The school is buzzing with all things Christmas as we approach this most special time of year. The children have already had the opportunity to design their own Christmas cards, which will hopefully have been printed by the time you read this, and are excited about sending them to their friends and family. We are also looking forward to our Advent Service and seeing Rev. Green up at St Nicholas' church on 2nd December.

The autumn term has simply flown by, during which time we were lucky enough to be selected by the new Co-operative Store in the village to be their first 'Community Champion'. This meant we were given a very healthy share of their profits, a massive £572 in total which will be used towards equipment for the classrooms and books. As a thank you, pupils including Oliver Ellis and Charlotte Evans put in a shift at the store and helped by stacking shelves and packing shopping for customers. Massive thanks to the Co-op for this generous gift. In fact, by signing up for a Co-operative 'Dividend Card', you can request that your dividends are donated directly to our school, which would raise even more funds that would benefit the school and ultimately the children.

Further funds can also be raised at the click of a button, and mainly for free, by registering at www.easyfundraising.org.uk. When shopping at major retailers online for instance Amazon, Argos, M & S, John Lewis, Sainsbury's, Tesco and E-bay through this site, a percentage of sales are donated to the school at no extra cost to you. Registering is easy and takes a matter of seconds.

On Monday 11th November 2013 Year 5 teacher Miss Collins and Parent Governer Mrs Duke accompanied members of the School Council to the War Memorial in the village to pay their respects on behalf of the school. They joined other members of the community for the service conducted by Rev. Green including The Last Post, followed by the 2 minute silence. Thank you to PCSO's Fahy, Frear and Fearon for helping the children safely cross the busy A161 after the service.

PHOTO GEORGE FIDDLER Santa is taking time out of his busy schedule and is dropping into school on 12th December. Each child will have the opportunity to visit him in his grotto to put in their requests and will receive a small gift (if they have been good of course!) Thanks to Mrs Brumby in FS2 for the loan of the play house in her playground which will be magically turned into Santa's grotto by his 'helpers'.

Pupils are busy learning their lines for this years Christmas play. FS2, Year 1 and Year 2 will be performing 'Hosanna Rocks', and Years 3 and 4 'What Christmas means to me'. THE EPWORTH COOKBOOK REVISITED During 1982, The Epworth Society collected some recipes from the Epworth Women's institute to commemorate the society's 1982's exhibition 'Epworth Has Made It!' They were presented as Epworth's recipes because all the contributors were required to be either Epworth Residents or natives if living away; and the recipes had to be original ones, created by the persons submitting them or handed down within the family.

As a dedication to those people who have left us and to those still living, each month we will reproduce some of those recipes cooked by a current member of the W.I. along with a photograph of the dish together with their comments.

In the last article I looked at some preparatory work to be done in the autumn. In this article I am going to focus on pruning your trees. I remember a question from Gardeners Question Time in which a lady asked for advice on what she could do to make her apple trees produce fruit. She said that her husband pruned the trees, but when asked when this happened she admitted that he took to the secateurs every week. Not surprisingly she had no fruit.

Here I am addressing the pruning of freestanding fruit trees rather than those with elegant shapes such as cordons and espaliers.

If trees are left unpruned they will still produce fruit although the size of apples might be increasingly small. The purpose of pruning fruit trees is to create a healthy tree – without diseased, damaged or dead wood – with a balance of new growth and a crop of fruit. As a general rule of thumb you should not be taking out more than a quarter of the tree’s wood at any time; if more than this is taken the tree may end up showing signs of stress.

The right time of year to prune your freestanding apple trees is when they are dormant – between November and February. You should avoid pruning them when it is frosty.

The first thing to do is to take a good look at your tree to see how it is growing and in particular at its new growth. Take a walk around your tree so that you can see its growth from different angles. You want to try to create and maintain a shape that resembles a wine goblet with the emphasis of growth and fruit production on the outside of the tree and leaving the centre relatively clear. Somerset apple growers talk of being able to throw a hat through the centre of a tree without a branch stopping it.

