After the celebrations of the Queens Diamond Jubilee, the disappointment of the Euro 2012 and the exciting build up of Andy Murray at the Wimbledon Final we still

Haxey W.I enjoyed the Jubilee celebrations when Sandra Bishop provided a splendid carvery meal for 37 members in the Memorial Hall Haxey at our June meeting. Each member was given a coin as a memento of the occasion. Ken Bates retiring superintendant Police Officer, gave an insight into his work spending a Year with the New York Police in which he compared the different ways in which they worked.

His speciality being forensics and murder. A most interesting subject in which both sides benefitted.

He returned and set up a DNA in New York which hopefully will improve the quickness in solving the crimes in USA. A Strawberry Cream Tea , Raffle and Tombola will take place in Westwoodside Village Hall on Saturday 11th August 2.30pm - 4pm. Tickets £3.00 available from members. The Isles’ very own knight in shining armour Dean Headland, stepped in at the last minute to save the day for an NSPCC Fundraising Dinner by performing as the

piano accompanist to one of Yorkshires’ finest, 5none other than the one and only Lesley Garrett when her regular pianist became ill.

With just a few hours notice Dean stepped in to the breach to rescue the situation, something that was not overlooked by Lesley who announced the situation to the dinner guests for which Dean got a very big round of applause and a hearty Thank You. The NSPCC Fundraiser was an exclusive dinner event for the region’s top 20 richest people including Lord Kirkham. This is not the first time Dean has performed at short notice either, with less than 24hrs preparation he also performed at a Barnardos Firecracker Ball as an accompanist to Amy Diamond, for which he received the following glowing testimonial: “After intensive preparation and only a short rehearsal with Amy Diamond, one of the finalists in the BBC show ‘A Search for Dorothy’, Dean accompanied her during the Ball, with over 600 guests present at the leading Charity Ball in Yorkshire. His involvement greatly enhanced the Dinner entertainment at the Ball, and it is a testament to his enthusiasm and ability that he was able to perform so successfully with such a short period of preparation.’’

Misterton-based Five Villages First Responders have been the very grateful recipients of a donation of £155. Michael Hill, known locally as ‘Dabba,

recently celebrated his 50th Birthday. Money received as gifts have been donated to the volunteer group. Group Co-ordinator, Martyn Johnson, explained: “It was very kind of Mr Hill to think of the First Responders and for Michael to choose to donate his birthday money to us. We are extremely grateful for this very kind gesture. The First Responder scheme relies on donations and fund raising to cover our running costs and to purchase some of our equipment.”

The First Responders are volunteer members of the local community, who are trained to assist the ambulance service by attending potentially life threatening 999 calls that occur in the locality. They arrive quickly and start to give care to the patient until the ambulance arrives. Misterton Art Group, which meets at the Dovecote Café, invites entries for the jointly-run summer art exhibition on Saturday 25 August. There’s £300 in prize money. Entry forms with further details are available from the Dovecote Café, Grovewood Road, Misterton.

There’s also a competition for your artists of 5-7 years, 8-11 years, and 12-15 years. There are prizes for each class and for the overall best picture. Entries for both competitions must be submitted by Friday 24 August with the artist’s names (and age, if entering the junior competition) on the back. Pictures will be displayed over the weekend.

It was with great regret that I had to announce that Rescue Day 2012 (14th July) was cancelled due to spate weather and site conditions.

The Rescue Day Committee conducted a full site inspection on the 6 July, as public safety is of paramount importance, the decision to cancel this year’s event was made.

7 Lakes is situated on what is predominantly a clay based soil. The rainfall during the previous weeks and months caused the clay to absorb excessive rainfall and was consequently well past saturation point. The main display fields and Rescue Day car parks were inaccessible to vehicles and foot traffic and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

Although the weather was beyond our control may I take this opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the cancellation of this year’s event. Rest assured the decision has not been taken lightly and Rescue Day 2013 is already being planned.

Calls for service rose and centred around the B1396 including Pelfintax, Wroot Road, Idle Bank and Tindlebank and including private land owned by local farmers and others.

A considerable amount of work and liaison has been built between Neighbourhood staff and the owners and staff working on land to engage with them and to identify where offences and offenders are committing these acts and routes they use.

UPDATE; I have received no interest in the Horsewatch scheme which I was hoping to set up for the south ward initially and therefore if no one shows any interest in the coming month I will conclude that there is no requirement for such a scheme. Incidents remain at a low level, however with work on the land coming to one of its busiest times expectation for poaching, suspicious vehicles and persons is quite high. Countrywatch continues to hold regular meetings with engagement between agencies and landowners.

