This years concert in the park will be the last one and will be a tribute to Joan, lets hope as many people can attend as possible.

February brings Valentine‘s Day, treat someone special this year, there are plenty of ideas this month; flowers from Fountain Court Florist, a gift from the Lingerie Boutique or a special meal from the many pubs/restaurants who advertise.

Prom Extravaganza Haxey Memorial Hall

Cinderella eat your heart out.

It is the season for Pantomime, however these delightful ladies on the front cover, Nicola Ryan and Abbie Parrish, are presently rehearsing, not for a Pantomime but for a Grand Fashion Parade. The show is "The Prom Extravaganza" which is being organised by Brides in Silk of Scunthorpe and will take place at 2.30pm on Sunday 6th February 2011 at the Memorial Hall Haxey. The gowns, dresses and other outfits are being supplied by Brides In Silk of 15 Robert Street, Scunthorpe.

Our first slide show in the New Year is being held in the Stephen Jones Community Hall on Thursday the 17th February at 7.30pm.

This is being presented by the well known wild life enthusiast Mr. Geoff Trinder and is entitled "WILDLIFE IN JAPAN" This is a fascinating illustration of wild life in their natural habitat and the photography is brilliant/the commentary is of a very standard and provides lots of information from personal experience.

There is no admission charge but a collection will be taken to cover overheads and light refreshments.

Saint Martin‘s Church, Owston Ferry Times of Services for February 2011.

St. Martin’s Church has been given two notable awards.

Members at Axholme Camera Club enjoyed an excellent evening with Peter

The first is from the English Heritage,

Lovelock of Colour Confidence.com, before the weather took its toll. Peter came along to give a talk on colour balance which was extremely useful to many members. He explained very clearly the best ways to achieve good colour reproduction on screen and in prints, and how to use calibration tools, so that we are happy that our prints match the on screen image. Although very technical, at least all members went away having seen Colormunki in operation, which reassured many that calibration is not the daunting task it at first appears to be.

Yorkshire and Humber Region Heritage and Lottery Fund.

An application was made in June and it is marvellous that we have been successful and offered a grant towards the necessary eligible project development work in two stages. We have a grant for the first stage and, in principle, an offer has been made towards the grant for the second stage.

There is to be a meeting with the Church‘s Architect in January to work on deadlines.

This grant opens the doors to apply for further grants from other funders and sources in order that further work can be carried out on the Church to bring it back to the glory it once was.

The second award has been given for funding by the Leader Programme to allow St. Martin‘s to be included within the Northern Lincolnshire Heritage and Churches Trail. This creates a series of trails across North and North East Lincolnshire on foot, cycle and in a car. 15 Churches have been included, and four of these are from the Isle of Axholme, being Owston Ferry, Belton, Althorpe and Wroot.

The award gives us display boards together with a booklet making each place of worship also a place of learning and keeping the Church as the hub of the community. We were selected due to the wealth of history within the surrounding area. The trail will start in Spring when the Church will again be open during the day and tea on Sunday will resume being enhanced by the scheme.

Sadly, the Winter weather set in after that, causing a few cancellations. Erica Oram from Sheffield was the first speaker to cancel, which was a pity. Her talk on 'Urban Landscape' would have been very interesting and useful, in view of the forthcoming competition on the same subject. There may be an opportunity to reschedule this talk later in the year.

George Fiddler and Allan Rowsell were due to demonstrate how to add sound to digitally projected images as audio visuals, but this, too, fell foul of the weather and had to be cancelled. The Chairman's Christmas social hangs in the balance, as although a slight thaw at the moment, more bad weather is forecast.

New members seem to join almost every week, often after visiting the club first to see what it's all about. With a growing reputation for friendliness, everyone is made to feel welcome, whether deciding to join or not. If you have an interest in photography of any kind, beginner or experienced alike, or would find any of the speakers of interest, come along to one of the meetings at Haxey Church Hall, or ring Chairman Allan Rowsell on 01427 752400 for more details.

