THORNE CAMERA CLUB

The club started the new season with members meeting for an informal social at the 'Punch Bowl' eager to discuss the promising programme for the coming autumn session and reminisce on the summer outing destinations and the photographic opportunities that they provided.

The 'Summer Photo-shoots' were completed with the 'York Evening Walk' that was very well popular as York always provides excellent photographic opportunities whether it be street, people, architectural or landscapes and a local visit to the Hatfield Moors, the luckily weather was fine and dry for members to photograph the varied flora and fauna that can be found on the moors. Both occasions were very enjoyable and a good time was had by all who attended. The programme for September - October

The capturing of sharp action images of sport, birds in flight, etc. or motion blur images in street photography or landscapes with water/cloud movement can be achieved by the use of the 'Shutter Priority' mode on the camera. In this mode the photographer sets the shutter speed (a high shutter speed will 'freeze' the motion and a low shutter speed will give motion blur) and the ISO setting, allowing the camera will calculate the aperture required to give the correct exposure. For those who are not familiar with setting the ISO value it can be set to 'Auto' and the camera will select the appropriate ISO as well.

If a high shutter speed is chosen in order the freeze the motion the camera will set a wide aperture (the widest the camera or the attached lens on the camera will allow) and will give a shallow 'Depth of field', if a slow shutter speed is set the camera will set a narrow aperture and give a deep 'Depth of Field' but beware that if the shutter speed is too low a tripod may be necessary to avoid 'camera shake'. Spend time experimenting with various shutter speeds and note their effects.

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST

We would like to thank everyone who supported us during the summer at two events where we had a stall. At Bentley Gala on 16th July we made £92.36. On 19th August at Auckley Show we made £233.50.

As we seem to be heading towards the year end at an increasing pace (!) we have some dates for your diary. Our annual Memory Tree will take place once again in the Frenchgate Centre. It will start on Monday, 27th November and finish on Saturday, 9th December 2023, excluding Sunday, 3rd December.

Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers will be holding their annual Charity Christmas Concert at Doncaster Minster on Saturday, 16th December from 7.00-9.30pm. We will give you further details about both events in the November magazine.

Doncaster fundraising team goes the distance to raise money for darts

This November, a group of colleagues and Trustees at darts - Doncaster’s award-winning participatory arts charity - are hitting the streets and running the Doncaster City 10k to raise funds for their charity. As well as raising money through sponsorship and generous donations, the team want to raise awareness of the work they do locally, and the fact that they operate as a charity, relying on funding to continue running arts programmes across Doncaster.

“As a charity, we can only exist through fundraising. We rely heavily on generous grants from local businesses, trusts and foundations to keep afloat, but by running the 10k in aid of darts, we really want to get the local community on board and show how we can come together to raise money for a worthwhile cause.” -

Remaining free or low-cost and open to all is essential to the mission of all of darts’ programmes. This opens up access to the arts and an essential creative outlet for people who might never otherwise take part in opportunities like Art Club or Singing for Memory, or discover new skills through art. As a participatory arts charity, darts relies solely on fundraising to continue its muchneeded work across communities in Doncaster.

THE FRIENDS OF QUARRY PARK

On Wednesday 23rd August the Doncaster Naturalists led a session at Quarry Park.

In total,16 people attended and we split into 2 groups to walk around the area and learn more about the wildlife in the park.

The wildflower area was of particular interest, the Naturalists helped us to identify some of the plants in the wildflower mix. It wasn’t just about flora and fauna - the physical history of the site as a quarry meant that there was time spent looking at the unique geology of Quarry Park.

A walk through the woodland highlighted the impressive array of fungi which form a crucial part of Quarry Park’s eco-system. There was a focus on “galls”, these are growths on trees usually caused by insects who alter the natural growth of trees to create protective areas for their larval offspring.

It was fascinating to hear that what many assumed were flowers on the dogroses near the bird-feeding area was actually a gall called “Robin's Pincushion”. Robin’s Pincushion is hard to miss as it turns bright red. It’s the home to wasp larvae who will eventually eat the red “pincushion” over the winter months before they mature and fly away next spring. This was just one of many examples of the incredible things on Quarry Park we may walk past every day.

It was agreed by all that the walk really helped to demonstrate how unique and wonderful Quarry Park is as an environment. The mix of woodland, grassland and wildflowers provide so many opportunities to stop and look at what is around. Thank you to the Doncaster Naturalists for sharing some of their knowledge. The two hours went so quickly, hopefully there will be opportunities to host them again - as there’s so much more to explore!

It was another busy morning for our team on 1st September, and thankfully the rain held off. We had 14 volunteers and 2 DMBC Rangers attending, all eager to tackle our tasks. After our briefing we split into pairs and set off around the park. Our litter picking teams collected four big bags of rubbish while the rest of us set about cutting back overgrown brambles and shrubs, trimming the grass from around the ‘Q P’ beds, bins, benches and orienteering posts. We were also able to reunite a lady with her car keys that she had dropped whilst walking and had asked the group for help. Thank you to the ladies who found them and passed them to one of our volunteers. We assembled back at the Green Flag for refreshments with delicious cakes supplied by Debra, Katrina and Julie. Thank you to everyone involved for another great morning’s work.

The Friends will be holding another Coffee Morning this year to raise funds for the group. It will take place on Saturday 28th October at Hatfield Community Library, 10am – 12noon. There will be a raffle and refreshments with lots of cake on sale! Please pop in and support us.

Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, from litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear.
