Editors Letter....

April brings Mothers day and Easter and of course the Royal Wedding on Friday 29th April. I must admit this is my favourite time of

year. Not just for the chocolate eggs but it is a feel good month. The clocks have gone forward bringing lighter evenings; the spring flowers are in abundance; everything just seems so much better after the long Winter! On saying that i have just heard the dreadful news in Japan; we are so lucky in this country not to suffer such natural disasters!

There will be Royal Wedding Celebrations at 4pm at the Stephen Jones Community Hall on Friday 29th April. Everyone is welcome and there will be a prize for the best decorated hat!

I am hoping for some fantastic photographs! If anyone else is having their own celebrations for Kate and William‘s big day, perhaps a street party or picnic, please send some photographs so you can be included in your local Arrow!

On Thursday 28th April in the Stephen Jones Community Hall, Haxey, Mrs Pam Johnson will be presenting a slide show entitled ―Our First Visit to Jordan‖. This is a Christmas encounter with historical places of interest. Please come along and enjoy the warmth and fellowship.

Admission is FREE, but a collection will be taken during the interval.

At the February meeting of the Haxey & Westwoodside Heritage Society Chairman Mrs. Jackie Starr reviewed with the members present the society‘s plans for 2011 which would include a display of old photographs of the locality with a free strawberry tea included and open to non members, this will take place in the Westwoodside Village Hall on Saturday 30th. July.

The floods occurred due to the exceptional weather conditions at the time when severe Northwest winds combined with the Spring tides brought about a breach in the sea defenses with the consequent inundation of the local countryside.

Mrs. Leese recounted the effects on Sutton on Sea where her parents then lived and she herself was born.

Central to her talk was the discovery, in 2003, amongst her late father‘s papers were first hand reports of the flood made by pupils at the Sutton on Sea County Primary School.

By researching these events Mrs. Leese was able to trace many of the 23 authors and eventually bring about a reunion of them as well as producing a book of their accounts.

Giving a vote of thanks Mrs. Ann Cooper said that she was thankful not to have experienced such an event in Westwoodside though she did remember the village pond overflowing!

The meeting then closed with refreshments served.

The next meeting will be in the Westwoodside Village Hall at 7. 30pm on Thursday 14th April.

The presentation is 'Women of Steel' by Gillian Booth.

THE HAXEY AND WESTWOODSIDE HERITAGE SOCIETY The society is to hold a Coffee morning in the St. Nicholas Church Hall from 10am until 12 noon on Saturday 16th. April.

Along with a Tombola and the raffle of a well stocked ‗Picnic Hamper‘ a selection of bric-a-brac items from members ‗Spring Cleaning‘ and the Society‘s collection of local heritage books, video and DVD of life in the Isle in the 1970‘s will be on sale. Do come along for a browse, coffee and chat.

The Westwoodside Pond Light Committee would like to thank Dave Edwards and Kenbearne for their generous donation of a prize for the Pond Lights Raffle. The raffle was held in January 2011 and the evening was a great success. Everyone enjoyed themselves.

The Haxey W.I. March meeting was treated to an enjoyable talk by the guest speaker Mr Michael Gibbersleve, who described the true story of his life as an adopted son. He went into great detail of his journey in later life and the difficulties he en-counted when trying to trace his birth Mother. It was a very emotional and thought provoking night for all who attended.

Other items on the agenda for the future:

Coach Trip to Cambridge on the 19th May 2011. Pick up will be at 8.30 am from Haxey Church. Price is £12.50 per person and payment will be due when booking.

The Priorities for Axholme South are as follows:Priority One = West St and Parklands, West Butterwick, - Anti-social behaviour, Criminal Damage.

There has been criminal damage caused to motor vehicles in the West Street area of West Butterwick.

Also reports of theft from the Parklands area, where a hot-tub was stolen from a garden. No specific times have been identified for these crimes; however investiPC Constable 1169 Sally Jameson gations are on-going. The Neighbourhood team together with incident response staff are making regular patrols of the area and will deal with any offences and offenders committing crime.