The current Neighbourhood Priority is as follows:West Butterwick Hall, Ullyett Lane, West Butterwick – Anti-social behaviour and criminal damage.

We have received reports of youths congregating around the hall. It appears that they frequent this venue between PC Constable 1839 PC Constable 1169 6-30pm and 8-30pm on a Monday night on Tina Starbuck Sally Jameson the window sill at the front of the th hall. Two motor vehicles on Monday 15 November 2010 had their rear windscreen wipers snapped off. There have also been reports of the youths knocking on the meeting room windows during a parish council meeting.

The Neighbourhood team are making regular patrols of the area and will deal with any offences and offenders committing the issues for the patrons of the hall. If anyone has any information regarding this matter please contact any member of the Neighbourhood team or if witnessing any incident please phone through for an incident log to be created on 0845 60 60 222. We have already been given some names that have been seen at the location so we would encourage any young people that are not behaving themselves properly to stop making a nuisance of themselves at the hall and allow those who do use the facilities in a proper manner to go about their business without any interruption.

UPDATE; Reports in the area have seen a huge decrease over the Christmas/New Year period, however Neighbourhood staff will continue to patrol and monitor this situation.

A Male has been charged with theft of vehicle and is due to appear in Court in January.

A male from West Butterwick pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage in the village.

On Target continues to run for the foreseeable future. The multi-agency On Target football for boys and girls aged 8-19 years has started at Epworth Leisure Centre multi use games area. HAXEY AND WESTWOODSIDE HERITAGE SOCIETY Stepping into the breach at the first 2011 meeting of the Haxey and Westwoodside Heritage Society was Dr. Malcolm Dalby, past Curator of the Retford Museum.

Introducing Dr. Dalby as the evenings replacement speaker, Chairman Mrs. Jackie Starr explained that the booked speaker, Mr. Aubrey Lindley, was ill and could not attend.

Starting the evening off Mrs. Starr welcomed members to the meeting thanking them for the two donations made at the end of 2010, £50 in support of the Westwoodside Lights Committee and £21. 11p. to the Royal British Legion collected during the November ‗Memorial Album‘ meeting.

Members were told of the Society‘s plans for 2011, as well as the regular monthly speaker meetings a Spring Sale, a ‗Bygones Photo Display & Strawberry Tea‗, a coach trip to Tutbury Castle and the society‘s attendance at several local functions would take place.

Dr. Dalby‘s talk ‗Street Furniture‘ was illustrated by a series of slides and commenced with a comparison of a street scene from Victorian times, the same street progressing from Horse & Dray, Hand-carts and Bicycles, to modern Cars, Traffic Bollards and yes Double and Single Yellow Lines!

Moving through the period members memories were refreshed with views of forgotten Traffic Signs, Gas Lamps, Inns Signs, Village Lock-ups, Horse Troughs (now used for floral decoration) and many other past street artefacts.

Thanking Dr. Dalby for a most interesting talk Mrs. Norma Neill, Society President, said that we should all now view our streets somewhat differently.

Closing the meeting the chairman reminded members that the next meeting will be on February 10 th. when Mrs. Sue Leese will speak on the subject of ‗The Lincolnshire Floods of 53‘.

Haxey Parish Council, Newsletter, February 2011 Parish Clerk - Deb Hotson Email: haxeypc@live.co.uk Telephone: 01652 618306 / 07800 569 589 Website: www.haxeyparish.org.uk Haxey Parish Photographic Competition As mentioned last month, the Parish Photographic Competition organised by the Parish Council and Axholme Camera Club will again be held this year.

There are excellent prizes on offer so please send your entries in to Haxey Library before the closing date of 29th April 2011.

Entries will be displayed and judged at the Annual Parish Meeting in May. All entries must be taken in the Parish since 1 st January 2010 and by residents of the Parish. Each entrant is allowed to submit two photographs, with the minimum size of each print being 7‖ x 5‖. All entries must have the Title of the print, their name, address and telephone number printed on paper and glued to the back of the photograph.

