News, News, News, News, News, News….. Dragon Boat Race for Charity On Sunday 6th June Diane Wilson, from Thorne, and a team of friends many of whom live locally, entered a Dragon Boat race to raise funds for the Western Park Hospital Cancer Charity. Diane aims to raise £10000 towards the Charity and the boat race is just one of many events she has helped organise and take part in this year. The Boat race team named themselves the Western Park Pink Princesses and the lady and gentlemen participants all dressed in pink t-shirts, had their faces painted like princesses and wore tiara‟s. The team got off to a very slow start , coming last in the first of four races, however they continued to improve their time dramatically and finished the day second to last. (Not Last!!) Participants and spectators alike all had a fantastic day. The weather was very kind, which helped when the Pink Princesses boat capsized at the end of the last race, and Diane managed to raise a staggering £650. The Western Park Cancer Charity raised over £15000 in total from the 12 teams that took part.

Diane will be doing 2 Sky Dives the first on the 6th July and the second on 8th September. She has also taken part in the 10k Jane Tomlinson run at Hull, a 20 mile walk/run and the Race for Life at Doncaster where she wore a full wedding dress. On July 11th Diane is doing a 13k run and on 10th July she is holding a football tournament at Thorne Colliery football ground, Moorends. In August she is taking part in another 10k Jane Tomlinson run. If you would like any information or would like to sponsor Diane for any of the events she is taking part in please contact Julie Morrell, editor at julie@arrowpublications.co.uk or call/text 07854 880882.

NORTH EAST DONCASTER CITIZENS ADVICE BUREAU Advice Column I am a couple of years off retirement age. I know I won’t now get my state pension at 60 but I’m unclear about exactly when I’ll qualify and whether I’ll be entitled to a full pension when I stop work. Can you help? State Pensions are changing from 6 April 2010. If you reach State Pension age on or after that date then you will get a State Pension under the new system. For most people the changes will happen automatically, but you may need to take action to make sure you get everything you are entitled to. To get a full basic State Pension, currently around £95 per week, you will only need to build up 30 qualifying years of National Insurance contributions or credits. Under the current system, women normally need 39 qualifying years and men 44 qualifying years To start getting some basic State Pension, you will only need one qualifying year of National Insurance contributions or credits. Under the current system, you need to build up a minimum number of qualifying years to start getting some basic State Pension – 10 years for women and 11 years for men. Changes to State Pensions will also make it easier to get a full basic State Pension for many people with caring responsibilities. If you are a woman, the earliest age from which you can start getting your State Pension will increase from the current age of 60. The State Pension age for women is rising gradually between 2010 and 2020 to make it the same as for men, currently 65. Your own State Pension age depends on your exact date of birth. You can get a forecast telling you how much State Pension you may get when you reach state pension age from the Directgov website. You can also find out what information you'll need before you apply. Go to: www.direct.gov.uk. Directgov also has lots more information about changes to the State Pension from April 2010. Go to: www.direct.gov.uk. If you require any advice/assistance concerning the above or any other issue, please contact North East Doncaster Citizens Advice Bureau on 0844 499 4137 Mon-Fri between 10:00 & 2:00 to arrange an appointment at Stainforth or Thorne. Contact details and opening times are available on our website at www.northeastdoncastercab.org.uk

If you have a Welfare Benefits enquiry/problem, we now operate an appointments-only session at The Winning Post, Moorends every Tuesday. To make an appointment please ring 01405 740641. Caroline and Eddie meet parents about park facilities Caroline Flint and Cllr Eddie Dobbs have expressed support for establishing a Friends of Thorne Park group after meeting local parents, Danielle Walton and Emma Wilson, to discuss plans for new play facilities at the park. Said Caroline: “Thorne Memorial Park is a great asset to the town, and the £51,000 funding from the last Government‟s Playbuilder fund gives a great opportunity to improve facilities, particularly for older children. “But most important is that whatever funding is used, it is important that residents who feel a real commitment to the park can play a part in supporting it in the future.” Said newly elected councillor Eddie Dobbs: “I‟m very optimistic about plans for the park, and support the idea of adding Section 106 money to produce something really exciting. But I‟m also committed to involve people. After all, this is about the parents and children who want to use the new play facilities.” Danielle Walton said: “It was great to meet Caroline and have her support. Her positive attitude was a breath of fresh air. I was also delighted that newly elected Cllr Eddie Dobbs has expressed support and given us really helpful advice.” Ms Flint said further meetings would be taking place on the future of play facilities at the park.

