Editors Letter....

Happy New Year to all our readers and lets hope its a good one! First of all I would like to welcome 1000 more readers to the Arrow distribution. I have had a few requests over the 3 years to bring the Arrow into Misterton.

Well here it is your first issue! I hope you find the magazine enjoyable to read with lots of local interest and if you want that local person whether it be a beautician, a builder, a plumber you will find their telephone no in your local mag. I am looking for clubs, charities to send me information so Misterton can become part of the magazine. Owston Ferry Methodist Chapel held their annual Christmas tree festival in the chapel on November 25th. The chapel was filled with trees donated by most of the chapels, churches and schools on the Isle of Axholme. A concert by The Intermezo group of ladies singers entertained for 2 hours with wonderful Christmas music. There was an outstanding solo performance form Gill who could be a winner anytime on the X Factor! All the proceeds were donated to the Scunthorpe branch of Action for the Children.

In April 2011 when Wroot Village Hall was officially opened following the extension and refurbishment it could not have been envisaged how successful it would become. Many events have taken place throughout the Summer and Autumn and a Produce Market which has taken place fortnightly on Saturday mornings has proved a huge success.

On Saturday 10th December Wroot held it‘s first Christmas Fayre since the village hall underwent the transformation, the turnout was excellent and the community spirit wonderful.

A Full English breakfast was provided with the offer of mince pies and home made soup also available.

Simultaneously outside the hall members of the community and Lions volunteers planted daffodil bulbs donated by the Lions for the Village Hall Gardens.

The Lighting Committee also held the 100 Club draw giving 2 members of the local community an early Christmas present. The Village Hall Entertainment Committee worked tirelessly to ensure that all had a good time and were well fed.

The next event to take place in the hall will be the Pantomime Robin Hood with Babes in the Wood.

It will run for 4 nights from Wednesday 11th January to Saturday 14th January. Tickets are now on sale at £6 for adults and £3 for children. They are available from The Shop, The Cross Keys or by ringing 01302 771480 and due to past popularity they are selling very quickly.

AXHOLME SOUTH POLICE REPORT Farmland off the B1396 Westwoodside – Theft, Criminal Damage, Anti-social behaviour, off-road bikes. Calls for service to these areas have seen an increase recently and centres in and around the B1396 including Pelfintax, Wroot Road, Idle Bank and Tindlebank and including private land owned by local farmers and others. The times of reports vary throughout the 24 hour period. The calls include reports of theft including theft of cable, burglary, PC Constable 1169 PCSO 7574 Sue Fahy suspicious persons with dog(s), criminal damage and Sally Jameson off road bikes. A considerable amount of work and liaison has been built between Neighbourhood staff and the owners and staff working on land to engage them and to identify where offences and offenders are committing these acts and routes they use. Off road bikes are still being used on land without permission and illegally.

UPDATE; With calls for service recently focusing on theft of cable and the effect this has on a community as a whole including Westwoodside being the most recently village affected and the loss of power from early Friday morning till the evening. Humberside Police and energy suppliers are working together to collate and jointly investigate and prevent further offences occurring. Some suppliers are also working with surrounding police forces as these offences are not confined to Humberside. If at any time you become suspicious of any persons please telephone the police. It is far better that we know at the time in order that we can make checks and also to forward onto surrounding police areas as soon as possible, as it is quite usual for such people to frequent other areas during the course of their activities.

Just because the people you see appear to look like they are legitimate this may not be the case so Humberside police do encourage local communities to report anything that on the face of it does not appear normal. Calls for persons trespassing on land with dogs had dropped recently, but this does not mean we have seen the last of such persons.

Countrywatch has seen an increase in numbers on the Isle and this is open to membership from farmers, landowners and other land users. This membership also includes access to a text messaging service which warns of information pertinent to those members, for example hare coursers, deer poaching, and theft. We have now also got members joining from just outside the Humberside Police area and we encourage everyone to promote the scheme and new members are always welcome.