Priority Two = St Martins Church, Owston Ferry – anti-social behaviour and Criminal Damage.

We have seen a recent increase in calls and concerns raised whilst Neighbourhood team members have been out on patrol that youths are congregating at the church at the top, the conservation area. There has been damage caused to the wooden gate which is of particular historic value and the damage caused cannot be placed to its original standard.

The amount of litter is minimal but alcohol bottles have been found however not in large numbers. If anyone has any information regarding the criminal damage we would encourage them to contact the police.

UPDATE;- There has been no further calls for service regarding this issue therefore this priority will be closed pending any further calls for service or information regarding the priority. Neighbourhood staff will continue to be present in the village and to actively engage with residents and people in the area.

Priority Three = Wildlife Crime.

Wildlife crime is of concern to farmers and landowners on the Isle of Axholme. It is important that every effort is made to reduce the opportunity for this type of crime to occur and to bring offenders to justice. The Neighbourhood team together with their uniformed colleagues recognise the importance of creating secure environments for farmers and landowners on the Isle of Epworth.

There is a Farmwatch/Countrywatch scheme running and together we are actively seeking ways to resolve this issue.

This is a continuing concern in the area, and there have been a number of positive responses from the Police in the South and Central wards. A number of persons have been identified as being connected to some of these incidents and have been reported for their involvement. This situation will continue to be monitored and positive action will be taken.

UPDATE – 6 males were stopped and checked with dogs just outside Epworth, and we have had a report of possible poaching in the Owston Ferry area, however the males were checked and verified, the call had been made in good faith.

Neighbourhood Action Team Meeting at Haxey Village Hall at 7pm where members from the Key Individual Network meet together and discuss local issues and agree on priorities for their respective ward areas.

Haxey Library Update Informal meetings between the Parish Council, Representatives of the Memorial Hall Committee and Head of Community Learning and Libraries North Lincolnshire Council (NLC) have continued over the last few months following the initial consultation process into the future provision of library services in Haxey. Throughout, the Parish Council has maintained its view that the status quo for Haxey Library should be maintained and the Council has approached the problem and the dialogue with NLC with this as its primary aim.

Options currently on the table are the introduction of a self-service kiosk library system, staffed by volunteers or provision of library services by a visiting mobile library unit. The Parish Council has accepted that NLC needs to make savings in this area of their budget and has investigated various options available to it in conjunction with the Memorial Hall Committee to keep the current service; however, despite carrying out a comprehensive costing exercise, between expenses incurred in the introduction of the self-service, volunteer staffed solution versus the retention of the current service with reduced hours, it has now become apparent that the gap between the savings needed to be made

by NLC and any alternative funds that may be made available locally was not achievable. Therefore, the Parish Council has concluded that at this point it cannot support NLC any further; however, it has advised the Principal Authority that it wishes to be kept abreast of developments in its provision of the library service to Haxey.

It is believed that once the final financial decisions on the provision of Library services in North Lincolnshire have been taken, NLC will now prepare to introduce the self service, volunteer staffed model at Haxey Library in April or May 2011.

The Great Poppy Party Weekend June 10th - 12th 2011 The Royal British Legion are encouraging groups and individuals to hold Poppy parties across the nation over the weekend of 10th - 12th June 2011 in celebration of its 90th birthday.

If you are interested in holding a fund raising event or making a donation in aid of the Royal British Legion‘s 90th birthday please contact the Parish Clerk.

Hood Field As mentioned in the last newsletter, the Parish Council discussed the issues arising from the creation of a quad bike track on part of the Hood Field. The track has in fact now been roughly reinstated but many residents are understandably very concerned about it possibly being remade in the future. Many letters have been sent to the Parish Council objecting to the track and the effect on the Hood. North Lincolnshire Council had advised the land owner that Planning Approval would be required.

At the February Parish Council meeting, it was resolved to write again to the NLC Planning Officer to arrange a meeting with him, and to support the field‘s return to its previous use. A meeting is also to be arranged with the landowner, to discuss residents concerns and the future of the land commonly known as the Hood Field.

