Editors Letter....

Happy New Year to all our readers and let's hope you enjoy another year of the Arrow delivered to your door!

I'm not sure just what to say this month. As I write this letter for the January edition it is a snowy 2nd December. I can't get out of the house; I seem cut off from the world except for the computer which, at least, ensures that my e-mails still get through! By the time you read this issue of the Arrow we will be reflecting on how we started the count-down to Christmas with snow up to our knees, and still it kept on coming. Probably like me you were wondering just when it would stop.

The kids had what seemed to be an early Christmas break, not knowing whether they would return to school before their official holiday.

December is usually such a busy month with markets, concerts, events and suchlike. It all happens in December! But this time, Lincoln Christmas market was cancelled, Meadow Hall and the Yorkshire Outlet were closed, Robin Hood airport ground to a halt. Yorkshire was at a standstill.

Thinking of the weather, I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who delivers the Arrow, you have all done a tremendous job and delivered in all weathers. I know it was particularly tough delivering the December issue. It is much appreciated by myself and of course our readers.

Here is to a prosperous New Year, and don't forget keep your articles coming in and if anyone would like to advertise, please be in touch.

Local schools benefit as the regions Prom Fair will be held at FOREST PINES, Scunthorpe, on Sunday 13th February 2011 Organisers of the region‘s newest & largest prom fair and their exhibiting partners are keen to help boost local school fundraising activities and as part of the build up to the Dazzle Prom Fair launched a support package for all participating schools that has encouraged many school prom committees to get involved in the build up to the event to offer advice & assistance to pupils attending next year‘s proms.

Along with the obvious benefits to hire shops and retailers, a whole industry has grown up around the proms. The best hairdressers, make-up artists and manicurists are booked up weeks ahead of the special evening. Taxi and limousine companies are fully committed too, and disco buses right through to vintage cars are rising fast up the list of 'gotta haves.'

To everyone's amazement, boys are now keen smarten up, and trainers give way to smart shoes, with T-shirts replaced by tuxedos. This transformation has been encouraged by teachers, and several have told us that they can see the pupils grow in stature and confidence as they don the dress or the suit.

The new Dazzle Prom Fair will be held at FOREST PINES, SCUNTHORPE, starting at 11.0am and run through to 4p.m. The event will feature live fashion shows offering inspiration and style guidance not only for the girls but for the boys too. The shows which will also include the regional „Street Beat Dancers‟ will be running throughout the day and supported by a whole range of activities including hair demonstrations, body painting, nail art, right through to a vast array of transportation options essential for arriving at the prom in style!

Venue decorations including room settings, balloon compilations will also be on display providing the opportunity for prom organisers and young people to view all their prom needs under one roof. He began with a rendering of a poem by Pam Ayers and then demonstrated interpretations of ―While shepherds watched…,‖ ―Away in a Manger‖, ―Rudolf the Red- nosed Reindeer‖, ―Good King Wenceslas…‖ and several others. Despite his frivolity in many remarks Nick showed his skill with the use of a variety of flowers, common and less so, and at one point Stated ―The magic is always in the plant material‖.

Votes of thanks were given on behalf of Epworth Flower Club and St. Lawrence‘s Flower Club, Scunthorpe who are always guests at open meetings before several people were fortunate enough to win the beautiful arrangements as raffle prizes.

The next meeting of the club will be the New Year bar meal on Monday, 10th January 2011. Details of this will be available from any member of the club.

This is a quarterly meeting with local farmers from both the south and central wards who meet up and discuss issues pertinent to them and how to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour on their land. We would invite any farmer to attend the meeting.

