Welcome to the March 2024 issue of the Hatfield Arrow. Please remember to mention the Hatfield Arrow wherever you use the local businesses that advertise. The Hatfield Arrow relies heavily on the support of the local businesses advertising their goods or services. Without them it would not be possible every month. Also, remember that we have a business directory listing at the back of the magazine. If you are a local tradesman, electrician, plumber, tiler etc, and would like your details including please contact me. The deadline for the April issue is Friday 15th March.

Hatfield Community Library This strange weather has generated some beautiful sunrises and sunsets. I persuaded my grandson to use his phone creatively as we were on the way to Thorne and he took some lovely photos. He even took one when watching Donny Rovers. (sadly they lost) Now at least I am not leaving home in the dark for the school run and coming back in the dark after locking up in the library as the hours of daylight increase. First of all I would like to apologise to a few people who rang up about the Digital Camera course. It was cancelled due to low numbers but after I had submitted the article for the paper so it was too late to retract the item. MIND drop in sessions The next sessions will be in March on Thursday the 14th and 28th. The group can offer help with many of today's problems. eg Fuel poverty and staying warm, financial hardship support, support accessing food banks as well as emotional and wellbeing support. If you feel that you need help with any these or just need to talk, please come to chat to the friendly helpful staff. Future events Saturday March 23rd COFFEE MORNING Friends of Church Building Trust th Saturday April 6 D.R Bike session 10-2. Bike Workshop Warm a Place. The library will again be a warm place where people can come to save on heating at home. You do not have to be a member to come. You can read, chat, work on your devices (wifi is available) or have a warm drink. We usually have a jigsaw on the go so if you enjoy doing a jigsaw but have no room at home you know where to come. We also have a selection of jigsaws to borrow for free. All we ask is to bring it back when you have finished and take another one to do. If you have any jigsaws in good condition you can donate them to the library. We also have some games/cards which can be used. Tea and coffee will be available. Parents and carers are welcome to bring children in to read to them or play with the toys in the library. Again if you have any toys in good condition which are safe for younger children we would be happy to accept them. We have received some more new to us children’s books this week so the shelves in the children’s library area are getting full. We have also received some brand new board books for the very young children. Weekly groups. We have a variety of activities in the library which encourage people to be creative, competitive (in a friendly way), have fun, make friends and keep fit in mind and body. If you are interested in any of activities, come along to see what the groups are doing to find out if you would like to join in. MONDAY - Wriggle, Rhyme and Storytime 10-11am (free) This session has been an enjoyable one for lots of young children. There is a range of activies for the children. Apparently anybody who tries this game soon becomes a fan.I asked if Mahjong was a difficult game to play and was told it can be easy or difficult. The easy game is a bit like gin rummy then it can be played at a higher level if you want. The other players are always willing to help beginners. Yoga is a really good way to help you to keep supple, strengthen muscles and improve your mobility. Friday sing- a- long As I mentioned in the last news item, we are losing Becky our singing leader due to family commitments. Singing will not restart immediately after Christmas as we need to buy and learn how to use the equipment, as well as find a singing leader. We hope to begin it again by February at the latest. Other services Computers. Library members can use the computers with no charge for two hours. It is worth joining the library to be able to do this. If you are interested in your family history, you can use Ancestory or Find my Past to research your family. It is quite an addictive pastime once you get started. Printing/photocopying/faxing. Lots of people are coming to the library to use our printing and photocopying services from their devices for a reasonable charge. I'm getting quite good at printing out parcel labels and sizing them. If you are a library member, you can use our computers to print items. Friends of Quarry Park

