Celebrating Success at Sheep Dip Lane Primary School Congratulations – We’ve achieved the LPPA award (Leading, Parents, Partnership Award) On Friday 11th October school achieved the LPPA award. Over the last 15 months, we have been working hard to invest in parents for the achievement of our children.

The Leading Parent Partnership Award (LPPA) is a national award that provides a coherent framework through which schools and other educational organisations can deliver effective parental engagement.

Why Sheep Dip? We believe that parental engagement is a powerful lever for raising achievement in schools and there is much research to show the value of schools and parents working together to support pupils’ learning. We began this journey with a vision to work more effectively with our parents to support children’s learning and development thus overall improving pupil progress and achievement.

Well done to everybody who has supported us on this journey – governors, school staff, pupils, community partners, parents and carers.

Royal Mail Christmas stamp competition On 17th September 2013 Royal Mail announced 140 regional finalists in its Christmas Stamp Design Competition. The finalists were selected from more than 240,000 entries across the UK, divided into 12 competition regions. Two finalists from each region will now go through to the national final.

Bailey Conway from Sheep Dip Lane Primary school was chosen as one of the finalists from our region !

Well doneBailey!! (Another success for Sheep Dip.) We wish Bailey good luck as his design now goes forward into the national final.

I am writing this anticipation of the coffee morning with a difference being a huge success.

Judging the amount of support I have received already we should raise a fantastic amount for a very worthwhile cause.

HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY As an alternative to Bonfire Night, Hatfield Woodhouse Amateur Gardening Society held its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 5th November at Hatfield Woodhouse Working Men's Club. This was the time for looking back at the previous year, and looking forward to the next, and there was a good attendance of members for it. This was the last time that our Chairlady, Dorothy Elvy would be taking the lead. Dorothy retired from the Chair of the Society during the meeting after a good spell in the position, leading the Society through many Shows and events. Before the formal part of the evening, Dorothy was presented with a bouquet and gift token in appreciation of all that she has done.

In her last Chairlady's Address to the Society, Dorothy summarised the activities for the past year. In particular, she noted that once again we had had two successful Shows.

This was especially so for the Autumn Show, where the judges had commented on the very high standard of the entries. The Society had had evening visits to Hippopottering Nursery at East Lound near Haxey, David Chapple's farm at Boston Park, and a day out to Sledmere House. Talks to the Society had included ones on Japanese Maples(Acers), Compost in its many guises, and on a non gardening evening, A Railway Journey. We have also had a small and welcome increase in membership this year.

The committee for the next year is: President/Chairman John Brown; Treasurer Ian Harrison; Minute Secretary Rita Chafen; Membership Secretary Brenda White; Trophy Secretary Geoff Firth; Welfare Secretary Pam Banks; Raffle Secretary Joan Brown; Committee Members Lesley Colwill and Dorothy Elvy.

Following the AGM, Pam Banks entertained us with a short quiz.

We are already looking forward to next March when the Spring Show will be held on Saturday 15 March at the Working Men's Club. Schedules are now available. The usual classes for Hyacinths, Daffodils/Narcissi, Tulips and Crocuses are all again present together with other Plant/Flower, Produce and Handicrafts classes.

The next meeting of the Society will be on Tuesday December 3 at Hatfield Woodhouse Working Men's Club commencing at 7-30. The topic is yet to be decided. Everybody is welcome to these meetings.

The Middle Ages…

Over recent months I have been trying to decide whether I have arrived at what is more commonly termed as “middle-aged”. Although there is no clearly-defined start or end date for this period in a person’s life, I am aware I have adopted some tell-tale traits of stereotypical middle age. For example, the other day I almost spontaneously combusted with rage after witnessing someone throw a bag full of fast food waste as they drove along Station Road. At one point I even contemplated driving after them in order to give them a piece of my mind and to remind them of how this anti social behaviour affects the community. There, I have just given you another example, I used the term “anti social behaviour” instead of labelling their behaviour “yobbish”, or “the act of a cretin”. That’s not all, another example of my drift towards ‘the Ken Barlow years’ sees me increasingly attracted to the headlines in the broadsheets. I can’t help myself from commenting on the state of the world today, and I only frequent the pubs in town where you can get served, and hear yourself speak, oh, and get served real ale. It gets worse; I also have an alarming attraction to the thought of a cheese board at the end of a meal out. Yep, I know. To cap it all I have become an expert in the art of “dad dancing” at weddings and other social gatherings. My only escape is to make an effort to remind myself of those times when I was still able to cut the mustard and stay out past midnight without looking at my watch and hoping someone suggests that we call it a day and go for something to eat. I took another trip down memory lane when walking Mr Mole towards the Jubilee playing fields – this was the place where I first kissed a girl on the lips.