Using sharp and clean secateurs or saws, take out any dead wood; otherwise if left uncut dead wood will harbour disease. You should aim for a clean cut as close to the trunk or a branch as possible. Although in the past it has been considered important to treat exposed wood with a proprietary wound sealant, modern practice is to leave these cuts exposed.

The next step is to look at any branches that are crossing each other. These should be removed.

Once you have done that you are getting to the point of pruning new growth made on the tree. Before you do that it is important to recognise whether your tree grows most of its fruit on short stubby spurs (i.e. it is a spur bearer), on the tips of new growth (i.e. is a tip bearer) or combines these fruity habits (is a partial tip bearer). Most apple trees are spur bearers, but Worcester Pearmain is a tip bearer and Bramley is a partial tip bearer. The significance of this is that if you prune the ends of growth made this year on a tip or partial tip bearer you will be cutting off fruit buds.

Clearly you want to maximise the number of fruiting boats on your tree.

In the next article I will look again at pruning, including the differences between fruiting and growth buds.

Axholme Camera Club News Wednesday 6th November's meeting for Axholme Camera Club was our 3rd competition for 2013-14 and the subject of “Patterns and Texture� brought some very interesting and varied images. There were a total of 63 images made up of 41 coloured and 22 monochrome. Members entries were those which expressed the authors interpretation of either Patterns or Texture or both. The subject is not an easy one and needed the both creative thinking as well as good photography skills. The images depicted buildings, mother natures landscapes, architectural impressions such as brick walls, paving slabs and windows to name but a few of the large array of ideas which were projected.

Mr John Brady from Doncaster accepted the duties of Judge at short notice due to the unfortunate death of the original Judge. However, John's opening remarks were that this particular subject is not the easiest, but as the images were put up on the screen he was able to give good advice and commented on ways for possible improvement were required. The chairman Mr Geoff Trinder gave the vote of thanks from the members and expressed their appreciation for fulfilling a difficult task.

Next week Tuesday the 12th November we have a guest speaker, Mr Gianpiero Ferrari FRPS who specialises in Natural History so we are expecting to see some very exceptional images. One thing is sure Gianpiero will be passing on some of the lengths he goes to in order to get the best images possible. This is a great opportunity to see were and how the images you see in magazines are achieved.

The following week 20th November, we will be evaluating the images for our International competition with Australian Club, Castle Hill RSL Camera Club. This is an on going arrangement between the two clubs. We have two competitions per year with two judges, one by each club, our judge Mr Ian Pinn from Nottingham will be giving his views and comments. At the end of the night it is hoped to that all scores will be available and the winning club can be announced.

Christmas Festivities in the Isle of Axholme Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year, and with all of the upcoming festivities planned for this winter time, you’ll be spoilt for choice. With a 22% chance of a white Christmas, hopes are high and chestnuts are roasting on an open fire.

The first exciting event lined up for December is the mystical lighting extravaganza taking place in Westwoodside on Friday the 6th from 7pm onwards. From mince pies to mulled wine there is a wide array of Christmas treats to choose from. And for those of you who are feeling slightly more peckish, why not try a pork sandwich whilst you enjoy the jolly music provided by South Axholme Academy’s very own wind band. To top off the magical evening, Santa will be paying a visit and collecting letters from the young, excited children. This is definitely an event not to be missed!

Members of the public are welcome to attend the Wesley Memorial Church on Thursday the 19th of December for a heart-warming carol service. There will be music, mince pies, readings and performances to make the night one to remember.

Misterton Area Partnership wins Heritage Lottery Fund support for First World War Project A local history project that will commemorate local lives lost in the Great War, and is supported by Misterton Area Partnership (MAP), has received £9000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

The exciting project, Lest We Forget, Misterton and West Stockwith in The Great War, is led by local historian, David Seymour. Timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, the project will focus on local men (and, unusually, one woman) whose names are listed on the war memorials outside All Saints’ Church in Misterton and inside St Mary's Church in West Stockwith. The project will involve the communities of Misterton and West Stockwith in investigating these names – and the stories behind them - and what life was like in the two communities a century ago.