Hatfield Flyer Children’s Page Feature – Different Stages in Nursery At Small World Day Nursery the children‟s learning experiences are based around their individual developmental needs. From the age of 3 months, babies are given new experiences according to their individual needs. At such a young age babies learn through their senses. Sounds, smells, physical contact, singing, games and talking to your baby are vital; as well as encouraging physical skills for crawling, standing and walking. Enjoying early games such as peek-a-boo, clapping and finding hidden objects will all be part of a child‟s daily play. There will also be opportunities for one-to-one interaction with staff and other children. We also spend sometime each day playing outside. Now and again, we take children for little walks in buggies along the quiet roads behind the nursery. From around the age of 12 months your child will start to experience natural materials such as water and sand as well as discovering the pleasures of play dough, printing and brush painting- all with close supervision of course! From the age of 18 months your child will slowly be integrated into the toddler room where they are taught to become more independent, they will be introduced to a wide range of arts and crafts to develop their co-ordination and concentration. Puzzles, number games, drawing and singing will all be part of their daily routine. From the age of 3-5 your child will follow a curriculum of the Early Learning Goals set out by the Government. Children at this age will be encouraged to develop all the necessary skills and knowledge to give them an early start to their education. This is the age when true and strong friendships are built. For more information on this please contact Small World Day Nursery on 01302 844485.

In 2002 I worked for a Council in the North West as an employment support officer. My main duties consisted of helping people with various disabilities get back into the employment market. Due to a management buy out it transferred into private hands so rather than leave me with nothing to do, I was told to report to the Daisyfield Day Care Centre - a centre where people with varying disabilities would go during the day for various social, health and educational activities. I was met on my first day by a great friend of mine, Nigel, who told me he wanted to guide me through two doors whilst working at the centre and the quicker I did them and got used to them the better – namely, personal changes and assisting the service users eat their lunch. Without further ado I walked through these doors and found myself involved in lots of worthwhile and challenging activities. I gradually became more in awe of the good people who worked at the centre. One of those was the Centre manager, a lovely woman called Vera, who one day decided that I would be a useful asset in tackling a couple of issues that had been sadly neglected. The first was the centre snooker competition and the second establishing of a men‟s group to address their interests and any issues Vera had been instructed to tackle as part of a new local government initiative. Over the next week I gathered entries for the eagerly awaited snooker tournament and set the first match to take place after the weekend. In order to add a certain amount of je nes se quois to proceedings I decided to don the old dinner jacket and bow tie complete with a set of white gloves in order to look the part. At 9.30am prompt I gathered the two opponents Mike and Kevin, explained the rules and format and started the 2002 Daisyfield Snooker Cup. By 2.30pm Mike and Kevin were still going strong, having yet to settle this one frame knockout match. The audience had now whittled down to just three, two of which were gently snoring. However, as we approached the colours Kevin had a 22-point advantage and looked home and dry. An hour later Kevin was 36 points ahead with only the black left to pot. Mike approached the table and leathered the ball with all his might, smacking it so hard that it came back off at least five cushions before eventually dropping like a stone into the corner pocket. I felt a small sense of joy alongside obvious relief for at least Mike had achieved something at the end of surely the longest game of snooker since Stevie Wonder played Ray Charles for a fiver. However, much to my amazement, Kevin approached the chalk board with its list of entries and carefully rubbed out his name from the draw. I scratched my head and tactfully enquired why he had done this, and Kevin explained that Mike had won fair and square and that he would be ready to try his luck again next year. I was now well and truly www.confused.com and could not fathom out why Kevin appeared to think he had lost when the scoreboard clearly indicated a convincing win. It was only after a further 15 minutes of subtle interrogation did I realise that both Mike and Kevin had been watching snooker for a number of years and had come to the conclusion that whoever potted the black had won the game. I suddenly understood that in my own ignorance I had failed to communicate with both Mike and Kevin what they‟re rules were in snooker and how they wanted to play. If I had, I could have let them get on with things concentrating only on who had potted the black. After two weeks of marathon snooker the tournament was over and I was congratulated on doing such sterling work in keeping the residents entertained and happy. The following Friday saw the inaugural meeting of the Daisyfield Men‟s Group which was eagerly attended by up to 20 male service users. After working through a simple agenda mainly consisting of items such as “types of biscuits”, “best football team” “snooker comp” etc, I approached the item marked “men‟s health”. This had been sealed within an envelope and so I was ignorant as to what was about to hit me like a train through a darkened tunnel. I opened the envelope to be faced with the challenge of addressing the issue of testicular cancer with 25 men all with varying forms of