Now I hope this recollection does not cause those involved any embarrassment and I have taken the option of not changing the names to protect the innocent. The girl in question, my first ever ‘snog’, was none other than Lisa Hunter. Lisa, along with her good friend Julie Rylands, were colleagues of mine and my then best mate Neil Buckley in Mrs Jones’ class at the local Manor School. Now Neil and I were both from the sleepy backwater of Hatfield Woodhouse where things took their time to happen. I have previously mentioned the hullabaloo that was caused when the village chippy introduced curry sauce onto the menu, so you can only begin to imagine what happened in the village when the Robin Hood took its first ever order of scampi fries. Needless to say, my and Neil’s would-be dates were from the bright lights of Hatfield. They were sophisticated, they were street wise and they knew how to kiss boys. I will never forget the scene. It was a late autumn day, sunny with browning leaves on the trees but passably warm enough to be out in a t-shirt. We found ourselves having an impromptu after-school date at the rope swing which took up residence in some tall willow trees that grew beside school. Whilst Neil and I were busy attempting to impress our beaus by seeing how high we could swing each other and then leap off into the undergrowth, Lisa and Julie had other ideas. They suggested we took a walk into a local corn field that ran between the trees and a local factory.

It was as we all lay in the corn that they decided it was the right time to go for the kill, so to speak.

Julie clearly had an eye on Neil and performed a manoeuvre second only to Maverick and Goose in Top Gun. In the blink of eye Neil was a fly in Julie’s web and he was powerless to put up any kind of a fight. They were well and truly swopping gobs and as I observed, a little gob-smacked myself, I could see that Lisa was also locking in on her prey. Now, I thought of myself as a brave young chap at that time but from what I could see from the expression on Neil’s face, this kissing lark wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. And so, as Lisa made her approach, I decided that the best form of defence was to escape as fast as my little legs could take me. Lisa, however, was not to be outdone and was equally as determined to see her mission through to a successful conclusion. The pursuit was on. If you can imagine a gazelle frantically weaving its way across a Serengeti Plain in a desperate attempt .

to rid themselves of a hungry leopard, well that is what I looked like as a dodged, bobbed and weaved. Lisa on the other hand was accomplished in the role of leopard and was enjoying this chase I Slowly but surely she reeled me in, eventually delivering a sliding tackle that Dave Mackay would have been proud of. I was caught, and before I knew it she was kneeling on my hands and chest and approaching me – lips slightly apart - with gusto..

I will spare you the gory details, except for raising one point that even today puzzles me. What should one do with your tongue in these situations? A puzzle for most adults let alone a 10-year-old kid saddled like a Suffragette at feeding time. My mind raced at 300mph as I ran through my options.

Should I go with the ‘sidey-sidey’ approach or a quirkier ‘inny-outy’? I seem to recollect that I decided to opt for neither, dabbling with one of my own which I later christened the ‘Zanussi’ which basically consisted of going round and round, something I seem to remember causing Lisa much amusement. After what seemed like an eternity my ordeal was over and I had popped my kissing amateur – more importantly I could hold my head up high in the playground from that day forward. I often thank Lisa when I see her on my travels for securing my membership of the kissy club. Both Julie and Lisa have ended up being good friends of mine in my life but what, you may ask, happened to Neil? Well, after Julie had taught him to breathe through his ears he was well and truly away and quickly graduated with an advanced technical certificate in snogging.

And so ladies and gentlemen as I fret and worry about slipping into middle age, I can still offer a smile at my journey to its door. There have been many ups and downs; I have made numerous mistakes, some of which I have learnt from and others which I wouldn’t change for toffee. I would, however, ask that should I make the mistake of wearing my jumper across the back of my shoulders, a la Ken Barlow, I would like someone to shoot me in the back of the head and put me out of my misery.

Finally, may I take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and New Year. Please take the time to look in on your elderly neighbours, why not invite them round for a sherry and a chat, I am certain they would love it if you made the offer. As for me, I will be spending Christmas reading the Guardian newspaper in the pub, along with my half of Wobbly Bob real ale in my comfortable elasticated slacks.

CHRISTMAS & PETS

With Christmas just around the corner it’s important to consider how festive celebrations may affect our pets.

