Welcome to the June 2015 issue of The Hatfield Arrow.

This month we are re-launching our Facebook page. Please visit it if you get chance and like and share to help spread the word. Joining in with Thorne Camera Club At the Annual General Meeting Thorne Camera Club elected the following members to serve on the Committee for the forthcoming year: David Ulyett Chairman, Pete Spate Treasurer, Lynda Ulyett Secretary, with Frances McIntosh, Linda Spate and Jim Howard also on the Committee. All are happy to be contacted with any questions regarding the club. Many thanks are extended to retiring members John Marshall, John Chapman and Elaine Snowden for their invaluable help in the past with the hope that they may serve on the Committee again in the future.

For the 1940s weekend, a display of 40s style photos was arranged in the Methodist Church Hall, some genuine 40s photos, some from last year's 40s weekend, and others printed nostalgically.

There was a good response from the public who joined them, and chose their favourite picture. A draw from the votes picked J.Sullivan as the winner of a 40s style box of chocolates. Camera Club members entered the spirit of the occasion, dressing in 40s style clothes. The display is now in Thorne Library.

Recently, members were asked to consider each other's photos and act as judge, assessing points for each one. This demonstrated the difficult task of visiting judges when faced with a quantity of photos, commenting on, and marking them. The members had never been so quiet for so long as they deliberated! - taking great care to study each one before making their decisions. Adjudicators calculated, and the highest scoring entries (colour section) were from David Ulyett, new member Mel Brown, Allen Denby, Bill Mitchell and Frances McIntosh. In the mono section, high scorers were Allen Denby, Frances McIntosh, Linda Spate, Alan Pickersgill and Steven Thomas. Well done to everyone taking part.

Now summer is almost here, Camera Club members are out and about with their cameras, taking photographs, improving skills and enjoying good company. The Yorkshire Museum of Mining at Caphouse Colliery near Wakefield was one such visit, although members declined the opportunity to go underground. One, having been a miner himself, said he'd been underground enough, others were put off as cameras are not allowed for safety reasons.

However, the underground tour is very interesting and well worth doing.

Carpets of bluebells at Melton Woods tempted members out.

Bluebells are notoriously difficult to photograph well, but expert guidance was on hand and a very pleasant evening was enjoyed.

Also, at Eastrington Nature Reserve, members shot some wildlife, with their cameras of course!

These visits are ideal for getting to know and use your camera with more experienced members always willing to help and advise. In response to those people who have visited the club but felt too lacking in basic camera and editing skills to become members, this is an ideal time to join the club. The club accepts members no matter how limited their experience, and many beginners have improved a great deal since joining, due to the summer outings.

70th ANNIVERSARY OF VE DAY 1945 A colourful Street Party was held in Hatfield Church on Saturday afternoon 10 May to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of VE Day 1945.

Long lines of tables were set up around the church decorated in red, white and blue and yards of bunting and flags were hung around the pillars and walls of the building.

The food for the Tea Party was provided by everyone on a Bring and Share basis so there were plenty of sandwiches, slices of bread and dripping, sausage rolls and buns for everyone who came and what was left over was taken to the M25 Centre for the Homeless in Doncaster.

Music during tea was from the 1940’s, Glenn Miller and the Swing Bands etc. The entertainment for the afternoon was provided by Brian Waterhouse giving a heartfelt and hilarious recitation of Stanley Holloway’s monologue ‘The Battle of Hastings’ about ‘ Arold on his ‘orse with his ‘awk in his ‘and’ assisted by his wife, Margaret, as ‘prompt’ ! Followed by Andy Green reading extracts from some of Winston Churchill’s famous wartime speeches in a very close imitation of Churchill’s voice, which was extraordinarily evocative of the speeches heard on the radio throughout the War. Cath Watson read from a scrapbook complied by Ken Piper in 1989 for the Hatfield Church ‘!

940’s Evening’ in the Barn Field. The selection of readings described the conditions for the population during the Second World War eg, collecting aluminium from homes for the making of the Spitfire and Hurricane planes, food rationing and clothes rationing.

A big Sing Song of songs from the War years brought the entertainment part of the afternoon to a close with everyone joining in with gusto and flag waving.

The afternoon was brought to a close with a short Service of Remembrance and Commemoration by Rev Liz Turner-Loisel who poignantly brought all the sacrifices made into perspective with a timely reminder that we owe our freedom to the many who gave their lives during the Second World War. Reflecting on our School Staff.

