News, News, News, News, News…. HATFIELD WOODHOSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY. For the last meeting of the year, held as usual at Hatfield Woodhouse Working Men’s Club, one of our own members was the star turn. On Tuesday 2nd December, Maria Brack gave a flower arranging demonstration with an emphasis on Christmas decorations. Maria’s first subject was a small posy. After setting up a background of variegated holly, the colour was provided by pinks and white chrysanthemum (taken from a spray). After this, Maria made a table decoration. The green background was made of spruce and holly and ivy with cones providing texture. Colour was provided by red poinsettias and pale yellow chrysanthemums, with a red candle highlight at its centre. The contrast of red and pale yellow made a spectacular show. Maria then spoke about Christmas wreaths, and gave some ideas on what could be used to decorate these. Of particular interest was a demonstration of how to make the base ring for a wreath using silver birch twigs. And finally Maria gave ideas on what could be used as a focal point for Christmas decorations in a room, instead of a traditional Christmas tree. This was an arrangement of Twisted Hazel stems arranged in a silver effect container, the stems then being decorated with silver baubles, tinsel strips and white lights in the usual way. All demonstrations were done with materials which are reasonably accessible, so Society members may be going home and trying to produce something similar. At the end of meetings of the Society, the draw is made for the raffle. This month the first four prizes were donated by Maria, so four lucky people took home the posy, table arrangement, wreath, and hazel twig arrangement. The first meeting in the New Year will be on Tuesday 6th January At Hatfield Woodhouse Working Men’s Club, when the speaker will be David Parker from Epworth. All are welcome to our meetings.

68th Hatfield Scout Group Our family fun fireworks evening was very well supported and fun was had by all, playing games in the hall before a wide game by torchlight on the field, a hot dog supper, campfire songs and fireworks to round it all off. The Beavers have been to a District Bowling event with other Beavers from all over Doncaster! We won’t know which colony won ‘til we get to the Carol Service in town on December 9th which is for all beavers, cubs, scouts, explorers and leaders and will be supported by our Doncaster Scout Band. Here are the Beavers with our 2 local puppy walkers and their gorgeous puppies Aero and Querida. Derek and Anne brought the two puppies to show us and tell us all about how they are learning to be Guide Dogs for blind people. We gave them an ice-cream box filled with smartie tubes. The beavers had enjoyed eating the smarties first and then collected nearly £30 in total in the tubes to pass on to the Guide dogs. We also sponsor a guide dog puppy called Gizmo who looks just like Querida! Scouts are looking forward to freezer camp in the New Year. Hatfield Library News I hope you all had a good Christmas and would like to wish you all a Happy New Year from the volunteers at the library. It will be sad to clean the wonderful Christmas paintings off the windows. They were done by one of our volunteers who gave up his own time to do them for us. I am sure you will agree that Alpha did a marvellous job. It was lovely to welcome so many people to into the library during the Christmas Fayre. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves going round all the different stalls. The only thing missing was Christmas music but we are working on that for next year. I would like to thank Jan Tovey for the organisation and for including the library in the Fayre. Thank you to the volunteers who came in to set out the tables, make tea and tidy up. Finally thank you to everyone who came into the library. During the whole day approximately 400 people came through the door. DMBC will never believe our Stats for that Friday! I hope we have encouraged more people to use the library in the future. We have had about 80 new members since becoming a community library but we have room for more. At the moment we only have a few activities for children but are hoping to get funding to hold more especially in the holidays. The group of volunteers who run the Pre-School story time have done a fantastic job with a variety of activities for young children. If you have young children or grandchildren bring them along on Tuesday afternoons at 2pm. There is a list of stories and activities for each week. We also have the Bookstart Bear Club for young children. Children read or have books read to them. Each book earns a stamp in the passport. Six stamps earn a certificate. Some parents, grandparents or childminders bring children along to read to them and to play with the toys or do colouring in activities. Anyone passing the library might have noticed the new signage. It has been a long time coming but worth the wait. I must admit that I did not notice it immediately as I am concentrating on remembering the alarm number when I open the library. However, I did go straight back out to look when it was pointed out to me. I was pleased