Hatfield Community Library The end of Summer can be a sad time as the winter months are on the way. If you need to get out and do something come to the library. We have books of course but there are other things you can do from our selection of classes. If you are not computer literate, then come and learn how to use one. If I can anyone can. I must admit I am struggling with the new version of Skype so I have booked a session with David Prakel to learn how to use it. (I hope) or I might have to give in and get an Iphone so I can Facetime. The summer activities ended on a high with 40 to 50 people enjoying the animals from Sam’s Safaris. The armadillo was a favourite as he wandered round visiting the enthralled children who were able to scratch his back. Apparently the harder they scratch the better he likes it. All our free events were well attended. However, the Reading Challenge has not been as successful as previous years as only about half the children have completed the task. Maybe the hot weather meant more people were out and about. The Reading Challenge is a good way to encourage children to keep reading during the long summer holidays. Those children who did complete it will have more chance to win the prize draw. We will be letting it run a bit longer to let those children who would still like to complete it have a chance to do so. Half Term The next activity will be at half term when we are holding a science event Lab Rascals on Wednesday October 31st. The places will be limited to 20, so booking is essential. The Kitchen has a new look. Thanks to HTC who gave us a grant. We just need to get the rest of the office decorated to match. Then it should be a nicer place to make refreshments and have councillors’ surgeries or meeting if a private space is needed. Tuesday afternoon was lively in the library as the new Games Café got underway. A variety of games were taking place. If anyone else would like to come along you would be most welcome to join the group. Refreshments are provided. COMPUTER CLASSES Free Help A reminder that we have at last organised some help for those people who, like me, are not very knowledgeable or confident about their devices ie laptops, I-phones, tablets, I-pads etc. David Prakel has volunteered to run some informal one to one sessions of 45mins. He can help with any digital problems with computers, laptops, tablets or phones; imaging or documents, searching or organising online (or off) Library members can use our computers for two hours free of charge. We do allow people to print from their phones, memory sticks etc. Charges for A4 black and white 20p. A4 Colour 50p. Photocopying is the same except on the old machine we charge 10p for A4 black and white and 20p for A3 black and white. A reminder that we have an offer on Spoken Words CDs. There will be no charge for borrowing them. Children’s DVDs are also free to borrow. Provisional time for the Christmas Fayre is Friday Nov.30th. (I know it is too early to mention Christmas but the next publications may not be out in time) We are co-ordinating with the church carol service and the switching on of the lights so we can have a village event, WEEKLY EVENTS AT THE LIBRARY Monday, Rhyme Time 10:30am Children’s stories and songs. This is a fun session for pre-school children and parents/carers. Very young children are welcome. Parents can stay and have a chat and coffee or read to their children. Refreshments are included. Yoga 6:30- 8:00 Tuesday, Art Class 10:00-12:30. Tuition is available to help beginners and experienced artists. New members are welcome. You do not have be good at art to enjoy this class. Yoga 6:30-8:00pm. Readers’ group on the last Tuesday of the month 3:00-4:00pm. We would like new members to join this small and friendly group. We read

a variety of books and most of us have read and enjoyed books which we might otherwise have passed over on the shelf. Wednesday, Supported Yoga 3:00-4:00pm. Gentle Yoga 4:30-6:00pm. Stronger Yoga 6:30-8:00pm.
Yoga is an excellent way to keep your body supple. The classes are suitable for a range of abilities as Judy who runs the classes makes sure everyone can do the exercises within their capabilities. Friday, Readers’ Group on the last Friday of the month 10:30-12:30 Needles and Pins twice a month. 10:30-12:30. This is a friendly craft group which would welcome new members New members are always welcome to these groups. Please ring the library for more information about any courses. It is important to check particularly in the summer months that these courses are on. The Yoga and art classes do have a charge for tutoring. Community News HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR GARDENING SOCIETY The Autumn session commenced on Tuesday 5 September with a visit from our old friend Stephen Gay. On this occasion he was telling us about “Discovering the Huddersfield to Penistone Line”. But the title did not do justice to the presentation. The rail journey went from Sheffield to Huddersfield via Barnsley, Denby Dale, Penistone and other Pennine locations. As ever there were plenty of stories about the people and places along the line and a host of magnificent photographs to illustrate it. There was and excellent attendance to enjoy the evening. The Annual Autumn Show was held the following Saturday on 8th September. The Hall at the Working Men’s Club looked a picture when all the entrants had set up their entries. Judging took place from 11am, and this being the Autumn Show with more classes than in Spring, was not completed till turned 12-30pm. The Show was opened to the general public at about 2pm. Later on the Cups and Shields were presented by our President and Chairman, Mr John Brown. After this, there was an auction of the entries which competitors did not want to keep, the proceeds going to the Society’s funds. As usual, our President took the Auctioneer’s gavel, and entertained us all with his patter, at the same time selling off all the uncollected show entries and some other donated items as well. The winners of the trophies were: Lewis Trophy Terry Head George Roberts Trophy Roy Green Darley Cup Brenda White Flower Cup Mel Reed Harry Smith Trophy Sharon Green Mary Hepworth Cup Marion Head Silver Jubilee Cup Marion Head Vegetable Shield Terry Head Fruit Shield Lesley Colwill Floral Art Shield Pam Banks Handicrafts Shield Jean Singleton Produce Shield Lesley Colwill The Society’s next Show will be in Spring on Saturday 16 March 2019, when all classes will be open. The next Tuesday evening meeting will be on October 2nd at Hatfield Woodhouse Club starting at 7-30pm. Our Speaker will be Tina Greene who is a glass artist.

