Haxey W.I. members started the festive season with a Group Carol Service at the Epworth Wesley Church. members were invited to do a Christmas reading and carols were sung. At the interval they were entertained by The South Axholme School band with Christmas medleys. Christmas lunch was served at the Priory Golf Club. A good start to the festive season.

The January meeting members were welcomed to the New Year by our President and a games night was held.

On Wednesday 3rd February at 7.30pm in the Memorial hall the speaker is Mrs. Sylvia Atkinson "An unexpected family History".

During the 2012 season the Isle team will be taking the field against the likes of Grimsby, Boston, Louth and Sleaford; and whilst Haxey may be the only village team in a league of towns, they are intending to firmly establish themselves in the top flight.

Haxey Cricket Club is an extremely well-run club with three senior teams playing at high levels and doing extremely well. They also have a very strong junior section, with teams playing in competitive matches at under 11, under 13 and under 15 years.

The junior coaching set-up is superb, and this is one of the reasons why Haxey attracts so many top young players from miles around, and also why the under 11s went right through last season without losing a single game. It‘s also very pleasing to see so many of the Haxey youngsters going on to represent their county at their respective age levels. Out of the current crop of juniors no less than six have played for Lincolnshire, and 12 have been selected to play representative cricket for North Lincolnshire.

In total, Haxey Cricket Club has in excess of 80 members, which easily makes it the strongest cricket club in the Isle of Axholme – boasting a fine playing field and excellent facilities – including a top class pavilion and electronic scoreboard. And now, after winning promotion to the Lincolnshire ECB Premier League, they are also the number one team in the whole of North Lincolnshire.

But if Haxey is to be successful against the cream of the county, the club needs to raise the bar – and unfortunately this costs money. Success though attracts interest, and support has been forthcoming from many local firms, together with a long list of willing match ball sponsors..

There are however many more ways for local businesses to get involved with Haxey CC and benefit from being associated with Axholme‘s (and North Lincolnshire‘s) number one cricket club.

These include everything from perimeter advertising at the ground - through to sponsorship of the junior teams, ground improvements and the recruitment of a top overseas player, who will not only play for the club but also professionally coach the youngsters.

YOUR FIRST RESPONDER TEAM NEEDS YOU! As we go into a new year the Community First Responder (CFR) scheme that operates in Misterton and surrounding villages is on the look out for more volunteers to be trained in life-saving techniques.

CFR volunteers help to save lives in their local communities throughout the East Midlands and across the UK as a whole. They can provide emergency care if the patient's condition is serious and give reassurance to patients and family prior to the arrival of the ambulance.

The responders gain confidence, skills, knowledge and new friends through their local scheme and volunteering can be flexible to work around the individual. They are trained to give initial help to people suffering from medical emergencies such as chest pains, breathing problems, strokes, collapses and cardiac arrests.

The Five Villages First Responder scheme which operates in Misterton, West Stockwith, Beckingham, Walkeringham, Gringley on the Hill and surrounding areas has been in operation since 2004 and has attended over 1,400 emergency calls in that time. The group of ten volunteers have were called to over 100 incidents in 2011 and vital financial support from local organisations and individuals continued to be strong.

CFR‘s give as little or as much time as they can to be ‗on call‘ working on a rota basis and may be activated by the Ambulance Emergency Operations Centre should a suitable ‗999‘ call be made in the responder‘s local area. Because they live or work in their own communities they can often arrive sooner than the ambulance which can make all the difference in situations such as a cardiac arrest where the patient has stopped breathing.

The equipment responders carry includes an automated external defibrillator (AED), oxygen and other first aid equipment. Training is conducted by the ambulance service to a nationally recognised standard.

Community First Responders come from all different walks of life and volunteer for many different reasons. Potential CFR‘s need to have a

caring attitude, be aged over 18 years, with a full clean driving licence and access to a car and live within Misterton or one of the surrounding villages. Full enhanced criminal records bureau checks are carried out on all CFR‘s prior to commencing training.

AXHOLME SOUTH POLICE REPORT Farmland off the B1396 Westwoodside.

Theft, Criminal Damage, Anti-social behaviour, off road bikes. Calls for service to these areas have seen an increase recently and centres in and around the B1396 including Pelfintax, Wroot Road, Idle Bank and Tindlebank and including private land owned by local farmers and others.