Anti-social Behaviour within the South ward during Halloween and Bonfire night period.

Historically this period of the year inevitably brings increased calls for service to not only the police but also other partner agencies including the fire service. Reports during the period 30 th October and 6th November can become quite problematic including reports of anti-social behaviour, criminal damage, public order offences and other environmental issues from bonfires and fireworks. This impacts on the calls for services for both police and Humberside Fire and Rescue, but we would encourage anyone affected to ring in and report matters at the time to the police on telephone number 101, but if considered an emergency then 999 for police of Fire. Anti-social behaviour and crime and disorder can cause significant problems for a community and we would encourage the co-operation of parents to ensure their children are safe and behave in a considerate manner.

Recent Issues Driving offences = A male has been reported for driving offences on Haxey Lane on 15/11/2011. Driver pleaded guilty = A female driver pleaded guilty at court recently for an offence of speeding and received 6 points on her licence and £175 costs. Two males arrested = Two males who reside in the Epworth area were arrested for theft of motor vehicle on 16/11/2011 in Haxey and further arrested from the Goole area. Both males on bail pending extensive enquiries required. Vehicle seized = A white van was seized on the 27/11/2011 after being driven with no insurance in Westwoodside.

What inspired Ellie to write the poem?

This came about through Ellie and her class being asked to think of a magical box that would help many people with its contents. The class had watched Wizard of Oz to get some ideas for characters to help with their box contents and also to develop their own character, extending their thinking to creating a reason for this new character to visit The Emerald City.

Obviously, Ellie's fairy needs to get to the Emerald City to try to find a pair of wings!

Whilst the response rate was disappointing at just 5%, the survey did provide some useful information. Three per cent of households in Haxey Parish registered overall dissatisfaction with the local bus service which is currently being provided in the area.

Furthermore, analysis of the returned questionnaires revealed that 81% of dissatisfaction would be eliminated should the timings and frequency of available bus services be adjusted and increased. However, it is important to note that that the split between ‗satisfied with the service‘ and ‗dissatisfied with the service‘ is 40% ‗satisfied‘ and 60% ‗dissatisfied‘ when based upon the actual number of completed questionnaires that were returned.

The majority of comments expressing dissatisfaction with the bus service currently provided call for an increase in the frequency of service offered together with an adjustment to some of the present bus departure times. It is also felt by certain people that an evening and Sunday service ought to be introduced if at all possible. An increase in the number of buses to and from Gainsborough would also be appreciated.

A number of respondents also make the point that timings of the current bus service offer little or no help to the majority of local residents wishing to use public transport as a means of getting to and from work.

There is high satisfaction with the current bus pick-up/drop-off locations. However, over 7 out of 10 respondents agreed that it would be a good idea to have bus stop signs and timetable information at bus pick-up/drop off locations.

As part of the survey, a meeting was held in Haxey Memorial Hall attended by representatives from Haxey Parish Council, Haxey Parish Plan Action Group and North Lincolnshire Council.

The event provided an opportunity for local residents to reinforce many of the points made on the completed/returned questionnaires. The opportunity was also taken to discuss in greater detail some concerns relating to current bus departures and pick-up points in Haxey in particular, a better service for residents living on/close to The Nooking would be appreciated as well as for residents living on Akeferry Road, Westwoodside. The possibility of alterations to the layout of the current bus timetable was also discussed.

The results of the recent survey, together with comments made at the ‗come and talk to us‘ session, will now form the basis for discussion between the Parish Council and North Lincolnshire Council with a view to seeking improvement on certain aspects of the public transport service in the local area. A meeting with North Lincolnshire Council has now taken place and it is expected that one initial outcome will be the re-positioning of bus stops, complete with timetables, in the villages, based on the feedback information from Parishioners. Further information on public transport initiatives will be published as it becomes available.

