I do love the Summer months! The weather is great, (mostly), everyone is out and about saying hello and generally people are happier.

On 11th and 12th March 2015 Kirton Lane Primary School was inspected and the findings were that we are ‘A Good School’ The Head Techer, Mrs Wall, provides clear and rigorous leadership and she is well supported by a strong team of staff and an effective Governing Body. The overall quality of teaching is good and the curriculum is well planned and it successfully promotes pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Pupils are well behaved, polite and friendly.

Adventures with Thorne Camera Club Have you ever thought about skulking around Thorne of an evening?

That is just what Thorne Camera Club members did recently, photographing hidden corners of the town.

Or what about visiting a fishing pond, ‘out of hours’ and from a hide at Eastrington Ponds photographing the antics of ducks, a heron and the effect of wind eddies and raindrops on the water.

Even a stroll around Hatfield Moors could be a possibility for you.

The camera club has already explored the Hull oil refineries, complete with tripods, high visibility jackets and torches, as the evening sun fell, and don’t get me reminiscing about a dogged bluebell exploration of a High Melton wood.

All this has happened in the course of a few months’ membership with Thorne Camera Club.

Throw in a fun-filled micro-workshop and mount making practical, and we have endless opportunities. Only our imaginations would limit suggestions for further adventures.

Perhaps you came to see the VE Celebratory stills in the Methodist Church Hall (where meetings are held during the winter months – 7.15pm for 7.30pm start on Monday evenings). All are made very welcome. Come and meet us. ‘Test the water’!

Who knows what you will be ‘getting up to’, this time, next year.

No prior knowledge of cameras is necessary. However the ‘thrill of the chase’ for an edifying result will soon infect you. And there will be helpful advice a plenty.

Learn how to stitch photographs together, iron out creases, increase/decrease fade. Reach an understanding about AV’s, ISO’s, or focal points. Find yourself immersed in a new language.

If you are a ‘dab hand’ digitally, we beginners will try not to impede or question you too much. Our restraint, or ignorance can be equalled only by received wisdom from knowledgeable members and speakers about ‘Light room’ or from well-qualified visiting judges of our photographic efforts.

So Thorne Camera Club welcomes enthusiasts. Supplies variety, friendship and playful endeavour.

HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A CELBRITY - GET HIM OUTTA THERE! Poor unsuspecting Dave Terry of Hatfield got more than he bargained for when he volunteered (or was that Press Ganged?) into being ‘locked up’ in The Barn until he raised £500 for the Barn Regeneration Project charity, to construct a new eco-friendly community building in Hatfield.

Local press and radio had been tipped off and posters displayed all around the village in preparation for Dave being ‘locked up’ on Friday the 5th of June at 9am on bread and water only! At 08.50 the local PCSO Julie arrived at Dave's house banging on the door "I'm arresting you Dave Terry for the Crime of being totally unreliable" plus other offences eg his extremely bad taste in shoes, talking way too much on his mobile phone, etc, etc. I’m afraid we had to condense the long list from his wife Karen! He was then frog-marched across to the barn... given bread and water, a bucket, a book to read (The Prisoner in Alcatraz) and access to a mobile phone to raise the £500 necessary for his release.

Family, friends and visitors were invited to call in at The Barn and visit for a maximum of 10 minutes each and make their donations or they could call at the Post Office or Community Library or even donate by text. There was a constant stream of visitors during the day, all checked by a Prison Warden first of course. A photographer from the Free Press arrived and then a reporter from TMCR Radio to do a live interview on air, both hungry for the scoop of the week! During the morning 2 female PCSO's came to escort Dave around the Barn field for his regulatory exercise period, he returned smiling!

By the time £300 was raised Dave pleaded for a cuppa so we agreed that he had earned a cup of tea and a piece of cake which he wolfed down instantly. Later in the afternoon Prison Warden Merv escorted Dave for his afternoon perambulation of the exercise field and duly locked him up again – Dave was not so smiley this time. The donations kept rolling in and by approximately 2.30pm Dave had reached £509, wow! but he decided to keep going until 4pm to give any late comers a last chance to donate. By 4pm a fantastic £747 plus Gift Aid had been donated and Dave finally made his escape. It had been an endurance test for Dave but he survived and it was a very successful day of fundraising for The Barn Regeneration Project.

Huge thanks to Dave Terry for being such a great sport, to everyone who donated, visited, helped and supported this event, especially the two PCSO's Julie and Lisa for their participation. North East Doncaster Citizen’s Advice Bureau I’ve heard that the new pension reforms mean that I will have full access to my pension pot when I turn 55. How do I work out what I should do with my pension savings?

