Doncaster U3A is an organisation for retired and semi-retired people and enables them to have an active social life, with over thirty groups meeting in the Doncaster area and being run by group leaders who are DU3A members.

THORNE CAMERA CLUB It has been an excellent summer for the club's photo-shoots and it continued with our final scheduled outing to the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington near York. The museum is situated on a former World War II RAF bomber base and contains many aircraft throughout the history of aviation. The museum's presentation of the aircraft and the associated artefacts together with the flavour of life on the base during the war period was excellent. The day was completed with a visit to the 'NAAFI' for a well deserved coffee before heading back to Thorne.

We had a further early evening photo-shoot at West Stockwith Basin with the attractions of the marina and the Sea Lock into the River Trent. The Waterfront Inn provided an additional interest for the evening with a 'Bike Night' where dozens of bikers congregated with their machines. Members had the opportunity to make the best use of the available evening light and to capture the vistas around the boats in the marina and the architecture surrounding the area during the 'Evening Blue Hour'. A good night was had by all.

Our annual Autumn Social Evening on the 5th September at the Punch Bowl was well attended with members looking forward with enthusiasm for the new and exciting Autumn programme.

The club's Autumn Programme starts with a 'Members Night' on the 12th September with members presenting their printed images to share with other members and will be followed on the 19th September with a Digital projected Image presentation 'The Summer Picture Show' with images taken by members throughout the summer from the club's outings, holidays or any other activity.

The first speaker for the new programme will be Wild Life Photographer Tracy Lund from Hull on the 26th September. Tracy, a telecommunications engineer has always enjoyed photography together with wildlife and whilst on a trip to Africa began to take both interest seriously and has been presented with many awards for her excellent work on wildlife. Every one is welcome to the club to attend her talk on wildlife complimented with images and listen to the stories of her travels. The meeting starts at 7.30pm at the Methodist Church Hall, King Street, Thorne DN8 5BA. Visitors fee at the door £3.00.

Monty's Monthly Tip For 'Light Trails' it is advised to go in a small group and wear clothing that is easily seen by passing motorists.

Select a busy road and find a safe location for your tripod. Set your camera with a slow Shutter speed for a long exposure, a small aperture (f18) and a low ISO (100). Take a few test shots and adjust Shutter Speed and/or the Aperture to suit your requirements and enjoy the results.

Hatfield Community Library The library had its last children's event on Tuesday 30th when the library was steeped in the smell of strawberry and bubblegum as children made bath bombs for friends and family. (or themselves). The children really enjoyed the activity. The children were decked in aprons, gloves, and safety goggles and the simple ingredients which were safe to use amazingly made bath bombs.

The previous Lab Rascal events were the Volcano and Planetarium. The planetarium took place in the church as the library ceiling was not high enough to accommodate the dome. According to the reports which I have received, it was a huge success. Younger children learned about the stars and planets which were projected onto the dome. Then the Apollo story was narrated for older children.

The Volcano activity also went down very well as dry ice was involved and this always creates great excitement amongst the children when it shoots in to the air. When washing up liquid is added, the effect is even better. All children wore protective gear and used tweezers to hold the dry ice. In the grand finale, all the remaining dry ice was added to very hot water and the library was covered in the resulting gas.

The Lego Robotics was a favourite as usual and both sessions were well attended. The children made and programmed various models including cars and fairground rides.

Sam's Safaris was another favourite. There was a selection of wild animals which the children were able to handle or touch. The armadillo was a star.

Mr Dan treated children to circus skills and balloon modelling. So the library was alive with future performers and escaping balloons.

I would like to thank Thorne Rural Lions for their donation to the library after the coffee morning. The cakes were delicious and irresistible.

