Heavy Snow fell in the Isle, lasting nearly a month. Did you know England is experiencing its worst winter for almost 15 years?

Mowing Chipping Trimming Rotavating Strimming Pruning Drives/Block Paving Pressure Cleaning & Re-sanding To arrange a free visit & quotation

Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed the weather, I hope everyone gave others a helping hand if needed. Whilst the snow can be fun, it can also be a terrible burden for others, especially the elderly. I hope you enjoy the photos in this issue, courtesy of Mr tony Catherall. Also thanks this month to Mr George Fiddler for supplying me with some superb photos of the Haxey Hood. January always seems to be a gloomy month, the excitement of Christmas and New Year gone. We all need cheering up, lets look forward to brighter months ahead with Spring just round the corner. Of course there is Valentines Day and Mothers Day, browse through the Arrow there are plenty of gift ideas. Keep your articles coming in and if any business is interested in advertising, prices start from as little as £20 per month. Also don't forget to check our website: www.arrowpublications.co.uk Enjoy the read. Best Wishes

Wroot Travis School Newsletter We came back to school on Tuesday 5th January and it snowed all day. The dinner lady couldn‘t get to us so we were sent home at lunch time. School was closed the next day too because the roads were too bad to get through. School opened again on Thursday and 15 minutes before home time we donned our wellies and went outside for a snowball fight. Mrs Gallagher was teaching the juniors that afternoon and she joined in. She got the worst of it when all the children ganged up on her. She said ―That was great I haven‘t had a snowball fight in ages‖. We don‘t get snow like this very often so it‘s great to get out there with your friends and enjoy it. It‘s the Wroot Amateur Players Panto, everyone‘s worked so hard and they‘ve been rehearsing for ages. This week we‘ve had two rehearsals followed by four performances. Several of our children and some staff are in the panto and they are feeling very tired now. However it‘s been a great experience for them and they‘ve had some really good fun taking part.

Women's Institute on the 11th February. Wayne Goodison will be giving a talk about his experiences narrow boating. The talk commences at 7.30pm in the School Room adjacent to the Methodist Chapel on High Street, Owston Ferry. Refreshments will be available.

In addition to a new, more powerful extractor fan, some new electrical equipment has been installed, including fridge, microwave and industrial dishwasher and the whole room has benefited from retiling and re-flooring making it a pleasant and efficient place to work. This, however, is only one of several projects undertaken by the hall committee over the last 12 months. We have also re-tiled and decorated the disabled toilet, re-surfaced both the main hall and Jubilee Room floors to restore their polished finish and installed a modern sound system, including hearing loop. We are also extremely pleased to see the improved facilities, especially to the play area outside the hall, provided for those of pre school age by Haxey Pre School, one of our main hall users. It has always been our aim to provide an excellent community facility for all local residents and thanks to our hard -working committee and many other helpers we can proudly say that we have done much to achieve our aim. If you are interested in hiring the hall for any function, please contact Mrs. Anne Robinson on the number listed at the back of the ―Arrow‖.

Come along and join the Society (£2.50 for a year's membership) - new members are always welcome and volunteers are always required at the Smithy on Sunday afternoons during the Summer months.

Haxey Memorial Hall Committee is continually striving to improve hall facilities and, thanks to a generous legacy from a Haxey resident, the late Arthur Jackson, we have been able to spend a considerable sum updating the main hall kitchen.

Epworth & District Flower Club The flower Club has met twice since the last report in the December issue of the Arrow. At the beginning of December, some members and friends, set off by coach to Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. On arrival, we had time to look at the spectacular grounds, have coffee and dodge the rain, before meeting up for lunch together. Elaine, our Chairman, had made arrangements for a private function room, which was beautifully laid out for us to enjoy a superb, seasonal meal in lovely surroundings. ―Ladies who Lunch !!!!!‖. Well done, Elaine. After the meal, we viewed the festively decorated house, the theme this year being fairytales, really setting the scene for Christmas. There was time for a little retail therapy in the many shops before catching the coach for home, after a brilliant day out . At the end of December, we met at Haxey for a Pink Themed Party Night. The guest was Yvonne Oliver, in her role as representative for Breast Cancer Care,to receive a cheque for £400.00 which had been raised by members throughout the year. Sandra Thorpe had organised a floral quiz, and members provided a delicious supper. Another happy meeting. Some members will meet in January for a meal together, but the next meeting at Stephen Jones Community Hall, will be the AGM, on February 8 th at 7.30pm. The Chairman and committee request that all members attend this meeting , if at all possible, as it will prove to be crucial to the future of the Club. Please try to be there .