Haxey Parish Recent Bad Weather and the formulation of a Parish Council Community Emergency Plan (CEP) Working Party.

On 21st December 2010, Haxey Parish Council discussed the disruption caused by the recent snowfall on Haxey Parish infrastructure and Parishioners and the amount of support received from the Principal Authority, North Lincolnshire Council (NLC). There was a considerable amount of concern expressed during the discussion on the issue based on real and anecdotal evidence provided by Parishioners during the 3 to 4 weeks of the inclement weather. The Council received reports on the state of the roads, pavements, school closures, loss of public transport, vulnerable citizens, ongoing problems and efforts made by Parishioners to try and mitigate the effects of the weather.

Following the discussion, the Parish Council passed 2 resolutions unanimously: one, that a letter should be written to the Principal Authority acknowledging that the recent weather activity had been abnormal and that any organization attempting to normalize day to day activities under these conditions would face considerable difficulty; however, whilst understanding the requirement for NLC to prioritise snow and ice prevention and clearance activities in its area, the overall opinion of the Parish Council, reflecting the overwhelming views of Parishioners, was that NLC had, in effect, abandoned Haxey Parish, resulting in access to and travel around our area being severely restricted for many days, unnecessarily.

Secondly that the Parish Council should establish a Working Party to consider actions that the Council could take to improve the response to any future incidents of this type and others, under the auspices of the provision of a Community Emergency Plan (CEP). The provision of a CEP had been identified as an action from the Parish‘s Community-Led Plan exercise published last year. However, this recent major disruption has now made the production of this Plan a much higher priority for the Parish Council.

Once the Working Group is up and running, the Council plans to enter into a dialogue with NLC Service Providers to assist with the formulation of the CEP and ensure that there is no duplication of effort or responsibility. One of the primary aims of the CEP would be to ensure that in conjunction with NLC the Parish Council are able to maintain early safe access to, from, and around the Parish and to make sure that vulnerable citizens are protected during future abnormal snow and ice events and other emergency situations.

Parish Handyman As you have been made aware it emerged from the Parish Plan that there was a requirement for the establishment of a Parish Handyman. The Parish Council did appoint a local parishioner but due to his other work commitments he could not take up the position. Therefore, following an interview with a further interested applicant, the Parish Council has appointed Mr Keith Pontin to the position with effect from 1st January 2011. The Parish Council Clerk will provide Mr Pontin with tasks around the Parish on a monthly basis and the post will run initially for a year, when a decision will then be taken on its‘ future.

There’s an old saying: Every cloud has a silver lining.

I was reminded of the truth of that saying the other day when listening to the Today Programme on the radio. It was said that the most common New Year‘s resolution for 2011 seemed to be: I must spend more time with friends and family. If our country‘s present economic troubles actually encourage us all to value love and friendship more highly, then we might well look back in years to come with a sense of gratitude.

And that reminds me of the true story of the cotton farmers of Alabama whose crop was ruined in 1915 by a beetle, and who were forced to look for another crop to grow. They hit on peanuts and within 2 years were growing more peanuts than any other region of America, leading to their setting up a statue of the Mexican boll weevil in 1919.

Written on the statue are these words: “In profound appreciation of the boll weevil and what it has done as the herald of prosperity.”

My true story about peanuts in Alabama is a reminder that good can come out of difficulty or disaster. Perhaps we would do well also to remember St. Paul‘s recipe for happiness: to thank God, and to ask God to show us the silver lining in our cloud.

Wroot Travis School News letter Well here we are back to school at the start of a brand new year and everything to look forward to.

The snow has gone and hopefully it won‘t be back, it‘s a lot warmer and we are looking forward to spring.

Epworth Church are creating a Heritage Trail tile pavement and we have been asked to take part.