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION POPPY APPEAL 2010 Haxey Parish raised £2810 for this year‘s appeal; an increase of £90 on 2009 which is very creditable in this time of economic difficulties. Our house to house collectors continued to work diligently; it was a dry and sunny weekend for the start of the appeal but it is still frustrating to press bells and wonder if they are ringing in the house and try knockers that are stiff or sound proofed! There are many people who greet collectors with ‗I‘ve been looking out for you and have my donation ready‘ which is heartwarming. The house to house collection raised £2145 and the static points at Carpenters‘ Arms, Duke William, Kings, Greenhill Stores, Low Street Stores, Westwoodside Store, Hair Shop, Westwoodside Post Office and Burnham Mill raised £393. Payments for wreathes and generous donations from Haxey Parish Council and St Nicholas Church raised a further £272.

This year an Act of Remembrance was held at Haxey War Memorial at 11.a.m. on November 11th.

This was well attended and wreathes were laid.

Haxey Church was full for the Remembrance Sunday Parade Service; support from the uniformed groups was excellent.

West Butterwick Hall, Ullyett Lane, West Butterwick, - Anti-social behaviour, Criminal Damage We have received reports of youths congregating around the hall. It appears that they frequent this venue between 6-30pm and 8-30pm on a Monday night on the window sill at the front of the hall. Two motor vehicles on Monday 15th November 2010 had their rear windscreen wipers snapped off. There have also been PC Constable 1839 PC Constable 1169 reports of the youths knocking on the meeting room Tina Starbuck Sally Jameson windows during a parish council meeting.

The Neighbourhood team are making regular patrols of the area and will deal with any offences and offenders committing the issues for the patrons of the hall. Anyone with any information should contact police on 0845 60 60 222. We would encourage any young people that are not behaving themselves properly to stop making a nuisance of themselves at the hall and allow those who do use the facilities in a proper manner to go about their business without any interruption.

St Martin‟s Church and Castle Hill, Owston Ferry: Anti-social behaviour, Underage drinking, Criminal Damage, drug offences.

We received reports of youths congregating around the church and Castle Hill mainly of an evening. Due to the locality it does make it difficult for these people to be seen ordinarily and is an ideal area for groups to gather. There is also evidence of empty bottles of alcohol and other litter have been found.

UPDATE and CLOSURE - There have been no further calls for service to the area, however we will as a matter of course, keep a check on the area during out patrols when other priorities allow. With regards to the involvement of the police, we have attended calls for service and have also patrolled as a matter of course during identified times and have spoken with groups who have engaged with police, but none of whom had any drink or other contraband on them.

Members of the Neighbourhood team were once again invited to attend Westwoodside Village Hall, Westwoodside on 22 November 2010 to meet with the cubs. We have been thanked for our visit by the leade Mr Iain Birrell and has extended our invitation to attend annually each year to engage with the cubs as it is useful means of community engagement with young people.

Recently football fanatics were rewarded with free tickets for Scunthorpe United home matches after taking part in training sessions with On Target at Epworth Leisure Centre which have been run various partner agencies working together. Pc Mick Tune, the Youth Diversion Co-ordinator said, ―The On Target ethos is for young people to meet and take part in positive activity of their choosing in a relaxed, but structured environment. The addition of Scunthorpe United as lead deliverers of the football has enabled youngsters to provide incentives to the young people in the different areas. The big plus for the police is that the Neighbourhood Staff in localities can engage with the young people in an environment that assists us in building positive relationships‖ For more information call Epworth Leisure Centre on 01427 873845 or e-mail michelle.spacey@northlincs.gov.uk With the current spell of cold weather it is worth reminding all road users and pedestrians to take care. Motorists are reminded to take care on icy roads and especially during times of heavy snow.

A few of the recommendations include;Take care wherever you are walking and try to stay on the paths and be visible.

Get up at lest 10 minutes early to give you time to prepare your mode of transport ready to travel on the roads and motorways. Make allowances when the bad weather closes in but also be prepared that you may inevitability be late.

Clear all windows of snow and ice.

Ensure your mobile phone is fully charged Consider having with you items like a first aid kit, tow rope, blankets, warm coat(s) and boots, battery charger, jump leads, shovel, a warning triangle and an old rug/sack to put under your wheels if you get stuck in the snow.

