Community News DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST It is 14 months since we have been in touch with you and we sincerely hope you have all managed to stay safe and well. We have continued to work behind the scenes on your behalf, albeit on a reduced basis. Your donations still kept rolling in thankfully and some organisations have also been fundraising on our behalf for which we are extremely grateful. As a result we are thrilled to report that we have been able to purchase the biopsy machine for the Urology Department at Doncaster Royal Infirmary! It has taken quite a lot of organising during the pandemic which is why we have not been able to let you know before now. The official handover and photoshoot will be on 22nd June, after which we will put all the information on our website. We must say a very special thank you to one of our volunteers, Jenny Liddle, who has been our main contact with DRI regarding the biopsy machine. She has put in a tremendous amount of time and effort, all while dealing with a very serious family illness. We would also like to thank each and every one of you who has contributed in any way towards our prostate cancer appeal. It has been such a strange time and has been difficult at times for everyone, but we are so very grateful for your support. If you would like to get in touch with us our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. In next month’s issue we hope to launch our new appeal, so please look out for our news then.

It is so good to be back again in print!

Friends of Quarry Park Friday 4 June saw our volunteers meet for their monthly work party under blue skies and welcome sunshine to take part in the Keep Britain Tidy Great British Spring Clean. This was the 6th consecutive year that our group have taken part and there was a record turnout of 19 volunteers, including some new faces. They were supported by 4 members of DMBC staff who ensured the session complied with Covid guidance and that everyone was working safely. Splitting into pairs the volunteers covered the whole of our extensive site in the morning’s session ensuring all corners were left spick and span, 25 bags of rubbish were collected. To mark Volunteers Week 1-7 June Chairman Katrina O’Halloran posted on our Facebook Page “a huge thank you to all our volunteers previous and current for doing such a wonderful job keeping Quarry Park tidy, safe and litter free and to those who keep the admin of the group ship shape behind the scenes plus those who participate on a daily ad hoc basis”. In the 25 years since the “Friends” first came together many people have been involved, making a difference, and helping to shape the Quarry Park we all know and appreciate. To keep and maintain this legacy we would be delighted to hear from new people willing to step up and help as some of our members wish to retire. Plans are moving ahead with installing an additional bench on Quarry Park, sited not too far from the Car Park, to help those less mobile to take a break or sit and appreciate a view of the Park. This has been possible thanks to funding from the DMBC Ward Councillor’s Grant with a top up from Doncaster Rotary St Georges. We are extremely grateful for their assistance. The bench will also serve as a memorial to everyone affected by Covid 19 including NHS and all other frontline workers and will have a plaque to that effect. It will also be a reminder of the many ways in which Quarry Park has had a positive effect on the physical and mental health of the many visitors during the pandemic. We now have a provisional date for our Annual General Meeting which will be Wednesday 21 July at 7 p.m in the Methodist Church, Greens Road, Dunsville. Further details will be published nearer the date Our next Volunteer Work Party will be on Friday 2 July, meeting in St Mary’s Road Car Park at 10 a.m If you want to get involved or find out more about the Friends or Quarry Park please email us on thequarrypark@gmail.com or message our Facebook Page “Friends of Quarry Park”. Janice Bewley, Secretary, Friends of Quarry Park.

Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School News Hi everyone! It’s Mylie, Bertie and Lola here from Year 6. We are bringing you the latest news from Hatfield Woodhouse. Trips are now back up and running for us now and the children and staff are thrilled about this. Year 3 were lucky enough to visit Austerfield Study Centre this week. They had a great time and learnt lots. Miss Turner, class teacher, told us, “It was a great day, the children enjoyed it and learnt so many new things.” Tom in year 3 told us, “It was very adventurouswe got to go and explore the woods and make nature art.” Evie commented, “I really enjoyed it because we got to stay outside and make dens!” Here is a picture of the class enjoying some den building!

It’s been a busy time for us across school with writing competitions. We have been entering lots of competitions! As a school, we have been lucky enough to win first prize in the National Literacy Trust writing competition entitled ‘A Changing World’. Debbie in year 6 won first prize! She won a framed copy of her writing, free books and a £50 voucher. One was signed by Cressida Cowell herself! Also, she won a prize for years 5 and 6- a real illustrator called Liz to teach us how to draw in school! She will be coming in next month and we are very excited! When we spoke to Debbie she said, “I’m so happy I won the competition, I love writing and the prizes are great. I love the fact that I won the illustrator to come into school to teach us so that my peers benefit from me winning too.” Miss Winks, Debbie’s class teacher is also happy about Debbie’s win. She told us, “We are so proud of Debbie’s achievement. We work really hard on writing in class and throughout school, so we are thrilled that she has won for Woodhouse.” Mrs Acton, Debbie’s headteacher commented, “Debbie’s writing is fantastic – a factual account of how the world is changing. I am delighted for her for putting our school on the map- what an achievement! I am also so proud of everyone who entered the competition.” As we speak, the whole school are in the process of entering another writing competition for the Children’s Air Ambulance. The challenge was to write a story which sends their two mascots on a mission. We are so excited to see if we can win this one too! Keep your fingers crossed for us! It's good to be back!!