Boundary Commission Proposals Following the decision by the Government to change the Parliamentary Boundaries at the next General Election, the Boundary Commission for England has published its‘ first draft of proposals. Whilst accepting the requirement to carry out the review and that the re-defining of Parliamentary Boundaries would result in some upheaval, Haxey Parish Council was extremely disturbed and disappointed to see that this first draft has proposed the splitting up of the Isle of Axholme community; which we see as an illogical and irrational proposal which will be extremely detrimental to the identity and cohesion of one of the oldest communities in England. The proposal is to split the Isle of Axholme and allocate the Northern Ward to East Yorkshire and the Central and Southern Wards to urban Scunthorpe. This is considered by the Parish Council to be totally illogical and outrageous. In the recent past, the Isle has belonged to Lincolnshire, the Boothferry District of Humberside and latterly North Lincolnshire; however, throughout these changes the Isle has rightly maintained its‘ integrity. The Isle of Axholme has no historic or any other allegiance to East Yorkshire; moreover, it has nothing whatsoever in common with urban Scunthorpe.

The Parish Council has written to the Boundary Commission expressing our concern over these proposals and our worry over the fragmentation of representation for the Isle. The local MP, Andrew Percy, whose seat of Brigg and Goole will disappear under the proposals and the Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, as well as other local organisations have also objected to the draft proposals.

Public Participation The Parish Councils allows the public to engage with members of the Council on matters of interest to them. The public may comment on items of business on the agenda for that council meeting, and councillors may make statements, answer questions etc. However, the Council makes no decisions at this time because the meeting is ―adjourned‖. Please contact the Clerk if you wish to speak within Public Participation at any future Parish Council meetings.

Haxey Parish Council Community Emergency Plan Self Help Questionnaire

Your village needs you !

The Government is working hard to make sure the UK is as prepared as it can be in the event of an emergency. It is important that we are ready too.

During major emergencies, such as the floods of 2007 and the snows of this time last year, public resources are stretched and assistance may not be immediately available. Local help may be vital to provide emergency support to our community.

By taking time to prepare now, we hope to be ready to help ourselves, using our own resources, if an emergency affects us. To achieve that Haxey Parish Council has formed a Community Emergency Team. The team is writing a Community Emergency Plan.

How can you help? For a Community Emergency Plan to be effective we need your help to identify people, especially those with specialist skills, who are willing to help others in an emergency. We also need a list of equipment that could be useful.

Once we have listed the people, skills and equipment available to us, the next step is to identify the more vulnerable members of our community. That will ensure that we can prioritise our response to an incident.

Please spare the time to complete the enclosed questionnaire. It will only take a few minutes.

Any information you provide will be held in the strictest confidence and used for no other purpose than the implementation of the Community Emergency Plan. It may help others should the need arise and it will help us to help you.

Village rallies to save its church in Misterton!

When thieves stole lead from All Saints‘ Church roof in Misterton for the third time in 12 weeks, they effectively put a permanent closure notice on the Church door.

An important historic Grade 1 listed building that was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1085, and the oldest building in the village, this well used Church, which receives visitors regularly throughout the day, seven days a week, was left open to the elements. Water poured through the roof and into the Church every time it rained it, causing more and more damage and it was essential that the roof was made water tight before the winter really set in.

However, with a repair bill of £33,308 and a fixed a maximum of £5,000 that the Church‘s insurers will pay towards any one claim in any one year, there didn‘t seem any way of raising the money needed to save the beautiful 1,000 year old Church that had so solidly served the community for the past millennia.

Well, that was until the amazing people of Misterton learned of the Church‘s plight through the Church Roof Appeal. There was horror, abhorrence and total disbelief that anyone would steal from a church, particularly their church, and they rallied to help. In conversations with the Roof Appeal team, people reminisced about family marriages and christenings that had been held at the Church, and it was obvious no one wanted to see the Church boarded up and closed forever.