Plan your route and check on roads that have been gritted.

When travelling in snow and ice your stopping distances are 10 times longer, so please take care and drive carefully.

A HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM HAXEY PARISH COUNCIL Christmas Lights Within the Parish Plan an action was created to form a group to install Christmas lights in the parish.

There are several groups within the parish actively raising funds for displays in Westwoodside, East Lound and now a newly installed tree and lights outside Haxey Memorial Hall. The Parish Council wish to encourage these and it has been suggested that maybe the groups should come together to discuss the entire parish needs. What do you think? Please contact the Clerk with your views.

Bus shelters Do you use your local parish bus shelter? We do have a few in the Parish but some are not now on bus routes. The Parish Council are responsible for their upkeep and we are carrying out a survey to assist in the decision to continue the maintenance of these bus shelters in and around the parish or to remove them. Please contact the Clerk via email or post if you would like your comments to be noted.

Remembrance Day and Armistice Day Ceremonies The Parish Church was packed to capacity on Remembrance Sunday and on 11 th November, Armistice Day; approximately 50 people attended the wreath laying ceremony at the War Memorial. The Royal British Legion has stated they would be happy if the Parish Council took over the organisation of this event in future. As the Parish Council already funds the refreshments at church it has agreed to do so.

Therefore, an article will be placed in the Arrow next year inviting anyone interested in joining a Working Party which will promote the Armistice Day wreath laying ceremony and particularly encourage local schools and uniformed groups to take part.

Burial Ground / Church Yard The contract has been received and signed by the Parish Council to complete the purchase of land adjacent to the church yard for additional burial land for the parish.

The Parish Council are also in the process of applying to repair the fence, sundial and the footpath in the churchyard and are awaiting further information to submit to the Diocese to obtain a faculty.

Unfortunately the church wall on Church Street has also been recently damaged and the Parish Council are currently obtaining quotes to have this repaired.

Precept 2011/12 At the last Parish Council meeting the budget requirements were presented and the precept for 2011/12 was set at £35,000. The precept will therefore remain the same as 2010/11 in this current economic climate.

Haxey Parish Photographic Competition Generous prizes are again on offer in the Annual Parish Photographic Competition organised by the Parish Council and Axholme Camera Club. There will be many opportunities in the coming weeks to take some great action shots of Parish life.

Santa will be coming round on his sleigh, Westwoodside Lights switch-on, Christingle and the Christmas celebrations at the church and the chapels, carol singing, Christmas and New Year Celebrations and, of course, Haxey Hood.

There will be 4 sections this year. Children 4 years to 11 years (£50 prize), Children 12 years to 18 years (£50), Adults (£75) and Camera Club members (£50). All entries must be taken in the Parish and by residents of the Parish. Closing date will be April 2010 (Further details to follow).

Wroot Travis School News letter In November Daisy and Annie, both aged 4, asked if they could make buns and biscuits to sell for Children in Need.

Not wanting to put off these two enterprising young ladies we went ahead with the idea. The girls ran their own cake stall and we had a non-uniform day. We raised £62.23 for Children in Need a great success.

On 25th November our KS2 children went to Doncaster Dome to see Shakespear 4 Kidz production of Midsummer Night‘s Dream. It was a brilliant performance and we all came away humming the tunes and laughing at the comical performers.

And then it snowed. At first it was great fun and we played out in it. Then it got worse and school closed as it was too dangerous for the children and staff to come to school if they lived outside the village. Epworth school was also closed and our dinners come from their kitchen so we would have had no school meals.

After a week away from school our caretakers broke down the icicles and cleared the path into school. The roads became passable, with care, and we came back to school. It has been difficult as the road outside school is still covered with ice and now slush, there is nowhere to park or turn a car round but most of our parents have braved the conditions and brought their children to school.

The chickens don‘t like it and are staying inside. They are missing their afternoon romp in the school grounds but get lots of treats. They do come down their ladder if you visit them bearing food.

