Welcome to the July issue of the Arrow.

This months Arrow is crammed full of great information. The Arrow is full of great articles, photos and local events as well as our local advertisers.

As usual we have lots of lovely news from our local schools giving us an insight into what the children in the villages have been up to. A huge well done to all the children who have now finished their GCSE’s and A levels, wishing the very best of luck with their chosen future.

Rescue Day 2016 is returning to 7 Lakes Country Park on the 9th July. A great local event which now attracts thousands from all over the UK . Still only ÂŁ10 and all monies raised are contributed to local charities.

Summer is not summer without a festival or two! Whether its your local festival in the Isle or Glastonbury there is something for everyone. What ever you choose to do this Summer ensure you are safe and enjoy the holidays.

Update = The Local Neighbourhood Team are attending the locations daily and monitoring the location and welfare of the animals.

Non Dwelling Burglaries.

Update = There have been a number of incidents reported where outbuildings and farm buildings have been entered resulting in some high value equipment being taken. We recently received a call regarding suspicious persons in the East Lound area. Please be vigilant in all of the villages and report anything you deem to be suspicious on 101 at the time it is seen. The Local Community Team continue to patrol the area and will deal with any persons or vehicles encountered.

Parking in Haxey/Westwoodside.

Update = We have not had any complaints regarding the matter recently but the parking issues in the area are continually monitored by the Local Community Team.

Information During the last few months difficulties have been experienced by the general public regarding access to the Humberside Police Website with regards to viewing the local priorities for the area and any meetings held. We normally meet weekly in St Nicholas Church Hall, Haxey starting at 7.30 pm to approximately 9.30 pm. We are a very friendly club and welcome any newcomers. The annual subscription is £10.00 plus £2.00 for each meeting attended (reduced for under 18s) which includes tea/coffee and biscuits.

Old Rectory Garden Party A garden party will be taking place at Epworth’s Old Rectory, in aid of the Isle Choral Society.

It will be taking place on Saturday, July 2, from 2.00pm until 4.00pm and admission is free.

The concert will be an outdoor event, on the main lawn outside the Old Rectory and indoor cover will be provided should the weather prove to be somewhat inclement.

Members of the public visiting the Old Rectory for a tour of the house are invited to mingle with the garden party.

There will be eight different musical performances ranging from the Gastric Band, South Axholme Academy Wind Band, The Hill House School Orchestra and the Lydian Choir.

Refreshments will be available and there will also be numerous plant and craft stalls on the day.

Epworth and District Flower Club Report May 9th 2016 At the end of the May evening’s meeting 17 happy ladies took home a floral reproduction of a royal crown. Each was a table decoration fit for afternoon tea with even a royal guest.

The evening’s workshop was entitled “Happy Birthday Ma’am” and members enjoyed watching, with amusement, as the demonstrator produced a large cup and saucer into which the arrangement was to be created. As she worked we were told of the Queen’s reported first cup of tea of the day.

Oasis was used to hold 3 cerise pompom carnations and then 5 pink roses were positioned in a line across the centre. Small sprigs of hebe, senecio and rosemary hid the mechanics and then small white spray chrysanthemums and pale pink carnations filled in any remaining spaces. That in itself was a pretty posy but then our demonstrator created a bow from a tall leaf of cordyline and went on to thread pearls (often worn by Her Majesty) onto medalino sticks. Four groups of three sticks were looped and with careful positioning the effect of a crown was created to some surprise. Silver trimming was a further addition and a buttonhole added to lay with the teaspoon completed the activity.

The evening’s demonstrator provided everything necessary for the ladies to create their own arrangements and a happy hubbub ensued as each made a personalised teacup coronet!

A plant stall raised approximately £20 to boost the club’s funds. A vote of thanks was given to the demonstrator and was followed by refreshments.

Community News The Isle of Axholme Physically Handicapped Society will be holding their Annual Coffee Morning at the Coronation Hall, Owston

West Butterwick Field takes place this year on Saturday 20th August starting at 1.30pm on the Playing Field at Ulyett Lane. Attractions this year include Flo the Clown, Zorbs and Reptile Encounters.

