Editors Letter….. Welcome to the June issue of the Hatfield Arrow. Someone asked me recently if I would include something for them on the news page. As usual I said for them to email me the information and I would put it in the next issue. They then continued to ask me how much it would cost? …. News items and any ‘What’s On’ information is included in the Magazine free of charge. I do prefer to include news and event details from around the Hatfield area but anyone can send me any details and so long as I have enough space and the information is suitable, I will include it. My contact details are opposite, you can call, text, email or post the information. There are some new advertisers in this month, please remember to say where it was that you saw their advert if you purchase their products or use their services.

News, News, News, News, News…. Just a note to say what a good publication the Arrow is for getting local information. Having used many times, it has been remiss of me to take so long to say how good and very helpful this publication is, especially for local tradesmen and companies. In the last 6 months we have had work carried out by a selected few from the publication, and certainly the professional way they have conducted business, should be mentioned more. Steve Blunt Electrical Services and certainly Westwood Installations were both excellent and I would have no hesitation in recommending these companies to any residents in the Arrow circulation area (or further afield), keep up the good work . D Stokes, Dunsville resident .

Congratulations

and lots of love to our Mum and Dad, Carole and Roger Fenton who will be celebrating their Golden yes that's 50 whole years together on the 6th June. Also a big Happy Birthday to our Dad/Grandad Roger on the same day.

Congratulations to Karen Moore from Epworth and Steve Naylor from Sprotbrough who won last months competition to win tickets to see Status Quo perform live at The Doncaster Racecourse.

Lots and lots of love from Simon, Tracey, Hannah, Joe, Vanessa, Terry, Chelsi and Danielle. xxxx

Hatfield Village Watch Perhaps its time to join or renew your membership The Village Watch covers the 4 Villages of our region - this is the first of its kind based on texts being sent to members directly from the local police. We believe that this is the largest neighbourhood watch scheme in the UK, outside London. Membership continues to grow, we are hoping to reach the 100 member target this year – as we enter year 3 of Hatfield Village Watch. Hatfield Village Watch is registered with Neighbourhood Watch. Members have already assisted in crime detection and arrests - following recent incidents in the area, the Police strongly recommend that any Euro cylinder locks are replaced with British Standard locks. We have meetings with the local Police, communication is both ways and this helps the Police to understand whats needed on the ground. We have meeting set with the Police Commissioner for May There are monthly HVW meetings, these are open to all members, sometimes with guests such as local locksmiths, the police or DMBC officers – we attend local PACT meetings The Meerkat HVP (WATCH AREA) signs are steadily going up all around the local area. Question: I’ve received a letter from a bailiff firm saying that they are going to come and collect an unpaid parking fine. I’ve seen stories in the news about how bailiffs have been treating people badly, and I’m worried that they will come to my house before I can sort out a repayment plan. Is there anything I can do to protect myself? Our advice: Citizens Advice Bureaux have helped thousands of people who have fallen foul of bullying bailiffs. We see evidence of bailiffs breaking the rules, so it’s important that you know your rights if a bailiff turns up on your doorstep. At the beginning of April this year, the government introduced new regulations to give people better protection and make bailiffs clean up their act. The new rules should reign in some bad behaviour by bailiffs. They have to write to you to tell you that they have been told to collect the debt so that you have the chance to arrange payment. Bailiffs are no longer allowed to enter your home between 9pm and 6am, when there are only children under 16 or vulnerable people present, or through an open window. Vulnerable debtors are also given more protection, as they must now be given an opportunity to get advice and assistance from an organisation like Citizens Advice. Bailiffs do have the right to charge fees, although there are now set fees that they can charge you at different stages of the process. Your debt could just get bigger if you ignore them. An advisor can help you to check what the bailiff is allowed to take and how much they can charge you in fees. If a bailiff is behaving badly, you can complain to the bailiff firm or the company you owe the original debt to. You might also be able to complain to an Ombudsman. If you believe a bailiff has broken the law or you think they should be struck off, you can complain to the police or the County Court. The bailiff’s certification may then be withdrawn or they could be ordered to give you compensation. If you are in a situation where you are dealing with bailiffs then you should go to your local Citizens Advice Bureau in Thorne or Stainforth. North East Doncaster Citizens Advice can then help explain what your rights are, what a bailiff is and isn’t allowed to do, as well as guiding you through the process of making a complaint, should you need to. THORNE BUREAU MONDAY 10:00 – 14:00 WEDNESDAY 10:00 – 12:30 STAINFORTH BUREAU TUESDAY 10:00 – 14:00 TELEPHONE INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE AT THE ABOVE TIMES ON 0844 499 4137

