Haxey Tennis Club has engaged the services of LTA Coach John Willis to assist the club in developing its coaching programme and membership. The Haxey Tennis Club coaching programme is open to juniors and seniors of all levels. The club started the 10 week summer coaching programme on Tuesday 24th April at 5pm but anyone can join at any time. There are 3 sessions on Tuesday nights but it is planned to start a Saturday morning session if there is enough local interest. The cost for 10 sessions of tennis coaching is only £30 for club members and £45 all others and the cost is per session for those joining after the 25th. John is also prepared to do a number of free tennis sessions within local schools to help the club develop. Interested schools should contact John Willis direct on 07939148603 to arrange a visit.

Owston Ferry Smithy & Heritage Museum

Haxey Womens Institute enjoyed an evening when Speaker Mrs. Sue Clifton illustrated with slides her subject entitled "Stitching up the family." She produced a 3 banner wall hanging depicting her family going back many generations, showing their work and illustrating memories of her childhood and those which had prompted her to produce this beautiful work all stitched by hand.This had taken 9 years to complete.What a wonderful piece of archives for the family considering she had never done any work like this before.

Final arrangements were made for the Jubilee celebrations which will be held at our next months meeting. Sandra Bishop "occasions" will be providing the food. Members are asked to bring Royal memorabilia A meeting is to be held at Westwoodside Village Hall when members will discuss and display material for the archives.Refreshments available.

Several members will be helping host the parish parties organised for the Parish in June.

Parish Plan Action Group News At the Parish Council Meeting in March, it was accepted that the Parish Council should take over the responsibilities of the Action Group. Good progress has been made on many of the actions, with over half of the original 54 actions completed. North Lincolnshire Council’s Sports Development Team is currently establishing a programme of Nordic walks that will start from various locations across

North Lincolnshire. All of which will be led by fully qualified Nordic Walking leaders.

So what is Nordic Walking?

Nordic Walking is the fastest growing fitness activity in the world and is used by individuals, personal trainers, health clubs, physiotherapists, doctors and health promoters because it is highly effective, affordable and FUN! Nordic Walking is an enhancement of ordinary walking only twice as effective! It uses poles to in order to add two major benefits to walking The use of poles means the upper body muscles are used as well as the legs The poles help to propel the walker along – this means he/she works harder than usual yet the support given by the poles makes it feel easier!

It is a specific fitness technique and is not to be confused with trekking or hill walking as the poles are not planted in front of the walker but in a specific way that increases the use of the upper body.

Nordic Walking is quite unique in that it provides benefits for everybody from those with medical problems to the super fit. Whatever your goal, whether it be becoming more active and improving fitness levels, weight loss or overcoming a medical condition, or simply meeting people and having fun then Nordic Walking may be for you.

Reports include theft, burglary non-dwelling and suspicious person(s) including some with dogs, criminal damage and off road bikes.

With the lighter evenings upon us we must all be vigilant to prevent any opportunity for those intent on committing crime. Simple things like is your front gate open? Is it broken? What are the locks like on your property are they better/worse than your neighbours? No burglar is going to make more work for themselves. Have you signs saying ‘beware of the dog’ these can indicate you do not have an alarm also other signs indicating pets reside often indicate no security inside, also that there may be doors or other means of entry used by pets which a burglar can facilitate. Once inside they will make preparations to avoid being caught in case the occupier returns. Also what have you written on your calendar – does it show how long you are away on holiday? At the dentist till when? Etc… Humans are creatures of habit and keys, handbags mobile phones, l-pads, laptops are usually kept near the door, all quick and easy for the thief to take. Have you listed property that is precious to you including keys, take photos or video footage of each room, but do not leave the footage on a computer or camera.

There are many web sites that you can look at for crime prevention and take an interest in preventing you and your property from becoming a victim. A new nationwide single on-line property search system for the UK Law Enforcement agencies is the NMPR which you can view on the web and read fully on how you can access and register your property. For the first time it allows the police to search any identifiable item of property to view its registered owners details, if it’s been reported stolen to the system by the police anywhere in the UK, by the owner, insurance company or in the case of a mobile phone, a network. Further information regarding this system will be advertised in the near future.