Best Wishes

Redundancy Brings New Challenge for Local Roofing Contractor After gaining 20 years experience with a Doncaster based roofing company, Eliot Grant faced the devastating news of redundancy as his employer succumbed to the recession. There have been many stories similar to this throughout the last year and Eliot was determined to see this as an opportunity. Eliot decided it was time for him to run his own business, ―I just saw this situation as an opportunity. Your own business is something you dream of, but sometimes you just don't have the guts to go for it‖ says Eliot. Eliot contacted Chris Adams from Success Doncaster, he helped Eliot write a business plan and apply for a business grant. ―Chris was a great help and pointed me in the right direction‖. The business grant helped me buy good quality stationary so my business could have the right image I wanted. Contacting local designer Tony Davies, who is based in Haxey helped me achieve this. Within 2 months EPG Roofing was born, offering the public the best roofing services locally. Business started on 1st January 2010 and Eliot is already receiving a steady amount of enquiries, thanks to the Arrow magazines. Eliot specialises in all roofing requirements and is also skilled in all parts of the building trade. If you would like Eliot to give you a quote for some work call him on 07850 976791. If you need any help with your business, developing new skills or finding a job, contact Success Doncaster on 01302 734554.

Haxey Parish Council, Newsletter, February 2010 Parish Clerk - Deb Hotson Email: haxeypc@live.co.uk Telephone: 01652 618306 / 07800 569 589 Website: www.haxeyparish.org.uk Dog Control Order (DCO) – issued from North Lincolnshire Council Calls to report the existence of fouling are important so we can allocate dog bins, clear away mess and educate dog walkers / owners but it isn't enough to tackle this messy problem. What we need on top of the reports of dog mess requiring attention is for residents, councillors, police colleagues and partner agencies to record and report the following: Name and address of dog walker. There's a high probability that the dog walker will be local and will be known to residents. Registration and description of any vehicle used by a dog walker who isn't a local resident. Time, location, dog description, weather conditions and what the witnesses actually saw linked into 1 and 2 above. If 1 and 2 are not known, as no one is ever seen dog walking, 'event diaries' require to be kept to help us build up the habits of the offending dog walker(s) so Wardens can be tasked on the most likely days / times to 'meet and greet' potential offenders. The above are the bare basics of what we need to start taking a more proactive stance against the MINORITY of irresponsible / selfish dog owners / walkers. When dog walkers are greeted by Wardens we always educate and persuade first and only step into enforcement 'mode' when appropriate. When asked who complained (and we are) we say - this community or this neighbourhood! Parish Handyman During consultation with Parishioners as part of the Haxey Parish Plan process, issues emerged that would be candidate topics for taking forward in the Plan, expected to be published in Spring 10, but were projects that the Parish Council could begin to take forward now. One such issue was the potential provision of a ―Parish Handyman‖. Therefore, the Parish Council has commenced work on this project as part of the Parish Council Land Working Party (LWP) remit and a cost benefit analysis is currently underway. Options could include the direct employment of a part time employee to carry out work in the Parish for a limited number of hours a month; the employment of a Contractor to carry out work in the Parish for a limited number of hours a month, both under the direct control of the Clerk and the final option would be not to further the project on cost/benefit grounds. Tasks currently envisaged for the Handyman are: Churchyard work; Parish Pump maintenance; Notice Board maintenance; maintenance of Dr Dyson's garden; general litter pick-up through the villages/playing fields; tidiness of Westwoodside Pond area; watering of hanging baskets/planting of village spaces. Data gathering on the potential for a Handyman for the Parish continues and the Land Working Party will meet formally in the next month to consider the information collected and come up with a way forward for the Parish Council to consider. Update on Northside The status of Northside Lane, Haxey was raised initially by a local resident a year ago. North Lincolnshire Council‘s initial response was that it was a Private Road. The Parish Council disagreed with this and following extensive consultations with local residents, parishioners generally, visitors, North Lincolnshire Council, the Police and Lincolnshire Archives, decided at their December meeting to ask North Lincolnshire Council to create a Bridleway along the Lane from The Nooking to Upperthorpe Road. Copies of old documents have also been submitted to North Lincolnshire Council that may mean that it is in fact classed as an ―Ancient Highway‖. Whether as a Bridleway or an ―Ancient Highway‖ the Lane will be preserved in its present state, be maintained by North Lincolnshire Council and be a Public Right of Way throughout its length. The Parish Council share local residents concerns about illegal use by motor vehicles and this issue will be discussed at the Parish Council meeting in February.