There will be attractions for children including a bouncy castle, hook a duck and others.

There will be many stalls including tombola, children’s tombola, bottle stall, crafts, books and a Slush machine. There will also be refreshments, BBQ and a licensed bar. Children’s races will also be part of the programme. At the end of the event, there are goody bags for children still present. We hope you will join us at West Butterwick on 20th August for a free family day out. Everybody welcome.

The July meeting of West Butterwick and Distrct Gardening Club will take place on Monday 4th July at West Butterwick Village Hall at 7.30 pm. The speaker is Hilary Hutson. Her subject is ‘Patio Panache’.

Everyone is welcome – all ages and all levels of gardener Members £2, non members £3.

There is no meeting in August. The next meeting is 5th Sept with Dr Andrew Ward’s talk ‘ A Year of Garden Colour’.

Have a cold shower, and boy was it cold, it will have to get warmer before I have another. Have my sugar ration pinched.

Sunday Lovely day, best this year so far. Have a letter from you dear. Oh I wish that I could hear our little Julie sing, as you say she can now. Poor old Peggy is dead; she’s been a good dog. Attend service. Les is a Mutual Aid man now. One of the new buildings collapses, two civvies taken to hospital.

P.T. Sergeant gives us a talk on unharmed combat, says we may need the knowledge of it yet.

Better day but no water to wash. Next of kin parcels are coming in now; they were sent off in Sept and Oct, nearly six months coming.

A lovely day and what a lovely sunset, a real victory ‘V’, red glow in the sky. Band gives concert. Eclipse of the moon last night.

Sunday, Ities find the wire cut; a lot of excitement. Attend service at7.30, held under one of the lamps outside, a little cool. Some of the tents are taken down, and the men move into the new huts. Jerry Mason gives talk on boxing Feb. 22nd.

Trouble with Group Commander, they call him P.O. (Principal Officer) Edmonds. Knock out quiz. The band is to give more concerts, or get no more double rations. Lots of next-of- kin parcels in roll on mine.

Red Cross representative pays a visit, he sure has plenty to report, Sanitary is terrible, and some bad tents got taken down yesterday. So he did not see them. The water was also full on because he was here, but there was plenty to report if he wants.

Feb. 28th.

A chap has Malaria, tried to escape today in daylight. Of course it was hopeless, but the poor chaps out of his mind, it’s a wonder he didn’t get shot, he also had a go in the night, only his shirt on.

Feb. 29th.

Lovely day. The next compound gives us a concert. Stop having coffee in a morning now. A few fresh things have come into canteen. Braces in English money 10/- Fork 3/- Watches 400 lire coloured pencil 1/- Padre is ill no service Mar.2nd.

Have a good wash, the sun is getting some heat in it now, it’s also warming the bugs up.

Oh’ won’t I be glad to get out of this louse bound place, there is one creeping up my leg right now, shall have to knock off to hunt for it. Have a lovely letter from your mother dear, It’s grand to know I have such a lovely wife, mother, brothers, sisters and friends, who write.

We move into the huts, they are about 50 yards long, 8 yards wide, hold 100 men, much cleaner and healthier, they are damp, and don’t look to safe, no lights in yet.

Parcels, some oats in so will be having porridge for breakfast.

The residents of one street in Owston Ferry decided to celebrate the Queen’s 90th Birthday in style. Community champion Helen Topping led a group of friends and family in the set up and organisation of a traditional street party on St Martins Park in the village.

Months of planning with the local council, residents of St Martins Park and friends and families who wished to join the celebration certainly paid off, culminating in a hugely successful event. The street was closed to traffic and transformed in a matter of hours, with marquees, royal themed crafts, photo opportunities with a life sized Queen Elizabeth, bouncy castle, a make shift ‘Queen Vic’ refreshment area and live music courtesy of The Ancholme River Jazz Band. Residents also contributed a banquet of food, decorations and a 3 tier birthday cake. A spot of rain didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits, instead the party goers did an umbrella parade which coaxed the sun back out!