HORSEWATCH - We are also looking at whether there is sufficient interest to launch a Horsewatch scheme to run alongside and under the banner of Countrywatch. It would involve attending a meeting in Epworth held every 3 months and other benefits to be finalised if interest is sufficient. Westwoodside Park, Westwoodside. Information is being received that the young people who gather at this location are involving themselves in drinking alcohol and substance misuse. I would encourage anyone with any information regarding this to contact Humberside Police on 101 or the below named community policing staff. With the impending summer holidays from educational establishments and hopefully some fine summer weather youths congregating at this location should be reminded that any illegal activity will be dealt with but if they are behaving themselves then we would also like to engage with them in order to clarify with residents in Westwoodside that all is well.

Recent Issues. OFFENDERS CHARGE = After a recent spate of theft and burglaries in both the Haxey and Epworth area, two males have been arrested and charged. MOBILE PHONE = A driver was prosecuted when stopped by police having been using their mobile phone whilst driving. POSSESSION OF CANNABIS = A youth was given a cannabis warning after being out camping overnight in the Haxey area and using cannabis. ALCOHOL SEIZED = A vast amount of alcohol including vodka, cider and lager was seized from a number of under 18’s who congregated at Haxey Playing field on Saturday 30th June.

Neighbourhood Watch Groups Humberside Police together with North Lincolnshire Safer Neighbourhoods and Neighbourhood watch would like to request that more people consider setting up a Neighbourhood watch group in their area. A group can consist of just a few members from one particular street or can be an entire village. The Yorkshire and Humberside Neighbourhood watch organisation mission to encourage people to join to make the areas where they live, safe, friendly and pleasant place to be. Neighbourhood groups are owned and run by the people of their communities not the police, so the approach you take is entirely up to you. The most impressive achievements result from members looking closely at the needs of their communities and meeting them with innovative and creative thinking. HAXEY AND WESTWOODSIDE HERITAGE SOCIETY Thursday evening 14th June saw the Haxey & Westwoodside Heritage Society’s ‘1950s style Street Party’ celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Following weeks of discussion the committee spent a busy afternoon arranging and dressing the Westwoodside Village Hall for the occasion.

Tables were dressed with Union Flag covers, Serviettes and Balloons.

A selection of sandwiches, cakes and jellies were laid out and memorabilia displayed around the hall.

Opening the event chairman Jackie Starr welcomed members and Mr. John Roberts said Grace following which 39 members enjoyed the food, reminiscing past events and examining the memorabilia items on display, following the Loyal Toast each guest received a Society inscribed Jubilee mug as a memento of the occasion.

The evening was rounded off with singing of 1950s songs, Land of Hope and Glory, Rule Britannia and God Save The Queen all accompanied on the piano by Mrs Shirley Hinchliffe.

The Alzheimer's Society is the UK’s leading care and research charity for people with dementia and those who care for them.

There are 800,000 people with dementia in the UK with numbers set to rise by one million by 2021 In the East Midlands there are more than 56,600 people with dementia and it is predicted that this will continue to rise.

The Society’s fight for a better world for people with all types of dementia takes a wide range of forms. Through our network of 2,000 local services, we touch the lives of huge numbers of people every week, providing practical services and support for people with dementia and their carers. STATISTICS There are currently 800,000 people with dementia in the UK. There are over 17,000 younger people (under 65) with dementia in the UK There are 11,500 people with dementia who are part of black and minority ethnic groups.

One in three people over 65 will die with dementia. Alzheimer’s Society research shows that 800,000 people in the UK have a form of dementia, more than half have Alzheimer’s disease. In just ten years a million people will be living with dementia. This will soar to 1.7 million people by 2051 By 2021, there will be over a million people with dementia in the UK The proportion of people with dementia doubles for every 5 year age group.

One third of people over 95 have dementia.

60,000 deaths a year are directly attributable to dementia.

The financial cost of dementia to the UK will be over £23 billion in 2012.

Family carers of people with dementia save the UK over £8 billion a year.

Two thirds of people with dementia live in the community while one third live in a care home.

INTERTESTED IN A NEW LOCAL FOOTBALL TEAM IN WESTWOODSIDE? A new football team in westwoodside has been set up by local man Kevin Blow. The team will play in the Doncaster senior league Saturday afternoons men's league.

Although its a men's league the team is a majority of 17 year olds, due to the fact that after playing with their local league Junior football team in Scunthorpe, there was no where for these young lads to go to play at 17! Most of these young men now have a purpose and they are not on street corners!