Footmark Fillies Do The Moonwalk 2014 We did the Moonwalk on Saturday night! I can honestly say it was the biggest challenge (apart from cancer treatment) of my life! It is such an intense mental and physical challenge! There was controversy over mileage (some estimated the route was 28 miles) there was poor weather and a new unfavourable route! There were traffic issues and problems getting volunteers to the course which caused delays in the set off time, to such an extent that slower walkers were so late setting off they even missed their trains home the next morning! But out of 24 Footmark Fillies that signed up to the challenge, 23 of us finished (which included Laura aged 17 and Leah aged 16). I was incredibly proud of myself to complete this massive challenge as I only finished my cancer treatment 10 weeks ago!

I was really proud to have had in my group my sisters, my niece and 20 fabulous friends! We have raised over £8500 in on line donations and when the paper sponsor forms are counted, it will be well over £10000 for Walk the Walk! This challenge was massive, and as a runner I totally underestimated the intensity of this mental and physical challenge, not to mention the emotional effort, because it was a walk! But it was a marathon in every sense of the word! We were filmed on the night with our group and it was on BBC news and Calendar !!!! I'm still really tired now, and due to the neuropathy (late effects of chemotherapy) in my feet, by the time I got the train home Sunday morning, I was in a lot of pain, but it was worth it to raise the money and awareness! After all......PAIN IS TEMPORARY.........PRIDE IS FOREVER! J Hughes

HOLIDAYS & PETS

As the summer holidays approach it is always wise to plan ahead and decide whether your pet is to accompany you or not and hopefully avoid any last minute disappointments that may spoil the enjoyment of your time away. KENNELS

Always book well in advance as kennels/cattery get very busy at peak times. Check vaccination records to make sure they are up to date. It is worth noting that good kennels will also insist on Kennel Cough immunisation for dogs. Arrange to take bedding, toys or something that smells of home to help your pet settle in. If your pet is on a specific diet or receiving medication ensure that you have sufficient stocks to cover the length of their stay and inform your vet of your pets boarding arrangements.

HOME

If your pet is travelling with you in this country it would be wise to consider: Is your pet used to travelling in the car/carrier for any length of time, if not take some time to getting your pet used to short journeys first. Consider buying a pheromone spray/collar such as Feliway/Adaptil to help them cope with the trip. ABROAD

Should you be taking your pet abroad and want to bring them back into the UK you will need to obtain a Pet Passport and arrange the following: Visit the DEFRA website for guidance and full instructions at www.gov.uk.take-pet-abroad. Prior to travel ensure your pet has been microchipped and in the case of dogs inoculated against rabies. Check your destination for diseases such as heartworm, tick borne diseases and leishmaniasis so preventative medicine can be obtained.

We hope that taking these things into consideration will enable you to decide the best holiday option for you and your pet

Latest from Thorne Camera Club Beware of adders when you walk on Thorne and Hatfield Moors! That was one lesson Club members learnt as they took part in a photo shoot led by Phil Carolan and Graham Linley. John Hookway shot this adder basking in the early morning sun during the walk one Saturday morning. There were lots of other wildlife and landscape shots during one of the outings regularly organised by the Club as the weather improves. Adders become active as the weather warms up, too, and can be seen basking in the sun, as this one was when John spotted it. Phil and Graham's knowledge of the area and its wildlife was appreciated as they led members to places they had never been before. Getting close up and personal, Club members later honed their skills in macro, or close-up, photography using flowers as subjects. Local florists donated flowers for this activity, allowing members to try something new with their cameras. Not everyone has a specialist macro lens, but nevertheless, some got pretty close to get the often overlooked details among the petals and stamens. Elaine and Steve supervised some lighting to brighten the room, and members thoroughly enjoyed the experience and learnt a lot about their cameras. No doubt some of the photos will make an appearance in the next competition. During the summer months Club activities move outdoors, and cameras get a good airing. Members may visit Selby Abbey, Hooton Pagnell, Brodsworth Hall or even The Delves, and other places further afield, looking for a good photograph and learning how to get the best from their equipment. If you enjoy Photography and would like to come along , give it a try and maybe join Thorne Camera Club. Many interesting activities are planned for the autumn, with demonstrations and tutorials, visiting speakers, guest judges and practical sessions, all aimed at improving the expertise of the members. It's never too late, new members are accepted at any time of year. You could join this friendly group on one of the outings this summer, just ring David or Elaine for details on 07463821182 or email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk. As the new Thorne Camera Club completed its first year, an Annual General Meeting was held. The Chairman David Ulyett spoke to a full hall about the highlights and milestones passed, and thanked members of the Committee who were standing down after a year of office, for their hard work and support. Steve Hardwick, Michael Neal and Ian Meadows have been instrumental in the success of the Club and members showed their appreciation with resounding applause. New to the Committee are Pete Spate, John Marshall and Frances McIntosh, joining re-elected members David Ulyett, Lynda Ulyett, Elaine Snowden and John Chapman. Lynda Ulyett

Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School In this month’s edition of the Hatfield Arrow we are focusing on the big, exciting changes that have taken place at Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School recently. Three part morning Firstly, as some of you already know, we have got a new timetable at Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School and this gives us an extra break that means 4 breaks a day!!! We also have 3 lessons in a morning. We all enjoy the 4 breaks much more than 3. We decided to interview some people from around the school, to get their opinions! First we interviewed Miss Bridge. Do you like the 4 breaks? Yes I do, I love them! It means we get more learning sessions, as well as breaks. Do you like the 3 lessons? Yes, as we get a lot done. We have to be very organised, but it has made a great difference around the school in terms of learning and behaviour. Secondly, we interviewed Coel from Year 6. Do you like the 3 lessons? Yes, because we get more time to do our work, and it’s really good, especially as some people are doing there S.A.Ts and need to focus. Do you like the breaks? Yes, because there is more time to play. Breakfast club As you will probably already know, we have a new breakfast club which is now officially finished and is absolutely brilliant! The area hosts the breakfast club, a baking area and somewhere for groups to work during the day. It is bright and has great resources. We had an opening morning and parents and children were able to come and look around, and more importantly, enjoy a bacon sandwich in our new facilities!

New menu Recently this term we have had a change with are school dinners. We now have a new menu, which has more variety. You get to choose from a meat option, a vegetarian option, a jacket potato or sandwiches. We then found some people to interview Ajay in yr.6 and Bella in yr.5 Do you like the choices that they give you? Yes because they give you more choices. Do you like the new timetable that we now use? Yes you can eat your dinner without being cramped.

24

Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements

Bella Do you like the choices that they give you ? Yes because if you do not like something, then you have another choice that you probably will like. Do you like the new timetable that we now use? Yes because the classes take it in turns to go first. Do you like the wrist bands? Yes because when you go to the tray service, you give them your coloured wrist band and they know what you want without even saying anything!

Thank you Bella and Ajay - it’s been great listening to your opinions Thank you for reading. We’ll see you next month! Written by Emily, Jasmine, William and Kayla (Year 5)

Sporty Summer at Travis. Hello and welcome to another report about what is going on here, at Travis St Lawrence. At the moment our Year 2 and Year 6 reporters are busy with their SATs, we wish them well. This month we have a new theme- fitness and sports! Therefore, we decided to write a column about what sporty stuff is going on around the world and closer to home- our sports day! For one thing this year, there is the Tour de France, which is coming through Yorkshire! The Tour de France is basically a humongous bicycle race across Europe! That must be very hard! Another thing is the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, where England is playing against Italy very soon. Come on England! Here at our school, we are having our very own sports day! This is where all the three house groups (blue or as we call them, Topaz, yellow or Zircon, and for us Year 5 reporters: reds or GARNETS) compete for house points to win the end of year trophy. The upper site sports day gets pretty competitive with sprinting, long distance running, skipping and relay races. The Year 6s also take on the challenge of the ‘minute mile’. Hopefully in our next report we can tell you the results (Garnets to win!!!). Amy and Cole Lower school sports day Now we are in Year 3, we have a different kind of sports day from the lower site children. At lower site, their sports day is an afternoon of sporting activities whereas our sports day is across a whole day. The lower site children have different games to do like skipping, running, throwing to each other whereas at upper site we have competitive sports such as running, relay and obstacle races. At lower site, we get a ticket so we can get an ice-pop, and last year Tyler helped give out the ice pops. I wonder if we will get ice pops at upper site? At upper site, we are split into our house teams; Topaz, Garnet, and Zircon. We have been practising ready for sports day which is next Thursday. As a whole school, we try to have our sports day together, both upper and lower site together, but this year our upper site field has been taken over by the building work so sadly we have to have them on separate days. We are looking forward to our sports day. Tyler, Neo and Ellis KEEPING FIT In Year 4, we have been learning about the human body, especially how the blood travels and what it is made of. In PE, we have taken part in circuit training, which is good for pumping blood quickly around your body by making your heart beat faster. We learnt a song about our body called “Dem Bones”, have you heard of it? By learning the song, it teaches you the names of the important bones in your body such as: ankle bone, thigh bone, collar bone and your skull. Can you find these bone names in the crossword? Keeping fit helps your bones, heart and brain to stay strong. How do you keep fit? Lewis and Lloyd. Thank you for reading our report and we look forward to sharing pictures of our sports day with you next time. Please don’t forget to look at our blog for more news about our school.