The Parish Council also supported the idea of protecting the area for the future by making it a Heritage Site.

Haxey C of E Primary School Newsletter In the weeks before Christmas despite the bad weather the school managed to put on all the Christmas presentations the children had prepared. A collection was taken at each of these presentations and a total of £405-40 was raised.

On 23rd February the children gave a cheque for this amount to Mr Danny Phelan from the Bluebell Wood Childrens‘ Hospice. He thanked the school for their effort and said a few words about the work of the Hospice At the last Governors meeting the parking problems relating to the school were discussed and we would like to inform residents and remind parents of the following; PARKING PROBLEMS IN THE NOOKING AND WALK TO SCHOOL PLAN As I am sure all parents are aware, parking outside school and turning in the school gateway are causing major problems. Not only does it cause traffic flow problems but also there is a real danger of a child being seriously injured by a vehicle. There have already been some minor accidents and many near misses. Parents, staff and Governors would never be able to forgive themselves if a child was run over and we had not done everything possible to try and alleviate the problems.

M. P. IS ―OUT OF ORDER‖ Haxey Amateur Dramatic Society‘s next production is ―Out Of Order‖, another rip-roaring comedy by Ray Cooney.

The action, set in the lounge of a hotel suite near The Houses of Parliament, features errant M. P. Richard Willey, a Government Minister, intent on an adulterous affair with Jane Worthington, one of Her Majesty‘s Opposition‘s office staff. John Spittlehouse is the lustful Minister & Lynsey Yeardley his would-be lover. The discovery of a very much unwanted presence in the room, played skillfully by newcomer to the Haxey stage, John Brown complicates matters unmercifully. Richard calls on his hapless Parliamentary Private Secretary, George Pigden, to extricate him from the web of deceit.

Nigel Smith makes a welcome return as George, The over-amorous MP Richard Willey who soon finds himself in very hot water indeed.

(John Spittlehouse) admires Jane (Lynsey Yeardley) Things go from bad to worse with the appearance of Ronnie Worthington, Jane‘s angry young husband, played by Andrew Lee, also happily returning to the Society, & with the arrival of Pamela Willey, Richard‘s sophisticated wife, played by Sheila Morrey.

The other characters cannot be said to assist Richard get his wicked way, either. These are the often perplexed Hotel Manager (Joan Young), a hotel waiter on the make (Colin Emery), an Italian hotel maid with little English (Pat Ellison), and the domiWho is leading who a merry dance? Emery, Lynsey Yeardley, Nigel Smith, John Brown The play is produced by Mary Lenanton, a frequent and John Spittlehouse director at Retford Little Theatre, although this is her first full-length play at Haxey.

In April Christians celebrate Christ’s resurrection, for which there is considerable evidence – both from witnesses at the time and from circumstantial evidence.

However, the big question is - What difference does that first Easter Day make to us now some 2000 years later?

The Resurrection means that Jesus really is who he said he was, and it's the key piece in the jig-saw puzzle that makes sense of all that Christ said and did. He promised believers that they also would cross the gulf of death. The Christian faith doesn't try to pretend that death isn't a problem; what it says is that Jesus' Resurrection is the guarantee that God will similarly raise those who love and serve him.

However, the resurrection isn't just an astonishing event for which there is excellent evidence, nor is it just something to encourage us for the future what some people disparagingly describe as 'pie in the sky when you die'.

Because Jesus Christ really is alive, he can change our lives here and now, and we can experience him with us - for example, when we worship him, when we pray, when we talk to him, and when we tell him about our problems or joys.

Friends are great, and where would we be with without them; but Christ is the greatest friend of all because he can always be with us, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year – or 24/7 as it‘s fashionable to put it nowadays.