Galvanised by local feeling and with the invaluable the support of the press, the Roof Appeal team worked hard delivering letters and gift aid envelopes to each and every house in the village. The response was utterly astounding. Donations, support and fundraising ideas flooded in and it wasn‘t long before a full programme of fund-raising events had been organised. People turned out and supported each and every event and, at the time of going to press, and just 10 weeks into the Church Roof Appeal campaign, an incredible £19,671 has been raised.

With the urgency of the repairs uppermost in the Church‘s mind, sections of the repair work are being carried out as soon as there is enough money in the kitty to do so. A new high tech alarm system has recently been installed. Specially designed, this advanced security system is activated by human heat and radiation. The alarm alerts parish members and a central control station if activated and, unlike a lot of alarm systems, it automatically resets itself after activation, meaning the Church will never be without protection.

Work will also begin on part of the Church roof just after Christmas. It is vitally important to repair the part of the roof that covers the organ and, thanks to the amazing response to the Appeal, this work and other works on that side of the roof can now be done.

However, the fight for survival is far from won and, as the weather deteriorates still further, the Appeal becomes more urgent. The Roof Appeal team is working very hard to raise the remaining £13,637 needed as quickly as possible. Fundraising events are still being suggested and a promises auction and race night is being planned for January. At the time of going to press (12 th December) the dates have yet to be confirmed, so watch local press for details.

Again, at the time of going to press (12 th December) the date of the sale has yet to be confirmed, but will be well publicised around the village and in the local press.

The Church cannot thank the village of Misterton enough for all the donations, support and encouragement it has received. It is truly heart warming and humbling that the community is rallying round to save its Church in such a generous and compassionate way.

This target of £33,308 will be achieved, of that the Church is determined, and when it is let the celebrations commence!

Technologically speaking, we live in an amazing world, a world that has seen extraordinary changes and advances over the last 100 years. Television, calculators, computers, communication satellites, supersonic aircraft, organ transplants......... The list is endless.

For all of us, the last few days of 2011 may well have been ones of looking back over past decisions, and over ‗if-only's‘. For some people life is full of regrets; but time, like an unstoppable conveyor belt, carries us on regardless. We know we cannot erase the past, and easily feel that what's done is done and cannot be changed. But is that really correct?

The Bible seems to disagree. It tells us that there is a way to put the past behind us, and to make a new start in life - and that's with God! Fortunately, God is only too ready and willing to help us make that new start, so long as we make the first move and ask him to begin the process in us.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Our January meeting will be on Thursday January 5th when we have our annual slide and digital evening. This is always a popular meeting when various members show us a short selection of photographs on a wide range of subjects, not necessarily natural history. If you have some photographs to share with everyone, please let Geoff or any committee member know before the evening and then the programme and equipment can be organised. You don‘t have to be a brilliant photographer, we just like to have lots of people sharing their interests with us.

Our monthly work party will be on Sunday January 8th. This month we will be working at Epworth Turbary and we will be meeting at the entrance to the reserve at 10am and finishing at about midday.

Everyone is welcome, all you need is enthusiasm, working clothes and gloves, and possibly a flask and snack.

Geoff Trinder will be giving an illustrated talk on reptiles from around the world at our February meeting which will take place on Thursday February 2nd so this is a date to put in your diaries. Geoff is a well known photographer and speaker and this is a fascinating subject, so do come along and find out more about them.

All our indoor meetings are held in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel, Low Street, Haxey on the first Thursday of the month and everyone is welcome, you don‘t have to be a member. There is a small admission charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments.

The Isle of Axholme

This was usually grazed by sheep for two years, thus gave time for the salt to drain off. Wheat often followed for three or four years in succession and then was succeeded by a rotation of potatoes, wheat, oats, and flax or beans. Most arable crops did (and do) very well on warp land. In 1826 wheat was reported growing five feet tall on some of the new warp lands. Yield‟s of six and half quarters (approximately 1 quarter =5 cwt) per acre were recorded which were tremendous yields for those days.