Geoff Espin will be taking us on a trip round Europe to see a variety of things, including beautiful orchids and butterflies.

Hearing peoples personal accounts of experiences like this is always fascinating, so do come along and hear them for yourself.

We meet on the first Thursday of the month from October to May at the new hall at the rear of Haxey Methodist Chapel on Low Street starting at 7.30pm. THE WESLEYS Samuel Wesley arrived as the Vicar of Epworth on 1697. the district was still in turmoil resulting from the opposition to the drainage. Samuel had a non-conformist tradition. The Act of Uniformity ejected his grandfather from his parish at Charmouth. His father was ejected from his parish at Whitchurch, Devon after being sent to prison for failing to use the Common Prayer Book. However, Samuel came to Epworth holding High Church principals, a deep loyalty to the crown and to the Tory Government of the times as well as high moral principles. The local people had few of these views. In 1702 the Rectory was set on fire and two-thirds burnt to the ground. In 1704 fire destroyed all the Rector‟s flax. In 1705 during the violent elections, he was taken to Lincoln jail. Later in 1705 his cattle were maimed. In 1709 was the famous fire that destroyed the Rectory. Again, this was probable arson. The Wesley family was in bed when the fire broke out between eleven and twelve o‟clock on February 9th. The family managed to escape through a window. John was trapped and was eventually rescued from an upstairs window.

Samuel Wesley was very scholarly. He wrote a history of the Old and New Testaments as well as a work about the book of Job. His wife Susanna was a fine scholar too. She organised the education of her children herself, including the training in “the deeper things of life”. She had 19 children of whom 10 grew to maturity. She brought them up in methodical, strict disciplinarian ways. They were taught to “fear the rod and cry softly”. Each child started education at 5 years.

Her school hours were 9 to 12 o‟clock and 2 to 5 o‟clock. All the children in the first day learnt their alphabet. Later Maths, Grammar, History, Geography, Classics and Theology were taught. With such a comprehensive education rigorously applied, it is not too surprising that John and Charles went to Cambridge University.

It was there in a bible group nicknamed the „Holy Club‟ that the origins of the present day Methodist Church are to be found. Both, however, were ordained Ministers of the Church of England and later John worked as his father‟s curate. After his father‟s death, they both went to Georgia to teach and preach to the Indians, but they failed to understand the people and their difficulties. In 1738 John‟s life was remarkably changed. He saw his religion in a new light. He felt he must go out and tell everyone the “good news” about God. The local clergy found his new methods of teaching distasteful and he was banned from preaching in many churches. He preached in the market squares and the open fields where huge crowds came to hear him. He probably rode about 250,000 miles throughout the country. He returned frequently to Epworth and in 1784 he wrote, “I rode to Epworth which I still love beyond most places in the world”.

Charles also rode around England preaching, but he still found time to write over 6,000 hymns.

John and Charles died as ordained members of the Church of England. They did not set out with the idea of creating a new church, but as their ideas and methods became more widely known so the formation of a new church became a possibility.

Ian Pinn visited Axholme Camera Club to judge the Christmas Card Design competition. These digitally projected images gave Vice Chairman George Fiddler and Competition Secretary Jan Neale chance to get to grips with new software specifically designed to make the job easier, and it did. Images and titles appeared on screen, and those shortlisted were re-run for final analysis. Winner of the colour section was David Neale with a delightful study of Polar Bears and an amusing caption, with Lynda Rhodes and Jan Neale in 2nd and 3rd places. The monochrome section winner was Jean Goodburne with multiple snow scenes, a timely reminder of last winter and a warning of what may be to come. George Fiddler and Andy Kershaw took 2nd and 3rd places in this section.

Recent club nights have included a low light photography workshop run by member Simon Knight, and visiting speaker Derek Doar who helped solve some problems members experience when converting to monochrome and printing. Non-members who came along to see Peter Baker's show 'A Walk on the Wild Side through the eyes of a Fox' were not disappointed with the different approach he employed in his talk.