Welcome to our next report. Sadly, this report covers three members of our school community who have left us. Year 6 are writing about our wonderful teaching assistant and school gardener called Mrs Jordan who has left us to go and work at Sainsburys. Year 5 are reporting on Mrs Hoyle who was our Year 5 teacher and has been teaching at our school for a long time but has retired.

Mrs Corfied, our sewing teacher, is leaving us at half term to retire and look after her grandchildren.

Read on to find out more about our amazing adults.

Our Mathematical Mrs Hoyle Mrs Hoyle has recently left Travis St Lawrence Primary School. She felt like retiring after 36 years; however she will still be visiting us. We all miss Mrs Hoyle very much because we really enjoyed working with her. She explained a lot about maths and we all learnt so much from her. Mrs Hoyle was an amazing at teaching, she was firm but fair and we all liked her. We all were very sad that she had to leave. She decided to retire at the Easter holidays and received many gifts from members of Sycamore Class and staff at the school. We have some quote from the adults and children. Dennis said, “She boosted me with my maths work.” Taylor said, “She cared for everyone even when they were not in her class.” Mrs Cousins said “We will really miss Mrs Hoyle, she was wonderful to work with and touched so many of our lives.” Thank you for all the outstanding years Mrs Hoyle.

Our Green fingered Mrs Jordan Sadly, another member of our staff at Travis St Lawrence has left us; however she still comes in temporary. Mrs Jordan was our main gardener and won the school lots of gardening trophies; such as Doncaster in Bloom and Yorkshire in Bloom. She took us for skills workshop and taught us how to keep our garden in good condition. Mrs Jordan was here for nine and a half years which is an amazing time. She was an amazing help and was great at everything. We have some quotes from the adults and children. Aimee said “Mrs Jordan was very helpful and caring”. Poppy-Sue and William said that she was an amazing gardener. “Mrs Jordan was an absolute gem to work with and will be sadly missed by Year 6” said Miss Hilton.

Olivia and Harvey Creative Mrs Corfield Unfortunately, we are going to be losing another one of our amazing teachers; Mrs Corfield. Mrs Corfield was an extraordinary seamstress. She worked at Travis St Lawrence for 20 years and she is retiring to spend time with her grandchildren. We all enjoyed the time she spent with us and the adults. In Year 3, we learned how to do running stitch and back stitch. Mrs Corfield did the Easter and Christmas craft clubs when it was that time of the year and they were spectacular. We wonder who our new sewing teacher is going to be? We don’t know who could replace Mrs Corfield because no one can replace her. Sidonie said, “she inspired me with her sewing.” Jessica said, “She helped to build my confidence in my work.” Mr Heyes said, “She helped children develop essential life skills and prepared them well for the tough world ahead”. Mackenzie and I hope her and her grandchildren have a happy life.

Ava and Mackenzie We wish them all good luck for their new adventures and hope to see them soon. Thank you for reading our report.

North East Doncaster Citizen’s Advice Bureau I bought a new mobile phone six months ago, and I used the signal checker on the website, but I never have any signal at home or work at all. I want to cancel my contract and go back to my old mobile company as I always had good service with them, but my new provider says I’ll have to pay all 18 months of the contract remaining if I want to cancel. I can’t afford to pay that all at once and a new contract, but I also can’t have a mobile phone that never works when I need it. What can I do?

Most mobile phone contracts last 24 months, but often they don’t specify minimum standards of service, so it can be tricky to get out of them without paying a hefty fee. Your best bet is to keep a log of times when your phone doesn’t work. Then contact your service provider and ask them if there is anything they can do. This might solve the problem without you needing to cancel.

It might say something in your contract about how much reception you should get: if so you should be able to cancel the contract without paying. Unfortunately, you can’t rely on what an online coverage checker will say as they’re just a guide and will only ever give an idea of the average signal someone can expect outside in that area.

If the phone doesn’t work in your house or workplace but does work outside, the problem might be with those buildings themselves. In that case you wouldn’t normally be able to cancel without paying. It might be that the signal just isn’t strong enough, so you should ask your provider to carry out a signal strength check.

If there’s no signal in your whole area, you might be able to cancel under the Supply of Goods and Services Act. Very poor service most of the time might mean the network is breaking your contract.

Some contracts have terms and conditions which mean they’re allowed to not provide service sometimes, so you need to get advice to see if this applies to you.

Before anything else, contact your service provider, share any evidence of poor service and explain why you should be let out of your contract early. They might well allow you to cancel.

Holidays & Pets As the summer holidays approach it is always wise to plan ahead and decide whether your pet is to accompany you or not and hopefully avoid any last minute disappointments that may spoil the enjoyment of your time away.

KENNELS Always book well in advance as kennels/cattery get very busy at peak times.

