Welcome to the March 2021 issue of the Hatfield Arrow.

It has been 15 years since I started the Hatfield Arrow (formally known as The Hatfield Flyer). Every month of every year for the last 15 years I have published a Hatfield Arrow magazine with the exception of 2 months last year due to the Coronavirus lockdown. I would like to say a massive thank you to the local businesses that have supported the Arrow at any time and to those local businesses that are still a huge support each month. Shopping local and using local businesses has never been more important than it is now. I would also like to thank all the delivery staff, you the readers and everyone who has contributed to the content of the Hatfield Arrow over the years.

The deadline for the April issue is Wednesday 17th March. Julie Morrell Tel: 07854 880882 Julie@arrowpublications.co.uk www.arrowpublications.co.uk Find us on facebook

Community News Friends of Quarry Park Our last volunteer work party was held in December 2020 when the Car Park on St Mary’s Road was cleared and tidied. DMBC have let us know that they are waiting for planning approval for the CCTV tower which is to be installed before it can be reopened. Like many things at present it is taking longer due to the Covid pandemic. We may be still in lockdown but some of our volunteers have still been going out individually or in socially distanced pairs to keep on top of litter picking. Their latest efforts started on the path from the Broadway entrance when 4 bags of litter were collected. They are keeping in practice for the 6th Annual Keep Britain Tidy Great British Spring Clean which is to be held a little later than usual from 28 May to 13 June 2021. We will confirm our date(s) nearer the time. We have had to appeal to walkers again to keep in single file on the narrow path to the west of the woodland and not encroach on the farmer’s field as he is concerned about damage to his crops. This path was left as a concession and is not a bridleway or one of the recommended walking routes. Maps of the walking routes are on the boards at the Park’s entrances and can be downloaded from the DMBC website for Quarry Park. We hope you enjoy your walks and a chance to see the seasons unfold throughout the year on our Local Nature Reserve. As I write this the snow is steadily falling but nature is still at work on the Park. We are seeing the first signs of spring with snowdrops making an appearance in the woodland. We look forward to better weather and the fantastic spring displays of colourful bulbs which should cheer everyone up. Janice Bewley

Hatfield Community Library

The library continues to carry on despite everything making life difficult and that includes the weather. The first day of February was a glorious sunny, if cold, day. I enjoyed a lovely walk through Quarry Park. Then the second day, snow! So the walk on Hatfield Moors was postponed. (I did the 3mile walk at home on YouTube instead. Not nearly as picturesque but it made me feel better). Our valiant volunteers are still manning the desk and helping people to find books. As I have said, we are limited to the books in our library but we can tell you if a nearby library has the book you want so you can order and collect from there. Some borrowers have been using the library regularly but we would like more people to borrow books to show we are still needed in the community. Some of our activity leaders have been doing their best to come to grips with Zoom technology to try to continue their activity even though we cannot have classes in the library at the moment. The library has obtained a grant to pay for the Zoom use as it is only free for 45minutes. In the last article, I mentioned that we were hoping to start the Yoga and Tai Chi on Zoom. Yoga has been running successfully for three weeks now. If you would like to do Yoga at home, it is on Tuesday afternoons at 2:15 and in the evening at 6pm. To take part, you will need to download the Zoom app which is fairly easy. I even managed to do it so it can’t be that hard. I found it by a search in the apps store on my Samsung tablet. You will be given a link to the Zoom meeting. Click on the link and you should be able to join the group. There is something cosy about doing the Yoga in the comfort of your own home especially in this weather. There will be a cost as it is Jayne’s business. Each session will be £4 to be paid in advance. If you want more information you can contact Jayne Pennock by emailinfo@penbar.co.uk or by phone -07787837460 Unfortunately we were unable to organise the Tai Chi sessions on-line. The Readers’ groups will be pleased to know that our co-ordinator, Sharon, is trying to master the Zoom meeting so we can restart our discussions. I am going to have to read our last book again as we were unable to