The value of the land rose in spectacular manner. Land on Epworth South Moor valued at around £5.00 an acre was revalued at about £100.00 an acre after warping in the early 19 th century. Rents could be as high as £12.00 an acre in the 19th century.

Potatoes were a crop that produced a high return especially on warp lands. Many of the potatoes were taken by ship to Hull or even London. The ship returned with a load of horse or cow dung. This was liberally spread on the fields – about ten tons per acre. The chief potato varieties grown were „Up-to-Date‟, the „Reading Giant‟ and the „British Queen‟. On this best warp land potatoes and wheat could be grown in alternate years.

Crops on the second best warp had to be more varied – wheat, potatoes and another crop (barley, oats, flax or onions). On the third best warp crops were in a four-course rotation – wheat or oats, potatoes, clover or beans, and oats or wheat. On the other soils in the Isle similar crops were grown as on the third class warp. On the sandy margins there was a greater variation including, in addition, onions, carrots and turnips.

Between 1880 and 1895 oats took over from wheat as the main cereal crop. Celery first appeared in the Isle in the 1890‟s liking especially peat soils and during the 20 th century Axholme celery has become nationally known. However, relatively little was grown then due to high labour requirements. Market gardening ventures started between 1780 and 1817. Mustard, carrots and cauliflowers were grown in addition to other crops.

The years following the drainage brought about changes in agriculture. Arable land and new crops replaced pasture on the commons. Villagers whose ancestors had once relied on wild fowling and fishing were now employed as ploughmen or labourers.

In 1906 Rider Haggard, the writer said, “ The Isle of Axholme is one of the few places in England which may be called truly prosperous”.

DIET IN THE EARLY 19th CENTURY Before the Enclosures, farmers had meat only once or twice. They lived chiefly on bread, butter, milk; eggs flour pudding and sometimes drinking malt liquor. This was a typical diet around 1800: Sunday Bacon, sometimes butcher‟s meat.

Monday Ash heap cake and butter in a hole in the middle, milk to drink with it.

Tuesday Pudding made with milk, wheat, flour and eggs.

Wednesday Bacon.

Thursday Ash heap cake and butter, milk to drink.

Saturday Pan pudding – a pudding made with flour with small bits of bacon in it.

HAXEY GREEN In 1950, the Enterprise bus company was taken over by Lincolnshire Road Car. In previous years until the middle 1940's the local bus company that served the Isle was Enterprise & Silver Dawn their livery being brown and fawn. By May 1949 a change and now Northern Lincolnshire services were operated by Enterprise (Scunthorpe) Passenger Services, in their red and cream livery. Isle services operated between Scunthorpe (Bus Station), Doncaster (Glasgow Paddocks) and Gainsborough (Woolpack). These featured some direct services, express services and connecting services.

All routes to Doncaster from Scunthorpe called at Haxey Green. On Monday to Friday, there were nine outwards from Scunthorpe (service No. 4 the first at 7:am), six from Gainsborough (service No. 4. first at 7:45am) and seven from Doncaster (service No. 6 first at 8:30 am). On Tuesdays & Wednesdays (service No.6a) served Sandtoft as well, the first at 7:55am. On Saturdays the route No.6a. commenced at the Reindeer Inn Sandtoft at 1:55 & 5:50 pm all via Haxey Green, one commenced at the Ellers Tavern, West End at 10:48am again via Haxey Green. The express service (service No. 26) between Scunthorpe and Doncaster had three daily services taking sixty-five minutes, the first leaving Scunthorpe at 9:35am and Doncaster at 11:05am. Weekdays and Saturdays saw, the last bus from Scunthorpe and Gainsborough leaving at 9:pm. Doncaster 7:50pm. Sundays also had services between Doncaster, Scunthorpe and Gainsborough between five & seven outward journeys again the last at 9:pm.

Wroot Travis School News This is always a hectic term and this year December seems to be even shorter than usual.