24

learning difficulties. Not being one to shirk a challenge or show disrespect to people less fortunate that myself, I set off attempting to address this rather prickly issue. After what seemed like the longest 25 minutes of my life – apart from when Mike tried to get out of a snooker on the blue - I had unleashed mass panic and confusion amongst the male service users who had come to the group conclusion that I had just reliably informed them that they were all suffering from testicular cancer, why else would anyone speak to them about such a serious issue. It was only thanks to Vera‟s experience and skill that she was able to calm things down. Looking back I wish I had taken time open that envelope in advance and maybe realised that my skill and experience had reached its level with organizing the snooker competition. After eight rewarding but at times exhausting weeks I was given notification that my transfer was now ready and my time was up at the Daisyfield Day Centre. I hope you will not see my recollections as in any way belittling or condescending towards the service users who were both lovely, very giving and were a joy to work with; I have shared these memories with you with the aim of highlighting the great and much admirable work that is often undertaken by those people working in the care industry. Certain areas of the council in Doncaster have recently come under immense pressure and at times negative attention from the media which has resulted in a lot of the good work done by people going un-noticed. I worked in the care sector for 12 weeks and over those weeks I developed a huge amount of respect and admiration for people who undertake this work. As Nigel said to me on that first day when taking me through my two doors, always remember this service user could be your sister or brother or even your son or daughter and so you should always protect their dignity and privacy and make their time at the centre as rewarding and happy as possible. And so I salute all those who work in the industry either paid or unpaid and ask those people who read the papers to always remember the amount of good things that happen in Doncaster. PW – The Difference Ps – I would like to apologise for an error in my last article. Gordon Harper was Lol Harper‟s nephew and not his son as I had thought.

Police Clampdown on Domestic Burglary Police in Doncaster are reinforcing and continuing the fight against people who commit burglaries. Operation Account has been set up to take place over the next eight weeks to drive down burglary and to target people who continue to commit burglary offences. Burglary dwellings in Doncaster have reduced by 16% in the past year however, there has been a slight increase in the south of the borough during April. Police continue to remind home owners that they can still do more to stop burglaries. Detective Inspector Steve Whittaker from the Priority Crime Team in Doncaster said, "We all have our part to play in reducing offences of burglary. Although crime levels are at an all time low, we are urging home owners to be more vigilant.” Advice to be more vigilant includes making sure alarms are working and set and that car keys are kept out of view in the home to deter opportunistic thieves. Detective Inspector Whittaker added, “South Yorkshire Police take offences of burglary extremely seriously and we will do everything we can to prevent and detect burglaries. If we suspect you of committing crime, we will do everything in our power to bring you to justice. Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School News! Welcome to the summer term here at Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School. As you probably know this is our last term at this school and this is our last report. We would like to thank all the teachers here for the wonderful time we have had at this school. Road Safety Training First of all we will tell you about the road safety awareness training for Year One. The children enjoyed learning how to cross the road safely with Mr. Handley from Doncaster council and they also learnt a rhyme about how to cross the road. Did you see them working on the roadside with Mr. Handley and their parents? French Week Before half term we said good-bye to our French teacher M. Fournell in our French Celebration Week. We enjoyed Chicken Chasseur for school lunch that day and presented a special assembly of French songs and dances to M. Fournell. Afterwards we all went out on the school field for M. Fournell to take a photo of the whole school. He said that he will miss us. Water Park and Hatfield Moors After a busy SAT`s week year 6 also accompanied by year 5 took a trip to Hatfield Water Park, where they got very wet. They took part in many activities including a Canadian-canoe treasure hunt and they also went rock climbing! After three days spent there they spent the Friday before half term on a nature walk around Hatfield Moors and it was very tiring! Year 5 had made their own „I-Spy‟ booklet predicting which animals and plants they might see on the moors. The weather was beautiful and a great day was had by all. Fire Brigade Years 4,2 and FS2 had a great time racing teachers in fire suits when the fire brigade came to tell them about fire safety. They learnt to shout as loud as they could `FIRE HELP‟ if a fire ever occurs in their house! World Cup Week At the time we are writing England have only played one match in the world cup and have drawn with America. We celebrated our own World Cup Week where we learnt about some of the nations taking part. We also played several football tournaments in our own House teams! We would like to thank every one who reads our reports we hope you enjoyed them we also hope our successors enjoy writing them as much as we do! Charlotte and John

