Well, I thought it would be Summer by now, however it is the middle of June and the sun has still not appeared! Hopefully July will be the start of some lovely warm weather!

The July issue includes lots of news, including an article about a young boy from the area that has been raising funds for the Aurora Centre by making and selling Jewellery to family and friends. It’s a lovely story that you’ll find on page 12.

Maize Maze is opening on 14th July. This year they have a new Tea room, serving cakes, drinks, light meals, and Ice-cream.

They also have a new soft play area for toddlers. You can find full details on their advert which is on page 7 or on their website www.bostonpark.com The Phoenix Group in conjunction with Hatfield Woodhouse Village Hall are performing Calendar Girls. This is a premier amateur production and if its anything near as good as the pantomime performances it should definitely not be missed. See the What's on page for details.

Caroline Flint MP has secured a confirmation that Thorne North Railway station will keep its ticket office.

The Don Valley MP and local councillors have also met with Northern Rail Client Stakeholder Manager, Stuart Rands at the station to discuss the ongoing access difficulties for passengers travelling east, because only platform has a ramp for easy access. Said Caroline Flint: “Thorne North is a very poplar station, which has good parking, CCTV and helpful station staff. The next step is to improve the access to one platform where passengers have to use a stair bridge or steep steps to access. That is clearly not in the interests of passengers who are elderly, disabled or with children in buggies – so we are looking at a number of options to make the most of a really valued local station.”

After local Labour councillors and Caroline Flint had expressed anger at widespread proposed ticket office closures, Transport Ministers have now confirmed that the station will keep its ticket office, although opening times are to be reduced by 30minutes.

Caroline Flint MP said: “It was only when MPs shone a spotlight on plans for widespread ticket office closures that Ministers have had to sit up and take notice. I wrote to the Secretary of State demanding full disclosure of any decision affecting Thorne North station and now we have it in black and white that our station ticket office stays open.

Councillor Rachel Hodson said: “The loss of this ticket office would have been a huge blow to residents who commute to Doncaster, Goole and further afield. The Ministers agreement that the office stays open is a victory for Thorne and good news for local residents.”

Councillor Eddie Dobbs added: “We asked the Government to think again and I am delighted that our ticket office will stay.”

In a letter to Caroline Flint The Secretary of State for Transport, Justine Greening, confirmed new opening hours for the station ticket office, but also confirms that there are “no further proposals in relation to Thorne North”.

NORTH EAST DONCASTER CITIZENS ADVICE BUREAU

Advice Column My husband works in a local newsagent 16 hours a week and I work six hours a week in a local nursery, bringing our joint number of hours to 22. We have one child. We have both tried to increase our hours with our respective employers but they have no more hours available and we have now lost our Working Tax Credit. Is there anything we can do?

Since 6 April, couples who have at least one child and get Working Tax Credit will normally have to work at least 24 hours a week between them instead of just 16 hours to qualify for any payment.

One of you must also work at least 16 hours a week.

However there are exceptions to the new 24-hour requirement. For example, if you or your partner are disabled in certain circumstances, if one of you is a carer or are in hospital or is over 60, you continue to qualify if one of you works 16 hours a week. It is your responsibility to tell the Tax Credit Office if you think you should continue to qualify, so if you think this may apply to you let the Tax Credit Office know as soon as possible.

Many of those who have their Working Tax Credits stopped may be entitled to other benefits such as Jobseekers Allowance - if you are working less than 16 hours and your partner is working less than 24 hours you may be entitled to a top up of JSA if your joint earnings come to less than £121/ week. You also may be entitled to other benefits such as free school meals or housing and or Council Tax Benefit. If you would like a benefit check do contact your nearest CAB. Citizens Advice wants to raise awareness of the financial difficulties this change is causing families, and is looking for anonymous case stories to use as evidence in their social policy work. PETS ABROAD As the summer holidays approach it is always wise to plan ahead, decide whether your pet is to accompany you abroad and hopefully avoid any last minute disappointments. A recent survey showed that less than 25% of pet owners allowed sufficient time to organise a Pet Passport and had to change their travel plans.

What do I need to do to take my pet abroad?

Within the EU. Check the DEFRA website http://www.defra.gov.uk/ wildlife-pets/pets/pets/travel as requirements may vary depending on destination and legislation.

Your pet must be microchipped.

Your pet must be vaccinated against rabies. An EU country can be entered 21 days after the initial vaccination after which there is no waiting period provided boosters are kept up to date.

Be in possession of a valid pet passport for the travelling pet.

Outside the EU. Contact DEFRA or AHVLA for advice on any additional certificates that may be required by the country you plan to visit.