This week a local potter and a local artist have been working with us in school to plan and make our design for a tile. The children enjoyed the work and look forward to seeing our tile as part of the Heritage Trail.

Wroot Pantomime is on this week several of our children are in the cast and they are having a great time.

The costumes are fantastic and the children are really good. If you missed seeing the panto this year you missed a treat. Someone who saw it said today it was the best value for money entertainment they‘ve seen in a long time.

In February our KS2 children and starting on a series of visits to Study Heslam at Scunthorpe Rugby Club.

They will study DT, Cookery, Maths, Literacy and ICT. The children have been to Study Heslam before and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. It makes a change to do some learning outside of the usual environment.

MONEY, MONEY, MONEY, must be funny – as ABBA once said...

And for us Yorkshire folk, money or rather saving it or spending less of it, is no joke. In some European Countries (most notably Germany and Austria) the financial advantages of saving money by harnessing the suns natural power is common place. This is not because of the increased intensity of solar radiation in these Countries (which in any way is small) it is mainly because of the ‗Feed in Tariffs‘ that the Governments of these Countries have introduced in years gone by thereby making the cost of installing such systems a real environmental, and more importantly for some, a concrete financial ‗no brainer‘ so to speak.

Well guess what? The UK Government has now also introduced very generous ‗Feed in Tariffs‘ for electrical energy generated from solar photo voltaic systems and also for wind turbines.

Many home owners are beginning to realise that with the continuing Bank of England ultra low interest rates, their savings are just not returning anything like the financial returns that they‘re used to and so are turning their attentions other means of generating income and saving outgoings. The ‗Feed in Tariffs‘ (or FITs for short) from solar photovoltaic systems are a fantastic way of doing just that. There are three main advantages to the scheme. Here‘s how it works; After your solar PV system has been installed you will be paid by your current energy provider a rate of 41.3p per kW of energy that the system produces. This is typically paid to you on a quarterly basis.

You also use most if not all of the energy that the system produces (thereby saving on your electricity bill) and will still get paid the rate of 41.3p per kW regardless of whether you use the electricity or not.

If you do not use all of the electricity that the system produces, you will be paid what is known as an ‗export tariff‘. For this you will also be paid 3p per kW. That’s a typical 8% - 12% RETURN, TAX FREE and INFLATION LINKED for 25 YEARS! Depending upon the size and power of the system installed, costs can vary from around £8,000 to over £20,000 but in all instances the typical Return on Investment is around the 10% mark making it far more attractive than money in the bank. In addition to all of this, and quite remarkably, the Government has gone not one step further, but several by guaranteeing that the scheme will run for 25 years for customers who have a system installed before 1st April 2012 and they have also decided to remove any income TAX from the payments making them TAX free and have also linked the payments to inflation! So as inflation rises, so do your payments!

The Government has intended that FITS, at long last, provides a realistic way of encouraging both homeowners and businesses to invest in electricity generating renewable energy systems for the first time.

Ofgem (the Government Energy Watch Dog) have recently estimated a 60% rise in energy prices by 2015.

Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust Trekking in Peru and the Inca Trail Our February meeting will be on Thursday February 3rd when we will have Barbara Spencer talking to us about her time spent trekking in Peru, including the Inca Trail. Peru is a country in the spectacular Andes mountains with wonderful scenery and its own unique culture. Walking the Inca Trail through the mountains takes visitors to the spectacular ancient ruins of Machu Picchu which are said to be at their best at sunrise. Hearing peoples personal accounts of experiences like this are always fascinating so do come along and hear them for yourself.

Advance notice of the meeting on March 3rd Mary Porter will be giving us an illustrated talk on Wildlife Gardening on Thursday March 3 rd. She will be giving us lots of tips and ideas on how to attract wildlife into your garden. This should be valuable information just before the spring gardening season begins.