meet to discuss it. I enjoyed the book “Different Class” by Joanne Harris. I have read two of her books ‘Chocolat’ and ‘Blackberry Wine,’ both of which I enjoyed. I did not expect to like “Different Class” from the blurb but to my surprise I did and read it non- stop to the end. If you want to try something a bit different, you might like her books. Joanne Harris is also one of our Yorkshire authors. I did mention in the last article we would like to have our local authors in to talk about their books. Hopefully we might be able to do this on Zoom. If you would like to listen in on Zoom, watch out for further information. I know some people are not totally confident with computer technology, however this pandemic has made more people rely on social media to keep in contact with our family and friends. I have never been a fan of social media mainly because of the horrible things some people have said on it, but I must confess that it has been a great comfort to me to see friends and family on WhatsApp or Zoom and play games with the grandchildren. I have also been able to do on-line shopping for food and presents but I can’t wait to do real shopping before all our stores go bust. If you are looking for something to do at home in the awful weather, why not do some research into your family tree? If you are a library member you can use ‘Ancestry’ and ‘Find my Past’ free on the DMBC library website. You will need your library card number and PIN number to access the site. If You are not a library member, then you can join on-line or ring the library for help. I did a bit of name dropping last time when I said that Neil Dudgeon (Inspector Barnaby) went to a school where I used to teach. Since then people have been telling me about other famous Doncastrians. Two famous opera singers Janet Baker who was born in Hatfield and Lesley Garret who was born in Thorne. Tony Christie born in Conisbrough, Actors Brian Blessed who was born in Mexborough, Diana Rigg and Neil Dudgeon. Although Billy Bremner the footballer was not born here, he died in Doncaster. I used to live in Leeds when they had a brilliant football team lead by Bremner. His funeral took place in Edlington in the church next to the school where I was teaching at that time. It was good to see some of the footballing legends from that team who attended his funeral. We watched from the school yard to pay our respects. Then I googled the names of famous people from Doncaster. The list was long. I seem to be almost back at the time of year when started my walks round Jubilee a year ago. Difficult to believe but true. I was going out at 5:30am to avoid meeting people because I was so worried about the Corona virus. Friends did not believe I was so daft, but I have photos of sunrise on Jubilee to prove it! However, it was surprising how many people were dog walking around that time. I would like to say that I became braver during the year and started going out at different times, but the truth was that I was tired of getting up so early and falling asleep by lunchtime. I go out at all different times now and have met lots of people who smile and say hello (and of course dogs who like to do the same). I still distance but am not as jumpy as I was. I still smile remembering the expression on the face of a passing dog walker when I all but jumped into a Hawthorn hedge, at the bottom of the motorway footbridge, to avoid him. I have, at last, had the call for my first ‘jab’ as the PM likes to call it. The NHS letter arrived first. It is very easy to book with them if you are prepared to travel. Also remember that you must book both vaccinations at the same time and get a reference number for both. Stay safe and keep well. If you have any queries about the library or using our services, please contact us. Tel. 842064 email: hatfieldcommunitylibrary@gmail.com