David Seymour said: “This is an exciting project for the villages of Misterton and West Stockwith, a fantastic opportunity for local people today to do some historical research that will have major international, national, and local significance next year. MAP will be putting on exhibitions and displays locally as well as publishing materials which will go to every household in the two communities to pay tribute to local men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice 'for King and country' 100 years ago.

“In order to do this, a local history group will be set up and I’d like anyone interested to get in touch.”

Trentside Federation School News – St Martin’s Church of England Primary School, Owston Ferry and West Butterwick Church of England Primary School As usual, both schools have been very busy….. St Martin’s Year 5/6 classroom now has a large shelter in it, created in connection with their World War II topic. Juniors at St Martin’s are enjoying this topic very much and it has brought them all kinds of enjoyable and practical learning experiences. On Wednesday 13th November, representatives from Englesea Brook Museum of Methodism in South Cheshire travelled over 100 miles to St Martin’s to present a 1940s experience. The Museum has developed several programmes for schools and the 1940s is their most recent addition.

They were delighted to receive an invitation from the school given the links with John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who was born in Epworth Rectory. Over the course of the morning, all the children in Key Stage 2 (Years 3,4,5 & 6) were able to handle genuine model trains from the 1940s and repair the railways after bomb damage. They also dressed up as 1940s bus conductors, used old coins and issued tickets. In the afternoon they learned all about Arthur Baddeley, a Stoke-on-Trent miner and Methodist local preacher, who helped to rebuild the village of Lidice in Czechoslovakia after it had been destroyed by the Nazis as a reprisal for the killing of a German Officer and about Rev Joseph Ellison Platt, a Methodist Minister, who was for five years the Padre in Colditz Prison in Germany. The Remembrance Acts of Worship (11th November) and the Remembrance Service in St Martin’s Church on 15th November gave us all an opportunity to reflect on those who have lost their lives serving their country.

West Butterwick School Junior pupils enjoyed a day’s visit to Scunthorpe C of E Primary School on Thursday 7th November. Our aim, through this partnership, is to bring the excitement of different cultures and religions into the classroom to increase our pupils’ awareness of what life for other families is like out-with West Butterwick village within a more diverse learning community, thus broadening their knowledge of the ‘local, national and global community in celebration of cultural diversity’. This was a very successful and thought-provoking ‘multi-cultural’ experience. The day started with a special Eid Assembly which featured dancing, Muslim prayers, Information about Eid as well as a quiz. Well done to Jamie Harris in Year 5 who won a prize in the quiz. A visit to a local Mosque was very interesting, as we met the Imam who demonstrated the ‘Call to Prayer’ and showed us the Qur’an. We learned about the rituals of washing before prayer, the times of prayer and the various parts of the Mosque. A delicious lunch was served in school – chicken curry, bhajis, samosas and salad. We made lots of new friends – adults and pupils alike. In the afternoon, there were various activities running such as Mehndi henna hand painting, designing a prayer mat and sampling more traditional dishes. Our thanks are extended to Scunthorpe C of E Primary School for a wonderful day. We hope to reciprocate in the Summer Term and already have many ideas of what we can offer our visitors from Scunthorpe.

School Councils have now met to consider their priorities for this academic year and have identified ‘Healthy Schools’ as a main project. Pupils are to design questionnaires and find out a little bit more about the eating habits and exercise regimes of their peers over the coming months. We are also thinking about the families affected by the Typhoon in the Philippines and will be organising some fund raising in connection with this devastating event. Recent fundraising projects have included Children in Need, Anthony Nolan and Royal British Legion. Thanks to all who have contributed. Special thanks to a group of girls from St Martin’s who, through their enthusiastic ‘Sponsored Skip’, raised £30.44 to add to the Children In Need collection (Charlotte T, Olivia, Abigail, Abbie, Romey, Hannah T, Lily and Maisie).

We have some very enterprising pupils at our schools! Another enterprising group is the Lifestyle Group made up of Tom Russell, Callum Gallagher, Ellis Clayforth, Bradley Turner and Ben Carby (now Year 7) who have won a prize for their efforts in connection with their ‘Owston Ferry Skate Park’ project. The boys have been invited to Hull City Hall to receive their prize. Congratulations to all concerned. We look forward to hearing what their prize is, in due course.