Wroot crime prevention. The village of Wroot experienced earlier in the year a rapid rise in crime and working together have created their own Neighbourhood watch which the villagers are all actively involved in and have made massive differences to the security of the village. Further engagement and work is on-going.

A meeting was held on Thursday 19th April at the Village Hall -------a discussion led by Ken Bates (Neighbourhood Watch) regarding prioritising issues of concern to the villagers. Well attended meeting with commitment from both the villagers and partnerships involved to progress with their concerns.

Once registered, in the event of loss or theft you can flag the item which will then show on the NMPR. You can register as many items as you wish on immobilise and it’s FREE of charge. If you have any of them stolen ensure you flag them on your immobilise account so the UK Police can trace you, return the item and investigate any criminal activity.

SCAM LETTERS = In recent weeks several residents from this area have received letters purporting to be from the Hong Kong area stating that are entitled to money from a distant relative who has died and to make contact with the author of the letter . Please be advised that anybody receiving one of these letters should not make contact and please ensure this letter is forwarded to the Epworth Police Station for our information. Epworth Police Station is open between 0900 – 1500 hours on Monday and Thursday each week.

A programme of events to mark the Queen's Jubilee celebrations will take place over the Jubilee weekend in Haxey Parish. One of the highlights of the weekend is a flypast by the Royal Air Force over the area to the South of St Nicholas Church during the afternoon of Saturday 2nd June when the Church will be the focus of activities including displays, competitions, refreshments and a lunchtime BBQ (by ticket only). The main planned aircraft participation is a flypast of a Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at about 3:30pm; however, information has been received recently that there is a high likelihood of a further flypast by 2 Royal Air Force Hawk jets at around 2:30pm. Both low-level flypasts are planned to take place transiting west to east from over the Westwoodside Water Tower to over the grassed area to the South of St Nicholas Church and departing to the east. There is also the possibility of more than one pass. The aircraft should be visible over most of Haxey Parish whilst they are entering and leaving the area and residents, particularly those with livestock/animals, should take any precautions they feel necessary considering the likelihood of increased and sudden noise events around the times of the fly-pasts.

I once read about a man visiting the Middle East, who saw an Arab boy walking down the street playing what looked like a very heavy flute. On closer inspection it turned out to have been made from an old rifle that the boy had found in a nearby battlefield.

Power can corrupt and be used to bring misery to many who are less powerful, as we have seen so often throughout history - and up to the present day. But power and influence need not be bad in themselves, it just depends on how they are used – like the Arab boy turning an instrument of death into a musical instrument to give pleasure to others.

Most of us have little power or influence over others, because we’re not captains of industry or politicians, and we’ll never have the opportunities afforded to her Majesty the Queen, whose Diamond Jubilee we are celebrating. And yet, that is no reason for not using what influence we do have to make our society a better place.

Jesus said: ‘Whoever wants to be great must be the servant of the rest of you.’ That puts the appetite for power firmly where it belongs. Power needs to be used to help and serve others. We all have some influence through the people we are, the things we do for others, the way we spend our money, and through the values we adopt and encourage others to share.

WESTWOODSIDE Church of England SCHOOL

At our School we emphasise learning through exciting, memorable and practical experiences.

In our Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception), on Tuesday 08 May, the children enjoyed a visit to McCallum’s Farm Shop where they saw a variety of fruit growing. They looked around the café and shop where they experienced buying produce. The visit supported their learning related to the theme of farms.

In F2 (Reception), and throughout the School, children have been learning about a variety of strengths including the strength of teamwork. By working together children can achieve more and learn from each other.

In Mrs Judge’s Year 2 class, children have enjoyed helping to look after the plants in our greenhouse. As part of their Science topic about Looking After Plants and their RE theme of The Living World, the children have planted and are looking after a variety of different seeds.

On Thursday 31 May we are planning our Jubilee Day. We will find out the winners of our Jubilee decorating competitions: - F1 decorating a flag, F2 a teddy bear and Years 1 – 6 a torch, kindly donated by the Parish Council. Each child will receive a Jubilee mug also provided by the Parish Council.

Mrs Chard, our Cook, has offered to provide traditionally British fish and chips, followed by jelly and ice cream for children who have a school dinner.

During the afternoon we will enjoy a Jubilee picnic, hopefully on the School field. The children will be able to dress up in patriotic red, white and blue for the day instead of our usual uniform.