Additional Considerations 1-5 days prior to re-entering the UK a tapeworm treatment must be administered by a veterinary surgeon. ( With the exception of return travel from Malta, Eire & Finland) The minimum age for rabies vaccination is 3 months.

The route and means of transportation must comply with current legislation.

Check your destination for diseases such as heartworm, tick borne diseases and leishmeniasis which may be fatal for your pet, so preventative medicine can be obtained.

If you are taking your pet to parts of Southern Europe it is recommended provide preventative treatment for sand flies and mosquitoes.

If travelling by air contact the airline well in advance to confirm their rules for transporting pets.

Pet holiday insurance is now available for 30 days or longer that can provide cover for emergency veterinary fees, loss of passport and many other eventualities.

Local boy, Mitchell Hughes, Raised Funds for the Aurora Centre, Doncaster.

Mitchell, aged 10, from Hatfield Woodhouse, visited the Aurora Show last year to help his mum with the raffle. He was so impressed with the centre that he asked his mum if he could do something to help with their fundraising.

With the help of his mum, and his younger brother Mackenzie, Mitchell started to make some Jewellery to sell and raise money so that he could sponsor a Scene at the 2012 Aurora Fashion Show.

He made Necklaces, bracelets, earrings, keyrings and dream catchers and sold them to family, friends and at school events at Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School.

He set himself a goal to raise £200 however, he managed to raise a fantastic sum of £907.30.

Mitchell is still making jewellery and is hoping to raise some more funds for his Street Dance Crew in order to purchase some Hats and T-shirts. His crew have arranged to hold a show at Ash Hill Academy and are hoping to arrange many more at other schools in the area.

Aurora is a community Charity set up 9 years ago in South Yorkshire. Our aim is to support and help people who have been diagnosed with cancer to face the world with confidence, when they may be experiencing the most difficult time of their lives.

Over the years, we have listened carefully to what our patients have told us about how they feel about having a cancer diagnosis, so we set out to make that journey more manageable.

Local Volunteer Community First Responders Honoured.

Two of the Hatfield and Dunscroft First Responders, Mr Roger Lowrey and Mr Terry Gibbs have been awarded the Queens Jubilee Medal for their services to the Community. The medals will be presented to them by the Vice Lord Lieutenant of South Yorkshire on Saturday 23rd of June at Doncaster Racecourse.

Both Roger and Terry volunteered almost 9 years ago to be trained in Life Saving in The Community, and are used by the Ambulance Service in cases of difficult breathing, suspected heart problems and suspected stroke victims.

They are trained in the use of, and carry the life saving defibrillator, oxygen and airways to assist breathing. They receive regular training and are required to resit their qualifications twice yearly.

There are currently 5 responders in the area who set their own rota, which can change weekly according to work patterns and personal circumstances.

Responders book on duty from home and are supplied with the knowledge and equipment to carry out all tasks they are liable to meet. Responders are informed of calls by mobile phone (supplied) and are very often on scene first and then assist the full time ambulance crew seeing the patient off to hospital.

Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School A Busy Summer Term based on Olympic-themed learning!

Our final half term is jammed packed with exciting activities from Olympic themed learning including a special Olympics week to super summer productions.

Foundation Stage Our younger pupils are learning about the Olympics by baking Olympic biscuits and they are being creative by making their own trophies out of cardboard boxes. They are also listing things they would take to the Olympics.

To prepare themselves for full time school the new children are visiting FS2 for when they start at HWPS. Foundation Stage 2 children are learning to order numbers using numbered Olympic torches. They are also looking forward to taking a trip to Austerfield on the 20 th June.

Year 1 and 2 Year 1 are going on a trip to a garden centre called Adams Grange to learn about plant life. They are also practising the Key Stage 1 concert of which the theme is fun songs. They are working with year 2 in lessons learning about the Olympics.

Year 2 are learning about Mexico and are looking forward to going to a Mexican restaurant to compare the different tastes between English food and Mexican food. Sounds delicious!

Year 3 and year 4 In year 3 and 4 the children will be holding a sports wear day on Friday 15 th June, the children can wear their favourite sports clothes, for example, horse riding clothes, football kit or running clothes.

They will then be designing their own sports wear.

Year 4 will be having a fashion show with the sports wear they have created. They will also be making posters and TV adverts to advertise their sports wear. They are also going on a trip to Abbey House in Leeds to investigate a murder mystery.

Year 5 Nine Year 5 students have recently competed in a rounders tournament at Ash Hill Academy and came second out of 5 teams. Ash Hill Academy is also holding a cricket tournament on the 13 th June and students out of year 5 and 6 are taking part. On the 20 th of June there will be an Olympic Day at Ash Hill Academy.