I was having a nice cuppa with colleagues a few weeks ago when one of them let slip that they were busy planning their youngest son’s birthday party. Interested, I quizzed them on the cost of a toddler tear-up in this day and age and was gobsmacked when I heard they would be shelling out around £300 on the day. Shocked isn’t the word, I almost choked on my Tetley! I was astounded that a party for a dozen six-yearolds was going to cost more than I spent on my last holiday – even if that was only a wet week in Hornsey. Now the vast majority of Arrow readers will know by now that I don’t have any kids and I admit to being out of touch with modern family challenges. Blimey, I have had to wear a tin hat after the recent ‘school holidays’ article. But I find it really difficult to understand how anyone can justify spending that kind of money on a kid’s party – unless you’re one of the Beckhams. For that kind of money I would certainly expect more than a £1 lucky bag and a Mr Whippy, that’s for sure. So this got me thinking about my own party experiences and how two of them were important in shaping the person I am today. Being a June baby, more often than not the sun would be out to celebrate my arrival in this world. During the summer of 1974 my parents arranged for me to have a home birthday party, complete with 10 or so of my closest mates. The family tent was pitched proudly in the front garden while I stood to attention guarding a spread that would whet the appetite of the most expectant six-yearold. We are talking endless jelly and custard, sandwiches of all types, sausages on sticks, crisps, cake, fruit squash, sausage rolls, pickles, jams, spreads… You name it, we had it – with not a trace of couscous, humus or nut allergy. There were various party games organised that afternoon but one will always remain in my mind as one of the best experiences one could have with an empty fairy liquid bottle. Now before you get ahead of me let me finish. Unbeknown to me, Dad had spent the previous six months saving the bottles which were now our weapons of choice for the afternoon. It’s hard to put into words the happiness enjoyed by us kids that day, running around like paratroopers spraying cold water at each other on a warm summer’s day. For me, this proves that you do not need to visit a Wacky Warehouse or hire an expensive entertainer for a group of kids to have fun. My second experience was less a little less enjoyable (morally), mainly due to my own selfishness and inability to see that parties should also be enjoyed by those attending rather than just those hosting. Fast forward a couple of years and again I had managed to persuade my parents that hosting a party for their youngest was only the fair thing to do – especially as our David had been given a brand new pair of ‘cow-horn’ handlebars when he had celebrated his. The day came around quickly and I felt it only fitting that, as I was the birthday boy, not only had I to be the centre of attention but I should benefit from my privileged position. As usual Dad was in charge of party games these included pass the parcel (I won), Pin the tail on the donkey (in which I finished first), musical chairs (luckily I finished above second) and finally a treasure hunt. Now my old fella being who he was spent a great deal of time and effort organising what was to be the competition to end competitions! Each child was given five named lollipop sticks which had to be strategically placed in our front lawn. The aim of the game was to place your stick closest to where the treasure had been buried, and thus claim the booty for yourself. What followed can only be described as a frenzy, akin presumably to gold prospecting in the Old West as each participant rushed around trying to secure his own golden nugget. After the allotted 15 minutes, Dad announced that time was up and he would now take us to where the hoard lay hidden. We all followed him as he calmly and carefully measured his steps, eventually stopping and pointing to a small bunch of dandelions that lay seemingly undisturbed within the grass. As we all squatted in anticipation to watch him unearth the prize we were all hoping to win, I stepped over the line. It was a crime so heinous that it still haunts me to this day.