The event organised by South Axholme Academy and the Isle Academy was a great success with nearly 100 pupils competing for their schools. Eliott Bell came first in the boys’ breaststroke and Erin Clarke first in the girls’ breaststroke. In the boys’ Front Crawl Ethan Smith secured 2nd place. Aoife Chambers-Hay came 2nd and Nicole Duke 3rd in the Girls’ Front Crawl. It was a Haxey 1,2 in the Boys’ Freestyle with Matthew Baldwin finishing in 1st place and Jonathan Graham 2nd. In the Girls’ freestyle Erin Clarke finished in 1 st place and Amy Jackson 4th. Haxey finished the Gala in style achieving first place in 3 out of the 4 team relays. Haxey will now be South Axholme Academy’s representative in the next round at the Pods on the 14th of June. Well done and good luck!

Jubilee Activities As part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the Parish Council are providing all our pupils with a ‘torch’ and asking them to design an appropriate holder for using the torch to light the way to the village beacon on 04:06:12 at the Haxey Hood field. The pupil who has made the torch holder, judged to be the best in each class, will be awarded a £5 voucher by the Parish Council.

On the 1stJune there is a Diamond Jubilee Service at St Nicholas Church followed by a parade back to school. Once at school there will be a day of activities and games with a picnic lunch. All pupils are to be presented with a Diamond Jubilee mug from the Parish Council.

Wroot Travis School News Thank you to all the people that recently donated to our Bags 2 School collection we have just heard that the collection raised ÂŁ359.50 for school funds, this will be used to buy new equipment for the children or to provide coach hire for school trips this summer.

Our next collection will be on Thursday 8 th November.

We have lots of exciting things planned for this summer. On Friday 25th May we are going to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. We’ve just heard they have had a new baby camel born and we are looking forward to seeing it. Lots of pictures here next time.

Our Foundation Stage children have been focusing on space and the planets. They made some very interesting aliens then made sandwiches and cakes and had a picnic on the moon.

Master Wilks from EW MMA comes to school to teach the children martial arts each week.

This is very popular and many of the children take lessons out of school as well. The children recently went through a regrading. The reception children received yellow belts the older children achieved their orange belts. Katie Gaffney is a green belt and Oliver Turner is now a brown belt.

Amateur Dramatics The Epworth Mowbray Players No.1

The Imperial Hall in Epworth’s Chapel Street, has over its lifetime seen many social events.

None more popular it seems, than a period between 1948 & 1965 when Epworth locals where producing plays there under a new umbrella organisation and affiliated to; The National Operatic and Dramatic Association 1948 Before the war at Epworth amateur dramatics were running fairly successfully, there was the ‘Epworth Amateur Dramatic Society’ and another called the ‘No-Name Players’.

Following the Second World War, the country was under the governments rationing scheme, it was an austere time and the community in Epworth were looking to liven up their social lives once more.

Television although invented, was only available to the select few; probably no one in Epworth owned a set then. There was a very strong community feeling in most towns and villages and Epworth was among them, you could still leave doors unlocked without fear of unwanted intrusion.

Shops were situated all over the place, supermarkets were unheard of and people shopped daily for their needs so people got to know each other much quickly than today.

In 1948, a group of locals decided to resurrect a dramatic society and the word went out for people to join, many without any acting experience applied. It has to be said a lot were teachers, some were professionals, others not, it was a grand old mix that came together. So with zest, zeal and great enthusiasm, The Epworth Mowbray Players were formed.

In December 1948 under the direction of Miss Gertrude Lees I.R.A.M their first production was “They Came to a City.”

The first cast members were; Freda Matthews-Margaret Hutchingson-David L. Walster-Ella DempsterMorris Butler-Dora Maxfield-Ian Shillito-Mary Housham & Jack Johnson.

Owston Ferry Jubilee Committee A Jubilee committee has been formed in Owston Ferry to mark not only the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen, but also to celebrate 100 years of the Owston Ferry Coronation Hall.

Councillor John Lee, Chair of the Owston Ferry Parish Council said:“the Parish Council is delighted to be able to support this venture, which will not only celebrate the Diamond Jubilee, but also celebrate one hundred years of an important community facility – the Coronation Hall” Celebrations will take place over the four days from the 2 nd to the 5th June 2012.

