easy walking. Because of the variety of habitats there are many different things to see, from birds to orchids. There is a large visitor‘s centre with a café and toilets but the car park is a pay and display (£1). We will be meeting at 10am in the car park for a morning walk around the area. Anyone who wishes to car share, have a lift or need more information on how to get there, please contact Geoff (see below) or any committee member.

Looking ahead, we will be having a walk round Scotton Common on Thursday evening, July 14 th, meeting at the reserve at 7pm. Scotton Common is between Scunthorpe and Gainsborough.

Carrside Changing Room facilities have been very badly vandalised, the refurbishment project will cost the users around £8000 Carrside Playing Fields ; Epworth Town Men's team oversee the usage at the field and Ady Flint coordinates the users. The field is used by Epworth town, the mowbary, AFC United and all of the Epworth Town Colts youth teams.

Since recent articles have been published, we have had contact from a security firm in Westwoodside. Andy Gillis (U11 Coach) is very involved in the refurbishment project. Andy has received other offers of help from local firms as well!

Also, Skip O'Hara (U13 coach) is organising a large event in Doncaster‘s Sportsman's Dinner, and all proceeds will go to the refurbishment project.

TRENTSIDE CONFEDERATION SCHOOL NEWS (ST MARTIN’S AND WEST BUTTERWICK C OF E PRIMARY SCHOOLS) One of the most enjoyable projects recently was the ‗Royal Wedding‘ that took place at St Martin‘s Church on Thursday 28 th April, with a beautifully decorated church, Best Man‘s Speech and a busy Reception held for all who attended, completed by the ‗cutting of the cake‘.

The Confederation ran Clay Workshops on Tuesday 26 th April with a local artist, Shaun Clark, and these were very popular. Shaun provided us with an historical overview of the history of the ocarina and the range of musical instruments that were used in the times of Henry VIII, including an early set of bagpipes! Historical costumes featured and all attendees made their own clay ocarina. It was a very enjoyable day. We are running another workshop in June based on the history of tile-making, patterns and techniques with cross curricular links to History.

An exciting project that is ‗in the pipeline‘ for both Schools‘ Juniors is ‗Money Matters‘ – our schools are going to be involved with this Barclays Bank initiative which will enable our children to learn about real-life money issues, thus building up financial skills and encouraging them to stay informed about financial matters In mid-June we will be working with the Diversity Service on a joint Years 5 & 6 Project linked to the celebration of Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month (third national celebration). At the moment we have plans to build a large shelter in the woodland at St Martin‘s with outdoor cooking activities and also to make ‗mini-shelters‘. We are incorporating these activities within a ‗Friendship Week‘ exploring stereotyping, inclusivity and antibullying. It should be a very worthwhile and thought-provoking week. . June is going to be a busy month!

Our links with both the local and international communities are very active at the moment. St Martin‘s School Council has been promoting the ‗Be a Responsible Dog Owner‘ message alongside the Parish Council, running a poster competition and handing out leaflets. Cllr Jan Williams has visited twice to discuss various initiatives with the School Councillors and there is to be a special Assembly in July with other members of the Parish Council. West Butterwick School Councillors have been developing their fund-raising ideas, selling cakes with plans afoot to use their profits to run an ice-cream stall in June/July.

Internationally, St Martin‘s school is developing a new partnership with a school in Ethiopia. West Butterwick is exploring forging links with schools in Nepal and Eastern Europe.

We now have our Residential Visit to Caythorpe Court to look forward to as well as attending the Church Schools‘ Festival at Lincoln Cathedral, not forgetting the traditional Sports Afternoons. Let‘s hope that this lovely warm and dry weather features for these events in particular!

Wroot Travis School News Letter We‘ve had a very exciting month with lots of holidays. First we had two weeks off for Easter then we came back for two days followed by a day for the Royal Wedding and then May Day.

Our chair of Governors Mrs Rachael Robinson gave up the role due to heavy work commitments. We were very sorry to see her go after many years of valuable support and hard work but understand what a busy lady she is and wish her well in the future. The children presented her with a gift and a bouquet of flowers.

Our Key Stage 1 and nursery children made a visit to the miniature railway at Thorne. They had a great time riding on the trains and had a live link up to a local radio station.

To take their transport topic to a logical conclusion the children built space rockets. They then had a lunar picnic with sandwiches filled with jam, chocolate spread, cheese spread chocolate moons and stars and cucumber, yes all in the same sandwich.