And Finally ...Year 6 On the 11th June year 6 went to Hollowford in Castleford for 5 days on their residential visit. We have just heard that they are having a great time canoeing, walking and caving. They are having a well deserved break after working so hard for their SATs! Events KS1’s sports day is on the 21st June KS1’s concert is on the 4th and 5th July KS2’s track events is on the 21st June KS2’s tug-of-war is on the 22nd June KS2’s field events is on the 28th June KS2’s cross-country is on the 19th June KS2’s concert is on the 12th and 13th July The whole school is doing Active Fusion Olympic Day on the 18th June Year 6 pupil’s v teachers at rounder’s 17th July

Diamond Jubilee Celebration’s at The Croft Children’s Centre.

A Very Royal Tea Party at The Croft Children’s Centre Wednesday 6th June 12pm – 2pm Families from Dunscroft, Dunsville and Hatfield came together for an afternoon of celebration to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and celebrate this historic event in style.

The whole community was invited to the Children’s Centre located on Sheep Dip Lane, Dunscroft for games, fun, magic and Punch and Judy!

Denise Beevers, centre manager said; “The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee has been an exciting event for the entire country and here at The Croft Children’s Centre we wanted to join in with the celebration’s that have been happening all over England. We wanted to bring the community together for an afternoon of fun and games and we were thrilled with the number of families who came along on the day to join in the fun.

Tickets for our event went on sale at the beginning of May and we were delighted that the event was a sell out. Asda of Stainforth kindly donated cakes and drinks for our occasion which the children thoroughly enjoyed and we would like to thank them for their valued support.”

Families were treated to a show with Punch and Judy, one of nation’s favourite family puppet show’s which this year celebrates its 450th anniversary this year! As well as Punch and Judy there was magic, balloon modelling and a British themed Street Party.

The Croft Children’s Centre has a host of events planned for this Summer Holiday’s.

The Croft Children’s Centre Open Day Free Face Painting and Cupcake Decorating!

30th July 2012 10am – 12pm The Croft Children’s Centre is holding an open morning on the 30th July 2012, all families from Dunscroft, Dunsville and Hatfield are invited!

The open morning will be a chance for families from the area to pop into the centre, have a look around, chat to staff and see what services and groups are available for them and their family. There will be lot’s going on including free face painting and cupcake decorating for the children.

Denise Beevers, centre manager said ‘’The Croft Children’s Centre is a popular centre at the heart of its community with many families already accessing our services. We are however aware that there are families within our community with young children who are unsure of what their local Children’s Centre can offer and do not take advantage of free services and groups that are right on their doorstep.

This open morning will give these families the opportunity to pop along for an informal chat and look round the centre as well as being able to have some free fun with their children, we are confident they will like what they see!

We are encouraging families who currently use the centre to come along with friends and family from the area and help us to introduce new people to The Croft.

Get ready, Get Set – Go !!

As I drive through the village I have to admit I am surprised by the amount of ‘power walkers’ there are. They are all vim, vigour and extended elbows in pursuit of a good sweat and trimming a couple of pounds before their summer holidays. What struck me is hardly any of them are men and most of the women feel the need to go about their business in pairs. Maybe it’s a security thing?

As regular readers will know by now my mind often wanders and this led me to notice there are hardly any kids playing outside these days. Maybe that’s also a security thing, but I have to admit I find it a real shame. Kids seem to be deprived of fresh air for their parents’ fear of letting them off the leash and have to survive on a diet of Wacky Warehouses, complete with an up to date health & safety certificate and crash mats.

I have included a simple picture of a can which has been half-filled with soil. As a child, who would have thought that this simple contraption could provide the kids of the Howville Estate with hours of nailbiting excitement? We are talking about the game of “Rally-Co” or, in some less classy areas, “Kick the Can”. Along with ‘British Bulldogs’, the classic ‘Hide & Seek’ and our David’s favourite ‘Doctors and Nurses’, Rally Co would get the whole estate gang together on our summer holiday evenings.

These games became stuff of legend.

Charlie Wagstaff ended up on the missing person’s register, so good was his skill at hide & seek. He eventually turned up running a fish and chip shop in Kettering, with a world record 19 years without getting caught. Rally-Co had simple rules. First you found an empty can and filled it half full with soil. This was then placed - as in the picture - on a drain top. Players would split into two teams, the hunters and the hunted. The hunted would then throw the can or kick it giving them the time it took for the can to be replaced on the drain to make their escape into whatever hiding place they could feel safe in. If the hunters found the hunted they had to tag them by placing one hand on the hunted head and one hand on the bum… gotcha!! Those caught had to return to area of the “can” and wait until all of them were “tigged”. However, there was a twist in this game in that any of the hunted not tigged could sneak up on the can and kick it again, setting the captives free once more. [Are you getting this?] It sounds more complicated than it was.