I need help from anybody that can spare time like myself. I have spent a small fortune getting the team up and running and with thanks to Paul at the Duke William we were able to join the league.

A group of school children are taking part in Lifestyle 2012 with the Humberside Police. The group, "Alexanders Angels" include Hannah Piggott, Freya Trippett, Georgia Sitch and George Shapland. They are all 12 years old and year 7 pupils at South Axholme.

They have decided to help to raise £90,000 for Alexander Strong, a 7 year old boy from Epworth, who has been living with Neuroblastoma since he was four.

He had a large tumour removed last year but he is undergoing a second course of aggressive chemotherapy after another tumour appeared under his arm and spread across his chest. The £90,000 is needed for Alexander to go abroad for treatment, to either Germany or the USA. After already holding a stall at Epworth Primary summer fair, Alexanders Angels have organised a charity flower demonstration with all the ladies at Fountain Court Florist at the Wesley Chapel in Epworth on Wednesday 15 August, a charity darts night at the Old School Inn Public House on Saturday 18th August, a fun day with a raffle at the Old School Inn on Sunday 19th August and finally a sponsored walk on Sunday 2nd September. They want as many members of the community as possible to come together to help Alexander and his family.

We are appealing for anybody who wishes to run a stand (jewellery, cakes, preserves, crafts etc) at the fun day on Sunday 19th August. We are asking £20.00 for the rental of a stand and then whatever the stallholder makes on the day is theirs. Amateur Dramatics The Epworth Mowbray Players No.3 By Anthony Catherall

By December 1950 the momentum and popularity for each new production was in place and the audience came from all over the Isle.

The very popular comedy “Pride and Prejudice” by Helene Jerome was held on three evenings in early December. Pride and Prejudice had first been produced at the St James’s Theatre. London on 27 February 1936 and had received great reviews.

Gertrude Lees the producer was a hard taskmaster and could bring people to tears in her quest to obtain the best performance from her now budding actors. Performers produced what she asked of them and the audiences loved it. Costumes were now being obtained from as far away as Manchester by Messrs. S.B. Watts and Co, along with Misterton Amateur Dramatic Society. They even reduced the price of the quaint programmes to three-pence knowing that they could sell out each of the three nights on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday December 6th, 7th and 9th.

Visit any swimming bath and you can see a real mixture of people

- those watching from the gallery, saying 'I wouldn't be seen dead in the water - it's so boring'; those who stand on the side most of the time, dipping a toe in but not getting much further; those who are learning to swim, and taking their first nervous strokes; and finally there are the confident ones, swimming about like fish, knowing full well that the water will always hold them up.

Just as the toe dippers are not sure the water will hold them up and that they might easily sink, so these people wonder whether God really is there and whether it's worth the risk of finding out.

And there are those who are like the learner swimmers, feeling their way and starting to discover that God really is knowable, and that people who go to church are not really like they're portrayed on the TV, and enjoy themselves as much as anyone else.

Haxey Parish Council – draft Code of Conduct The Government has introduced a new mandatory Code of Conduct for individuals holding public office valid from 1 July 2012. The Code of Conduct has been adopted by North Lincolnshire Council (NLC), as required by Section 27 of the Localism Act 2011. NLC has a statutory duty under the Act to promote and maintain high standards of conduct by its Members and Haxey Parish Council agreed to adopt the NLC Code at its June meeting. The new Code is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the obligations that are placed on Members. It is the responsibility of individual Members to comply with the provisions of the Code as well as such other legal obligations as may apply from time to time. Parish Councillors should also comply with the following “Nolan” principles: Selflessness, Integrity, Objectivity, Accountability, Openness, Honesty and Leadership.

The Code applies to all Members of the Parish Council and all co-opted Members of any committees and sub-committees and applies whenever a person is acting in his or her official capacity. Specific new definitions of “interests” have been introduced and are briefly summarised as follows: a.

Disclosable Pecuniary Interests (DPI). DPI descriptions refer to any interest in the business of NLC or the Parish Council and are set out in detail in the Code. DPIs have to be notified on a Register which is published on the NLC and Parish Council websites and applies to both the Councillor and his/her Partner (which means spouse or civil partner, a person with whom you are living with as husband or wife or a person with whom you are living with as civil partners). A Councillor with a DPI in any matter discussed by the Parish Council shall not take part, vote, or be present during any discussion.

Failure to comply with these rules carries the potential of criminal sanction. b.