My name is Natalie Cooper. I am a first year Biology student at the University of Nottingham who has lived in the Isle of Axholme all my life. Our house is actually built on the site of my Grandfather Cooper’s butcher shop in Westwoodside.

This summer I am raising money on behalf of the Meningitis Trust by taking part in a challenging 9day trek through the Andes in Peru, ending up at Macchu Picchu (the "Lost City of the Inca's"). This trek is organised by Really Wild Challenges and will commence on the 30th August 2012.

I got involved in this great opportunity through Nottingham University Karnival – Europe’s biggest student run charity organisation who raised over £1.4 million for charity last year and for whom I am a representative for in my first year halls.

My fundraising target for the trek is £2,850 – although I would like to reach £3,000 if possible.

Meningitis Trust is a fantastic charity who gives help and support to individuals and families affected

by Meningitis. It is a charity close to my heart as my cousin had the illness when she was a child and because I know someone who has beaten the disease, I want to help the Trust raise money to help those who still have it. In addition to taking part in this trek I raised over £600 for Meningitis Trust earlier this year by taking part in a skydive – an experience I shall never forget!

HAXEY AND WESTWOODSIDE HERITAGE SOCIETY MEMBERS MEETING - 10TH. MAY 2012.

Speaker for the evening at the May meeting of the Haxey & Westwoodside Heritage Society was Mr. Henry Garner, better known as Cory, and assisted by Micky.

Cory began his talk ‘World War Two’ rationing with a snapshot display of typically rationed items Sugar 8 ounces, Tea 2 ounces, Bacon 4 ounces, Butter 2 ounces, Cheese 1 ounce Cooking Fat 8 ounces all per person per week and Meat on so many pennies worth.

Eight ounces of sugar seems high but since baking was then a common and regular home activity a necessary item.

Cory explained how items were allocated on need and not the ability to pay! Ration books to record sales of the staple items, a points system (16 per adult per month ) for such items as tinned Spam, Condensed Milk, Fish etc.

Clothing and Household items were also controlled by the points system with an annual allocation, Blackout material was off ration and other items such as Liver, Kidney & Sausage, if you could obtain them were also unrationed.

Exceptions to the above existed, heavy industrial workers and miners had extra soap, newly weds had special permits to set up home and pregnancy justified extra allowances by means of a Green ration book the milkman often being the first to know which of his customers were pregnant.

Consequences of rationing led to a host of activities and developments, a national program of ‘Dig for Victory’ led to country wide development of allotments, Works canteens grew from 1500 pre-war to over 80,000 by the end of the war and shortages of everything meant queuing and ‘under the counter’ dealing whilst food wastage was considered a crime.

Substitutes for many common items were used and flavouring essences developed to replace the natural flavours.

Surprisingly rationing continued for more years after the war than for the years during the war, only ending in 1954, Bread was never rationed but towards the end of the war flour was, to ensure adequate supplies reached the starving citizens of liberated countries.

Cory completed his presentation with many personal anecdotes from the audience whose memories had been renewed by his talk.

Mrs Norma Neill gave the vote of thanks for a most interesting talk.

Chairman Mrs. Jackie Starr had opened the meeting by reminding members of the Parish Jubilee committee’s fund raising afternoon tea to be held on the following Saturday when visitors could enjoy tea and scone, a raffle of donated items and home made cakes on sale.

Further information on the Parish Jubilee celebrations, with particular reference to the Spitfire fly-past, had also been given.

Mrs. Betty Roberts won the free draw of £5, following which the meeting closed with refreshments served.

The next meeting of the Society will be on Thursday 14th. June when members will celebrate the Diamond Jubilee with an indoor 50s style street party.