We chose to do a much more complicated concert this year. It was a play that was a modern version of the nativity with the Angel Gabriel doing a very smart rap and Mary telling Joseph off for not having a mobile phone to summon help when the car broke down. There were some wonderful songs which a lot of our parents are still humming.

Our Nursery and Foundation Stage children went on a visit to Normanby Hall.

They met Santa, had a ride on a train and went to see the reindeer. Fortunately it didn‘t snow this year we couldn‘t go last year because of the bad weather.

We went to the Plowright Theatre in Scunthorpe to see Cinderella. We had a really good time and the children remembered to shout and boo in all the right places.

Our new after school club for Christmas crafts has been running for a few weeks now we‘ve made all sorts of things to take home and there is so much glitter in the carpet it may never come out but we are enjoying ourselves.

We have just had a new tyre park fitted on our playing field. The children have to stay off it for a couple of days to let it set properly and they are itching to start playing with it.

Although it will be all over by the time you read this we are looking forward to our school party in the village hall and to the Christingle service at St Pancras Church. We hope that you had a wonderful Christmas and send you our best wishes for the new year.

HAXEY & WESTWOODSIDE HERITAGE SOCIETY CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION Thursday last 54 members and guests of the Heritage Society braved the stormy evening weather to attend the society‘s Christmas party.

On arrival all were greeted by Christmas music, treated to a warming glass of mulled wine and with the Westwoodside Village Hall dressed with festive decorations members settled down to a quiz.

The highlight of the evenings entertainment was provided by the ever popular Marina Mae who sang a medley of Christmas carols and songs.

Following a traditional Christmas buffet the quiz results and raffle prizes were presented with Mr. David Hook winning the Drinks Hamper.

The evening closed with everyone singing carols, giving a rousing presentation of the ‗Twelve Days of Christmas‘ and finally ‘Auld Langs Syne‘.

On behalf of everyone Mr. Malcolm Deneley thanked the committee for an entertaining evening and all the hard work involved in achieving this.

Starting the New Year off for the Society will be Mrs. Dolby giving her talk ‗The History of Pantomime‘ at the next meeting to be held on Thursday evening 12th. of January at 7.30pm. New members are always welcome.

18th Haxey Scout Group invited to Cranwell!

Haxey Scouts enjoyed a full activity day at R.A.F Cranwell , some activities included the Climbing Wall, Archery, Low Ropes & other skills in scouting. Chief Scout. Bear Grylls, flew in and paid us a visit! He signed one of our scouts books and neckerchiefs. He also signed our new Discover Scouting Display Trailer. We hope to promote Scouting at many shows & festivals with the new trailer.

In the evening all the scouts enjoyed Christmas dinner followed by breakfast the following day supplied by R.A.F. A big thanks to all for a great weekend.

Axholme Camera club members attacked the forth photographic print competition subject with complete gusto and enthusiasm. ―At Work‖ was the title or topic and it was confirmed by the Judge, Mr Martin Lichfield that it must have been a very challenging subject. There were 62 entries in total with 38 coloured and 24 mono or black and white prints.

The Judge Martin Lichfield CPAGB (Credit of the Alliance of Great Britain) gave his comments, most of them positive, and also tips on how he felt that improvements could be made photographically and also using technical adjustments to make the image more suited to the subject title. Martin is a member of Doncaster TTL Photographic Society and has been Judging Photographs for many years. Wednesday evening 7 th December was his second visit to Axholme Camera Club to fulfil the role as Judge. He commented that the subject must have been a hard challenging photographic theme and congratulated the members for their efforts.

The standard was once again high with 22 out of 62 prints being awarded 18 points or over, which equates to 35% of the entries. However the average score of the entire entries was 17. The photographic subjects entered were widely varied and included images from ―Festival of the Plough‖ to ―Elephant Trainers and Cobblers in far of lands‖.