The party was enjoyed by all ages and was a great demonstration of community spirit and what can be achieved by fantastic teamwork! We think Her Majesty would be very proud.

A lovely day in the Rectory gardens Despite some misgivings about the weather, the plant and craft fair at Epworth Old Rectory on Saturday June 4th, went ahead under clearing skies, and warm sunshine. Traders started arriving by 8-20am and set up their stalls ready for the gates to be opened to the public at 10am. After a slow start the numbers picked up, along with the weather. A good day was had by all with the stall holders being served their tea and coffee by Robyn, one of our youngest volunteers, who then went on to join the musicians from Ep'th folk who serenaded us all day with a wide range of music. Even Shaun, one of the stall holders, deserted his pottery stall and joined in with the music on his mandolin, and a borrowed guitar. Colin, Pippa, Goff, Andrew and John were the other musicians all of whose services were given free of charge, and were greatly appreciated by everyone involved.

The day couldn't have gone as well as it did without the services of all the volunteers who gave up their afternoon or morning, and for some, their whole day, to help out with all the jobs needing to be done. To all of them, and you all know who you are, a big thank you from Gillian Crawley, the Curator of the Old Rectory. The volunteers who do various jobs, from guiding visitors, serving in the gift shop, catering, working with the collection, gardening, and just being pairs of hands whenever and wherever needed, are the backbone of the workforce without whom the Old Rectory would not be able to function. Being a volunteer at the rectory also introduces anyone joining into a social group which extends beyond the rectory walls too. Official Opening of Methodist Women in Britain Exhibition at Epworth Old Rectory On Thursday May 19th 86 invited guests attended the official opening of the exhibition about the importance and work of women in Methodism. The guests came from all over the UK and some from overseas as well. On arrival at the Old Rectory they were invited to partake of fruit punch and biscuits, and were met by De Mowbray's Musicke playing a selection of medieval instruments and songs.

Dr Jill Barber, vice president of conference cut the ribbon to officially open the exhibition which will run for the remainder of the season until the end of October. The collection is to remain housed at the Old Rectory after the exhibition is ended, which is a great addition to the already extensive collection of Wesley artefacts.

The Old Rectory is open for the rest of the season to the end of October, on it's normal summer opening hours, and the exhibition will be available to view by all visitors who come to the house

News from Haxey Church of England Primary School As we thunder towards the end of term, and end of the school year, we seem to be busier than ever!

OFSTED First of all we would like to share with the community that a er our recent Ofsted Inspec on we are GOOD! This is due to the great effort and hard work the senior leaders, teachers, staff and governors have undertaken since our last grade of 'requires improvement'. We would like to thank parents and carers of our wonderful pupils, and more importantly the children themselves, who work incredibly hard and connue to take care and pride in their work. The Ofsted inspectors were par cularly impressed with the children's behaviour which makes us very proud.

Residen al Trips Lots of our children have enjoyed field trips away, especially our Year 5 class who recently enjoyed an overnight stay at Austerfield Study Centre. The children enjoyed a variety of ac vi es, most of all staying there overnight! Most packed enough to stay for a week, however it was a most enjoyable and enriching trip to complement the children's educa on.

Year 6 will shortly be visi ng Kingswood, in South Yorkshire and we will hopefully have some pictures for the next issue.

PTfA The PTFA, as always, have been working hard with their latest events including Haxey's Got Talent, Father's Day pop up shop, and tex les collec on to raise funds for school. They shall also be holding our annual Summer Fayre at the end of the month, which seems to be the 'Jewel in our Crown' and is well a ended. The PTFA would like to thank parents, carers and pupils for their con nued support. The funds raised go back to enhance the learning experience of our children, which is immeasurable.

Happy Birthday your Majesty!