ST ANDREWS PARISH CHURCH – EPWORTH The parish church is a collection of architectural building periods extending from the 12 th century. The remnants of the Early English Period of architecture (1189-1272) can be seen in the Chancel Arch and the aisle arcades. Between 1272 and 1377 the architectural age was the Decorated period. This is represented by the window in the west end of the north aisle that is now used as a choir vestry; also the windows of the chancel are of this period. The lion motif of the Mowbray family can be seen on the West Wall inside the North Porch. Between 1377 and 1547 was the Perpendicular Period. The Tower, the clerestory and many windows and battlements constructed over the aisles, were built in this period. The Priest’s Vestry is also of this period. During the Civil War, fanatics desecrated the church so that only the walls were left standing. The church was rebuilt from the ruins with alterations. For instance the Chancel was made smaller. There were two chantries at one time, now the organ occupies one and the other at the end of the south aisle has disappeared.

In 1868 the church was renovated. The Nave was re-floored, the north and south aisles were re-roofed and a new pulpit, altar and altar rails were installed.

Within the church are a number of objects of historic interest. There are two chairs that date from the 16th and 17th centuries. There is also the old parish chest from the 16th century where parish records were kept together with a 17th century Chalice, presented to Samuel Wesley The Church Register dates from 1538 showing baptisms, weddings and funerals as ordered by Thomas Cromwell, minister of HenryV111. There was a Mazor Bowl dating from 1525 made out of wood but this was sold in 1947 for £1000,00. The church has eight bells, of which were recast in 1937 together with a Coronation Bell (note F). The grave of Samuel Wesley is of obvious historic interest. In 1742 when revisiting Epworth, John Wesley offered to take the morning services at the church, but the curate, Rev. John Romley, rejected his offer. In the evening, however Wesley took his father’s tombstone as a pulpit and preached to a vast crowd. In the first decade of the 21st century Restoration was extensively carried out.

WESTWOODSIDE Church of England SCHOOL On Thursday 1st March at 11 am, children in the Foundation Stage made lots of noise and had lots of fun at Westwoodside Church of England School taking part in ‗I CAN‘s Chatterbox Challenge 2011‘ Guinness World Record TM attempt.

Children had to sing nine verses of Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes! Many children were also sponsored to raise money for children across the country with communication difficulties.

The challenge provided a fantastic opportunity to get parents and carers joining in and supporting their children‘s communication development at home. All the children who took part received a ‗I completed I Can‘s Chatterbox Challenge 2011‘ sticker.

On Shrove Tuesday Years 1 to 6 took part in sponsored pancake tossing (not real pancakes!). All the children took part in a sporting and positive way whilst raising money for the P.T.A.. Thank you to everybody who has sponsored their efforts and to the parent helpers who spent the morning counting the number of tosses!

Watoto Children‘s Choirs have travelled internationally since 1994 as advocates for the estimated 50 million children in Africa, orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS, war, poverty and disease.

Accompanied by a team of adults, the choir presents Watoto‘s vision and mission through their stories, music and dance. Watoto choirs act as ambassadors to raise awareness about the plight of the orphaned and vulnerable children of Africa.

Each of the children in the choir has suffered the loss of their parents either through war or disease. They live in Watoto children‘s villages. The experience gives the children exposure to other cultures broadening their worldview. It also gives them confidence and boldness and helps them rise up out of their own situations of sadness and despair.

February got off to a good start at Axholme Camera Club with a very interesting presentation by Jim Hartje ARPS. Jim explored the creative side of his photography with Photography-Fine Art or Creative Expression' which led to a lot of discussion.

' My

Then came Richard Egan-Headley FRPS who demonstrated how to take the perfect portrait. Amy, daughter of member Chairman Roberts, on her first assignment as a model, patiently sat through the evening under the floodlighting while Richard photographed her from different angles, talking all the time about the procedure, as well as telling amusing anecdotes. It was a very useful and educational evening and many members went away ready to have a go themselves.

The first competition of the year had the subject of Birds, and was ably judged by the current Chairman, Geoff Trinder ARPS, himself a keen Nature photographer, particularly interested in birds. Forty-two members arrived, most with prints for the competition, and the standard and variety was high, making a difficult job for Geoff. His eventual choices were Clour Section, Jean Goodburn, of Hatfield scored 20 and 19, Angie Skidmore19 and 19, George Fiddler, Owen Wressell and Dave Neale 18 each. The Mono Section winners were Angie Skidmore 20, Jean Goodburn 19, Guy Myers of Gainsbough a new member entering for the first time,18, David Nelmes 19 and George Fiddler 19.