The high scoring members include the following:- (note however: the rule is that members can enter 3 prints in total, 2 coloured and 1 mono or 1 coloured and 2 mono).

Congratulations to all the members for the high standard of prints entered. The last few competitions we have seen a vast improvement in quality of printing and the photographic skills used to achieve these results. Special commendation should be mentioned to:- Linda Rhodes with 3 images above 18, I believe it is her highest score to date. Irvin Kaye with a 20, again I understood that this is Irvin's highest score. Judy Newton with 20 for her print taken at the ―Hair Shop‖ in Westwoodside. A larger A3 copy of the photograph is now hanging up in the shop. It was presented by Judy has a Christmas gift to say thank you to Penny the owner for her service through the year. Tuesday 13th January 2012 – the evening is titled Audio Visuals made easy by George Fiddler. A Practical evening with demonstrations using Pictures to Exe and the music program Audacity to create an Audio Visual slide show.

The inter club selection committee will be meeting shortly after the New Year to chose the Prints for the 2012 LPA Battle's and the Three Way Competition with Retford and TTL Doncaster. Trentside Federation School News – St Martin’s Church of England Primary School, Owston Ferry and West Butterwick Church of England Primary School At this time of year, both schools are particularly busy with all of the Christmas activities in addition to the usual learning. On Wednesday 6th December, the children of St Martin's invited grandparents, the Women's Institute and Members from Lindum Court Residential Care Home in to school for an afternoon of Christmas entertainment. Our community audience was provided with mince pies and scones served by Year six. Sam and Jimmy Smith performed three pieces on the trumpet. The School Choir performed Silent Night and there was a range of traditional carols and more contemporary Christmas Songs, culminating in a communal 'sing song'. Both Infant and Junior pupils performed over the course of the afternoon. The whole event was very enjoyable and much appreciated by the good-spirited audience. Thanks to Miss Jayne Dance for organising this event.

Both schools enjoy involving the local community in the diverse range of activities that happen throughout the year. Next week, there is to be an 'Enterprise Day' at St Martin‘s when children of all ages work together in teams on a specific challenge linked to the combined development of various skills within ICT, Maths and Design and Technology. The challenge is 'Design a Sleigh'! We look forward to seeing the results!

West Butterwick Church of England Primary School led a Community Worship in St Mary's Church on Friday 25th November. It was the first time that the pupils themselves had planned and delivered their own service to the local community.

Over the last 12 months, the school has developed a 'Lighting the Candle Group' - this group was formed when the children were asked if they would like to get involved in planning and delivering regular services in church. Over half the school wanted to join originally, so we had to limit numbers, but it will be possible to vary the membership throughout the academic year.

The children have always played an active role in our worships in church. However, this 'Lighting the Candle Group' has taken it a stage further, with the children themselves thinking through and planning the service in its entirety... such as entrance music, hymns, prayers, scripts, questions to ask the congregation and music to reflect on'. West Butterwick‘s Vicar, Mr Ian Walker, has been in to meet with the group so that he knows what they would like him to do as part of the service also!

The recent Community Service had a theme of 'Who Do You Follow?' and the children told the story of Zacchaeus. The worship was advertised in the local community and we had a really good representation, ranging from Governors, local business people, parents of past-pupils, grandparents, Parish Councillors, Mrs Harvey (Bishop's Visitor), Grandparents, as well as our parents and younger siblings. Our next Community Worship at West Butterwick is on 20th January and the group will be presenting the story of the Lost Sheep with the thought 'God Knows Everyone'.

On Thursday 24th November Barclays Bank came in to West Butterwick School to work with our Junior pupils. Barclays ' Money Matters ' is a programme which helps young people to build the skills, knowledge and confidence they need to manage their money more effectively.

Both schools in our Federation have been working in partnership with Barclays with the shared goal to help our young people understand what they can do to make and manage their money - we all realise as we get older that this kind of help can make lives much easier!