The times of reports vary throughout the 24 hour period. The calls include reports of theft including PC Constable 1169 PCSO 7574 Sue Fahy PC Constable 1839 Sally Jameson Tina Starbuck theft of cable, burglary, suspicious persons with dog (s), criminal damage and off road bikes. A considerable amount of work and liaison has been built between Neighbourhood staff and the owners and staff working on land to engage them and to identify where offences and offenders are committing these acts and routes they use. Off road bikes are still being used on land without permission and illegally.

UPDATE; With calls for service recently focusing on theft of cable and the effect this has on a community as a whole including Westwoodside being the most recently village affected and the loss of power from early Friday morning till the evening. Humberside Police and energy suppliers are working together to collate and jointly investigate and prevent further offences occurring. Some suppliers are also working with surrounding police forces as these offences are not confined to Humberside. If at any time you become suspicious of any persons please telephone the police. It is far better that we know at the time in order that we can make checks and also to forward onto surrounding police areas as soon as possible, as it is quite usual for such people to frequent other areas during the course of their activities. Just because the people you see appear to look like they are legitimate this may not be the case so Humberside police do encourage local communities to report anything that on the face of it does not appear normal. We have leaflets which contain advice for parents and riders of the various bikes being used off road.

Please contact PC Starbuck if you wish to have one delivered to you or you can call in at Epworth Police Station when the front counter service is available by a member of staff, generally on a Monday or Thursday during 0900 to 1500hrs, to avoid a wasted journey it may be prudent to call on 101 to check that the front desk service is running that particular day.

Calls for persons trespassing on land with dogs had dropped recently, but this does not mean we have seen the last of such persons. Neighbourhood officers have submitted files for a total of 8 persons committing offences relation to poaching and we await their outcome from the judicial system. Countrywatch has seen an increase in numbers on the Isle and this is open to membership from farmers, landowners and other land users. This membership also includes access to a text messaging service which warns of information pertinent to those members, for example hare coursers, deer poaching, and theft. We have now also got members joining from just outside the Humberside Police area and we encourage everyone to promote the scheme and new members are always welcome.

Wroot Crime Prevention.

Calls for service to the village of Wroot saw a rapid rise in December, where offences included thefts and non dwelling burglaries over a period of time during the night.

UPDATE ; Neighbourhood staff attended a surgery/meeting at the village hall on Wednesday 21 December 2011 where there was a large audience from the local community. A considerable amount of time was spent listening to concerns and also explanations of police activity. There is further work in progress both by police, partner agencies and the local community to prevent such incidents in the future.

The Haxey Hood took place last Friday 6th January 2012 Pc Tina Starbuck is pleased to report that this event was enjoyed by all who attended it. Numerous people attended all in good spirits and the officer reports that the event took place with very few incidents of public order being reported to the police.

Haxey Parish Council, Newsletter, February 2012 Parish Clerk - Deb Hotson Email: haxeypc@live.co.uk Postal Address: Haxey Memorial Hall, High Street, Haxey, DN9 2HH Telephone: 01652 618306 / 07800 569 589 Website: www.haxeyparish.org.uk Haxey Parish Council - Annual Report and future plans Following the freezing by the Parish Council of the Precept for the third consecutive year, the Council thought it would be useful to provide a brief report on the work carried out over the past 12 months and the priorities for the coming year.

The Parish Council‘s workload has continued to increase and with the onset of the Localism Bill, there is an expectation of even more issues to be dealt with at parish level. Planning matters, Parish Land Management, general Parish maintenance management and issues raised by Parishioners are dealt with on a day to day basis by the Parish Council Clerk in consultation with the Chairman, Vice-Chairman and the various Committees and Working Groups set up by the Council; moreover, there is a significant Councillor‘s representation at local and County organisations such as the Haxey Combined Charities, Haxey Endowed School Estates, local Police forums, the Local Councils Association, the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust and two Councillors are Haxey Primary School Governors. There is also virtually constant communication with all elements of North Lincolnshire Council (NLC). Major consultations have included the recent Boundary Commission recommendations, the Local Development Framework Plan and the Windfarms – Inland report. Details of results of this representation are recorded in the minutes of the monthly Council meetings which are published on the Parish Council website and Village Notice Boards. 2011 has seen the introduction of a period before each meeting for the public to raise matters with the Parish Council. Parishioners are encouraged to use these opportunities to express their views. This last year has also seen the use of Open Meetings for particularly important issues that affect the Parish providing a successful local ―sounding board‖. The Parish Council will continue to use these events as and when appropriate. Due to the increased workload on the Parish Council, the lack of a permanent sole-use office and meeting room is proving a difficult administrative issue. The Parish Council will be taking action to come up with potential solutions to enable it to keep pace with administrative demands.