The pension reforms that came in this April give people the freedom to access their defined contribution pension how and when they want. You can buy an annuity, or take your pension out in one go, or withdraw it bit by bit and leave some it invested. Planning for your retirement can be complicated so it’s important to get guidance on your options.

The good news is that the Government has introduced Pension Wise, a new free service offering guidance online, over the phone with The Pensions Advisory Service, or face to face with Citizens Advice. The appointments are pre-booked 45 minute sessions tailored to your individual circumstances. Guidance is impartial, meaning that it will not recommend products or services, but they will describe your options and help you consider their impact.

To get the most out of Pension Wise guidance, preparation is key. First, work out the value of your pension pots. Look at your most recent statement, or contact your provider. Check if there are any restrictions attached. Next, get a state pension forecast, and gather the details of any benefits you receive.

The next step is to work out your likely expenditure. Include the cost of essentials like housing or utilities, and leisure activities. This should give you a rough budget.

Bring the information to your Pension Wise appointment. Your guider will help you think through your circumstances, and present the options available to you.

Travis Goes Healthy.

Welcome to our report, this sunny day! From this report, you will find out about different activities which have been organised this month at Travis. All these enjoyable activities have been focused around keeping fit and healthy, whilst also having fun. You will read about our new healthy tuck shop which started this half term, our upper site sports day and also lower sites sports day. You will also read about our recent adventure to the Big Sing event where the children kept healthy through singing.

Healthy Tuck Shop At upper site, we have started running a healthy tuck shop every morning playtime. Children can buy a snack for 20p, these snacks include: raisins, apples, oranges, bananas, pears and a cereal bar. We think this is a good idea, because we get to eat healthily and choose different snacks each day. The Year 6s organise the healthy tuck shop, by collecting the money, giving out the tickets and then staffing the tuck shop at playtime. More and more people are getting involved. Milly and Alfie.

The Competitive Sports Day On Tuesday 9th June, was our upper site sports day. As Year 3s, this was our first sports day at upper site and we were extremely excited. During PE lessons, we have been persevering with activities for sports day such as: sprinting, long distance running (around the perimeter of the school field), throwing and jumping. This prepared us for our sports day. On the day, all the children arrived in PE kit ready for our sporty day. We collected on the school field in our house teams ready to take part. The first race was sprinting and Zircon’s looked strong with this race. During the long distance race, Topaz did well and we think they won most of these. “I competed in the skipping race and came first”, said Ava. Garnet’s were very confident with the obstacle races which looked rather tricky. The final house race was the relay where both Ava and Mackenzie took part, they agreed that it was a rapid race to the end.

Parents could come to either the morning or the afternoon races. In the afternoon, we competed in a carousel of activities which boosted our house point scores from the morning. The activities included pile up the points, rugby touch down, jump over the rope, obstacle, football dribble, javelin, plus times for a much needed rest.

We don’t know who has won the event overall but we hope that it is Zircon. We will let you know as soon as we find out. See our blog for some of the highlights of the day. Mackenzie and Ava. Four-Minute Mile At the end of sports day morning, it is traditional that the Year 6 compete in a 4 minute mile. This is where 8 girls and 8 boys attempt to beat the school record for how quickly they can collectively run a mile. For the girls, the time to beat, from last year was 5 minutes and 20 seconds. This year’s girl team were 8 seconds off the target with 5 minutes and 28 seconds. For the boys the record was 4 minutes and 37 seconds which they just missed with 4 minutes and 56 seconds. We wonder if next year’s year 6s will beat the record. Olivia Big Sing We are writing this report sat outside the Doncaster Dome waiting for the Big Sing 2015 to begin. It is Wednesday 10th June and we have just finished our rehearsals before the big concert tonight. Here are some of our feelings about the concert: Declan said that the rehearsal was fantastic and enjoys the good music. Ashton said that he is looking forward to seeing his mum who is coming to watch the concert. Ella shared that it is a good experience of singing together. Hannah said that she is looking forward to singing the ‘Hall of the Mountain King’. Faith said that she is feeling emotional about singing in front of parents. Lewis said that he is so excited about getting onto the stage. Thomas said that happy makes him feel happy.

Mrs Brownhill and Mrs Cousins were so proud of the children throughout the whole evening and all the children performed magnificently. Thank you to all the organisers for creating such a wonderful event. We are looking forward to taking part next year.

Train Dilemmas……

As I am back working in Sheffield it means I have to undertake the sometimes arduous daily task of travelling to and from the city. As I am keen to stick to my Yorkshire roots and maintain the stereotypical frugality often credited to us Yorkies, I utilise public transport - often championed within the Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire. Now travelling on public transport has its ups and downs, as I am sure those that partake will agree, with nuances and even its own etiquette.