to find out that I was not the only one who hadn’t noticed! I think we were all used to the old sign and knew how long the wheels of officialdom take to turn so it took us by surprise when it finally happened. The men came to look at where the wifi will be going so things are moving there too. (Although we are not holding our breath) This will mean that people will be able to bring their ipads, tablets and laptops in to use. There will be two new computer classes starting in January. A five week beginners’ ipad/tablet course which will cost £20 (So if the children or grandchildren have bought you one for Christmas insisting you must move into the 21st century but don’t have the time to help you then this is the course for you) and a beginners’ internet course which will help you to do more on –line Ipad/tablet for beginners Enrolment Mon Jan 12th 10:15 Start Mon Jan 19th 10:15-12:15 Internet for beginners Enrolment Wed Jan 14th 10:15 Start Wed Jan 21st 10:15-12:15 The other groups will be running as usual after Christmas. Finally the committee was immortalised on camera when we were presented with a cheque for £200 by Asda. Our thanks go to them for their generosity. Christmas Celebrations at Travis Welcome to our Christmas report. This time of year is very busy especially at school, what with Christmas church services, Carols Around the Tree, Concerts and Christmas Fayres. This week we have been lucky enough to watch a wonderful Year 5 concert and today our parents joined us to celebrate Christmas with our Carols Around the Tree. Friends of Travis Christmas Fayre On Friday 5th December, Upper site was opened up to the Friends of Travis Christmas Fayre. There was lots of stalls around the whole site and even the library was transformed into Santa’s Grotto. The Year 6’s were asked to help out with some of the stalls including teddy tombola, white elephant, tuck shop, book stall, raffle and Christmas games. It was very busy especially the queues for Father Christmas. The luxury hot chocolate was a huge hit especially with the Year 6 helpers!!! The Fayre was very successful and we raised a staggering £1062. A big thank you to all the volunteers who gave up their time for the event. Harvey Our fantastic Christmas Celebration St Lawrence Church invited our school to sponsor a Christmas Tree in their Tree Festival. Each tree had a different carol and was to be presented in unique ways. Our Carol was “O’ Little Town of Bethlehem” which is where Jesus was born in a stable. We invited all the children to create a wondrous bauble which represented our carol and would add to our scene. The children worked with their parents as part of a home learning project to create a bauble. When all the baubles were collected in, they were shared between the church and our school tree. As reporters we were invited to decorate our church tree with the Year 2 adults. The baubles were inspiring to look at. We were very proud of the effort that everyone put into our baubles and they show how much we love God and his Son. Did you go into church and look at the trees? Ava and Mackenzie Carols Around the Tree As part of our Christmas celebration we invited our parents in to hear our spectacular singing. This afternoon was our Carols Around The Tree and we were split into our year groups. Year 3 and 4 performed together, Year 5 and 6 and then lower site were split into their classes to perform. Some of the songs we performed were Little Donkey, Jingle Bells, We wish you a Merry Christmas, Frosty the Snowman and many others. Milly said “My favourite song was “What child is this?” The hall was packed full of parents. We hope they had a wonderful time listening to us singing and we wish them a Happy Christmas. Milly and Alfie The Peace Child Year 5 have been working on a concert called “The Peace Child” which is about two tribes who absolutely despise each other. They can’t wait to get to each other but there is a raging river separating them, however they can still taunt and tease each other. Every person in Year 5 took part and had a speaking role in the concert. Some had more words than others but everyone did extremely well. All the audiences really enjoyed themselves and had a blast! Here are some of what the Year 5 and the teachers had to say about it: “We sung amazingly and did some super acting along with other great things.” “The determination we put into it was outstanding and it totally paid off.” “I thought it was fabulous!” The favourite song of all was “We’ll all be famous.” Year 5 Reporters

Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School Our New Nursery In January 2015, work will begin to transform the old toilets and conservatory into a classroom for nursery children. Until work is finished, this class will be held in our recently built breakfast club. We are looking forward to our first topic, ‘Which is the Biggest Dinosaur?’ Children will be investigating dinosaurs where the biggest and, indeed, how big they were. We also have lasagne served every three weeks and many other lovely dishes too. We are looking forward to our KS1 Christmas play featuring the Christmas story. The Difference Top 10 of 2014 Roll up, roll up folks. It is that time of year again. It is mince pies and endless repeats of The Pogues on the radio but also the time when I give a proverbial slap on the back to the people or groups who have helped make the village and surrounding areas a better place to live. Now before any of you spontaneously combust at being missed off the list of the year, please remember this is just a bit of fun. After all, the winners will only receive a bag of scampi fries and the appreciation of their community. And so, in no particular order, I suppose I better get this party started………. 1 People who pick up litter – I shake my head in despair at the amount of litter on the streets of Hatfield and so I applaud all those who take their time and make the effort to keep the village tidy. Is it me or do those yellow stickers on fly tipped waste around the lanes put the fear of god into people (not). If it is not fast food waste we see ripped up scratch cards and the time will have to come when we say enough is enough! So well done to all those who dispose responsibly and all those who pick up rubbish. 2 The Great Bay Horse Bake Off judges – Without this group of people I really think the bake off would have ended up more of a bun fight! I have never known pressure like it, and now when I sit in the pub and listen to Terry Hepworth and our Dave bragging, it makes me feel very proud to have created this monster. A huge thank you to Cath, Janet, Roseena, Andy, Gwen and Sally and to Michelle for the bunting. What an amazing day that was. 3 Richard Platt & Andy Cutts HTCC – Richard skippered the first team through a tricky season, keeping them in Division 1, and steadying the ship through some choppy waters. Hopefully the 2015 season will bring promotion. Andy successfully organised a sportsman’s dinner raising much-needed funds for the club and also providing a quality night of entertainment. All this not long after the sad loss of him mum. Farewell Mrs Cutts and many thanks for all your hard work and support within the sport. 4 Woodhouse Working Mens Club – I will admit that it’s been a long time since I visited, however, I must congratulate the committee and regulars who keep the club going. With the sad loss of the Robin Hood, the chippy and the post office it is important that Woodhouse keeps its facilities going. Hang on in there and if I win the lotto I promise to jazz things up and build a new chippy! 5 Responsible dog owners – As with the litter there has to be a time when we say “enough is enough” when it comes to dog waste on the paths of the area. There are now kids who genuinely believe that dog poo bags actually grow on trees. There are some trees where you have to rub your eyes at the amount of poo bags lobbed onto the branches. And then there are those owners who act responsibly, I applaud and respect them. 6 Joe from Casanova’s Pizza – Casanova’s has been providing quality pizza/pasta for what must be 30 years and Joe is a top chap. Sometimes we can take for granted such places, but we should never forget what it feels like to call up and for someone to know who you are and have a chat. It would be such a shame if one of the so-called ‘big boys’ muscled in and spoilt things. Well done to Joe and all his staff. 7 Hannah Brown & Family - Anyone who read my article last month will know all about Hannah and her bravery in the face of such tragic adversity. I sincerely wish Dave, Vel and all

the family all the best and hope that we can reach the £50,000 target for PACT. 8 Mick Glynn – Now then, this could be a slightly controversial choice. I tend to not get involved in politics, mainly due to the fact that the lack of sincerity and community spirit of some leave me shaking my head in disbelief. However, Mick is not included for his political allegiances or opinions, no, he is included because for the last six months he has almost singlehandedly protested about the lorries going through the village, especially those using Station Road. I might not agree with his politics but that should never stop me supporting someone who takes action or gets involved – and we all know those lorries are dangerous. They spoil the village and they need to be stopped. (And before anyone writes in, I know that there are two sides to most things but this is my opinion). 9 John Walkenden AKA Wogga - This man may not be known to many in the village, although to be fair he is a larger than life character and you may have come across him. So how come he has made my top 10? Well, if you have ever been in his company you would know why. John is probably one of the best blokes to share a few pints with. If ever my life is on a bit of a downer and not firing on all cylinders, a Sunday afternoon with Wogga can make you feel immeasurably better. And that's all I can say really – he is what is sometimes termed a "special" bloke. 10 Jamie and Gavin McDonnell - These two brothers have definitely put Dunscroft and Hatfield on the Map. Jamie won and defended his WBA title and Gavin is the new WBO intercontinental champ. Who would have thought that in the near future we could have a couple of world champions in the area. Well done chaps, fingers crossed Jamie unifies the titles and Gavin gets a world belt. We are rooting for you.