Our year 5 and 6 children are starting their road safety training soon and last week they bought their bikes to school to be inspected by the North Lincs Road Safety Officer. They were issued with a report and took their bikes home to have any minor adjustments done by Mum or Dad. We have had our Ofsted inspection this week and should have our results by the end of the month. We look forward to hearing how well we did.

To celebrate the end of SATs week the year 6 children said they would like a non uniform day. The staff thought that was a good idea and all of the children can come dressed as they wish.

David Neve visited Axholme Camera Club to act as Judge in the digitally projected competition 'Dereliction'. An unusual topic, many members were forced to go out and about to find suitable images for the subject. With imagination and enthusiasm, they trawled the countryside far and wide, with an amazing variety of possibilities being unearthed. Entries were sent to George Fiddler who organised the projection on competition night.

The judge, as eloquent as always in his interpretation of the images, awarded top marks of 20 to David Livsey for his 'Chimney Stack' and David Ulyett for 'Derelict Dropout' in the colour section, saying that both were very different, well observed and clearly showed dereliction although in totally different ways.

In the monochrome section, judge David was amazed to see Guy Myers' entry 'Abandoned X-Ray Machine' which achieved 20 marks, along with Keith Cawthorne's image of 'Garner's Barn' which also gained top marks.

St Martin’s celebrates the Royal Wedding in Style!

The children and staff from St Martin‘s C of E Primary School, Owston Ferry as well as the members of the village, celebrated the Royal Wedding in style on Thursday 28th April!

The ceremony took place at St Martin's Church, Owston Ferry. The vicar, Reverend Jeremy Green officiated at the wedding and explained the different parts of the wedding service to us all. Our music specialist teacher, Mr Jeff Blewett played the organ. Class Three pupils were the ‗choir‘ and sang Peace Perfect Peace to the congregation during the ceremony, with a solo performance from Brittany Wootton.

The bridesmaids, bride and bride‘s father were chauffeur driven to the church where they were greeted by the whole school dressed up in their finest clothes.

The church was beautifully decorated with fresh flower arrangements created by the children from Class Three with the help from Mrs Ducker and Mrs Temperton, two ladies from church.

The preparations for our special day started last January – an idea from Mrs Sellers and Miss Dance!

The children voted for their bride, groom, best man, bridesmaids, ushers, mother and fathers of the bride and groom, photographers and even waiters to hand around the wedding cake and refreshments!

Mrs Sandra Sellers and Mrs Jane Ayris bought and altered the bridesmaid dresses and wedding dresses. One of our Grandmas (we call her ‗Nanna Cakes‘) made the wedding cake.

The whole day was very memorable. Many parents commented and praised the school on the detail and overall organisation of the day.

The wedding party was invited back to school where a wedding breakfast was set up in the school hall. The school was adorned with union flags and happy smiling faces.

The master of ceremony announced the arrival of the ‗happy couple‘. The best man and father of the groom read their prepared speeches and all the guests raised their glasses to toast the happy couple!

It was an amazing event which will live in all our hearts and minds for a long long time!

Doncaster Advanced Motorist Road Basics Dear readers, The majority of car-related collisions occur near T-junctions, cross roads, side turnings, roundabouts, or forks in the road. 95 per cent of them are caused by driver error.

By using Advanced Driving techniques and knowledge, and by developing a systematic approach to you‘re driving you will massively reduce the likelihood of such an ‗accident‘ happening to you.

Lets consider the system used in Advanced Driving when approaching a junction.

Information. Use your mirrors and all-round vision to check the movements of other road uses. Then consider a signal before changing course.

Position. Check your mirrors. Carefully move the vehicle into the correct position for the junction.

Speed. Check your mirrors. Adjust your speed as necessary to prepare for the turn. Signal if necessary and brake progressively. The tighter arc of a left turn generally requires a slower speed than that of a right turn.

Gear. Once you‘re at the right speed, select the correct gear. Reconsider a signal before turning, and make a final mirror check.

Accelerate. As you complete the turn, accelerate smoothly to an appropriate speed, bearing in mind the driving conditions.

Remember



Brakes are for slowing, gears are for going; don‘t use the gears to slow you down.



Always drive in a way that allows you to change your plan if a signal is ignored.

 

Remember all junctions are hazards.
