Friends of Quarry Park

There is always something to do on Quarry Park, and volunteers are there most days with their bags and pickers exterminating the litter which has been especially bad during the last few weeks. Then there's the very important maintenance of the benches. The bolts on the Covid Memorial bench were getting a little loose, so they have been replaced and now all secure again thanks to Paul's expertise.

In between all the serious work the volunteers like to get together socially and last month 13 of us enjoyed a meal and a few drinks at the Chace. It makes a nice change to 'get scrubbed up' and get to know each other a bit more which is difficult when you've got your heads in a bramble bush, down a hole or under a bench!

Sunshine and blue skies greeted us on 6th September for our Work Party. Our Ranger Sam joined 14 volunteers who split into groups and got started on their tasks. The trees in Vulcan Copse were mulched and the long grass around them trimmed; the hedges at Carrot Corner had a good trim and tidy up and both sides of the zip wire path were cleared of overgrown brambles. Other jobs included varnishing the newly repaired Covid Memorial bench, cutting back near the car park, and spreading grass seed near the picnic table. The litter picking team did a great job as always, collecting 2 large bags of rubbish. Afterwards, we all enjoyed refreshments with Julie and Debra’s delicious cakes and blackberry & apple crumble with blackberries picked from the park. Excellent work as always from an awesome team.

The Get Doncaster Moving Mumbler Challenge Trail has now ended, and we hope that lots of children have enjoyed trying to meet all the active challenges in the woods.

Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, including litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next events are scheduled for Friday 4th October and Friday 1st November 10am – 12 noon, meet at the new picnic table. Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144.

Hello and welcome to another crime prevention article. This will be my last article as I retire at the end of this month, following over 49 years’ service with South Yorkshire Police. I will be ending my involvement with crime prevention, but unfortunately crime does not stop so everyone must continue to be aware of what is required to keep themselves and their property secure.

I know that I mention it in many of these articles, but I have to mention again the prevalence of houses being burgled by offenders snapping the door lock. If you have a Euro profile cylinder door lock make sure that it complies with either of the security standards TS007 3 star or SS312 Diamond standard. If you look at the face of the lock just under the keyhole, you want to see an image of three small stars etched into the metal or an image of a small diamond. This indicates that the lock reaches the police approved standard and it acceptable to your insurance company. Please check you lock and if necessary, have it replaced by a locksmith who is a member of the Master Locksmiths’ Association. Their members will fit the correct lock and charge a fair price.

We have just had a late burst of decent weather and you like me, probably spent some time in the garden. One important task that I review annually is checking my garden security. When you clean your garden tools it’s an ideal time to make sure that you have marked them with your postcode. Spades, forks, and other tools should be visibly marked using an engraving tool on the handle or metal of the blade. Wooden handled tools should be marked in a similar fashion, and I use a soldering iron to burn my postcode onto the handle. Not many thieves steal to keep; It’s all about raising money to support habits. Make it unattractive or reduce its value and it is less attractive. If you have a shed where you keep gardening equipment, check the security. Use one way or clutch head screws on the hinges and padlock. These screws cannot be unscrewed once they are secured. It prevents thieves from simply unscrewing the hinges to gain entry. You do not even need to replace every screw with one of these, simply replace every other screw. If your shed has a light and you aren’t likely to be going into the shed at night, remove the bulb. During the winter, the only person likely to be going into your shed is a thief. Do not make it easy for them. You can purchase a steel cable specifically designed for sheds. These are approx. 3 metres long, loop through and round your garden equipment, and then secured to the floor. If thieves attempt to take anything, it’s very difficult if it is secured to everything else in the shed.

Stay safe and secure and I wish you all the best. Eamonn

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST

We have an exciting bit of news for you. Do you remember when the UK held the 2012 Olympics and various flag bearers around the country were given the honour of carrying the Olympic torch? In Doncaster that honour fell to Ben Parkinson and afterwards he very kindly donated his Olympic scarf to our charity to raise funds. Jeannette Fish, who was our founder member until she passed away in May 2018, kept it with the intention of auctioning it off. The scarf has recently come to light and we would like to fulfil Jeannette’s wishes by putting it up for auction. It seems an appropriate time to do it with the success of the Paris Paralympic team in September. The scarf has the date “29.08.12” at the top with the words “talent, pride and determination” underneath it, plus “Our greatest team” along the bottom. It measures approximately 34 inches/86 cms square. We would please request that all bids be sent to our office Email address: info@dcdt.co.uk along with your name and contact details to reach us no later than 25th October 2024.

We would like to remind you about our annual Memory Tree which will be held in the Frenchgate Centre from Monday, 25th November to Saturday, 7th December (excluding Sunday, 1st December) from 10am to 3pm daily. We have an interesting variety of new tokens to purchase in memory of your loved ones.