And so there you have my Top 10 of 2014. I would like to wish all the Arrow readers a Happy New Year and all the best. Maybe the fly tippers will get what they deserve, maybe the lorries will stop and maybe, just maybe, 2015 will be the year I find myself a good woman… PW AKA The Difference

Season's Greetings from Thorne Camera Club As the year draws to an end, Christmas is almost upon us, members of Thorne Camera Club are busy preparing some Christmassy images for exhibition in Thorne Library in support of their McMillan Nurses Coffee Morning. The exhibition will be available for viewing over the New Year period. Did you get a new camera for Christmas? Club members will be available to give help and advice on any aspect of photography, just go along on January 9th 7.30pm to a special 'Digital Clinic' evening. There are many different types of camera represented among members, so someone should have the knowledge to help you out. Or perhaps it is a problem you have with printing, or processing your pictures? The members will try to give advice. All you have to do is to go along to the Methodist Church small Hall, give £3.00 and chat to the members who'll be there to help you. Refreshments are served and a selection of members images will be shown to round off the evening. Everybody welcome. When Martin Litchfield CPAGB came to judge a competition, theme Nature, he was astonished by the number and high standard of entries. He had a difficult time choosing the images with, in his opinion, the best qualities, but eventually decided on 'Coot' by Allen Denby, 'Only a Rose' by Pete Spate and 'Mandarin Duck' by Lynda Rhodes as his top three, scoring 20, 19 and 18 respectively. Admitting his preference for simple, colourful images, he was amazed at the variety of plants and animals members had managed to photograph, with some geological features thrown in as well. Congratulations not only to the high scorers, but to all members for the high standard of work and improvements made in the past year. On a winning streak, Allen also won the raffle, along with Patricia Woodward but ticket Pink 555 was unclaimed. In a friendly, fun, Knock-out competition, theme In Your Garden, Steve Hardwick's 'Latch ' and Jim Howard's 'Sunlit Poppies' were favourites, followed by John Hookway's 'Strawberry Time' Phil Carolan's 'Garden Perrenial' and 'Blackberry Surprise', and David Ulyett's 'Pan' . Members voted in several rounds as photos were eliminated until the last two remained. What an array of amazing things members have in their gardens! Without the help and support of local people, less would have been achieved this year. Local businesses display advertising posters, source equipment the club needs, offer help and advice, donate items to the club, as do individuals too. The members are particularly grateful to Terry Clarke at Carlton House Computers in Moorends, Jack's Discounts, Flowers by Design, and especially Karren Wake at Thorne Times, among others who have been very helpful to the club, and hopefully this mutual support will continue in the future. Someone has been going from door to door on my street and I’m concerned they might not be a legitimate trader. What should I do? As a general rule it is worth trusting your instincts – if an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Scammers often use cold calling and doorstep sales to target victims, so before agreeing to anything or signing anything first tell someone you trust about the offer. Having this conversation with a family member, friend, or a good neighbour could stop you from losing money. If a trader is offering you a deal take a moment to check out their details. Ask the trader if they belong to a professional organisation, such as TrustMark, and if they say they do, then phone the organisation or look on their website to check this is true. Don’t agree to a deal on the spot that you have any reason to doubt. Legitimate traders should be happy for you to take their details and say you need more time to make a decision. Avoid handing over money before a job is started. A reliable trader won’t ask you to do this as they should have the money to cover materials until they are paid. If you are concerned about an offer, think you may have been caught out by a rogue trader, or are concerned for a neighbour, you should call the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on our helpline on 03454 04 05 06. If you've fallen for a scam, report it to the Police and you can also report it to Action Fraud. Doncaster Advanced Motorists Top Tips For Driving in Winter Weather A very merry Christmas to all our readers. If the weather is bad, drive only if it is necessary. If the journey is necessary, drivers should ensure their car is properly prepared and they know how to cope with changing road conditions. Take it slow and allow extra time for the journey, even if it is the usual work or school run. Other traffic on the road will be driving slower. In snow or ice, slow down and keep well back from the vehicle in front. When roads are slippery, it will take ten times longer to stop so drivers need to look a long way ahead and plan to move lanes as necessary Use low gears to help keep traction, especially on hills, and use gears to restrain speed on downhill sections to avoid the need to brake The road in front of vehicles clearing snow is likely to be worse than the road behind. Don’t pass these vehicles Check the windscreen washer is topped up with windscreen washer fluid for the appropriate outside temperature and that the wiper blades are clean. Drivers also need a clear view out of all windows not just the windscreen Turn on headlights to see and be seen. Bad weather causes poor visibility for all motorists Pack an emergency kit (such as warm outdoor clothes, a reflective jacket, a torch, and a fully charged mobile phone.) Drivers should remember to be cautious at all times, check the weather forecast before heading off on their journey, and prepare for familiar, short journeys as well as long ones. WHAT’S ON? Hatfield Local and Natural History Group The group was established 10 years ago and meets fortnightly in The Barn on Monday afternoons from 2 - 4 p.m. Meetings are informal, usually with a speaker giving an illustrated talk followed by refreshments with a chance to socialise. We have a wide range of speakers who are enthusiastic and knowledgeable about their subjects, sometimes humorous, but always very informative. “Local” does not always mean Hatfield but has included Yorkshire and adjoining counties at times. We also have one or 2 organised visits to local places of interest and an annual Christmas Lunch. Members pay a subscription 3 times a year to cover room hire and speaker’s expenses (usually around £5 - £10) this has been helped by a small grant from Hatfield Town Council towards costs. Visitors pay £2 a meeting including refreshments. New members are always welcome so if you have an interest in Local or Natural History or just want a regular afternoon out with the chance to meet new people and learn something new please come and join us!