The programme tackled topics such as opening a bank account; budgeting, saving and spending; and gave practical guidance on what to do when something goes wrong. The children found it all very interesting. We would like to thank Barclays Bank for their valuable input with such worthwhile life-skills. Thank you also to Mrs Mandy Axe, a ‗pastparent‘ of St Martin‘s who first suggested that we get involved in this project.

Finally, one of the most memorable learning experiences for both schools recently was our ‗Egyptian Day‘ which came about through the introduction of a new ‗creative curriculum‘ at both schools this term. This joint project provided our Key Stage 2 pupils with exciting and memorable first-hand learning experience of their Creative Curriculum themed studies, based around Ancient Egypt.

North Lincolnshire Museum Service came to lead a learning activity linked to deciding which artefacts Egyptians would want to take with them in to the after-life and why. This then led on to the children deciding which artefacts they themselves would select. Following on from this, the children learnt about how to mummify a body, through role-play.

Miss Dance, our Deputy Head, led an activity on building papyrus boats, providing pupils with the opportunity of replicating the Egyptian method of building boats our of paper using art straws. A very interesting idea and popular too, as40 all of thePlease childrenmention seem to have enjoyed model-making thisresponding term in particular.

Children also studied paintings from the wall of a Pharaoh's tomb, considering these as 'clues from the past' in order to find out about the kinds of outdoor games that children played during Ancient Egyptian times. Children were then taught how to play the game of SENET which is considered to be the world's first-ever board game, originating from Ancient Egypt!

It was a fascinating day, made even more spectacular with all of the costumes that the children wore (including staff!). On top of all of this, we held Children in Need Cake stalls on the same day and raised £72. So it was a very productive day in lots of ways. Thank you to everyone who supported this memorable day for both our schools!

Haxey C of E Primary School News letter Pupils from Year 5 and 6 entered an indoor Athletics tournament on Thursday 1 December. They participated in track and field events. All pupils thoroughly enjoyed the event. Many of the pupils gained 1stplace in a number of events with the team coming overall first in the tournament. Well done!

Also on 1st December we held our Advent service in St Nicholas Church. After being welcomed by Rev. Jeremy Green a full church sang ‗Our God reigns to open the service. The school choir then sang ‗Abba Father let me be‘ and Yr 5 led a time of prayer. The service closed with ‗I the Lord of sea and sky‘.

Between now and the end of term we will, hold our Christmas concerts and parties that the children are all looking forward to finishing off with our Carol Service In St. Nicholas Church.

Doncaster Advanced Motorist A Happy New Year to all our readers.

Driving in adverse winter conditions is more difficult if you and your car aren't properly prepared. By following these simple guidelines you will be safer and ready to deal with winter driving problems.

Is your journey really necessary? If it is, plan it and give yourself plenty of time. Tell someone your intended route and how long you think it's going to take. Listen to the radio for details about road and weather conditions.

Clean the windscreen and windows using a demisting preparation. Check that screen washers are not blocked and that the screen washer bottle is topped up and has a winter additive to stop it freezing. Check that the windscreen wipers are in good condition and work effectively.

Ensure that all lights, brake lights, indicators are working properly and the lenses are clean.

Ensure that the tyres are in good condition and are properly inflated.

Carry the following in your vehicle:- Warning triangle. Hands free mobile phone. Warm coat. First aid kit.

Good torch. Seat belt cutter. Fire extinguisher. Travel rug. Tow rope. Bottled drinking water.

Recovery service contact number. Good map. Pen and paper. Adverse weather and road conditions bring an increased risk of skidding. A skid does not just happen it is almost always caused by the driver's actions.

Keep your speed down and increase your safety gaps when the road is wet or icy.

Braking, steering, acceleration, decelerating and gear changing must be done gently and gradually. If a skid occurs, no matter how strong the temptation, do not brake! Lose speed by gently easing the pressure on the accelerator pedal and, if appropriate, de-clutch.