TRENTSIDE FEDERATION – St Martin’s and West Butterwick Church of England Primary Schools – School News As the Summer Term has progressed since returning from the Easter break, both schools have become increasingly focused on the forthcoming Diamond Jubilee. Therefore, our curriculum studies have included thinking about ’60 years of our Queen’s reign’. Pupils in Years 3 and 4 at St Martin’s have already produced some stunning and highly informative timelines. These were created as part of a home-school learning project. Harry Watts and Ellis Clayforth produced particularly impressive timelines featuring local historical milestones as well as national and global events, such as King George opening Keadby Bridge in 1916, the Humber Bridge opening in 1981, George Laming’s Smithy being built in Owston Ferry in 1859, the first light bulb being invented in 1878 and Lego being patented in 1958 – a really interesting and diverse collection of momentous occasions! We all learnt a lot from this project! In addition to this, pupils are now working on designing their own commemorative coins and stamps linked to the art curriculum as well as learning the National Anthem. We are also looking forward to a visit from the Chairman of West Butterwick’s Parish Council Cllr Derek Hurst, accompanied by Cllr Jackie Shadlock who will generously present all pupils with a commemorative Jubilee coin. Mr Hurst and Miss Shadlock will then give a talk to our own School Council on the role and responsibilities of Parish Councillors.

Thinking ahead to July, we are rapidly heading towards the Olympics – London 2012. Both schools are involved in an unusual project linked to The Olympics – a Christian based theatre group are visiting us in July to present ‘Who Comes First?’ – a learning experience that promotes the Olympic and Paralympic Values of respect, excellence, friendship, courage, determination, inspiration and equality. The children will be considering these through story-telling, drama and music, leading on to them reflecting on an athlete’s sense of purpose and how all of this relates to opportunities and challenges that they may face in their own lives in the future.

In amongst all of this, the theme for our creative curriculum this term is Olympic Robots and West Butterwick has already been invaded by an alien tripod fighting machine! This tripod stands 3 metres high and has been designed and built by the Junior pupils in Mr Cross’ class. Years 3,4,5 & 6 at West Butterwick are studying H G Wells’ science-fiction novel ‘War of the Worlds’. This has really captured the pupils’ imaginations and they have not only produced this ambitious large scale model, but have their own ‘prototypes’ on a much smaller scale. The educational aims of this were assembling, joining and combining a range of materials as well as using finishing techniques to strengthen and improve the appearance of their product. We are looking forward to parents and carers meeting our ‘Martian invader’ next week, when we invite them in for an ICT Information Session. A small group of Key Stage 2 pupils will be demonstrating the new programmable equipment recently purchased. We are looking forward to ‘livening up the learning’ with these exciting resources!

Doncaster Advanced Motorist Motorway Technique Dear readers, Joining a motorway.

Look well ahead and plan your approach early. Use your off-side wing mirror to help match your speed to that of the traffic in the left-hand lane of the motorway when you join from a slip road.

Select the lane that allows you to merge most smoothly. Usually the right hand lane on the slip road as you will be able to see traffic on the motorway earlier and the traffic on the motorway will be able to see you on the slip road earlier.

Where necessary give a right indicator signal. Do it in time to allow for a reaction from other drivers on the main carriageway who may pull over into the adjacent lane, giving you the chance to merge smoothly. Plan your acceleration on the slip road, so that you don’t have to brake or accelerate further to join to traffic flow.

Constantly use your mirrors to check the main carriageway and other traffic around you and never commit to changing carrageways without considering a brief glance over your right shoulder.

Difficult approaches.

When the motorway slip road rises up to join the main carriageway, your vision and anticipation maybe limited so you have less time to judge the traffic flow before merging. To minimise this problem, avoid racing other vehicles up the slip road and stay back from the vehicle in front.

Always use the two-second rule when following another vehicle.

On short slip roads you may have to be very decisive. That may mean you need to accelerate very firmly to achieve a safe merging speed in time.

Some slip roads have cross-hatchings to separate the lanes of traffic. Those with solid white surrounds can only be entered in an emergency.

Leaving the motorway.

Motorway junction signposts are usually positioned one mile and half mile in advance. Use them to plan your speed and to select a suitable lane position early.

Junction countdown signs appear 300, 200 and 100 yards before each exit.

Judge your exit speed carefully especially after driving for long periods at high speeds. Lift your vision up to look further ahead and never be caught out by a short or sharply curving exit slip road. Use your mirrors as you leave the motorway, especially if you plan to take the right-hand lane on a multi-lane exit slip road.

On a busy carriageway, it’s always worth taking a quick glance over your right shoulder to check for any drivers trying to cut across from the faster lanes of the motorway to exit in one hazardous manoeuvre. This tactic is likely to be carried out at a dangerously high speed.