COUNTRY MUSIC ARTIST EMMA JADE CROWNED MISS DONCASTER GB A singer from Doncaster has expanded her repertoire to gain the title Miss Doncaster GB ahead of Miss Great Britain 2021. Emma Jade is a country music artist from here in Doncaster, at the age of 16 she was flown to Nashville to perform as the first international artist at a show called the Teen Hoot. At 18 she auditioned for The Voice UK and became a member of Team Tom, an experience she describes as an incredible learning opportunity. In the 8 years since The Voice she has been touring all over, playing shows to amazing crowds, recording a number one record on the UK country music charts and being nominated for female vocalist of the year at the British Country music awards. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic Emma hasn’t been able to play a show since March 2020. With the loss of her touring schedule Emma Jade decided to turn her hand to something new, she applied to compete in Miss Great Britain. After an intense application process and a long wait whilst the organisers figured out how to proceed with the competition during the pandemic she was named as the winner of the regional Miss Doncaster GB title, which takes her straight to the Miss Great Britain 2021 final. Miss Great Britain did manage to go ahead in February 2020 before the first lockdown to celebrate it’s 75th anniversary with fellow country music artist Jen Atkin being crowned the winner. The Miss Great Britain 2021 final is planned to take place in September 2021. Miss Great Britain has helped launch the career of many well-known names including Miss GB 1957 Leila Williams (Blue Peter presenter), Miss GB 1976 Dinah May (actress), Miss GB 1984 Debbie Greenwood (TV presenter), Miss GB 2006 Danielle Lloyd (Model, TV personality) and Miss GB 2007 Preeti Desai (Model, film actress). ‘I think there’s a big stereotype when it comes to pageants, people seem to think it’s all about how we look and the most beautiful girl always wins. This really isn’t the case anymore, being a pageant queen is all about being a great role model and having the confidence to speak your mind. We have affiliated charities that we all raise money for but we’re all completely different. I personally campaign for the end to period and hygiene poverty, as well as raising money for the Teenage cancer trust alongside raising money for the two Miss Great Britain 2021 charities; Cancer Research UK and Alex’s Wish. Of course, we get to dress up and feel glamorous but we also form amazing friendships with the other girls, this is actually the first pageant system I’ve been involved in and it’s amazing to see how supportive the girls are of each other.’ Says Emma of the competition.

Emma’s fundraising efforts for the Miss Great Britain charities began at the beginning of this year and will continue through to the final with her planning an online festival ‘country against cancer’. Though these are not the only charities Emma works with, the Miss Great Britain 2020 finalists raised £42,000 for Cancer Research UK and Alex’s Wish. ‘I would really love to see people get involved with the work I do with different charities, I have links on my social media pages to donate money to the Teenage Cancer Trust, Cancer Research UK and Alex’s Wish as well as links to donate hygiene products, which I then distribute to people in need. The pandemic has hit charities really hard, it’s great to be able to do my bit to help’ Emma has said she cannot wait until it is safe for her to return to live shows and aims to be able to reschedule her 2020 tour as soon as possible. She hopes that the work she is doing during lockdown will ensure she is in a position to be the best role model possible should she win Miss Great Britain 2021.

Revisited - PW aka The Difference….Oct 2007 Oh how I wanted to be Stevie Robins !!! Yes I know it’s a strange headline but in a ways it’s exactly how I felt in 1982!! Which seems so many years ago? I wanted to be Steve not because he had a pair of pod shoes at school, he was the Spiral table tennis champion or for the fact that he was the first kid from the year above to have blonde streaks put into his hair. No, I wanted to be Steve because he played for Hatfield Town Cricket Club….. not only played but kept wicket, batted with the bravado only to be found with the flush of youth but he was the only player from a talented under 16s squad who at that time could get a game with the men of HTCC who were on top of their game . Leaving the likes of Steve Matthews, Andy Milner, Neil Allen and Lee Burdett in his wake, Steve was setting the pace and regardless of not being the best looking of the bunch he was definitely in front in the cricketing stakes. Steve was not as they say “backward in coming forward” and had a talent for self promotion way ahead of his time but he was definitely talented when it came to cricket. I on the other hand was not only younger but also less talented in both promotion and ability and yet I would have given anything to leave the bosom of the under 16s and play with the gentlemen of HTCC and enjoy the delights of a club tea and a few swift pints after the game. I would sit either in the score box with Dingle or in the oak tree with Russ Parkinson and watch with envy as Steve and the rest of the HTCC players did their best to beat the opposition. Why am I telling you this I can hear you say? Well HTCC are now planning to once again to start a junior team and enable keen young cricketers both male and female to start enjoying this great game. It’s only in its planning stage at the moment but if things work out then HTCC will be on the look out for young cricketers in the area to come down and give it a go. Watch this space for further details of age groups and dates/times. The picture by the way is from the title winning 2nd team squad of 1982 who won the Doncaster 2nd Division Championship. And for the 1st time ever The Difference is offering up a prize of a packet of pork scratchings for anyone who can spot the talented impostor on this picture…. He was in the squad and for some reason is not named!! yours in sport Pictured right to left: Back Row - P Holmes, D Daniels, P Rylands, M Walton, PW aka The Difference…