Over the last year, major issues the Council has dealt with have included a survey of public transport and an affordable Housing Survey. Further work on these issues is expected over. The Council has disposed of redundant bus shelters and continued the development of the Allotment Site on Cove Road in conjunction with the Allotment Association.

Projects in the St Nicholas closed Churchyard, which is the Parish Council‘s responsibility; include tree and headstone safety surveys and pathway and fencing upgrades, which will require further work and expenditure in the coming year. The Parish Council has also finalised the purchase of a small cemetery adjacent to the current Churchyard, to provide more burial ground and a Memorial Wall, which again will be a focus of attention in the coming year as the project is taken forward and the site is prepared for use.

Flood Management is another area that the Council has continued to pursue in conjunction with the Principal Authority and the local Drainage Board. Significant alleviation work has now been completed on Haxey Lane, in Low Burnham and major works on Thinholme Lane Drain in Westwoodside. Flood Management will remain of major interest to the Council over the coming years as the Environment Agency devolves some of its responsibility to local organisations as described in the Isle of Axholme Flood Risk Management Strategy on which the Council was consulted. The Parish Council has inaugurated the provision of a Community Emergency Plan which is nearing completion and recently arranged for a parish-wide survey to gather information for the plan; moreover, the Council has worked closely with NLC in the development of a contingency plan in the event of heavy snow and the management of the plan locally, should snowfall on the scale of 2010/11 occur.

Ongoing projects that the Parish Council will continue to support include the CPRE Best Kept Village Competition, which resulted in Westwoodside Playing Fields being awarded Best Facility in 2011. The Parish Handyman will continue his work around the Villages with a planting scheme and the provision of hanging baskets in the summer. Over the past year, the Parish Council has supported the local Village Halls, Playing Fields and Sports Clubs and this will continue. The Council financed the adoption of the BT Kiosk in Low Burnham in 2011, funded the cleaning of the Haxey War Memorial on Burrells Corner and actively supported the 90th Anniversary of the British Legion Ceremony held there on 11/11/2011. It is planned to continue to support this event, which included representation from local Schools. The Parish Council will continue to support the Haxey Parish Camera Club Photographic Competition and the Allotment Association Annual Awards. The Council will be producing a Heritage Trail project in 2012 using funding provided by LEADER and there is the intention to update and produce a Parish Directory.

The last year has also seen the Parish Council mount a successful lobby to retain Haxey‘s Library and there is a plan to work with NLC to improve and increase the facilities. A plan to sell off the toilet Block in Haxey has also been reversed. The Parish Council‘s Awards Working Group has commissioned work to refurbish the historic documents held by the Parish and the intention is for these artefacts to be made available for viewing by local educational organisations and those interested in Haxey Parish and Isle of Axholme heritage. Any solution to a larger Parish Office will include the facility to display these important documents to the general public. Speeding has also been a major focus for the Parish Council which has supported North Lincolnshire Council in the reduction of the speed limits on the A161 and Doncaster Road. For the future the Parish Council will be continuing to press for a reduction to 20 mph in the vicinity of local schools.

Finally, for the next year the Parish Council will be actively supporting the celebrations to mark the Queen‘s 60 th Jubilee.

A Great New Event for 2012 Runners from across the country and even beyond will be hitting the streets of Doncaster next May as the town will be hosting its first mass running event for Organisers Metres to Miles many years. The Brooks Run Doncaster 10k takes place on Sunday 13 May and will see people taking part in a 10k which will start and finish at the famous Race- launching the Run Doncaster 2012 event at Doncaster Race course and taking in the Markets area, Town Centre and Town Fields.