Check vaccination records to make sure they are up to date. It is worth noting that good kennels will also insist on Kennel Cough immunisation for dogs.

Arrange to take bedding, toys or something that smells of home to help your pet settle in.

If your pet is on a specific diet or receiving medication ensure that you have sufficient stocks to cover the length of their stay and inform your vet of your pets boarding arrangements.

HOME If your pet is travelling with you in this country it would be wise to consider: Is your pet used to travelling in the car/carrier for any length of time, if not take some time to getting your pet used to short journeys first.

Consider buying a pheromone spray/collar such as Feliway/Adaptil to help them cope with the trip.

ABROAD Should you be taking your pet abroad and want to bring them back into the UK you will need to obtain a Pet Passport and arrange the following: Visit the DEFRA website for guidance and full instructions at www.gov.uk.take-pet-abroad.

Prior to travel ensure your pet has been microchipped and in the case of dogs inoculated against rabies.

Check your destination for diseases such as heartworm, tick borne diseases and leishmaniasis so preventative medicine can be obtained.

Moorends Stingers Under 8’s

had a fantastic time taking part in a football tournament at Butlins, Skegness. They played 6 matches in total, winning five of them, drawing one and only losing one.

Every player in the team worked hard in every game. Frankie Mason, goalkeeper, made some fantastic saves throughout the tournament, Daniel Walton and Taylor Richmond were both nominated by the referee for the ‘Special Moment’ award as each of them scored a fantastic goal and Alistair Breckell scored an amazing goal from a corner kick which impressed all the supporters and coaches!

Other members of the team included Alistair Robertson who was very strong in defence, Owen Heaslip who was also a strong defender and a good all round player and Scarlett Stent who scored the winning goal in the last game ensuring that the team were placed 9th out of 48 teams. Each player received a trophy at the award ceremony which was presented by Bryan Robson, former Football Manager and England and Manchester United player.

The Team coach and manager Richard Breckell, along with all the parents, grandparents, family and friends that went along to support the team, were all very proud of the way the team played and of the way they behaved towards other teams and officials.

Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School Yet again we have some amazing topics and activities taking place in school.

Firstly, Year 6 pupils are sitting their SATS exams this week. They will face lots of tricky questions and the teachers are looking forward to seeing how much they have learned in school from when they started in FS2 to Year 6. We have had to make sure we are very quiet so that they can concentrate really hard.

Later this month, our cross country runners, who will be representing our school in the Doncaster Schools Cross Country, will run at Hill House School. We wish them lots of good luck and Mr Osborne will be there on the day to watch and encourage the runners.

We’ll report the results next month.

Years 5 enjoyed a lovely school trip to Tropical World in Leeds. We saw lots of different creatures such as Toxic Frogs, Tarantulas and a variety of butterflies. We all enjoyed the trip and were especially excited about the gift shop!

As part of our Beast Creator topic in Year 5, we have constructed a mini beast mansion. It is built out of a tyre, wooden pallets, pieces of wood, bricks and plant pots. Thanks go to Charlotte’s dad for the pallets!

Year 3 went on a fascinating school trip to Yorkshire Museum in York last week. They saw lots of interesting artefacts and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Our Nursery children took their first school trip today and FS2 are due to go on theirs tomorrow – we’ll let you know how they got on in the next issue.

Finally, there will be a DJ coming into our school to run a disco on the Thursday 21st May. LETS PARTY!!!

We are all very excited about this.

Hatfield Community Library Author Event

Our next author event will be on Tuesday June 30th when Debbie Taylor will come in to talk about her book “Herring Girl,” which is an historical crime mystery set in the North East. I am reading it at the moment and find it very interesting. I know there are a lot of people from the NE in the Hatfield area so come along for a taste of “home.” She will be accompanied by the Poet John Wedgwood Clarke who will read some of his poems. He teaches at Hull University so is an honorary Yorkshireman. Both can be found on-line.

POA Learning. The library is now a contact point for POA Learning. This is a series of courses which are free if completed. It is a paper rather than on-line course. For details call in at the library to see the display.

Classes

Yoga Tuesday 6:30-8pm Wednesday 3:30 – 5pm Wednesday 6:30-8pm Pilates Monday 6:30-8pm. This class has really taken off now but there are still a few spaces left. Please bring a mat if you have one or a blanket if not. Both the Yoga and Pilates cater for all abilities of fitness.

We have been pleased to welcome Hunger Hill feeder schools to the library for the Greenaway Illustration Award Scheme. Crookesbroom School also paid us a visit for story time. It was lovely to have the library full of well behaved children who were clearly enjoying themselves.