On Wednesday 8th June the children ditched their uniforms and donned clothing in colours of red, white and blue as part of the Queen's 90th birthday celebra ons. This was followed by a ernoon tea on the field and playing games all a ernoon. They made bun ng and crowns to wear, and more importantly had lots of fun. Thank you to staff, especially catering staff, for such an enjoyable celebra on.

PHASE UK PHASE are a locally based charity, providing much needed fund raising for those less fortunate than ourselves.

Children across all year groups recently completed a sponsored walk in aid of Nepal, who suffered a devasta ng earth quake a year ago, and are s ll suffering the a er effects. The children in FS2 completed a 'mini-walk', years 1 & 2 walked 3 miles, and our key stage 2 children were told they were walking 5 miles, but in reality they walked almost 8! The weather was kind to us, and we would like to congratulate all who par cipated, and all those who sponsored the children for this worthy cause. We are proud to announce that we have raised around £500! With thanks to Mr and Mrs Lindley (chair of governors), Mr J Smedley and Mrs Thorpe for organising the walk. As you can see from the pictures, everyone had a brilliant me.

Here at Wroot Travis Primary, we have been looking for ways to improve our school and personal fitness. We have come across a solution that we think will benefit the school for years to come. That solution is to purchase an outdoor gym, the school has already secured £6000 towards the gym, but we are still £4000 short. We will take turns in year groups to have the playtimes on the gym. Our outdoor gym will have: a Stepper, a Cross Rider Duo, a Body Twist, Cardio Boxes, a Skier all with a protective rubber chipping flooring to help prevent injuries.

As a school, we are hoping to raise additional funds and are planning on doing this by: a sponsored walk, a bottle tombola at Wroot Feast and the staff have planned to hold a fundraiser “The Strawberry and Fizz Event” which is £5 a ticket on the 16th of July.

We have also circulated a letter to local businesses asking for donations/funds.

The recent trips have been: Dinosaur Zoo (8th June) at the Baths Hall which we all went to, Church Schools Festival for Year 6 at Lincoln Cathedral (25th May), Swimming (weekly), Years 5 and 6 Study Parks sports reporting at Scunthorpe United FC (weekly) and a Shakespeare and Tudor Dance Workshop in school.

NEWS FROM MISTERTON MISTERTON GALA FEATURES NEW ATTRACTIONS A traditional brass band will be one of the main attractions at this year’s Misterton Gala. And, along with Ruby Stars Majorettes, who open the event, will be among a new line-up this year. The Gala is on Saturday 2 July from 12 noon to 5.00pm at Misterton Sports Social Club.

The programme of events (correct at the time of going to press) are: 12 noon Ruby Stars majorettes 12.30pm Worksop Miners Welfare Band 1.15pm Displays by pupils of Everett-Fox Schoo of Dance 1.45pm Worksop Miners Welfare Band 2.30pm Performance by pupils of Be’dazzled 3.00pm Football 5-a-side 3.30pm Dog show 4.15pm Parade of vehicles 4.30pm Draw of the Grand Raffle.

There’s an extended range of attractions for children with rides and inflatables, dozens of stalls, and a line-up of old and interesting vehicles.

Refreshments will be on sale; the bar will be open.

Entry is £2 for adults; accompanied children are free; unaccompanied children £1.

A lucky winner will take away the £100 first prize in the raffle; tickets are on sale this month (available from the organisers or at The Misterton Centre).

All the event’s profits go to local charities and good causes.

ANYONE FOR TENNIS? There are free open days with coaching and fun activities at Epworth Tennis Club on Sunday 3 July from 4.00-6.00pm. Racquets and balls are provided and anyone from six to 60 is invited: parents and adults are especially welcome. Anyone attending can have a 10% discount off the cost of club membership. This stunning boy is Nero, a 9 year old Malamute Cross Husky who is looking for a new home. Nero is a soft, gentle affectionate boy who has been fine with children, and is so well-behaved. Although ok with other dogs when he meets them, he needs to be the only dog in the home. No cats or small furries.

Typical of his breed, he does like to spend a lot of time outdoors, so a garden or an outdoor run are essential.