Zooming Along at Thorne Camera Club Lockdown for photographers is a challenging time, but Camera Club members have embraced the challenge, finding things to photograph indoors, in the garden, or out and about locally. Not only that, they are using the time to organise, catalogue and review their library of images, and use their more recently acquired skills to improve and enhance images from some time ago. Guest speaker Colin Southgate FRPS came up with some ideas of his own which proved interesting and inspiring when he ‘zoomed’ in recently. He treated members to an evening of abstract work created by playing around with Photoshop, Affinity, or other software. Using images he had already taken he used them in novel ways to create panels of images which would stand alone or could be used in other photographs. This type of work is less photography and more digital art, not necessarily everyone’s ‘cup of tea’, it none the less gave an insight into what could be done, especially on a cold, wet and windy winter’s day. More members are experimenting with their photographs to enhance and lift them to another level, using alternate backgrounds, adding in other elements, using textures and lighting for different effects. Watching television, especially the adverts, can lead to new ideas and inspiration, also looking at the work of more experienced photographers and artists. A Members’ Night saw members sharing their knowledge and interests with others with a lighting demonstration, very useful for those indoor still life shots some people are doing at the moment. Well prepared, well delivered, it was useful to understand how different light sources in different positions affect the outcome of your photos. Another member, being a bit of a globe trotter, shared images taken at the extremes of the earth, the Arctic and Antarctic. From landscape to wildlife, geography to culture, it was a fascinating insight into the area and lives of people and animals who live at such extremes. Other members also shared some of their images, including some of the first to be taken after the Camera Club began in 2013. Happy memories of more normal times. It doesn’t look as if we’ll be getting back to normal meetings anytime soon, but there is still the Spring Programme on Zoom to enjoy. These meetings are fortnightly, open for members and potential new members, so if you are interested, please get in touch. Contact 07463821182 or thornecameraclub@yahoo.co.uk

Spring brings new beginnings. Known as the season of new life with blooms of fresh buds and re-emerging of beautiful colours, spring is an important time to take care of your lawn. We’re here to share our expert advice and help your lawn reach its full potential as the centrepiece of your garden. Preparing to spend more time in your garden requires little effort, but the results can be a gorgeous green space to be proud of. With over 30 years’ experience in Lawn Care, we can help you get the very best from your lawn over the spring months and prepare it for the transition into summer. Now winter has passed, the amount of mowing required will naturally increase. We recommend implementing a regular mowing programme, ensuring that mower blades are kept sharp or replaced when needed to avoid causing damage to the grass plant. If possible, it is best for a lawn to be cut at least once a week, to about 25mm (1"). A little maintenance in the form of consistent mowing will help train the grass to be stronger over time. Another useful way to help a lawn through spring is to rake up any dead leaves and twigs and to also cut back overhanging shrubs and plants; this is because grass needs as much direct sunlight and air as possible to stay healthy and green. As the ground starts to warm, it's a good time to repair bare patches that can appear over winter. To do so, carefully rake the patch to create a bed, sow the seeds with a little top-soil and don't let them dry out, they will germinate in a few days (temperature permitting). We can assist in this regard with our bespoke Diamond Green seed and an excellent 100% organic top-dressing. The blossoming of new plants and increased growth of turfgrasses often correlates with an increase of weeds. Not only are unwanted weeds unsightly, but grass will also have to compete with weeds for light, air, water, and nutrients. To combat this, we can apply herbicide from March which is targeted at active weeds present in your lawn. GreenThumb treatments are tailored with the greatest care for lawns in the U.K. We have the solution to transform any piece of grass, whatever the size or condition into a healthy, fresh, and beautiful lawn for you to be proud of all year long. Start your journey to a beautiful lawn. Contact us today by calling 01427 238442 or email us at doncastereast@greenthumb.co.uk.