Money, Money, Money. Another very busy week at Hatfield Travis Infant School as we have been taking part in our ‘Maths is Fun Week’. In the midst of all the fun, our reporters have still managed to find time to bring you news of it. It was „Maths is fun week‟ this week, there were lots of activities, my favourite was the bank role play, it was really fun. Mr Phil Bagley came to talk about what it was like in the bank. He came from the Royal Bank of Scotland, the RBS. Some of the activities were coin rubbing, guess the price, bank role play, making binca purses and lots of others. Even Rev. Wilson came to talk about the collections in the Church and where it goes and what charities they raise money for. I had so much fun in Maths is fun week, you would have too. - Danielle. Mr Bagley said that money is made from special paper and all sorts of things mixed together.- Gemma. I learnt about people who work to earn money. - Kieran. Mr Bagley told us that a long time ago people split the penny up every time they had to pay someone. Mr Bagley told us that money can be recycled. - Maisy. I found out that if you spend all the money then there won‟t be any money left. - Anya. Mr Bagley said that “we have different accounts for different families and married couples share an account”. - Kimberley. I know that when money is old, it goes in a fire in banks. Mattie. Mr Wilson came to talk to us about a gold dish people put their money in.- Charlotte. At the end of the week, the children had the opportunity to create a poster highlighting what they had learned, with the specific focus on how to save money around the house. The children have really enjoyed both the visitors and the activities and are more confident in handling money. Mrs P Cousins.

History of the Highway Code Dear readers, With 1st June marking the 75th anniversary of the introduction of the driving test in the UK. It needs drivers to continually improve their driving techniques in increasingly demanding driving conditions and keep their skill levels up to date. Our driving tests, however, have changed little over the years and an improvement in driving standards is needed to fill the gap. Although cars are becoming easier to drive – with much improved brakes and suspension as well as power-steering and a host of other safety systems. Traffic has significantly increased and traffic networks have become immensely more complex, so the driver needs far more understanding of what‟s going on outside the car. In the UK 71 per cent of road deaths occur on rural roads. It is improving the driver what will make the single biggest improvement to road safety in the future, In 1935 the driving test was introduced: within a year the death toll had fallen by nearly a thousand 2008 there were two-thirds fewer deaths (2,538), but fourteen times as many vehicles (34 million) still leaves plenty of room for improvement. The 1931 edition: cost one old penny contained 18 pages of advice, com-pared to 133 pages in the 2007 edition. In 1935 edition included advice to drivers of horse drawn vehicles to „rotate the whip above the head; then incline the whip to the right or left to show the direction in which the turn is to be made. Since those early days, regular revisions of the Code have reflected changes in technology and developments in traffic management and road safety. Diagrams of road signs - just ten signs in all - were first seen in the second edition, as was a warning about the dangers of driving when affected by alcohol or fatigue. Stopping distances made their first appearance in the third edition, along with new sections giving hints on driving and cycling. The arrival of motorways in the late 1950s led to the inclusion, in the fifth edition, of a new section on motorway driving, explaining such things as how to use exit slip roads and advising drivers to avoid drowsiness by stretching their legs at the parking or service areas. The 70-page 1978 edition introduced the Green Cross Code for pedestrians and the new orange badges for the disabled. Prompted by soaring car crime statistics, the amended version contained advice on vehicle security. The 1990s saw a new format taller booklet and the inclusion of a section geared to the new driving theory test, which in the current edition has now become part of the Code itself. To be continued: If you are interested in further information regarding the courses that we offer, you’ll be able to find this information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk or Tel: 020 8996 9600 Safe Driving.Paul Tuke.Secretary, Senior Observer.