Personal Interest. Personal Interests are described as interests in any business of NLC and the Parish Council where a decision in relation to that business might reasonably be regarded as affecting a Councillors well-being or financial position or the well-being or financial position of a person to a greater extent than the majority of other council tax payers, ratepayers or inhabitants of the electoral parish, as the case may be, affected by the decision, or relates to or is likely to affect any interests registered as a DPI. Following declaration of a personal interest, participation and voting by Councillors during Parish Council meetings is allowed. c.

Prejudicial Interest. A Councillor who has a personal interest in any business of NLC and the Parish Council may also have a prejudicial interest in that business where the interest is one which a member of the public with knowledge of the relevant facts would reasonably regard as so significant that it is likely to prejudice the Councillors judgement of the public interest. A Councillor with a Prejudicial Interest in any matter discussed by the Parish Council shall not take part, vote, or be present during any discussion; however, there may be the opportunity in certain circumstances for a Councillor to make representations or answer questions.

Standards of Conduct are set out in the Code, full details of which can be read on NLC’s and the Parish Council’s websites. Any allegation received that a Councillor or Officer has failed to comply with the Code will be dealt with by the Monitoring Officer at NLC. Over 70’s Party Haxey Memorial Hall was the venue on Thursday 7 th June, for a Jubilee Edition of the annual Over 70’s Party, hosted by Haxey Parish Council and organised on their behalf by Jennie Eckhardt. A record 125 guests attended.

Cllr Ron Allcock was the official representative of the Parish Council and the local churches were represented by the Reverend Jeremy Green and Reverend David Leese.

Everyone enjoyed an excellent afternoon tea, catered, as usual, by Sandra Bishop and her staff, after which there were presentations to the oldest lady present, in the person of Mrs Doris Glew, and to the oldest gentleman, Mr Wilf Lindley who, in the past, served 60 years as a member of the Parish Council.

This was followed by a wonderful evening’s entertainment provided by the Jubilee Singers. The group was organised specifically for the occasion by Pam Leighton, Shirley Hinchcliffe and Ann Cooper and starred a number of well-known singers from popular singing groups which were disbanded a few years ago, as well as some new faces. It was particularly encouraging to see two very young singers in the group, Thomas Donaldson-Badger, who was in fine voice for his solo spots, and Kate Pilkington who, although still a school girl, thrilled the audience during her solos with a voice which would not be out of place on a Westend stage.

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee could not have been more sincerely celebrated anywhere in the country, and the happy occasion as well as the Parish Council’s generosity, will be long remembered.

Jennie Eckhardt The Parish Council again thanked Jennie for organising the event this year and approved the funding of the event for 2013.

Westwoodside Church of England School News...

On Monday 02 July, we were privileged and excited to be visited by Olivia Buxton, who was chosen as one of the Olympic Torchbearers.

Mrs Glover, one of our Teaching Assistants had kindly arranged for Olivia to show her Olympic Torch around all our classes and answer questions. Olivia, a student at South Axholme Academy, was nominated to be a Torchbearer because of her enthusiasm and leadership promoting sport both in and out of her school. She was certainly a great ambassador for South Axholme Academy and sport in general during her much appreciated time with us.

Olympic Days - National Sport Week On 29th June Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 all took part in a big 'Olympic Swap'. This involved the Year 2 children leading a variety of sporty events for the younger children. The children were allowed to wear their own sports clothes for the occasion. Each class had a turn at various Olympic type activities throughout the day such as running, jumping and throwing. All classes showed fantastic skills and behaviour. There was also a range of Olympic style craft activities for the children to complete. Each child received a special certificate and sticker for their efforts. Great fun was had by all and the weather stayed fine all day long for this enjoyable event!

Trentside Federation School News (St Martin’s Owston Ferry and West Butterwick C of E Primary Schools) There is always so much to squeeze in, amongst the usual curriculum studies at this late point in the Summer Term, such as Sports Afternoons and Leavers’ Services. However, somehow we have managed it…….

St Martin’s held an ‘Ancient Olympic Games’ on 29 th June. This ‘rounded off’ the children’s studies on the history of the Olympics. Events were; running, Chariot Racing (wheelbarrow races), horse racing (riding hockey sticks), discus, shot putt and long jump.

Winners were presented with traditional Olive Wreaths as they were in Ancient Greek times. Proud winners in this photo are Jack Foreman, Daniel Davey, Theo Maywood and Ewan Barker.

