Welcome to the July issue of Haxey&Westwoodside Arrow

This month we can see a few more articles coming through! This is great news but we still need all those events advertising so the local community can get involved!

If there are any lego fanatics out there, there is a great exhibition at The Point in Doncaster throughout the Summer. Full details are on page 22.

The deadline for the August issue is a little early and is Wednesday 5th July for delivery by the 1st August.

Enjoy the read.

FOUR MISTERTON WOMEN OUT TO BEAT DEMENTIA

Four women form Misterton are tackling a 26-mile hike across the North York Moors in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society. Nikki Jaggard-Smith, Gill Smith, Emma Goodall, and Nicky Taylor have laced up their walking boots for their training programme –completing a 17-mile walk at the end of May in preparation for the sponsored walk on Saturday 22 July. Pictured are Gill (left) and Nikki on a recent training walk.

Nikki says: “My Mum was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in Autumn 2021 and it has had a major effect on her life and Dad’s. We lose more and more of her as the weeks pass by, and caring for her becomes increasingly difficult.

Raising funds for Alzheimer’s Society means less families of the future will have to go through the same.” Together, the team have so far raised over £1800 in sponsorship.

Church School Fes val

On Thursday 25th May 2023 the Year 6 pupils were invited to a church service. The Trentside Federa on (Haxey, West Bu erwick and St Mar n’s) went as well so the Cathedral was quite busy – especially because it was open to the public. The Cathedral was spectacular, furthermore it was rich in interes ng architecture and history.

We went into the Cathedral and looked at the stained‐ glass windows – the Bishop’s Eye was my favorite one. Did you know that it was smashed into thousands of pieces and they had to put it back together? We looked around and saw the original five arches, dole windows, a Bap smal font and even the kings carved in stone with the sculptor’s dog hidden behind one of them! Dole windows were windows that the church would have given food out of to poor people on pilgrimages and even beer but the beer isn’t what it is today. A er that, we were sent to the choral workshop, sung songs and we sounded like an actual choir! The halls were full of Year 6 school children, as a result it was very loud and busy. Then we drew out our own stained ‐glass windows and it was really fun. A er that, we finished all the ac vi es we went to the Educa on Centre and we had to find and fill in facts!

To end our day, we had a final church service: singing the songs we sung in choir and praying therefore we had to be quiet and we had to rise and be seated a lot, but it was s ll very fun and enjoyable. I think that the children next year should definitely go and they would have fun, my personal favorite part was looking at the stained‐glass windows.

Lound and their friends and families. It was held on Sunday 7 May and we called it 'Party in the Paddock'.

We had a raffle, the first prize was a Commemorative Blanket crocheted by Marie Marsden. In addition, we raffled a hamper and lots of vouchers donated by local businesses. We enjoyed the beer tent, plant stall, gin station, cake and dessert stall and a bottle tombola.

Ninety-two people were entertained in the sunshine by local band The Sway, and we raised over £500 for our Christmas Lights Fund.

Thankyou to businesses for supporting us :

International LEGO® Brick Art comes to Doncaster

See Brick by Brick at The Point and Danum Gallery, Library and Museum this Summer

1 July – 2 September 2023 FREE

This summer, The Point and Danum Gallery, Library and Museum are collaborating to bring the International LEGO® brick art exhibition ‘Brick by Brick’ to Doncaster. Both city centre venues will be displaying different artworks by 18 artists, designers and photographers from around the world who use LEGO® bricks as their medium or inspiration. Taking this simple plastic construction block as their starting point, these artists have created stunning, thought provoking and often humorous artworks which will appeal to art enthusiasts and LEGO® fans alike.

Alongside the wide range of artworks on display, visitors to The Point and Danum Gallery, Library and Museum will also be able to try their hand at creating their own construction brick artworks with a LEGO® graffiti wall, build tables and a selection of games and competitions.

A special day of LEGO® themed family events will take place on Saturday 8 July from 11am – 2pm at The Point and 11am - 3pm at Danum Gallery, Library and Museum. Make sure to visit both venues to take part in everything that’s happening.

Internationally renowned artist Michael Brennand-Wood has created four stunning artworks especially for this exhibition. Using a range of colours, shapes and sizes of bricks, Michael has created a series of abstract montages which have a mesmerising appeal to them.

‘Eat My Bricks’ is a collaboration between German artists Michael Feindura and Soeren Grochau who use LEGO® mini-figures to create large scale, humorous photographs, often with social and political commentary at their heart.

Brazilian photographer Valentino Fialdini has created photographs which show a set of empty rooms and corridors. Using specialist photography and lighting techniques, Fialdini tricks the viewer’s eye in to thinking that these miniature LEGO® rooms are life-sized.

Collectively known as The Little Artists, John Cake and Darren Neave collaborated to replicate a series of well-known contemporary artworks and personalities using LEGO® bricks. Look out for Damien Hirst, Rachel Whiteread and Jake and Dinos Chapman.

Toronto based artist Ekow Nimako began using LEGO® bricks in his professional practice in 2014 and has since cultivated a unique approach to sculpting this iconic medium. Comprised of black bricks only, Nimako will be exhibiting four captivating artworks that reference mythology, West African proverbs and afrofuturism.

Participating artists are: Agabag, AME 72, Cole Blaq, Michael Brennand-Wood, Janet Curley Cannon, Eat My Bricks, Valentino Fialdini, Jason Freeny, Hannah Gibson, David Hughes, The Little Artists, Little Big Art, Ekow Nimako, James Paterson, Jonathan Rolph. Samsofy, David Turner and Zino.

Brick by Brick is a 20-21 Visual Arts Centre Touring Exhibition. Entrance is free. See it on display at The Point and Danum Gallery, Library and Museum from 1 July – 2 September 2023.