With a little pre planning, accidents and upsets can be avoided leaving us all free to enjoy a merry Christmas together.

FOOD HAZARDS However tempting do not let pets over indulge.

Should they over eat or ingest inappropriate food it can lead to stomach upsets and diarrhoea.

Avoid giving leftovers, in particular poultry skin and bones which can splinter, get lodged in the throat or puncture a pets intestines.

Never feed pets chocolate! It contains substances toxic to dogs which can result in vomiting, convulsions and in some cases death.

Raisins and sultanas can also be toxic and lead to kidney disease so should never be given as a treat.

DECORATION HAZARDS Brightly coloured baubles and tinsel are exciting objects to pets, but if eaten they can cause blockages and internal problems which could require surgery to remove.

Make fairy lights and electrical cords chew proof from inquisitive cats, dogs and even rabbits.

Beware of poisonous plants – holly, poinsettia, ivy, yew and mistletoe are all extremely toxic so keep well out of reach.

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS Remember loud music, unexpected bangs from crackers/poppers and unfamiliar visitors can unsettle pets. Always make them a priority and provide them with a quiet area away from the celebrations.

To ensure your pets safety always buy gifts from a reputable pet shop or veterinary surgery.

Be prepared – check your vets Christmas opening hours and keep their number by the phone.

We hope that these tips will help to ensure that pets and owners enjoy a happy healthy Christmas together.

What an Impressive ICT Day! On the last day of our Autumn half term, we had an exciting ICT day. In the morning we could choose from different activities which related to the ICT topic. This day was carefully planned by our ICT leaders Miss Hilton and Mr McCurdy.

E-Safety I took part in the photography group which was led by Mrs Cousins. We had to take different photos of objects and people or we could take pictures which told a story.

On the other hand, Kimberley did a completely different activity which was animation. In this group they were using Lego to make a scene and then Digi-Blues to video the scene. We then uploaded the images onto the computers and even added our own voice overs!

In the afternoon, we were working in groups of 3/4 to create posters for our presentation about internet safety. Topics included: Online gaming, Social networking, Staying safe on the internet and what to watch out for on the computers. Our aim was to share these messages with the Year 3 children.

As well as planning our morning, Miss Hilton also organised our afternoon so we’d like to say a special thank you to her and all the staff. Without, Miss Hilton, this day would not have been possible.

Imaginative ICT Day! In the morning we could choose from a variety of exciting activities which included;  Animation, where we used lego to make our own mini movie,  Self –portraits on Dazzle to add colour and lines to our faces  E-twinning where we communicated with other schools from around the world.  History of ICT where we researched about how computers have developed and changed.  Photography where we could experiment with the different camera shots, such as sepia.  Videoing where we used the Digi-Blues to video each other.  Wii, where we created an interactive character for a video game.

We have learnt that ICT is not just about working on computers!

Daft Digi-Duck!

In the afternoon of our ICT day we listened to a very funny story called Digi-Duck. It was about a duck who liked to play on a game called Farmyard Friends. He was sent an embarrassing picture of

one of his friends. He was tempted to send it to his friends but was shown in a dream what would happen if he did. This taught us that you have to be kind in real life aswell as on the computers.

We did lots of activities linked with this story such as: creating posters, making the animals out of modelling clay and also face masks. We also acted out the story as a puppet show. It was an enjoyable day.

It took about four to five weeks to plan the whole day.

Why did you organise the ICT day?

We organised it because we wanted to show that ICT is not just about computers and that you have to stay safe around computers.

Would you do it again?

Yes we would as we enjoyed seeing all the children having fun throughout the day.

NORTH EAST DONCASTER CAB INTRODUCE “ENERGY BEST DEAL EXTRA” Over the years North East Doncaster CAB have run a series of Energy Best Deal sessions whereby community groups have received advice and information on how to get the best deal on their gas and electricity, how to switch providers, and how to claim any grants or benefits to which they are entitled. These sessions are always popular and well-attended.

Feedback shows however that a significant number of people who have attended the sessions find it difficult to take the follow-up actions needed on their own. To help reduce this problem Citizens Advice have developed the Energy Best Deal Extra (EBDx) advice project to provide access to further support directly from these sessions.

Ofgem have identified that it is important to take into account the needs of the following particular groups of consumers; • those of pensionable age • those that have a disability • those that are chronically sick • those on low incomes • and those living in rural areas.