Anyway, one evening a good friend of mine (Sean Hardy) whispered in my ear as we lined up at the start that he had found the perfect hiding place. We would be safe from capture and also be within easy reach of kicking the can if we needed to set our friends free. Perfect! The fiendish place, he eagerly explained, was his dog’s kennel in his back garden. Sean had done his homework as he explained he had sussed it out earlier that day and although it looked small from the outside, the kennel would provide a snug hiding place for two impish can kickers.

The game began and we set off like startled rabbits, determined to prolong our freedom. Sean and I

sprinted down the street, snuck through the alley into his back garden and headed directly towards our safe house. We carefully negotiated with the resident German Shepherd and set about squeezing through the narrow opening into our canine cove, complete with locking door and carpeted with a fetching brown shag pile. The dog followed, probably more out of curiosity, and determined not to give up his stately home to a pair of would-be squatters.

We made ourselves as comfortable as a young lad could possibly be sharing a dog-stenched box when we heard footsteps coming towards the kennel. Surely we’d not been rumbled so soon, our plan was fool proof? We held our breath, which was welcomed due to the poochy pong, when we heard a plopping sound. The wooden trap door closed and we could hear the wooden locking plank slide across, entombing the three of us. Now picture this if you will: it was 3pm in July 1976, which incidentally was the hottest summer on record, and there were two of us and a dog stuck in a box smaller than a coffee table. I began to empathise with Sir Alec Guinness in Bridge Over The River Kwai at this point.

An hour went past, then two and three and we were getting really worried. What if we were trapped in here forever? I know some of you may be thinking why didn’t we shout for help? Well, if you had ever got on the wrong side of Sean’s dad you would know the answer to that one.

Although a fair man, he wouldn’t have been best pleased to find his eldest lad and his mate had spent the afternoon squatting in his dog kennel. Not only this, we were also fiercely determined not to be caught by our pursuers. This was a top quality hiding place, despite the obvious drawback.

We occasionally heard voices and at one point we became aware that John and Adrian Meredith had decided to go home for their Sunday dinner, part bored with the fact we had seemingly disappeared.

By the end of the fourth hour I cannot begin to tell you what that dog kennel smelt like, let alone the dog. This was getting beyond a joke as I feared I would not only return home smelling like a Crufts winner but more importantly I would miss my Sunday dinner. Eventually, after what seemed like an eternity, we heard the sound of the lock being retracted footsteps disappearing into the distance. We pushed the door open and breathed the scent of dog-free fresh-smelling summer air, escaping our safe house to stretch our legs and appreciate freedom. We bounded round to kick the can and free our mates, who had no doubt been rounded up in our absence but there was nothing but tumbleweed. The game had ended two hours previous and everyone had gone home to watch the tennis. All that remained was a crushed can to go with our shattered dreams.

A few years ago I bumped into another mate at the races who confessed to being our mystery captor that day. His name, Scott Murray! He had apparently witnessed us squeezing into our hideaway and thought it would be a good laugh to lock us in for a short while. However, it was only while he was having his tea at his Aunt’s house that he remembered what he had done and had to wait upon his return to set us free. I laughed but made sure he knew it was no fun sharing a cramped kennel with a dog the size of Digby when it was cracking the flags.

Anyway, to end this article I issue a challenge to all those male power walkers out there! Get those elbows warmed up lads and show the ladies how it is done. Enjoy your summer holidays everyone.

‘Get your Grown up Gardening’ Day at Travis.

On the Friday 25th May, Travis St Lawrence Primary held a ‘get your grown up gardening day’. The children took part in many fun activities using skills they had developed in skills workshop. Our Year 3 reporters visited the lower school, on that day, to work with the younger children. Some of the Year 4 and 5 children took some of the planters and hanging baskets made on the day to Hatfield Library.

The ‘get your grown up gardening day’ was an event where you could invite adults in to do all sorts of gardening activities.

In Year 6 and 3, they did their activities at 1:30 to 2:30. One of the many activities was to plant flowers in the flowerbed at the front of the school in the shape of the union jack, to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. In addition, another activity was to dig a path in the school’s garden leading behind the back of the shed. Various other exciting jobs were done on that very sunny day.

Jack and Jasmine The Year 3 reporters went down to the lower school to see how they did their ‘get your grown up gardening’ day. The activities included planting the hanging baskets and planters to decorate the library, pulling out weeds and planting bedding plants. We even saw the nursery children planting in their wellies! The parents could also bring their own pots to plant and take home.