Course The event promises to attract participants from across the UK and even runners Left to Right: David Tune of from abroad. A Corporate Team Challenge will also feature in the event, with teams of 3 or more employees from the same firm competing to win the Corpo- organisers Metres to Miles, Mark Warmby Northern Territory rate Shield.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Geoff Trinder will be giving an illustrated talk on reptiles from around the world at our February meeting which will take place on Thursday February 2nd at 7.30pm. Geoff is a well known photographer and speaker and this is a fascinating subject, so do come along and find out more about them. The meetings are always open to everyone.

Our monthly work party will be on Sunday February 5th. This month we will be working on Rush Furlong, a small meadow on the outskirts of Haxey. One of the things we will be doing is hedge laying so if you would like to come along and help and learn how this is done you would be very welcome.

We will meet at the reserve at 10am and finish about midday. All you need is enthusiasm, working clothes and gloves, and possibly a flask and snack.

Our March meeting will be held on Thursday March 1st at 7.30pm. This month we have Geoff Lee telling us all about native British trees. There is a wide variety of these so if you want to find out how to identify them by looking at the bark, leaves or seeds and you want to know more about the wildlife they support, then come and join us in Haxey.

All our indoor meetings are held in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel, Low Street, Haxey on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome, you don‘t have to be a member. There is a small admission charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments.

Don‘t forget that bird food is always on sale at our indoor meetings and at Geoff‘s house in Belton, at very competitive prices, just ring if you need anything. TRANSPORT IN THE EARLY 19th CENTURY Before Vermuyden’s drainage, the transport between villages could be quite easily carried out by boat, One could row from Wroot right across to the eastern part of the Isle. In the 17 th, 18th and early 19th centuries communications with Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire were worse than before any attempt at drainage.

Such roads as there were in the Isle ran north/south and these were impassable in winter even on horseback. Attempts were made to lay causeways of flagstones wide enough for a horse to walk on. During the years 1810, 1811 and 1812 when agricultural prices were high, the causeways were completed from village to village. However, these were soon in a bad state and the custom of the country became that a pedestrian should give way to a horse for fear of the horse, carrying a load, being turned off the causeway into the mud. Macadam’s improvements percolated through to the Isle and by 1838 good and durable roads had been made. A person could walk from Owston Ferry to Haxey, Epworth, Belton, Crowle and Luddington. After the roads had been made one horse and cart could pull as heavy a load as had taken four horses on the previous tracks. Even in the 1850’s flagstone roads were still in evidence in some parts of the Isle.

Steam navigation of the Trent provided communication to Hull. The first steam packet boat ran between Gainsborough and Hull calling at Axholme ports on the Trent bank. The S.S. ‘Caledonia’ supplied the first service in 1815. The service was discontinued during the 1914-18 war.

EPWORTH MARKETS AND FAIRS IN THE 19th CENTURY The Market Place and Market Cross are all that remains of a weekly market in Epworth dating back to the times of Richard11. Market day was Thursday and on sale were a great range of farm produce varying from corn, sack cloth to butter etc. During the Napoleonic Wars, corn prices were high and the market was very busy. By the 1850’s the market was in decline due to the ability to move produce to larger towns. Road transport provided communication with Hull. By 1900 the market was almost disused and it was discontinued a few years later.

The two annual fairs date back also to Richard11. They were held annually on the first Thursday after the 1st May and the first Thursday after the 29th September. At these fairs were held great shows of oxen, horses and sheep. The fairs still remained in the form of children’s amusements fairs in the 1970’s.

The Haxey Hood

Year Six

Next Hood Day: Saturday 5th January 2013

On Friday the 6th of January rivals Haxey and Westwoodside came together for the annual event which is the Haxey Hood.

700 years ago Lady de Mowbray was out riding towards Westwoodside on the hill that separates it from Haxey.As she went over the hill her silk riding hood was blown away by the wind.

Thirteen farm workers in the field rushed to help and chased the hood all over the field. It was finally caught by one of the farm workers, but being too shy to hand it back to the lady, gave it to one of the others to hand back to her. She thanked the farm worker who had returned the hood and said that he had acted like a Lord. Whereas the worker who had actually caught the hood was a Fool. So amused was she by this act of chivalry and the resulting chase, that she donated 13 acres of land on condition that the chase for the hood would be reenacted each year.This re-enactment over the centuries has become known as "The Haxey Hood" . This year after a long and gruesome battle on the field between Haxey and Westwoodside , Haxey pushed slowly toward their village . After a run around the block and down the back road the Hood reached the Duke William Pub located on Haxey’s Church street. Haxey won and celebrated with a deserved English pint .