However, and most-importantly, it can also be the best value for money around, assuming you know the best way to use it. A hardened commuter will know of many tricks of the trade in order to make those pennies stretch as far as possible, no matter how many delays or drawbacks. They will always have the comfort of spending less than your average traveller. In order for me to get to work I will catch an early train from Doncaster and then aim to catch the Sheffield to Scarborough train home in an evening, often sitting in the same carriage and sometimes even in the same seat.

It soon dawned on me that I was not alone in my habitual journey; often my train colleagues would do exactly the same things. I often find myself watching these people, amusing myself by classifying them into various genres. You have the ‘readers’ those who generally have their beaks stuck in books or newspapers; the ‘groupers’ who have formed their own travelling posse and will congregate together to gab and gossip; then there are the ‘texters’, often from the younger generation; the ‘musicos’ who lose themselves in their headphones; the ‘twitchers’ who struggle to sit still and insist on claiming the shared elbow rests; the ‘baggers’ who insist on placing a bag on the seat next to them regardless of how busy the carriage gets; the ‘sleepers’ have perfected the art of sleeping between stations with the ease of a light switch; the ‘chatters’ who are the complete opposites of the ‘clampers’; the ‘daydreamers’ (selfexplanatory) and even a seasonal variant when in winter you have the ‘sniffers’ and ‘coughers’. To be honest, I could go on and on.

Often these groups can live in perfect carriage harmony, however, when a day dreamer sits with a musico it’s a recipe for a spoiled journey for the former. Same as when a reader cops for a seat next to a chatter. There’s a breakdown in carriage karma right there. I have realised that sometimes I flit in and out of these groups, sometimes chatting, sometimes reading and sometimes day dreaming.

But my personal dislike is for the musicos, who insist on playing theirs loud enough for those around to hear. Sometimes whilst I am daydreaming I imagine how good it would be if music was piped into the carriages, so that everyone would listen to the same tune. Imagine having a bit of Shirley Bassey belting out from Donny to Meadowhall. The other day as I sat next to a texter I was in full chatter mode, busily talking over the table to my work colleague when I slyly decided to take a peek at what my adjacent companion was texting. Imagine my surprise when I read the following “sat next to annoying tw*t on the train”. It kind of left me nowhere to go really, firstly I was being nosey anyway and so I couldn’t offer any defence, and secondly, maybe I was an annoying tw*t after all, although I will admit it did make me laugh to myself.

Another example of my train dilemmas occurred the other evening when, as I sat at the table seat in a day-dreamer mood opposite a day-dreamer/bagger, my nemesis came walking down the almost full carriage towards me. Now this twitcher is anything but ordinary, no, he has perfected the art of being every kind of traveller that annoys me in one person, he is a twitcher with loud headphones, he often talks loudly to people via his phone, he pinches the elbow rest, he smacks his chops when he eats and this is all mixed in with the fact that he has body odour issues. For a spilt second I had to think of a way of defending the empty seat beside me, and so without any guilt, I to became a “bagger”. However, it wasn’t a bag it was my jacket as it was the best I could think of at the time.

My nemesis edged closer, bobbing his head from side to side in time with his music like a flower in the wind. I tried hard not to make eye contact, staring aimlessly out of the window, my hand pressed firmly on my jacket in the empty seat. At one point I even began attempting to pass

telepathic messages to him: “Go away, I don’t like you, leave me alone, go the next carriage”. But he continued to move towards me. However, my luck was in that evening, although he did hesitate near me, even looking at seat at one point, he continued past me finding another berth to travel back to Doncaster. As it was a hot evening I lost myself in my thoughts, gazing idly out of the window again as the world passed by. Eventually we arrived at Doncaster and I found myself in a queue of people waiting to alight and go on their merry way. As I progressed down the train I noticed that my travelling nemesis was sound asleep, full on mouth open catching flies, and was out for the count. Now this placed me in a moral conundrum. Should I leave him catching Zs and leave him to miss his stop – in a kind of revenge attack for being so bloody annoying? Or should I be the bigger person and attempt to wake him so that he could complete his journey home without the annoying delay? My conscience wrestled with itself as the space between us got smaller. This could be the ideal opportunity to get one back for all the times he had pinched my elbow rest. But the inner good in me made the right choice so as I passed him I gave him a series of hefty shakes in an attempt to awaken him from his slumber/ Eventually, startled at being so roughly shaken, he shot up with a startled look on his face as I bellowed to him, “quick mate, we’re at Doncaster, it’s time to get off”. His pupils dilated as his mind computed and he gazed at me with a puzzled expression, his mind trying to catch up. Eventually the penny dropped and he bellowed back: “I’m getting off in Hull you tw*t and you have spoilt my sleep.” I quickly made my exit. However, as I strode down the station steps I smiled to myself that maybe this had in fact been a positive result rather than a negative one, I mean, I had attempted to do the right thing after all. And although I have seen my travel nemesis on a couple of occasions since, for some reason he no longer chooses to sit near me.