Our February work party was a very busy session. 18 eager volunteers, including a new recruit, and our Ranger Louise gathered in the sunshine and tasks were allocated by our Coordinator Pete. These included cutting back the gorse and brambles encroaching onto the entrance from the Post Office path. Wild garlic plants were planted in the woods and six bags of litter were collected by our super-efficient army of litter pickers. Some unusual objects were found including a fire extinguisher, gas canisters, tennis balls and a pile of leaflets that obviously had not been delivered! There are a variety of ageing benches around the park that have rotting posts so some of these were repaired or replaced. A new bench was installed near the wildflower meadows from timber that has been supplied by the Council, cut from a fallen tree. There will be four more benches installed over the coming months. During the morning, we had two visitors, Anushka from Well Doncaster, who came along to see what we get up to; and Dave from Friends of Jubilee Park dropped by for a chat and assisted with the bench installation compacting the soil with his stylish walking stick. The session ended with refreshments and delicious salted caramel brownies baked by Julie. A successful morning’s work by all involved. Well done! Another task was completed recently in the car park. The Council arranged the delivery of four tons of road planings and 4 of our volunteers Pete, Steve, Richard & Paul spent a couple of hours one sunny morning filling in the many potholes. They did a great job. Still a few holes left but more material will be on the way soon. The group has been successful in applying for free trees through the South Yorkshire Mayor’s Free Trees for Communities Scheme, so we will be busy planting again around the park next month! Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, from litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next events are scheduled for Friday 1st March and Friday 5th April 10am – 12 noon, meet at the Green Flag. Full details will be published on our Facebook page ‘Friends of Quarry Park’ or you can email us at thequarrypark@gmail.com or call us on 07546 595144.

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST Here we are, into Spring…hurrah! While waiting for the better weather, we had an exciting day out last month when we were invited, along with other organisations, to see the Intuitive Da Vinci Xi robot at Doncaster Royal Infirmary. We were all encouraged to have ‘hands on’ experience with the robot which was fascinating. Chief Executive Richard Parker OBE said: “Robotic surgery will soon become part of the core curriculum for surgeons and, without the robot, we could lose the ability to train some specialist surgical trainees.” Consultant surgeon Antonia Durham-Hall said: “As improvements are made in the early diagnosis of cancers it is extremely important that advancements are also made in how we treat them, so patients can go on to have a good quality of life post cancer surgery.” DRI are also writing a piece about us in their in-house magazine “Foundations for Health” so watch out for this if you are visiting the hospital. It will also mention our latest acquisition the Fibroscanner which we donated recently to help in the diagnosis of liver disease. On Saturday, 23rd March Sprotbrough Library are having a craft fair from 10am to 12 noon. We will have a stall selling good quality donated jewellery including rings, necklaces, bracelets, etc. There will be a variety of stalls so come along and grab a bargain! If you have any fundraising ideas we would be very pleased to hear from you. Our details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), first floor (lift available), Room 104. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. As the office is not fully manned it is best to Email or telephone in advance if you are thinking of coming to see us. As we often mention, it is only through the generosity of local residents and organisations that enable us to donate cancer-related equipment to our local hospitals. In turn, this benefits local people. We cannot thank you all enough.

‘Travis roaming as Romans!’

Just after New Year, on a cold snowy day, our year 4 children embarked on an adventure to become Romans for the day when they visited Murton Park. Some of our year 4 children wrote about the day: At Murton Park, we were met by a Roman soldier (whose name was Marcus) who taught us how to march like Romans. We learnt that in Latin right is ‘dex’ and left is ‘sin’. Then we marched down to our fort and four donkeys (children) tugged a blue wagon. The password was ‘Hail Caesar’ to get on the wagon. There were 4 groups

and 4 huts where we changed into a tunic with a rope belt. Two groups completed their contracts first and then the other groups made oil lamps. We had to write in Latin for our contracts and write a letter on the back. The contract said that we had to be in the Roman Army for 25 years. I enjoyed the contract writing as I got to sit outside in the snow. After that, we went to a different hut and made an oil lamp out of clay. It was my favourite thing to do because I love arts and crafts. Next, we went to another field for training in the fort. My group did the throwing first. We had a long, sharp spear and we stood behind a wooden bannister. We used the spear to throw at dummies. We learnt different positions like safety, fighting, guarding and throwing positions. Some children got to be the manager. Finally, we learnt how to use a sword. We used the sword to hit the dummy made out of a bag. When we completed all of our jobs we got Roman medallions for our payment. We had a wonderful time. Freya, Isaac, Zachary, Sophia We are so proud of the children and the way that they were ambassadors for our school. We look forward to sharing our next adventures with you.