Events in the Library New Activities A new activity is a Beginner's Family History group on Tuesdays 1:30-3:30. It will be run by Sherelle Hawes, who runs our other Family History groups. Sherelle is a fountain of information for those who are trying to find their relations. The first week will be a taster session. If you ring or come into the library to join this group, please leave your details as we need to know how many people are interested. You will be able to use the library computers to access Ancestry and Find my Past which has the 1921 census on it. Once you have started you can come into the library as a member to research.

Doncaster Council members will be holding a drop in surgery on the first Friday of the month in the library at 2pm. If you have anything that you would like to discuss with your representatives, come along to the library to meet them.

Weekly Classes. If you are looking for some activities for leisure or learning and would like to meet new people, come to the library and join some of our groups Or just borrow a book and have a coffee and a chat.

MONDAY. Needles and Pins 10am. Bring your own work and chat with like-minded people or ask for advice about a project you might want to start. Bridge 1pm for beginners and improvers. (free activity) TUESDAY. Games café 10:00-12:30 Join us in the library to play a variety of games including Mahjong.

Refreshments are provided for the small charge of £1 (Free activity). Readers’ group on the last Tuesday of the month 2-3:30 or the last Friday of the month at 10:30. We read a variety of books and most of us have read and enjoyed books which we might otherwise have passed over on the shelf. Books are provided by the library service. (Free activity ). Yoga 6:00-7:30pm. Gentle Hatha Yoga £6. This is also available on Zoom if you would like to take part at home You will need to download Zoom then receive a link from the library to join the session. joining in a class at the library can still do yoga in their own home. The cost is £6 WEDNESDAY. Art Class 10:00-12:30 Tuition from an artist is available to help beginners and experienced artists. New members are welcome. You do not have be good at art to enjoy this class. A recent member had no art experience but is turning out some great pictures. If you don’t have any equipment, there is some which you can use to have a go. (£7.50a session). Yoga (gentle/chair yoga) 3:30-5pm £6.

This is a lovely session for people who have trouble getting up and down off the floor or have some health problems. A few new members have joined recently and are really enjoying it.

SCOUTS DN7 FOODBANK COFFEE MORNING Help the 68th Hatfield Scouts raise money for the DN7 Foodbankor just pop in for a coffee and cake at our Foodbank coffee morning on Saturday 15th of October. Why not try a bacon sandwich or have a go at our activities that will be running from 10-12 am So stop by the Hatfield Scout Hut (on Westfield Road, Hatfield DN7 6PY) from 10-12 for the 68th coffee morning on 15th October and help us raise money for the DN7 Foodbank (all profits go towards the DN7 Foodbank) Jack Williams (patrol leader) As part of their World challenge badge work our scouts at 68th have been volunteering at our local foodbank. Part of the challenge was to find out how the foodbank operates, how and who it helps, and then to come away with a way forward for the scouts to assist. Each group of scouts that have volunteered so far have thought of different ways to help, and we will be taking up all their ideas over the coming months. The coffee morning will go towards World challenge badge and Fundraiser badge and will also be good experience for them in teamwork, planning and execution. thank you in anticipation. Hatfield Woodhouse Amateur Gardening Society At the Society’s September meeting our guest speaker was Stephen Gay, the well known rILWt enthusiast, whose subject was based on part of the railway system of Cornwall.

At the beginning of his presentation, Stephen reminded us that it was almost four years since he last visited us, a long gap due to we-know-what. Stephen took us along a stretch of mainline and branch lines, featuring many of the stations and their buildings, viaducts and other bridges, and especially tales of people he had met. As usual, this was an extremely well researched talk with high class photographs in support. The very large audience thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

At our next Spring Show in March 2023, we will have an extra bulb class, sponsored by Duncan Hedley Carpets of Thorne. A batch of special daffodil bulbs being purchased and each Society member will be entitled to three of these bulbs.. At the October meeting these will be distributed along with cultural notes. The use of these is a personal choice for the grower, except that the pot size in the notes is mandatory.