We meet on the first Thursday of the month from October to May at the new hall at the rear of Haxey Methodist Chapel on Low Street starting at 7.30pm. There is a small admission charge of £1 and there is a raffle and refreshments. Bird food is always on sale at the meetings as well as at Geoff‘s house in Belton.

ALEXANDER KILHAM The ideas of John Wesley were taken and developed by many of his followers.

One such man was Alexander Kilham who was born in Epworth on July 10th 1762 the son of a linen weaver. Alexander took up the ideas of Wesley and became a local preacher, preaching his first sermon at Luddington. He preached around Gainsborough, and later in Pocklington, Whitby, and Newcastle and in 1793 in Aberdeen. He was impressed by the Presbyterian system with its ideas of ministerial and lay government of the church. In 1795 he published a pamphlet called the ‘Progress of Liberty” which attacked ministerial power and demanded the right of the people to share in legislation and government. He also believed in the independence of each individual church or chapel” complete within itself for government, but within a framework of churches being associated for mutual help”.

All Methodists did not share his views and the Wesleyan Conference of 1796 expelled him from their ranks. A year later he helped to found the Methodist New Connexion that flourished and continued until reunited with the Wesleyan Methodist Church within the last eighty years in 1932. The new Connexion was organised similarly to the Methodist Church of today with Leader’s Meetings in local churches to organise locally, Quarterly Meetings, District Synod Meetings, Annual Conferences with equal lay and ministerial representation and an Annual Committee to act from Conference to Conference.

Most of Kilham’s ideas have been since adopted by the Methodist Church. He died at the age of 36 years having worked himself to death and was buried at Nottingham. The Kilham memorial Chapel in Epworth was opened on July 25th 1860.

It was closed due to unification with the Wesleyan Methodists. The building is now used a Youth Centre.

Members of the new Connexion increased steadily from the time of the first conference in 1797 through the 19th century. Here are some figures related to New Connexion membership: 1797 – 5037, 1802 – 5070, 1812 – 8677, 1822 – 10856, 1832 – 12621, 1840 – 21836, 1847 – 19462, 1872 – 30972. There were also 78670 Sunday School Scholars.

Best Christmas ever!!!

Even though Christmas has passed we still seem just as perky, probably because of the presents we received!!! I (Emily) and me (Abigail) are here to tell you about our Christmas. We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed it in real life!

Forget about all the snow trauma and settle down and enjoy my Christmas story! It was Christmas morning and I woke up with a yawn and a stretch of my arms. I charged in to my parents' bedroom and woke them up too.

Then I went and pulled my younger brother and sister, Aaron and Hannah, out of their beds and together we padded downstairs to the lounge where we found 3 piles of presents piled high-one for me, one for Aaron and one for Hannah! Also, my Nanny and Grandad came over for Christmas dinner.

It tasted not just lovely, but out of this world!!!

Now this is my (Emily's) story I woke up and rubbed my eyes, its Christmas day I thought to myself. I got out of bed (very slowly!) and looked at the clock - 7:30 - wow that's a first! I ran into Maisie's bedroom and shook her until she woke up. Then we made my mum & dad get out of bed and go open prezzies in the lounge.

My favourite presents were a black limited edition Wii, a dsi and a canon camera!!! Christmas dinner was even better! SOOO YUMMY!!!

Haxey Church of England Primary School News Letter A new term is upon us and although nothing has happened since we started back, the school had new loft insulation and the cavity walls insulated during the Christmas break. This means that the school will be easier to keep warm during the cold weather.

The school will hold its annual Candlemas service in St. Nicholas Church on February 2 nd at 2pm. This is a wonderful service at which every child brings a candle in a safe holder and they are lit for the duration of the service, a truly wonderful sight.

St Nicholas Church Haxey Youth Group On Sunday 9th January, our youth group along with about 25 members of the congregation enjoyed a trip to see a well-acted pantomime, Dick Whittington, at Retford Majestic Theatre. Everyone that went enjoyed a fun filled evening.