Mitchel and Abigail One of the Year 3 and Year 6 activities was to plant a bike! We planted my big sister’s bike in a flower bed and trailed a clematis over the wheels.

The parents dug a large trough and dropped the bicycle wheels into it. We also put a planter onto the front of the bicycles with bedding plants into them. Someone thought that planting the bicycle would make it grow into a motorbike!!!

Olivia and Jack On Friday a few weeks ago we had a ‘get you’re grown up gardening’ day, at 2:30 till 3:30. ‘Get you’re grown up gardening’ is where you’re adult’s come in and help garden. Before we started, we were put into our skills workshop groups and went into our beautiful school garden. One of the groups went behind the old, but big shed to create a path between our wildlife area. We used logs to create a barrier between the paths and recycle wood chipping as the flooring.

Callum and Emily ‘Get you grown up gardening’ is where you bring your grown up in to school and they help with gardening activities. My mum came to school to help them garden and she pulled a couple of weeds out. We were helping in the Year 3 shared area and there was a large dead clematis which we had to pull out. It took 9 people to pull it out and it was like the story “The Giant Turnip”. There was also a cake sale and some delicious refreshments.

Olivia and Mattie We had lots of jobs that needed to be done in the garden; here is some of year fives. First we were

put into groups and then we were allocated an adult. The adult guided us to our first activity. My first activity was the bird feeders we had to mix some seeds into fat.

Then we had a log with holes in it and rolled the mixture in to a ball, and stuffed it into the hole. The other activity was making a card, it was great. The best improvement was the path! There were some people that got some chopped logs, and laid them in a path and put down some wood chippings in the middle. The main part was raising money and having fun.

There is still lots to be done Ethan and Maisie To conclude we thank Mrs Jordan and her team for all of her help and contribution. She says “I think the event went wonderfully well and we got some lovely things done. Doncaster Advanced Motorists On The Motorway Dear readers, Lack of stimuli when driving on motorways means that it takes extra concentration to stay alert and observant. Yes, motorways can be boring. You don’t have to accelerate, change gear or brake much, there’s relatively little steering input needed. The Sat Nav tells you what junction you need.

Automatic gearboxes, cruise control, power steering, even auto lights, and wipers do all the work for you.

The view is often slow passing scenery and it’s very easy for your mind to wander in these conditions.

Consider taking an alternative, more interesting route, perhaps on an A or B-road. Check your map for parallel routes or set your Sat Nav to avoid motorways.

Open a window. Cold air will liven you up for a brief period. Turn the air–conditioning to cold and direct a vent onto your face. Disengage your cruise control. Put the radio on or start a conversation with your passenger. Stop for a tea or coffee or caffeine drink as soon as it’s safely possible. Do this every two hours, to maintain your concentration.

Carry sufficient drinking water to keep you hydrated.

A good driver is always mentally alert, and motorway driving becomes like a mobile high-stake game of chess. You have to plan your route, anticipate traffic movement, and be ultra-observant while constantly checking speeds and distances in front and behind your vehicle.

Good drivers have excellent lane discipline and are always in the correct lane for their speed and planned route. They constantly observe the behaviour of other vehicles around them, including regular checking of their mirrors.

You should stay in the left-hand lane wherever possible, but don’t get so hung up on this that you’re constantly driving in and out of a slow lane.

Drivers on UK motorways often display poor lane discipline. This causes frustration and problems for other drivers and can even lead to crashes. You’ll often find traffic moving into the right-hand lane, to avoid day-dreamers in the middle lane. Inconsiderate drivers blocking a middle lane of the motorway are a common problem. Never be tempted to teach them a lesson. Don’t flash your headlights or sound the horn. Simply overtake them as safely and as soon as you can.

Driving faster than 70mph on UK motorways is illegal. Good drivers travel at an appropriate speed for the road conditions. However it’s easy for your speed to creep up in a modern car, so check your speedometer regularly, or use your cruise control.

Motorways are the UK’s safest roads. But they are still the scenes of numerous incidents and many are policed by speed regulation devices designed to maintain traffic safety.

Following the success of Vernon Hoyle’s recent recital, on Saturday October 13th Geoffrey Coffin, head of Principal Pipe Organs of York, will give a further recital on the newly restored and improved organ in Hatfield Church. Mr Coffin, a highly accomplished performer, was Assistant Organist at York Minster in the 1970s before founding his own organ building company. In 1992-3 Principal Pipe Organs restored and made significant tonal additions to the world-famous organ in York Minster.

Further details of Mr Coffin’s recital will be publicised at a later date.