The Isle of Axholme

Where You Live

Your Local History

Adapted by Anthony Catherall

THE ROMANS The Romans under Emperor Claudius invaded Britain in 43 A.D. His armies very swiftly moved north so that by 47 A.D. they had captured most of the land southeast of a SevernTrent frontier. At Lincoln a legionary fortress was built. Ermine Street and Fosse Way Roman roads meet at Lincoln. When the captured areas had been consolidated the Romans looked north again. In 71 A.D. they struck across the Humber at Brough and across the Trent at Littleborough. Their attack was hampered by the marshy conditions around the Isle of Axholme and further north in the Vale of York. Keeping to the firmer ground the Romans skirted the Isle of Axholme. They set up a garrison town at Danum (Doncaster). They marched north and between 71 and 74 A.D. they set up a legionary fortress at York. Prior to this in 51 A.D. a Roman outpost was set up near Doncaster (probably near Rossington Bridge) in Brigantian territory. At this time the Brigantes and Romans lived in relative peaceful co-existence. Some history books by (Stonehouse & Fletcher) mention the story of the attacks made by the Britons from the forest covered Isle of Axholme on the Romans enroute from and to Doncaster. Eventually the Romans became annoyed at these attacks and apparently sent an army to deal with the attackers. A battle was fought near Austerfield possibly with the famous Roman General Ostorius in charge. The Romans were the visitors and apparently set fire to the forest thus destroying the Britons refuge. Evidence to support this story includes the finding of remains such as parts of swords, heads of battle-axes and a statue of a Roman soldier in oak. One Bronze Roman Coin has been found in 1969 at Epworth and is now in Scunthorpe Museum. It has been dated A.D. 350-353 in the reign of Magnentius. Farming in the Isle at Harvester Farm, Epworth Snow and freezing temperatures have kept us very busy these last few weeks making the usually simple jobs, where you are in and back in the warmth, tasks that have taken half the day! We had frozen water pipes in the cattle yards, which involved having to bucket water into the troughs, much to the delight of the calves that have a fascination for black buckets. The ewes needed 7 bales of hay daily, in order to keep up the nutrition and were very hungry greeting us each morning by rushing like a stampede of‖ woolly beasts‖! All the livestock appear to have survived this cold spell with no problems just a little inconvenience and everyone, including ourselves, is now hoping for some warmer weather. We have just started to sell our Dexter meat which our‖ Yorkshire butcher‖ said, with a smile, ―Not bad at all!!‖. Hopefully this was a positive comment and that our hard work to produce the best quality beef has been achieved. Best Wishes Woolly beasts having their hay

My book review by Liv Title of my book: Bed „n‟ Breakfast star. The main characters in my book are: Elsa, Hunk, Mack, Mum and Pippa. Who wrote my book: Jacqueline Wilson.