The youth group meets every other Sunday night in St. Nicholas Church Hall for a time of fun and games with refreshments. The dates for the next two months are; - 6th and 20th February, 6th and 20th March. If you are between 11 and 16 come along and join us. You do not have to be attached to the Church to come and enjoy the fun.

On 17th December 2010 the staff and children of St Martin’s School Owston Ferry were pleased and very proud to welcome Lance Bombardier Ben Parkinson to their Christmas service.

Having been in a coma, lost both legs, suffered brain OF DONCASTER LTD damage and more than 30 other injuries, Ben is the UK‘s most badly injured soldier to survive the Supplying Blinds for 25 years ongoing war in Afghanistan and in our opinion, one Visit our showroom or visit our website of the UK‘s most inspirational people too.

I first saw Ben on Calendar news last summer where www.shadesofdoncaster.co.uk they told his heroic story and showed him leaping and see the difference for yourself out of an aeroplane. Here was this remarkable man who had been expected never to walk or talk again, skydiving for charity! Ben‘s story had a big impact on me and I knew I had to get myself and others involved.

Unit 3, Ben and I began communicating by email and Kirk Sandall Ind. Est. through this I learnt of Ben‘s own charity ‗Ben‘s Sandall Stones Road Kirk Sandall Challenge‘. I took Ben‘s story back to school with Doncaster me and the children decided they would like to support Ben in his charity work. We arranged a Non uniform day, Cake stall and Guess Teddy‘s birthday and even the youngest children got involved.

The children raised £208.95 and presented the cheque to Ben at the Christmas service. They also wrote messages of support, a special prayer and spoke of how Ben has inspired them to work hard and never to give up.

He now vows to be able to speak well enough to make a speech at his brother‘s wedding this year and is determined to walk without his frame before the end of the year.

The children and I are now working together to organise more events over the course of the coming year to raise much needed funds for Ben‘s cause, including an Easter raffle and a Summer street party so WATCH THIS SPACE!

Doncaster Advanced Motorist Road Signs Dear Readers, The ending of the red flag requirement in 1896 heralded the ear of the motorcar and some motoring associations took up the business of placing signs. The Motor Car Act of 1903 made local authorities responsible for placing certain warning and propitiatory signs. For crossroads steep hills and dangerous bends.

A hollow red triangle indicated a warning sign a solid red disc signified prohibitions. Speed limit signs had a hollow white ring above the plate giving the speed limit in figures. Other notices were on diamond shaped boards.

Advanced Drivers know what all road signs mean and update their knowledge from time to time with a glance from the Highway Code. Road signs are the shape they are because, even if you can‘t see the sign clearly, say in fog / snow or heavy rain, you‘ll still know when you see a triangular sign that there may be a significant hazard ahead.

That‘s why the Stop sign is shaped octagonal like the fifty pence coin.

If it‘s covered in snow or traffic dirt you still will be able to tell what the sign is by its shape, a Stop sign.

All warning signs are triangular. Advisory signs are rectangular. Round signs are ―the law‖ you must do what they say.

Don‘t ignore them, road signs are there for a reason they provide advanced information to help you avoid danger. You should be extra vigilant about some signs, like those warning signs of schools nearby, as they may indicate a 20mph speed limit ahead.

A pole with two or more signs on it should be read from the top down the top sign being the first hazard.

Also don‘t ignore farmer‘s signs eg: Mud on the road or PYOS, yes (pick your own strawberry‘s) you may find extra traffic movement and pedestrians around the entrance to the field.

The provision of new signs is a continuous process. As £110 the volume and type of traffic on our roads change, ways of giving essential information to drivers and improving traffic flow and road safety have to be reviewed.

New signs and road markings are well and truly tested at certain locations to demonstrate their effectiveness before their wide-scale use is recommended. Special signals and road markings at pedestrian crossings and signs and markings to indicate min-roundabouts and bus lanes ect: it‘s an ongoing research program by the Highways Agency.