We are collecting DVDs to sell to raise money for the library. The DVD s must be original, in good condition and in the original box. If you have any could you please drop them off at the library?

We also hope to hold a Summer fund raising event so look out for information about this.

We need money for improvements and to pay for the adult and children’s activities.

You may have noticed how sparkly clean the windows are. We now have a window cleaner who comes fortnightly.

I suppose I may have mentioned (once or twice) that I am a big fan of village life. I have come to the conclusion there is more going on in these small hamlets than even the bigger towns or their suburbs.

During one of my many jobs I found myself living in a small Dales village which lay on a busy main road, connecting Skipton to Settle and then beyond to the Lake District. I had rented a small cottage on the busy main road that nestled deliciously between the local paper shop and a butcher’s shop. Every morning like clockwork I would depart for work, calling into the former for my Daily Mirror. As well as supplying the village with the latest news, sweets and cigs, the shop would also serve as a busy communication hub locals parking themselves on a small bench that lay beside the counter. More often than not there would be an elderly woman sat busily knitting away, not saying anything apart from a rare hello or vague query about the weather.

One morning I found myself unusually late for work and in my haste neglected to pick up some notes that I had taken home the previous night.

As I stood at the newsagent counter I realised my mistake and decided to pop back and quickly pick them up. I unlocked the front door, leaving the key in the lock whilst I ran upstairs to pick up my notes. Eventually my notes were located and I quickly ran back down, snapping shut my front door behind me. But as I turned I realised the key was no longer there. I stood there for a brief moment scratching my head. I scanned the floor, then the door, back to the floor. Nothing! I re-traced my actions in my head asking myself if I had really had left it in the lock? Yes, it was definitely there when I entered, I even went in and out of my cottage looking here, there and everywhere, still no sign! It became apparent that my key had been stolen during the brief time I was in the house. I was now in a state of panic as not only was I late for work but I was also missing my front door key which, with no spare, would mean an un-locked front door all day. Thinking on my feet, I realised I could use the bolt lock on the inside of the front door and I could then depart via the rear patio doors. Yep, cracked it, that was a far safer option considering the secluded and private shared area at the rear. I gingerly closed the patio doors behind me and appeared back on the main road via a small alley that lay beside the newsagents.

For a second time I entered the shop. The Mirror wasn’t on my mind this time though, I wanted some solidarity and a sympathetic ear. I explained my predicament to the owner and requested her keep an eye out for any strange characters lurking with dishonourable intent. As I explained the mystery – adamant the key had been stolen - I was unaware of the elderly lady in her usual position, knitting with needles going faster than chopsticks at a Beijing lunch. After sympathetic noises from the shopkeeper, she added that she knew a local locksmith who would happily fit a new lock after I had returned home from work. Later that day, as planned, I returned home to find the locksmith fitting a new lock and ending my fear of being robbed. I’d dodged a bullet, thankful the situation had been no worse.

Later the following week I (once again) departed groggily for work and noticed a copy of the parish magazine had been delivered. The mag would regularly feature local news stories, such as Mrs Miggins’ cat being stuck up a tree, or highlight parish events and carry the odd advertisement. I stood in my front room and read the following headline: “Local man has key stolen from front door”. Snappy I know, but followed by a detailed editorial of the events of the previous week. They even had the name of the locksmith and where I worked. I was puzzled. I never reported the crime and I hadn’t discussed it in the local pub after one too many beers. I scratched my perplexed head again. Maybe my good neighbour had chosen to leak this heinous crime to the local press? Perhaps the village was caught in a ‘1984’ type Big Brother scenario! Would I have to become Yorkshire’s answer to Winston Smith?

As I entered the papershop I decided to confront the proprietor to ascertain my suspicions were indeed correct. I approached the counter and as I handed over my money I politely enquired how the incident could have made into the Parish magazine? The owner blushingly admitted that the village’s very own “deep throat” was the elderly lady often seen knitting on the bench. She explained the woman would sit there for hours on end some days, silently listening for local events, bits of gossip, village news and any potential scoop to ensure a juicy edition of the parish mag. I smiled to myself at the revelation and decided I would have a bit of playful fun and get my own back on our very own Mazher Mahmood. Sure enough, the following week as I entered the shop the lady was beavering away with her knitting needles like a crochet ninja, ears subtly pricked in eager anticipation of everyday conversations. I purchased my paper and gleefully announced I thought the village was lovely and I could see just why it had been chosen by

Below are some excerpts from village notice boards that I have come across on my walks with Mr Mole. I hope some of you will understand just why they brought a smile to my face and reminded me once again that sometimes those sleepy hollows can sometimes (perhaps) be dens of pure iniquity.