28

Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements

I had only used four of my five lollipop sticks in the madness, carefully secreting the last one inside my sock for later use. As we all squatted close to the dandelions I chose the opportune moment to remove said stick from its hiding place and gently push it into the grass at the strategic point. As dad asked us to depart so he could assess who had won the treasure hunt, I knew full well that my plan had already bagged me the goodies. Needless to say, Dad approached the winning stick and upon seeing my name gave a rather shocked and disapproving look in my direction, announcing that once again I had been victorious. My party colleagues let out a collective groan of disappointment and trudged dejectedly off into the house to collect their belongings. As their parents arrived to collect them I remember thinking to myself, gorging on my winnings for the day, of what a happy and successful party I had hosted. The following day I lumbered down to the breakfast table to sit with my Dad as he busily filled out the answers to the crossword while listening to the radio. As I began recalling my successes of the previous day, feeling pretty proud of my endeavours, Dad began whistling through his nose. This was his ‘tell’ and I knew right away that not all was well with the world. He finally explained that perhaps not everyone else had enjoyed the party as much as I had and that really having a birthday bash was just as much about how much fun my guests had. And that it really was a shame that Roy Brett had come so close to winning the treasure hunt as he was a nice lad. At the time I can honestly say I felt only a tinge of guilt, only slightly upset at my inability to share and rejoice in the joy of others. After all, the prizes were pretty damn sweet. However, the seed had been well and truly planted and from that day onwards I made a promise to myself that I would always get more pleasure from ensuring that everyone else had a good time when organising or hosting events. Maybe I am not the only one to have done what I did at that age but as I have ripened with age I have always wanted to give Roy the buried treasure from that day. And so Roy, if you’re reading this article, there is a six-pack of Curly Wurly’s with your name on them. I hope you enjoy every single one of them as you were the rightful winner of the 1976 Colin Wright Treasure Hunt. PW AKA The Difference PS – Many thanks to everyone who enquired what happened to me last month. Apparently, I have either retired, moved away, signed a deal with The Free Press, been selected for the World Cup, won the Lotto or I have found a bird and started courting, I will leave you to work out which one is the most believable.

HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY The main event at the May meeting of the Society was a Plant Sale. As usual, the meeting place was the Working Men’s Club in the village. Members and guests were invited to bring their spare plants, anything from seedlings to full grown shrubs, to sell, with the proceeds going to Society funds. Tables were set up for the sale and a few plants initially displayed on them, and then a few minutes later, masses of greenery arrived to make the choice for all present very difficult. So the sale got under way and the majority of the plants were sold. To bring the event to a close, the President/Chairman of the Society auctioned a small variegated holly tree. Over £100 was made for Society funds. The June meeting of the Society will be on Tuesday 3rd of the month, and this will be an ‘outdoor’ event. We will be a visiting the agricultural waste digester of Vulcan Renewables at Lindholme. We will start off by meeting at Hatfield Woodhoiuse Working Men’s Club at 6-30pm and then drive down to Lindholme together, members without transport being provided with a lift. A date for your diaries in late June. The Society will be having a coffee morning at Hatfield Woodhouse Methodist Chapel on Saturday 21 June from 10am to 12 noon.

Doncaster Advanced Motorists Less Stressful Driving Dear readers, How long does it take you to get from A to B? If you are like most people, you will know typical journey times for regular trips that you make. Phrases like "I made great time", or "it only took me ..... to get to here today” are typical comments we hear every day. We tend to judge the quality of a trip by how short it is. In fact, we are creating our own time expectations and this puts us under pressure when we can't meet them. To make matters worse, these are often self imposed. Over the next week actually time the same journey twice. On the first occasion, drive as normal, trying not to go faster or slower than usual. The next time you undertake the same trip, consciously drive in a more relaxed and less hurried manner. If you compare the two journey times you will often find that, if your trip was a relatively short one, the difference can be measured in – at most minutes. If the journey was two, three or even four hours, the difference is likely to be no greater than twenty to thirty minutes. Ask yourself how you feel after completing each trip. Is there any difference? What is your stress level like? What have you done with all those precious minutes you saved? The chances are that you will feel more relaxed and refreshed after the second trip. This is more likely to be that case if you accept that there are many things outside your control - the weather, traffic delays due to accidents, road works or simply traffic volumes. Fewer overtakes, less chance of mistakenly going too fast through a speed camera – a more relaxed journey all round. If things do go wrong, it is useful to focus on what you can do, rather than on what you can't. If you have a mobile phone, you can ring ahead to explain that you are delayed so that alternative plans can be made. In this situation the mobile phone can be really useful: once that call has been made, you will drive in a more composed way. The pressure is off if you have rung ahead to say you have been delayed by a few minutes. Needless to say, that call should ideally be made when you have pulled over somewhere convenient and legal – or at least from a handsfree unit. Safe Driving. Paul Tuke.