North East Doncaster CAB operating the EBDx service are able to offer all consumers face to face advice at their offices at Thorne and Stainforth. EBDx advice appointments will be with qualified generalist or specialist advisers. In addition to matters relating to relief from fuel poverty, energy and thermal efficiency measures, advisers will support clients (as appropriate) with the full range of CAB support services such as identifying and claiming benefits, and dealing with debt.

Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School has been really busy since our last article. We’ve been on some fun trips, had some exciting celebrations in school and started loads of new topics. Let us tell you about what we have been up to.

We have just finished our excellent Everybody Writes Day. Each year the whole school takes an idea and uses it to practice and extend our writing skills. This year our theme was “Bonfire Night!”

There were so many things to find out about and write about. Mrs Goodwin (who looked very odd in her Guy Fawkes beard!) introduced the fun and exciting day. She told us all about the Gunpowder Plot and encouraged us to do our best. We now have lots of new work to show off in our library. There were lots of different types of poems, some firework safety posters and even some stories with persuasive arguments! Here’s one of our favourite haikus from Sonny in Year 4: The booming bright light, colourful sparkles explode, the dangerous sound.

We’ve also started a new round of school clubs, like the Drama Club and American Football Club.

Here’s what some of our Gardening Club had to say about what they’ve been doing. We have been working hard to transform the area behind year 5 and 6.

We have had children from all across the school participating in their lunch times. In our first session we: planned and designed our garden; we were identifying resources; we planned scarecrows to make to protect our planting. We’ve now managed to clear the forest of weeds and are looking forward to getting to planting.

Years 3 and 4 enjoyed a school trip recently. They went to Thorne Fire Station to learn all about local heroes and the work they do. Here’s what some of them had to say about it.

“I loved having a go on the hose. It was really powerful and sent water everywhere!” – Mason.

“Firemen and women do a very important job. They help us by putting out fires and keeping us safe. They have lots of different tools to help them, including a saw which can cut through a car. – Natalie.

Years 5 and 6 were so excited about finishing their World War 2 Blitz topic they invited all their parents to come and celebrate with some songs from that era and some refreshments – the honey cookies were lovely, but no one was very impressed with the carrot fudge! They were also very proud to show off all the work they’d done over the topic from Blitz skylines using pastels to poems and letters written about evacuees.

Continuing our theme of inviting parents into school, everyone was really delighted with how well the Harvest festival turned out! Mr Ross and Mrs Kantecki went head-to-head in a Ready, Steady, Cook Harvest Challenge.

They were ably helped by two teams of children from each year.

They had to make a healthy packed lunch from random ingredients in the time it took for the rest of the school to sing three Harvest songs. They made some bizarre food – a peanut butter and bacon wrap and a chicken and pineapple kebab for example, but it was great fun!

We thought you might like to know about some of the many things we have coming up before Christmas. Did you know both Key Stages are putting on Christmas shows? Well, they are and all the teachers are really excited about them. We are also joining up with our friends at Coppice School to put on a carol performance in the Methodist Church. On top of all that, we have our Christmas Fayre which is always a great success!

Doncaster Advanced Motorists See and Be Seen Dear readers, Despite the winter weather and the poor visibility we have to put up with, many drivers seem curiously reluctant to put their dipped headlights on.

Perhaps this is a hangover from the days when cars had only basic electronics: older drivers will remember that there was a risk that having too many electrical appliances on might prevent the battery charging and so lead to starting problems.

But those days are fortunately long gone. The typical modern car is capable of running its headlights without a problem. So why the reluctance to light up?

If visibility deteriorates for any reason - not just darkness, but that familiar winter drizzle - you shouldn't hesitate to put your dipped headlights on.

A good rule of thumb is to make a point of turning on your headlights whenever you need to use your windscreen wipers.

You may feel that you can still see well enough, so why bother? But what you can see is not the whole story: you should aim to see and be seen. Other road users may not have eyesight as good as yours. And in gloomy conditions, you need to look particularly carefully in your mirrors before changing lanes. It may be that the driver who hasn't "lit up" is attempting to overtake you.

If the weather is foggy, by all means use your fog lights. But use your fog lights sparingly. If you leave them on after the mist has disappeared, you are causing a major irritant for other drivers.

Rear fog lights left on after they are needed when the mist has cleared are positively dangerous: they can also mask the visibility of brake lights and so lead to needless braking by the vehicles following.

WHAT’S ON? St Marys Art Group at St Marys Church Community Centre Stainforth.

We are a small group of people who meet on Thursday each week at 10am for 2 hours except when our teacher Dave Woolass comes to help us at 1pm monthly.