Trentside Federation School News – St Martin’s Church of England Primary School, Owston Ferry and West Butterwick Church of England Primary School We are well and truly back in to the swing of things, starting the new year with a celebratory assembly for what 2012 promises to be – A year of celebration linked to the Diamond Jubilee, the Olympics as well as ‗personal challenge‘ linked to learning.

In addition to this, both schools are having a focus on Reading and phonics this term with Key Stage 2 linking this in to their creative curriculum theme of ‗Brown‘ through the study of Roald Dahl as an author. An exciting educational visit to Cadbury World in Birmingham planned for March has, of course, been inspired by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!

Nature has provided inspiration for the Infants at West Butterwick who have produced some exquisite observational pastel drawings of birds as well as weaving birds‘ nests using a combination of natural materials such as twigs and wool. This has been extended to their ICT studies, teaching them skills for producing Power Point presentations linked to what‘s involved in making Bird Feeders :- cost, ingredients and equipment.

School Councils at both St Martin‘s and West Butterwick continue to work hard. Priorities this term are designing and selling Eco Bags at West Butterwick linked to promoting a greater awareness of an eco-friendly existence. This links in with the school‘s bronze eco-status application. St Martin‘s School Council has recently taken delivery of a new bin for the playground following a litter questionnaire and an increase in fruit and vegetable snacks for Key Stage 2. In February, an exciting competition is to be launched ‗Create a Sculpture from Recycled Rubbish‘, to be judged by Owston Ferry‘s Parish Councillors. We have workshops running in February also, for both Infants and Juniors linked to ‗Litter Busters‘ ; an educational experience with activities that are credited to Eco Schools Awards.

St Martin‘s already holds a Bronze award is now working towards Silver. ‗Litter Busters‘ educates children on what litter is and why it is bad. Also, how it can damage the environment posing risks to people, animals; spread germs and make areas feel ‗scruffy‘. At both schools, our pupils are already well-educated on this but they are keen to ‗make a difference and provide a valuable contribution to their community‘. Our pupils will be working on this with the ‗Neighbourhood Response Team‘ within the North Lincolnshire Local Authority.

We are hoping that the new year will ‗bring the world closer‘ in our Federation as both schools eagerly await to hear from their ‗Global Education Partner Schools‘ in Nepal and Ethiopia. We have written letters and ‗mini personal portfolios‘ that have gone off via Airmail and we check our post each day now, in anticipation of replies. We will keep you posted!

Staying a little closer to home this term, Years 1 and 2 at St Martin‘s will be visiting the Lincolnshire Life Museum in Lincoln in connection with their studies. This is the largest and most diverse community museum in Lincolnshire.

The children will hopefully gain memorable first-hand experiences of the rich and varied social history collection held there, that reflects and celebrates the culture of Lincolnshire and its people from 1750 to the present day.

Exhibits illustrate commercial, domestic, agricultural, industrial and community life. We look forward to hearing how they get on with this visit and seeing how it impacts on their ‗follow-up learning‘ in the classroom too.

So, all in all, a busy and enthusiastic start to 2012. Happy New Year to you all!

Gents Victorious in Battles Competition With the Ladies.

Axholme Camera Club welcomed in the New Year with its first Photo print competition. This was in deed a true competition in every sense of the word, we could even describe it as a Battle of the Sexes, it was Ladies verses the Gents. The subject was OPEN as not to put any limits that may give advantage to one side or the other. Therefore, the members brought a wide and varied choice of titles. There was photographs from Bondi Beach and Bali to portraits of family and pets, and birds of many colours to monochrome images illustrating the workings of the piano.

After the judgement decisions were complete the Judge, Mr Ian Pinn, expressed his thoughts relating to the the quality of the photography, stating that entries were of a high standard and he had enjoyed the chance to judge the competition.

Ian was a little late arriving due to the weather with very high winds on the motorway which slowed down the traffic extending the journey from Nottingham. Nevertheless, Ian began judging with very little time to review the images. He made the comment that we had more members attending than Nottingham the night before. Ian's style and experience has a Judge began to show through from the start when he gave good critical and positive advice on how to improve each image.

There was a total of 76 entries, 56 coloured and 28 Mono or Black and White images. However, these were separated into the Ladies and Gents, were the Ladies had 13 colour and 7 mono to the Gents 35 colour and 21 mono.