Hatfield Community Library The volunteers at the library would like to thank our borrowers for your continued support and words of encouragement.

We would still like to increase our footfall (official name for borrowers coming in to the library) but I don’t know if this is will be easy because of the change in the buses. I know people from Barnby Dun, Stainforth and Dunsville can only get a bus to the Hatfield terminus every two hours which isn’t very convenient. Perhaps you could let us know if you know anyone who is affected.

As you probably know (because I keep reminding you), we have wifi in the library. If you would like to learn how to download e-books and music free from the library service on to your i-pad or tablet let us know and we can arrange a course.

We have lots (and lots) of leaflets about all sorts of things which could be useful. eg Events in and around Doncaster, health and wellbeing or council advice leaflets.

We also have free papers and local magazines which you can take home (except the Free Press please as we only have one copy). So if the Herald, Hatfield Arrow, Thorne Gazette, and Thorne Times, are not delivered to your door-take one of ours.

People in the Hatfield Village Watch can leave your subscriptions here. I will see that they get to Dafydd. We also have library information on the HVW website.

Author Event. Our next author event will be on Tuesday June 30th when Debbie Taylor will come in to talk about her book “Herring Girl” She will be accompanied by the Poet John Wedgwood Clarke who will read some of his poems.

POA Learning. The library is now a contact point for POA Learning. This is a series of courses which are free if completed. For details call the library or drop in to see the display.

HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY June’s meeting was different from usual. A group from the Hatfield Woodhouse Village Plan were guests of the Society, and we all went on a visit to the new recycling plant at Lindholme.

Many of us had wondered what the new construction was which we passed on the main road to Finningley, with its mound and two domes peeping out from the back. Well now we know. It’s a plant which is owned by Vulcan Renewables for manufacturing gas from vegetable matter, with the product gas being fed into the natural gas grid, and waste liquid and solid being used for fertiliser and soil conditioner. The process used for gas production is called anaerobic digestion, a process where oxygen is excluded, and the current feeedstock is macerated maize plants, which have been grown locally.

The guided tour included a climb to the top of the digester building, and on the climb up we we able to see the process in action, a bubbling mass, through one of the inspection windows. The product gas is then cleaned up and analysed before it is discharged into the grid system. The guided tour took us to all parts of the plant, and the guides explained the processes fully and answered the many questions that we had to ask them. This was a very informative visit and our thanks are due to Vulcan Renewables for organising this visit for us.

Doncaster Advanced Motorists Road Hazards Dear readers, A hazard is anything that contains an element of potential danger. That includes junctions, roundabouts, hillcrests and bends, as well as the position and movement of other road users and even the weather. Imagine combining all six of these elements in one scenario and you have a massive potential for danger.

To an Advanced Driver, any junction, say a roundabout, traffic lights or a left or right turn, is a hazard, not just a child running into the street, a blind bend or an accident black spot. This means that it is essential for you to position your vehicle correctly when dealing with them, giving you that one essential safety ‘ingredient’ sufficient time to react.

To minimise your chances of being affected by other people’s mistakes or adverse driving conditions you must take a planned and systematic approach to your driving.

What is Commentary Driving: Commentary driving- describing aloud everything you see, think and do whilst driving- is a great way to hone your driving technique. On a busy road or in an urban environment you’ll often find there is so much going on that you can’t describe it all quickly enough – you simply can’t keep up verbally.

This proves how many thought processes a vigilant driver goes through on an everyday drive. Commentaries illustrate how much you are really seeing and the level of thinking involved, not just your actions.

Driving Plans: The three simple questions.  What can be seen? Plan your drive on what you can see ahead, to the rear, and all around you  What cannot be seen? Remember that danger can exist on every hidden section of the road  What might reasonably be expected to happen? Keep a look-out for clues to dangers that may lay ahead, eg: Junction warning signs give early notice that a driver may be waiting to pull out ahead.

Dustbins outside houses on a twisty road mean that there could be a stationary dustbin lorry around the next bend.

Loose hedge clippings or straw on a country road, warn that there could be a slow moving tractor or combine harvester round the next bend.

Don’t follow buses to closely or you may get stuck behind them when they pull up at the next stop. Drop back a little and keep a lookout for the next stop, as it provides advanced warning of an opportunity to pass.

Prioritise hazards in order of importance. Deal with each one accordingly.

With these potential hazards in mind drive within the limits of what you can see, never assume anything and plan for danger to emerge from obscured areas.