Bubwith - Mr Banthorpe reported that her husband had gone missing for 3 hours on Saturday 28th March. The committee heard how he had been wearing his suit at the time. However, he had now returned safe and well.

Breighton (2 miles away) - Mr Peters and Ms Lindley had reported seeing what appeared to be a strange elderly man dressed in ill-fitting clothes, loitering around the village on the 28th March between the hours of 10am and 2pm. Both observed him until he walked off in the direction of Bubwith.

The parish council declined an application from the widow of Mr Arthur Spencer for a bench to be placed alongside the river Derwent as it could result in a lack of suitable space. Mr Hardacre commented that “if we allowed this one where would it stop?” Mrs Francis had responded more than likely Howden as this was in another Parish.

HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY The Society held its May meeting on Tuesday 5th at Hatfield Woodhouse Working Men’s Club. As a change from its usual format, the Society had a plant sale. Members and guests were invited to donate their spare plants, and then to look over the stalls before purchasing some others.

The event was opened by our President and Chairman, Mr John Brown, who auctioned a large potted camellia get the proceedings under way. There followed an hour or so of flowering plant and vegetable seedling buying, resulting in almost all the available plants being sold. The proceeds of this event will go to the Society’s own funds.

The next meeting is on Tuesday June 2. We are having a guided walk around Medieval Thorne led

by Kate Harrison. If you came to Kate’s tour of Hatfield last year you know we are in for a treat.

Meet at the Working men’s Club at 6-30 pm, or at the car park opposite Thorne Church at 6-45pm.

Please wear stout shoes.

On Saturday 13 June, the weekly coffee morning at Hatfield Woodhouse Chapel will be in aid of the Society. The event runs from 10am until 12 noon and everybody is invited.

On Tuesday 7 July the Society will be guests of the Friends of Sandall Park at the Park. This is a follow up to the presentation which the Friends gave to the Society in February. Details next time.

68th Hatfield scout group have a busy programme this half term for more info look on our website:- 68hatfieldscouts.org.uk Now that we have light nights back and the weather is warming up we are having lots of outdoor activities. Recently the scouts and cubs have been stargazing, and scouts have a visit to the fire station at the airport booked. Cubs are joining with the Armthorpe Cub pack for a camp at Cleethorpes. For more programme details look on our website (see below). Here’s a photo from the end of April, scouts played football, cubs had a parent and cub rounders evening and beavers went exploring behind the village hall to forage for wood to make a fire which we used to toast marshmallows and sing around, and one of the new kits was invested too that night.

Doncaster Advanced Motorists Dear Readers Active systems such as Anti lock braking systems (ABS), Traction control systems (TCS), Electronic stability control (ESC), etc will intervene to try and prevent a loss of control.

ESC is stability control braking. A microcomputer monitors the signals from sensors and compares, 25 times a second, whether the driver’s wishes (steering input), correspond to the actual direction in which the vehicle is moving. If the vehicle moves in a different direction to the one steered by the driver, ESC can recognise the developing situation faster than the driver could.

The system applies measured brake pressure to individual wheels; it stabilises the vehicle and thus guides it in the desired direction.

If the vehicle you are driving has ESC fitted, it will automatically possess two other active safety systems, ABS and TCS. The ABS prevents the wheels from locking during braking.

The TCS avoids wheel slip when driving off. While ABS and TCS influence the vehicles longitudinal dynamics, ESC additionally improves the lateral dynamics.

Instinctively a driver may attempt to avoid a collision by braking sharply and wrenching the steering wheel. This sort of maneuver can easily put the driver in the path of oncoming traffic. This combination of rapid steering and counter steering movements drastically increase the danger of losing control of a vehicle. ESC will act in a controlled and precise way in an attempt to stabilise the vehicle.

ESC includes a computer on the chassis linked to the vehicles braking system that may be in communication with the engine management system to cut engine power momentarily.

Different vehicle manufacturers will programme their ESC systems to intervene at different points dependent on their perceived customer requirement. All systems however are there to prevent a vehicle from skidding.

• ESC has been developed to assist a normal driver, driving at normal road speeds.

• The overriding factor with vehicle control is the law of physics.

• If available tyre grip is exceeded the vehicle will lose control.

• If you have entered a situation too fast, you cannot rely on ESC to save you.

• In a loss of control situation the driver must reduce the vehicle’s momentum by fully applying the brakes, ABS will allow the driver to slow down and steer for a safe exit.