The first meeting of the New Year will be Wednesday 5th Jan when Geoff Trinder, co-Vice Chairman, will talk about and show digital scrapbooks, and any members projects.

If you are lucky enough to get a new camera for Christmas, or just want to brush up on your expertise, you will be made very welcome. Beginner or experienced photographer, digital or film, even none of these but with an interest in the subject, why not go along to a meeting? Or visit the website?

Looking forward, popular Nature Photographer Sandy Furness makes a return visit in February, again open to all, as well as competitions, a practical help session, and an evening of portrait photography.

Westwoodside C.E. Primary School YEAR 5 AND 6 CHRISTMAS PLAY HOTSHOT ARRIVES th On Thursday the 9 of December year 5 and 6 will be doing a Christmas play called Hotshot. We have been practicing for two weeks. The first week we practiced it with just the props and the second week we are going to have our first dress rehearsal. The main parts are: Frigerator played by James , Sargent Snowdrop played by Luke, Drip played by Scott Ewen and Hotshot played by Adam. The songs we sing are played by piano and the music stereo. We have 8 songs to sing! Some of them are being danced to by the dancers and they are very good. We practice the play on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. We mainly practice it on the stage in the afternoon.

We have all learnt our lines. Thanks to Mr McKay and Mrs Harris it will be a very good performance.

South Axholme Teen Page As part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme students have to participate in an expedition. For the bronze level award, which is the level that us students at South Axholme are working towards, all students must take part in an 8 mile walk (from the start point of the already designed and designated route) to a campsite where students are expected to be able to set up their own tents and cook their own meals while camping for one night and then walking another 8 miles the second day to the finish point. However if people are taking part in the silver or gold award the amount of miles you have to walk and the amount of nights spent camping become significantly increased.

First of all, every one involved takes part in a practice expedition to allow participants to get a feel for what‘s involved.

Our practice run was on the 3rd and 4th of July this year. We set off from Slingsby, near York, in 3 groups. Each group split their equipment between themselves, for example in our group we split the tent up so that two people could carry it and other members of the group carried the cooking equipment to make sure that everyone had to rely on their own group we set off half an hour after each other. After walking 8 miles north we reached the village of Slingsby, which is where our campsite was situated. When we arrived in our groups we put up our tents and arranged our camp ready for the night and after all that was sorted we fulfilled another requirement by cooking our own dinner. On Sunday morning everyone packed away the tents and tidied up the campsite ready for setting off on another 8 mile trek back south, through the grounds of Castle Howard, to the village of Whitwell-on the-Hill. Throughout the two days the students had to use a map and compass skills to navigate their way to the checkpoints and to finally arrive at the finish point.

Haxey Church of England Primary School News Letter Although the School was closed for 3days due to the bad weather we have rearranged events so the children do not miss out on the festivities. One event that went ahead on time was the visit by FS2 to see Father Christmas at Normanby Park. When they saw Father Christmas they gave him letters so he knew what they wanted for Christmas. While they were there they had a train ride, fed the ducks and saw the deer, and possibly spotted Rudolph. A fantastic day was rounded off with a drink and cookies in the cafĂŠ.

In the last newsletter we reported on a sponsored walk. The amount raised was over ÂŁ1300, half of which will go to PHASE Worldwide and the rest into school funds. The school also sent 57 shoe boxes full of gifts for less fortunate children in Eastern Europe through the Operation Christmas Child Shoebox appeal.

Doncaster Advanced Motorist Take it easy in snow Very happy New Year to all our readers.

With winter starting early last year in November, here is advice for driving on snow and ice especially with freezing conditions most likely to continue this year.

Avoid travelling unless completely necessary and don‘t ignore police warnings or advice to not travel on specific routes. If staying at home in the warm is not an option use the following advice on driving safely through this period.