Once the judging had been completed it was left to Geoff Trinder the Chairman to keep the proceedings moving until the scores had been ratified by Dave Neale one of the Competition Secretaries. The scores are average by the number of members in each section to ensure fair play due to the unbalanced number of female entries. After great deliberation it was announced that the Gents had won by a very narrow margin. Final score was Gents 15.71, Ladies 15.65 this was followed by howls and shouts such as ―Wait till next year‖. It was all in good fun and the night ended with members wishing each other a happy new year. This is the third year that Axholme Camera Club have run the Ladies Verses the Gents competition. To date the Gents are leading 2 to 1.

The number of high scoring images demonstrates the standard of the photography that the members are producing today is of a high-level.

PANTOMIME AT THE HERITAGE SOCIETY Thursday 10th. Jan. The Good Fairy( Mrs. Sue Dolby) waved her magic wand over the Haxey & Westwoodside Heritage Society and captivated her audience with her talk on the History of Pantomime.

Sue explained that no one knows where Pantomime originated but it can be traced back to Greek and Roman times when the ancient Greeks would perform with mime whilst waving masks and the Romans celebrated the festival of Saturnaria with men dressed as women.

Over time these activities progressed through Europe eventually reaching London via France resulting in street theatre where using mime overcame any language barrier.

By the early 1800s these presentations with characters such as Punchinello and Harlequin became Christmas time entertainment when Joseph Grimaldi came over from Italy with his young son and by the mid 1800s Sir Augustus Harris had introduced pantomime as we know it today.

Sue went on to display pantomime artwork featuring numerous popular pantomimes and posters of well known artists in pantomime roles.

To rousing applause Sue ended the talk with her performance of ‗Nobody Loves a Fairy when she‘s Forty‘.

Earlier in the evening Jackie Starr, Chairman, welcoming members to their first meeting of the New Year, reviewed the very enjoyable Christmas Party and highlighted the Society‘s forthcoming events, prominent amongst these were plans for celebrating the Queens Diamond Jubilee, trips to places of interest and attendance at local shows.

With a full programme of speakers and events for the year the Society is to carry out a Publicity & Recruiting campaign to increase awareness of the Society and it‘s activities.

The meeting closed with refreshments served.

The next meeting will be on Thursday 9th. February when Mr. John Roberts & Mr. George Fiddler will give their presentation ‗Villages in the Isle of Axholme‘.

Doncaster Advanced Motorist Driving in Town Dear readers, Denser traffic and more pedestrians make town and city driving far more intense than driving on the open road.

Hazards are also likely to be concealed and there are more junctions and traffic lights etc to deal with. The only way to cope safely with all these potential dangers is to concentrate intensely, spotting them early and taking the appropriate measures to be prepared for them.

Local knowledge is particularly useful in town, but you should never let it lure you into a false sense of security, as most accidents occur within five minutes of home, where drivers are most complacent.

Always position your car to achieve the best view ahead, using the information gained to ensure you‘re in the right lane as early as possible.

Should you make a mistake that cannot easily be rectified with a U- turn, drive on as planned then turn around, making your way back to the correct route.

Advanced observations in town helps you to spot many hazards and identify plenty of useful driving information. Here are some important things to look for…



Parked cars can obscure hazards. As you pass them, choose a speed and road position that gives you enough reaction time if, for example, a door is opening without warning or someone steps out,



Spot tell-tale signs that a car is about to pull out: angled wheels, exhaust smoke and illuminated tail-lights

etc.



Look out for pedestrians who are using traffic crossings incorrectly. Many start crossing when the green man `bleeps` without even looking to see if any traffic is approaching. Also keep an eye out for `late runners`, who will make a dash for it as your lights turn green.



Be aware of pedestrians near schools and pubs at key times, and near offices, stations etc at all times.



Give cyclists plenty of clearance as you pass them.

Look out for them at junctions and always allow them enough space to `wobble`.

Looking ahead for signs will minimise this problem.

Delivery vans often park in awkward places, so take extra care when passing them. Remember to look underneath them to spot the feet of pedestrians who may step out into the road unexpectedly.

Taxis may make unexpected manoeuvres (u-turns, sudden stops) when they spot a fare. Be prepared for this when driving near railway stations and shopping centres etc.