Sport has been a major focus these last few weeks although the weather has been against us! Sports Day trophy winners at St Martin’s were ; Harvey Hardman, Keane Bates, Sam Hattersley, Tiffany Frost, Ben Carby, Alexia Heighington, Alfie Temperton, Joseph Layton and Kristie Monument. For the first time ever this year, there were two of the three ‘House Teams’ with the same number of overall points.

Therefore, both Trentside (Blue) and Melwood (Green) share the trophy. Kinnard runners weren’t far behind either, so it was an evenly-matched event this year, that had us all on the edge of our seats! Thank you to all who helped to make this an enjoyable occasion, especially the PTA for providing those delicious strawberry teas!

On Thursday 5th July, St Martin’s Reception and Nursery visited the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. Luckily the rain held off for the visit! The children enjoyed observing all the different animals, learning about their habitats, diet and general characteristics.

A memorable learning experience this term has been ‘Enterprise Day’ – this project has been running for a year now and this was the third Enterprise Day. The children were split into groups with a child from every year group. Enterprise groups were led by Year 6 and their challenge was to create a new Olympic Sport. This involved designing a flag, writing instructions and rules, creating a poster with personalised slogan, culminating in a powerpoint presentation that was hopefully to persuade a panel of judges that theirs was the best new sport! The winning team was led by Eden Longland and the sport was ‘Hectic Hockey Holes’…. The intention now, if it ever stops raining, is to hold an additional Olympic Sports Event using all of these ‘Enterprise Sports’ !

We will be saying ‘goodbye and good luck’ to our Year 6 Leavers on 18th and 19th July ; Jacob Pearson, Holly Willerton, Charlie Hobson, Ryan Richardson, Amy Harris Kendrick, Bradley Garner, Taylor Garner, Saskia Heighington, Lauren Lindley, Sam Hattersley, Eden Longland, Ellie Watts, Tiffany Frost, Emma Hughes, Luke Longhorn, Amy Carter, Tilly Cartright, Lois Matthews, Ruby Naylor-Adamson and Nathan Dixon at the very end of term as well as teachers Mr Green, Miss Foreman, Miss Currie and Miss Dance. Doncaster Advanced Motorist Dear readers, Driving in heavy rain. Motorway spray caused by heavy rain, can cut visibility to zero. Lorries blast up an almost impenetrable wall of water that fills the air, coats your windscreen and wipes out your view totally for vital seconds. Plan wet-weather motorway overtakes carefully. Hang further back out of the spray and observe the road and traffic ahead. When conditions are most suitable (the route ahead is clear and straight), put your wipers on fast setting and move safely, quickly, and decisively past the lorry. With good planning your view should be impeded for only a fraction of a second at worst.

Heavy rain creates pools of water across the carriageway that can cause a car to aquaplane. This is where the car skims across the surface water and has no contact with the road. Aquaplaning affects your control by reducing the affect of steering and braking inputs. If you see water pooling or streaming across the road do not brake or accelerate, instead ease off the accelerator, grip the steering wheel firmly and try to steer straight ahead. Standing water will pull on the steering wheel and you may need to make corrective inputs when you hit Tarmac again.

Disengage cruise control. On hills diagonal streams of water often cascade across the carriageway. Be extra vigilant and slow down gradually in very wet conditions.

Braking distances increase hugely in the rain. Compensate by slowing down, looking further ahead, and increasing your following distance.

Driving in Fog, Avoid driving in fog whenever possible. Most motorists drive far too fast and much to close together in foggy conditions. As always, ensure you can stop safely within the distance you can see clearly.

Constantly ask yourself, if the next thing you saw in front of you was a stationary vehicle involved in an accident, would you be able to stop in time? Keep to the left-hand lane, if visibility drops below 100meters drive on dipped headlights and put your front and rear fog lights on as soon as you see fog developing, fog density can change in a matter of a few meters. You can go from a light mist to dense fog in a second so ensure you drive accordingly. Use windscreen wipers on the intermittent setting to clear the fine mist that collects on your windscreen. The strain of peering through thick fog quickly makes you tired. Take regular breaks. Take extreme care as you accelerate in preparation for any overtaking manoeuvre, never go ahead with a manoeuvre based on the fact that you can’t see any lights, not everyone will remember to put their lights on. Never be pressured into driving faster than you feel is safe by tailgaters, likewise don’t drive faster than you feel comfortable with, Avoid using main beam headlights in fog, the bright illumination reflects off the fog impairing your view by creating a wall of white in front of you. Consider using lowmounted front fog lights which will help you pick out the road markings or the verge at the edge of the road.

Don’t take any chances.

Remember to turn off your fog lights when the fog clears.