Make sure your windows are clear and that you have all-round visibility before you set off. Also take the time to clear snow off the roof of your car.

When driving in snow get your speed right - not too fast that you risk losing control but not so slow that you risk losing momentum when you need it.

Start gently from stationary avoiding high revs. Stay in a higher gear for better control and if it is slippery move off in a higher gear rather than just using first gear.

If you get yourself into a skid the main thing to remember is to take your foot off the gas pedal and steer. Only use the brake if you cannot steer out of trouble. Double or even triple your normal stopping distance from the vehicle in front so you are not relying on your brakes to be able to stop. It simply may not happen!

It‘s better to think ahead as you drive to keep moving even if it is at walking pace.

Plan your journey around busier roads as they are more likely to have been gritted. Avoid using short cuts on minor roads – they are less likely to be cleared or treated with salt especially country lanes and housing areas.

Bends are a particular problem in slippery conditions – slow down before you get to the bend so that by the time you turn the steering wheel you have already lost enough speed. On a downhill slope get your speed low before you start the descent and do not let it build up – it is much easier to keep it low than to try and slow down once things get slippery.

If the worst does happen keep track of where you are. If you do have to call for assistance you need to be able to tell the breakdown or emergency services your location so they can find you.

If you must leave your vehicle to telephone for assistance find £110 a safe place to stand away from the traffic flow. If you have just lost control the next driver could well do the same in the same place.

On motorways and dual carriageways it is always better to leave your vehicle and stand a short distance behind and to the safe side of it. Don‘t stand in front of it if at all possible.

Balancing the risks of a collision and hypothermia is something that depends on your situation.

West Butterwick and St Martin‟s, Owston Ferry School News…

We have had a challenging couple of weeks recently due to the severe weather. This resulted in a number of closure days. However, we have soldiered on although a number of events have had to be postponed/rescheduled.

Before the bad weather arrived we were able to go ahead with our St Martin‘s Service of Remembrance at St Martin‘s Church on 12th November. This is a service that takes place every year, providing us with the chance to remember the war dead as well as St Martin himself. St Martin is best remembered for his encounter with a poor beggar one snowy evening, on horse-back. Martin famously spliced his cloak in two with his sword, giving half to the poor beggar. Following this encounter and Martin‘s conversion to Christianity, he became a Monk and later a Bishop. St Martin is remembered all over the world on November 11th (St Martin‘s Day). Lots of countries in Europe have traditions and customs linked to St Martin‘s Day. In some parts of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, children make their own lanterns and go door to door with these, singing St Martin songs, in exchange for sweets. Often, a man dressed as Saint Martin rides on horseback in front of a St Martin‘s Day procession. In some parts of Europe, there is a traditional goose meal. This relates to the legend telling of how Martin didn‘t want to become Bishop so he hid in a stable full of geese. The noise of the geese let the people know where Martin was hiding afterall! In Poland, it is the tradition to buy and eat St Martin croissants. There are also concerts and fireworks shows. In Portugal, St Martin is celebrated because he is linked to the end of the wine-making season. When the new wine is tasted on St Martin‘s Day, then bonfires are lit and chestnuts are roasted in the embers of fire. In Portugal the weather is usually still good in November, so lots of people can enjoy these celebrations. Regrettably, the Lantern Parade in Owston Ferry had to be cancelled due to bad weather but we are hoping that part of the Christmas Fair (also cancelled on the same evening) will be able to be integrated in to an end of term Christmas Assembly afternoon.

West Butterwick children have been preparing for their Carol Service which will take place in St Mary‘s Church on Monday 20th December. We have just heard that West Butterwick has been accepted in the Bibles for Schools Project and this means that all school children will be presented with their very own Bible in January….something to look forward to for the New Year when we return after the Christmas break.

A Christmas Quiz and a Christmas Fair at West Butterwick is planned for the last couple of days of term. However, we will need to see how kind the weather will be to us all in the run-up to these events!