The beginning of my story goes like this. Elsa is the eldest and she has hair like a lion‟s mane, it sticks out all curly and orange, and they called her Elsa because there was a lion named Elsa in either a film, or in a book. Elsa has a brother and a sister, Hunk and Pippa. Her mum has a boyfriend called Mack and he is the father of Hunk and Pippa. In the middle they move into a hotel, but it is more like a dump, and their room was so small that you could only fit 15 chairs in it, but the wooden rocking chairs. After a couple of days, Elsa had to go to school, but nobody knew her real life because, she has told them that she is a superstar and all the children in the school ask for her autograph, but she says autographs are sooo last year. At the end the hotel catches on fire and only Elsa can smell it because everyone else is fast asleep, so Elsa screams in her room and Mack jumps up and gets Hunk in one arm and Pippa in the other and, and when he has them in his arms Elsa screams like mad down the corridor “FIRE, THERE IS A FIRE”!!!! and every one comes rushing out of their room and so they all headed for the exit door with their pj‟s on and then the camera people come, with all their gear and Elsa gets to be on telly but she is very embarrassed But after she finishes talking to them she becomes a TV star and Mack finds a new job, and they find a new hotel, and their room was absolutely enormous. You could get 20 elephants in it, and that‟s how the story ends. Good points: The good points are that it describes them very clearly, and it gets all her life in it, and it has a exciting ending where it shows pictures of their new room in their new hotel room.

Members of the Axholme Camera Club enjoyed a very pleasant social evening with a challenging quiz set by the Chairman. This audio visual presentation consisted of theme music from well known films and shows with photographs in various categories, animals, birds, mystery objects, places and well known sayings! The music had to be identified at the same time as the pictures, which proved tricky, but fun. Working in teams, 2 teams gained equal points and shared the prize ( chocolate coins, no expense spared! ) A wonderful buffet prepared by the members was enjoyed before a Famous People Photo quiz, which was won again by two teams ( No prizes this time!). A good time was had by all!

Skew Tower by Cliff Steer

Vice Chairman David Ulyett, who has been 'holding the fort', supported by members of the committee during, the long absence of the Chairman, could relax and enjoy the evening. His thanks go especially to George Fiddler and Andy Kershaw who stepped into the breech as and when necessary. A competition of digitally projected images was well supported, giving judge John Whaley something to think about. David Neale won both monochrome and colour sections, with George Fiddler also gaining 20 points in the monochrome. Steve Worland achieved 20 points in colour and 19 in mono. Cliff Steer's colour image also received 19 points. In February, the Photographer of the Year competition, sponsored by Tom Dennis Imaging of Scunthorpe, will be held on the 3rd, with a Landscape/Seascape Print competition on 23rd. Open to the public on Wednesday March 3rd will be a audio visual presentation by Parry Jenkins of Wroot, entitled 'A Musical Tour '. As he travelled around Europe in the summer, this may give us a clue about the content of what promises to be an enjoyable evening. Held in the Church Hall, Haxey at 7.30 pm, there will be a small door charge of £1.50 to include refreshments. Best Wishes Lynda

Driving Tip - Why backwards is best Dear readers, In a car park, do you reverse into a parking space and drive out, or drive in and reverse out? The next time you are in a car park, have a look around and see how many people reverse into the space. You will probably find that most people actually drive in and reverse out. There is no doubt this may be safer/more convenient if the spaces are angled, when you have to load/unload items from the boot or if it would cause inconvenience to other road users. On the other hand, reversing into the space provides you with several advantages. The first of these is that it is safer to reverse into somewhere you can see into (the parking space), rather than reverse out, into somewhere you can‘t (the line of moving traffic). Many people find that it takes them a few minutes to settle into ―driving mode‖ when they start their journey. Therefore it doesn‘t make sense to undertake a potentially high risk manoeuvre such as reversing when you are not concentrating fully. It is also easier to control a car going forwards, rather than backwards when the car is first started and the automatic choke is activated. The reduction in wear and tear on you and the car is useful too – plus the fact you can pull away immediately while the engine is cold, rather than labour it doing a reversing manoeuvre. From a security point of view, reversing close to an object such as a wall can make it more difficult for thieves to access your boot. If you need to exit a parking space quickly for personal security, driving out provides you with better acceleration and improved vision.

£110

Over the next week why don‘t you try reversing into a parking space? You may find it helpful if you have electric mirrors, to lower your left (nearside) mirror as this will provide you with a guide to your lateral position. Another option where all the spaces run in parallel rows is to line your car up with the space in front and reverse back in a straight line. This should automatically position you in the centre of the space. If you are interested in further information regarding the courses that we offer, you‘ll be able to find this information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk or Tel: 020 8996 9600 Safe Driving.