The 2023 Autumn Show was held on Saturday 12 September at Hatfield Woodhouse Club. Overall there was an excellent entry even though the vegetable classes were on the thin side, potential exhibits maturing earlier the usual because the vey hot weather. Even so, the show tables were a picture when all the exhibits were in place.

Once again our President, John Brown, was the auctioneer which he undertook in his inimitable amusing style.

Our next evening meeting will be on Tuesday 4 October at Hatfield Woodhouse Club commencing at 7-30pm. Our guest speaker will be Lee Plevey. Lee is one of our judges at both Spring and Autumn Shows, and he will be speaking about judging at the recent Autumn Show. He will be pleased to answer questions in his presentation. As usual, we welcome members and non members alike to this meeting. We look forward to seeing you there.

Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust

Hello again. We hope you have enjoyed the summer months despite the high temperatures at times, although some people we have spoken to definitely liked it hot!

We would like to say a big thank you to Hickleton Golf Club, Ladies Section.

They raised a wonderful £666.05p for our charity. Well done ladies!

We had a stall at Auckley Show in August which made £325 and a stall at St John’s Hospice open day early September which raised £185. Thank you so much to everyone who bought items and gave donations. The weather was fine on both days which really helped.

We would also like to thank people who donate money in lieu of flowers at funerals. Those are very difficult times and we are grateful to everyone who thinks of us.

Just a reminder that Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers are holding their very popular Annual Charity Christmas Concert on Saturday, 17th December at Doncaster Minster. Once again they will be supporting Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust, for which we are extremely grateful.

Also, we will be holding our Memory Tree in Frenchgate Centre on the lead up to Christmas. This will be for two weeks only from Monday, 28th November to Saturday, 10th December (excluding Sunday, 4th December). Times are 10am to 3pm. We have all new items, so please do come along to see us.

We have now moved down a floor in our office block. Friends of Quarry Park We reported last month that Quarry Park had once again retained the prestigious Green Flag award for the sixth consecutive year.

The raising of the new flag took place at Quarry Park on the very hot and sunny afternoon of Friday 12th August. This was attended by representatives of DMBC and the Friends of Quarry Park. We are immensely proud of this award which is testament to the hard work by everyone involved.

There was a good turnout for the Orienteering event on Monday 8th August. Nine adults and 11 children attended the event which was organised by the DMBC Rangers who instructed the participants on how to use a map and compass. The 7 groups then headed off to navigate their way around the park to locate the 24 Orienteering posts. There are three courses to follow, some groups chose to do one course but some did all three! The children then made their own medals from wooden discs, marker pens and twine. The Friends were on hand to provide refreshments during the event. A great time was had by all!

On Sunday 28th August the Friends were invited to visit Thorne Community Wood. Karl from the Friends of Thorne Community Wood gave a guided tour and explained about the work that goes on there.

The wood is home to a variety of wildlife, native trees and several large ponds. It is a wonderful and naturally diverse area to explore and well worth a visit and right on the doorstep for those living in Thorne.

We had another successful Volunteer Work Party on Friday 2nd September with 7 volunteers, 2 junior helpers, and 2 DMBC Rangers. Gareth from Doncaster Green Spaces Network joined us to see what we were doing and to lend a hand.

Tasks included tidying up around the zip wire where the brambles had got out of hand as well as cutting back some overhanging tree branches.

There was a mass litter pick around the park, collecting six bags of rubbish, as well as trimming the shrubbery around the car park. We had a break for refreshments before finishing off the cutting back and then we scattered wildflower seeds in a couple of areas. Hopefully they will germinate and give a colourful display next year. A huge thank you to all our volunteers for a great morning’s work.

A date for the diary – the Friends of Quarry Park are holding a Coffee Morning at Hatfield Community Library on Saturday 29th October from 10am – 12 noon. More details will be published on our Facebook page nearer the time.

Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, from litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next events are scheduled for Friday 7th October and Friday 4th November at 10am – 12 noon, meet at the Green Flag.