As this term progresses both schools are preparing for our involvement in the Methodist Christmas Tree Festival (Owston Ferry Chapel). We also have our Christmas Services in the final week of term. May I wish you all a Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

Westwoodside Church of England School News At the end of October children aged 3 – 11 took part in Maths Week at Westwoodside Church of England Primary School. Two themes ran for the week: Maths Games and Maths in Nature.

Children were really excited to play the Maths Games which were a mixture of traditional board games, new games and online games. One child told Mrs Delaney 'I loved all of them!'. The children were quite shocked when they discovered they had been learning whilst playing the games.

The Maths in Nature allowed classes to get outside and make good use of Lawson's Wood, which is a natural within our school. Despite the rain and wind all classes took part in an outdoor investigation. The investigations enabled the children to have lots of fun while engaging in talk about Maths. Investigations included pattern work, sorting, measuring, shapes and data handling. Staff were very proud of the engagement of children and the Mathematical vocabulary they were using whilst in Lawson's Wood.

Westwoodside C.E School Year 5/6 Passport Day! This term year 5/6 had 2 passport days where we learned about Greece.

In the year 6 classroom we did a mix of art and P.E. What we did in art was: make wreaths out of real leaves and leaves made of card glued on a long piece of paper. We also made mini hoplons (Greek shields) and Greek vases. For the hoplon shields, we used paper plates which we decorated with paint and pens.

On the other hand, in the year 5 classroom children made Greek thumb pots out of clay. We also did word searches and made our own Greek mythical creatures.We also glued a story line together and did a bit of research on the computer.

We also did a mini Olympics in year 6 which involved sports such as long distance running, short distance running, soft javelin, discus, triple jump and long jump.

MISTERTON based Five Villages First Responder group have received a donation of £686.64 from the Lincolnshire Co-op as part of their ‘Community Champion’ scheme.

‘Community Champions’ is Lincolnshire Co-op’s way of sharing profits with the community. Every time a member shopped at Misterton Co-op between June and September, a donation from the company went to the voluntary First Responder team.

Nominated Champions change every 3 months so hundreds of charities throughout the area can benefit.

The Community First Responders (CFR) give their time to be on call and are dispatched by the ambulance service following a 999 call involving a medical emergency in the local area. Because the CFR is nearby in the community, they can proceed straight to the scene and begin to give care to the patient until the arrival of the ambulance. The scheme is run on a voluntary basis and funded by local donations and fund raising events.

Therefore the support of the Co-op will help to boost the funds of this vital local organisation, helping to ensure it is able to continue it’s good work and purchase vital equipment.

CFR team members said they were “really delighted with the fantastic donation and would like to thank the Co-op for choosing them as ‘Community Champions’, with a special thanks to all the staff at the Misterton Store for their support.”

See and Be Seen Dear readers,, Despite the winter weather and the poor visibility we have to put up with, many drivers seem curiously reluctant to put their dipped headlights on.

Perhaps this is a hangover from the days when cars had only basic electronics: older drivers will remember that there was a risk that having too many electrical appliances on might prevent the battery charging and so lead to starting problems. But those days are fortunately long gone. The typical modern car is capable of running its headlights without a problem. So why the reluctance to light up?

If visibility deteriorates for any reason - not just darkness, but that familiar winter drizzle - you shouldn't hesitate to put your dipped headlights on.

A good rule of thumb is to make a point of turning on your headlights whenever you need to use your windscreen wipers.

You may feel that you can still see well enough, so why bother? But what you can see is not the whole story: you should aim to see and be seen. Other road users may not have eyesight as good as yours. And in gloomy conditions, you need to look particularly carefully in your mirrors before changing lanes. It may be that the driver who hasn't "lit up" is attempting to overtake you.

If the weather is foggy, by all means use your fog lights. But use your fog lights sparingly. If you leave them on after the mist has disappeared, you are causing a major irritant for other drivers.

Rear fog lights left on after they are needed when the mist has cleared are positively dangerous: they can also mask the visibility of brake lights and so lead to needless braking by the vehicles following.