As member Ken Thompson had attained the age of 80 years on the Monday of that week, Chairman Roberts made him a beautiful birthday cake decorated with an artist's palette and brush, as Ken is also an accomplished artist as well as an excellent photographer. The delicious fruit cake was divided up among the members at the tea break.

Sandy Furniss FRPS made a return visit to talk about 'Moments Through My Lens ' and once again overwhelmed his audience with the quality of his work. He explained how he gets such superb landscapes and nature photographs with a view to helping members improve their own. This pleasant, quietly spoken Scot received resounding applause and requests to return again with more of his fantastic work.

Two dates for your diary, an evening OPEN to all on Wednesday 6th April is a presentation by Allan Rowsell 'California Dreaming'. This promises to be a fascinating evening as Allan's undoubted photographic talent combined with his ability to find interesting and unusual places usually produces an excellent presentation.

Coming up on Wednesday May 4th will be another evening OPEN to all, as Lee Davis LRPS and Alan present some of their wildlife photography.

Both these evenings will be in Haxey Church Hall starting at 7.30pm with a small charge of £1.50 to include refreshments.

At Gary's right, opposite Barry, sat Larry. When the waiter came for their orders, Larry and Barry ordered steak. Gary chose fish, and Harry (who likes to be difficult) ordered like this: "Unless the man at the left of the man opposite the man who ordered fish is not having what the man across from the man at the right of the man at my left is having, then I'll have what the man across from the man at the right of the man opposite me ordered. Otherwise, bring me the fettuccine Alfredo."

Assuming "right" and "left" is from the viewpoint of the diners, what did Harry order?- What he essentially said to the waiter was: "If Larry ordered the same thing as Gary, I'll have steak." Since Larry ordered steak and Gary ordered fish, Harry does not get steak.

Doncaster Advanced Motorist Speed and Acceleration Dear readers, Knowing when to use your car‘s power and when to take it easy are skills which every driver needs to master. It isn‘t about driving around at a snails pace, its about using power and acceleration wisely, smoothly and safely.

Power is nothing without control. This is true of all aspects of driving and a maxim the Advanced Driver lives by.

A powerful sports car is at best wasted and at worst deadly in the hands of the amateurish or lazy driver.

Never abuse your car‘s power. Instead learn how the car delivers its power then use the experience to make the most of it by driving as safely, smoothly, and as progressively as possible. Firm acceleration is sometimes necessary –when joining a motorway or when overtaking for example but to make the best use of your car‘s power band takes practice and an understanding of the way it delivers its torque (the power that creates acceleration).

Being in the wrong gear at the wrong time can ‗bog‘ the engine down, restricting the car‘s acceleration and possibly putting you in a hazardous situation. It‘s important to learn which part of the rev band delivers the most torque and acceleration. This will ensure you select the right gear for the conditions and the job in hand.

Test your sense of deceleration.

Here‘s a useful way to test your sense of deceleration. The next time you‘re driving along the road at the national speed limit and see a 30mph or 40mph speed limit sign ahead, try to time the point at which you ‗lift off‘ the accelerator so that the car reaches the speed limit sign at the correct speed, without the need to touch the brakes.

On twisty roads you can take this technique a stage further by managing the speed of the car between the bends with accurate use of the accelerator. This £110 will limit the amount of braking you need to do, producing a smoother, more satisfying drive.

With smooth road surfaces and powerful, quiet cars, it can take serious concentration not to creep over the speed limit.

Advanced Driving is not about driving slowly. A driver who tootles along at 50mph on a busy motorway or a clear country road can be just as dangerous and frustrating as a speed demon. The skilled Advanced Driver looks to make good progress whenever possible by carrying out welltimed overtakes; with smooth, progressive controlled acceleration.