Our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (passageway to the left of “Bake Battle & Roll), first floor (lift available), Room 104. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. As the office is not fully manned it is best to Email or telephone in advance if you are thinking of coming to see us. Don’t forget to Email us your bid by 25th October. Good luck everyone!

Hatfield Community Library

The Summer Holidays are coming to an end and we can look back and with pleasure and a few sighs at the wonderful time we have had. Our celebrations for our 10 year anniversary, 7 children’s events, and an open day for members. The only hiccup was the van breakdown on the A17 which prevented the Lab Rascals team from arriving for the Dry ice session-we hope to rearrange this for half term- and a bit of disappointment when a few people who booked for events did not turn up.

At our volunteer celebration we managed to get nearly all our present volunteers together. We were joined by some previous volunteers, some representatives of the groups who use the library, our Local M.P. Lee Pitcher and some of the Hatfield Town councillors and Doncaster councillors who have supported us over the years.

We were entertained by a group of actors who perform at Cast and an Acapella group, Harmonix Choir, who finished off the afternoon with some lovely songs.

On Tuesday we held an open house for members to join us for a complimentary tea/ coffee and cake as a thank you for their support. Two of our groups (Games Cafe and Readers' Group) were in the library and joined in the celebrations. Our children’s events went well. These included 4 lego Robotic sessions, 3 Planetarium sessions in the church, only 1 lab Rascals because of the afore mentioned breakdown and Imagination Games.

REGULAR EVENTS. If you want to attend our regular or one off sessions, I would recommend checking before you set off just in case the session has been cancelled for an unforseen reason. We are also a warm space so people are welcome to come in for a coffee, a chat, do the jigsaw, play a game or work on your laptop/device. We also welcome carers/parents who bring young children in to read our picture books or play with toys. It is a lovely space to give the children a change of scenery and have a new experience. Refreshments are always available for a charge of £1 for a drink and biscuit.

MONDAY - Wriggle, Rhyme and Storytime 10-11am (free). This session is an enjoyable one for lots of young children. There is a range of activies for the children- singing, dancing (well wiggling) and generally having a good time Parents/carers can stay on and have a coffee while the children play with the toys. (free activity). Bridge Club 1pm (free activity) New comers are welcome Refreshments provided £1. 7-8:30, Gentle Hatha Yoga, This is extra class started to give people more chance of coming to enjoy our yoga sessions with Jane. Needles and Pins 10am.(twice a month) Bring your own work and chat with like-minded people or ask for advice about a project you might want to start. (Each person pays £1.50 which covers refreshments and a meal out)

TUESDAY. Games café 10:00-12:30 Join us in the library to play a variety of games including Mahjong. Apparently anybody who tries this game soon becomes a fan. I asked if Mahjong was a difficult game to play and was told it can be easy or difficult. The easy game is a bit like gin rummy then it can be played at a higher level if you want. The other players are always willing to help beginners. If there are other games that you would like to play, come along and start a group. Refreshments are provided for the small charge of £1. Come to observe to see if you would like to join in (Free activity). PCSO drop from 10am. Tuesday September 10th Readers’ groups. The cost is £6 a session WEDNESDAY. Art Class 10:00-12:30 Tuition from an artist is available to help beginners and experienced artists. New members are welcome. You do not have be good at art to enjoy this class. Recent members had little or no art experience If you don’t have any equipment, there is some which you can use to have a go. If you are not sure, come along to see what the group is doing.(£30 for 4 weeks) Refreshments £1. Yoga (gentle/ chair yoga) 3:30-5pm £6. This is a lovely session for people who have trouble getting up and down off the floor or have some health problems. Some new members I have spoken to recently have found it helpful and are really enjoying it. Yoga is a really good way to help you to keep supple, strengthen muscles and improve your mobility.

Friday sing- a- long 6:30-7:30 Come and join us for an enjoyable hour (or so) of singing popular songs. If you can sing that would be great but the idea is for anyone who wants to sing with a group to come and enjoy themselves. Singing releases dopamine and endorphins, the feel-good chemicals in the brain that make you feel uplifted and happy. It also helps to take your mind off any problems in your life even for a short while. Dr. Xhan on “Morning Live”was talking about this just recently. We do have a charge of £4 which includes refreshments.

OTHER SERVICES - Computers. Library members can use the computers with no charge for two hours. It is worth joining the library to be able to do this. Joining is free. If you are interested in your family history, you can use Ancestry or Find my Past to research your family. It is quite an addictive pastime once you get started. However, we do not turn away non-library members for an emergency session ie home printer/computer not working or accessing benefits.

Printing/photocopying/faxing. Lots of people are coming to the library to use our printing and photocopying services from their devices or emailing them to us for a reasonable charge. We have printed many, many return labels, plane and event tickets etc. or photocopied documents for official purposes. If you are a library member, you can use our computers to print items. Or you can email your printing job to us to print off for you. We also print for non-library members.