Caroline takes to the water with Thorne Sea Cadets Caroline Flint put her safety in the capable hands of Sea Cadet cox Katie Rae Duffield this week, as she cast off with the Thorne Sea Cadets to experience their training and rescue manoeuvres on Thorne canal. The MP attended one of the twice weekly meetings of the 47strong cadet group, led by Petty Officer Dave Redmile, and heard about their plans for a new building.
range of outward bound skills.
Said Caroline: “I was really pleased to meet the cadets and get out on the water with the cadets. Katie Rae Duffield is one of the most experienced cadets, and competes in national competitions, so I knew I was in good hands.” From Spring to Autumn the Sea Cadets do a variety of activity twice weekly on the water learning seamanship, kayaking, and a
The MP also met the Chair of Trustees and discussed the problems and costs of running their current building, the last part of a 200 year old work house. Said Caroline: “The Cadets’ centre, part of a former workhouse, is in a brilliant waterfront location near to their boathouse on Thorne canal, but this old building has very high running costs. “I was interested to hear their plans to develop the waterfront area to ensure the Cadets have a strong future.” PHOTO SHOWS Caroline on board, leading the boat, nearest camera, is coxswain Katie Rae Duffield. Moving Forward at Thorne Camera Club As Summer comes to a close, Autumn follows on, and the Camera Club transition from outdoor to indoor meetings goes smoothly. New members are encouraged to join the club activities, to gain confidence, experience and ability in their Photography, in a friendly atmosphere. Some members, having progressed over the past five years, are now looking towards outside exhibitions, salons, and distinctions. One member gained an LRPS last year. The final outing of the Summer Programme took a dark turn, as members went into Doncaster one night to try some low light photography. Meeting by St George’s Church ( the minster ), illuminated at night, some good shots were recorded, then came the tricky bit. Traffic trails are not so easy to capture, but near the Hub is a good spot to try. The backdrop of the college, with street lighting, plus red and white vehicle lights, makes a great combination, the occasional blue light being an added bonus. With tripods on the substantial grass verge, members found a safe place, with a good view, to try their hand, with help from other members, or just by trial and error. A lot of excitement was created by the novelty of the situation and interesting, sometimes surprising, shots taken. A social gathering in the Punch Bowl Library found members and guests getting together for a chat about the summer, holidays and family news. Family and visitors were welcomed equally to this informal start to the Autumn Programme. From now on, meetings will be in the Methodist Church Hall on Mondays at 7.15pm, from September 17th, except October 1st. Certificates will be awarded for those who studied during the summer on the Photographic Improvement Course. The Autumn Programme is packed with ways to improve your photography. Members share pictures - holidays, wildlife, family or other interests. Friendly competitions are held occasionally, often with a visiting judge commenting with a view to helping to improve the standard. Practical activities using cameras, tutorials to help with software, demonstrations and discussions, as well as visiting speakers, are all in the programme, plus some social events near Christmas. All levels of photographic expertise is represented and newcomers are encouraged, as well as more able photographers wishing to gain distinctions, such RPS or PAGB. Help and advice is given where possible. If you think the Camera Club would be of interest to you, you can come along to a meeting, or contact David on 07463821182, or email thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk.

Community News Hatfield Town Cricket Club After a tough season the Hatfield Town CC senior sides found some late season form and produced some exciting performances that bode well for the future. After a spirited performance in defeat away at Old Sharlston, where Alec Elliot took 5-38 there were wins at home to West Bretton and away at Hooton Pagnell. Connah Pattison 4-26 and James Winstanley 3-30 reduced West Bretton to 160 all out before an excellent 70 from Andy Cutts and 20 from Shehzad Hussain saw Hatfield home to victory, finishing 162-8 to earn their first victory of the season. They followed this up with a spectacular run chase at Hooton. After making a blistering start Hooton were pegged back to 219-9, by Shehzad Hussain 4-54, with Winstanley and Elliot picking up two wickets apiece. At 43-4 in reply Town looked set for defeat but Sharafat Hussain produced a remarkable display of clean hitting in an innings of 115no backed up by 43 from brother Talib and 24no from Shezad to see Town secure victory in the final over at 222-5. The 2nd XI have matched this show of spirit, first by giving Garforth 1st XI a close game when Talib Hussain hit 69, supported well by 13 year old Johnson Hynes in a defiant last wicket partnership that proved just short of setting a challenging target. They then travelled to Ferrybridge 1st XI where 32 from skipper Craig Pattison and 27 from Sharafat Hussain saw them reach 116 all out on a challenging wicket. John Severn rolled back the years to take 5-14 supported well by James Stafford to bowl the hosts out for 92 for victory. This was then followed by a home victory over Bullcroft Main when Severn turned batsmen to hit a brilliant 109 no in a total of 261. All the bowlers chipped in to bowl out the visitors for 126 with another youngster Josh Platt starring with 3-25. Away from the senior sides, the summer camp proved a big success with over 20 children attending each of the three days with the professional and enjoyed a fun packed time. The Friday night training sessions have now come to an end, with over 60 children on the register this bodes well for the future of the club and the local community. Another exciting addition for next season will be ladies softball cricket for age 11 upwards. Our initial taster session provided by the Yorkshire Cricket Board was well attended and we will be looking to expand this next season. As the season ends this is a good time to say a BIG thank you to everyone for their support throughout the season, We are fortunate to have the backing of volunteers, sponsors, parents and players from within the local community and without everyone of you the great work we do with the local children would not be possible. We are holding an end of season celebration evening at Hatfields on Saturday 13th October with a disco and live music it should be a great end to the season. Everyone is welcome to come along, for further details checkout out our Facebook page and website or contact Chris on 07709805416.