Hatfield Community Library

I am pleased to tell you that our opening times have been extended and we are now open every morning (except Sunday) and one afternoon. I did say that I would be in the library on Thursday mornings after May 17th but I forgot to say that the library would also be open on that morning. Consequently, nobody came in for books!! However, a couple of people who needed some printing and photocopying did come in, so we were not entirely reduced to talking amongst ourselves. I was pleased to find out that I had not forgotten how to use the computer and I had the time to practise some of the skills which are not commonly used. I will add a reminder here that computers can be booked for a 45-minute session. If you want to use the computers to research your family history, you can use” Ancestry” and “Find my Past” for free in the library. We have also welcomed two new volunteers which has helped to make more opening times available. The opening times areMonday 10:00-4:00 Thursday 10:00-1:00 Tuesday 10:00-1:00 Friday 10:00-1:00 Wednesday 10:00-1:00 Saturday 10:00-12:00 I know that being closed in the afternoon seems to exclude children from the library, however, I hope that opening on Saturday mornings will make it easier for parents to bring school aged children in to borrow books or research a school topic. Or they can come in on Monday after school. Please ring to book a slot or to let us know you will be coming in after school. Pre-school children are welcome in the Children’s section of the library if parents/grandparents/ carers would like to bring them in. Sadly, we have removed all the toys temporarily as it would be difficult to keep them sanitised. We do, however, have a good selection of books for young children and children who are beginning to read. Please continue to book a time to come to the library to browse or exchange books. We can now order books from other libraries so we can offer a wider selection of books to read. Many of our books which were out on loan are now back so that has increased our stock. I have started to read detective novels by Peter Lovesey and can now get them from the library. When I looked at his list of books, I noticed that the very first one was ca lled “T he las t Detective.” If I remember correctly, this was made into a series a few years ago with Peter Davison of Dr Who fame playing the lead role. I also revisited Peter James’ books as one of his was recently on TV. I have managed to read all the books written by my favourite authors and the new authors I have tried. I have discovered that it is not a good idea to watch a serial on TV then read the books or visa versa as the TV series always disappoints.

We have several summer activities booked and hopefully these will go ahead. At the moment, we do not know how many people can attend the events so booking will not open until we have confirmation. Just now the rule of 6 indoors applies and this affects the groups who meet in the library so some are still on zoom meetings. The Games Café has been postponed until September. Summer Activities July 22 Technic Lego 10:00-12:00 Aug 12 Circus Skills 11:00-12:00 July 29 Kimmo 11:00-12:00 Aug 19 Technic Lego 10:00-12:00 Aug 6 Sam’s Safaris 11:00- 12:00 Aug 26 Balloon Modelling 11-12:00 An Evening with Matson Taylor I mentioned some local authors in a previous article. One of whom was Matson Taylor (Neil Taylor to those who know him.) His book “The Miseducation of Miss Evie Epworth” has been selling very well and is now out in paperback. It was also Richard and Judy’s chosen book. There are copies in the library system. A large print at Thorne and a paperback at Bawtry. Non at our library even though he is a local boy. I have been told it is on sale at supermarkets. Neil is now working on the sequel. The good news is that Matson has said he would be delighted to come to our library to talk about his book and answer questions from the audience. We would like to make this an evening event along with refreshments provided and bring your own wine etc. if you wish. The date is to be confirmed but are hoping for it to be held in September To finish off I am returning to the theme of pubs in Hatfield. I mentioned that the library is built on the site of the former Red Lion pub (although strictly speaking it was not so much a pub but a place which sold alcohol. Yes, apparently there is a difference.) I also found evidence of two early pubs which no longer exist, The Spotted Bull which I found in 1867 and 1877 residents lists in Hatfield Woodhouse and The White Hart in 1822 and 1837 lists but I am not sure where it was. This made me wonder how long the other pubs in Hatfield have existed. Again, our local history books have been a source of information and photographs. The photographs of the Ingram which dates from the 1880’s and Bluebell dating from the earlier 1800s are really interesting as they are nothing like the buildings which are there now. I have found a list of the landlords and ladies dating back to 1867 for the Ingram (Henry Soer) and 1822 for the Bluebell (John Cookson) but not the exact dates when the pubs were built. The Ingram had the coat of arms of the Ingram family who were landowners in Hatfield. Of course, the old Ingram was demolished in 1923 and the present one built in 1924 so it is still quite old. The Bay Horse is very similar to the present building. A pub of the same name was mentioned as early as 1798 in the Manor Court Roles when it was transferred to Robert Outwin. The first landlord I found was William Chestnut in 1822. The last photo is of Hatfield House which was privately owned by Mr Charles Marsden in 1860and later became The Welbeck, The Hatfield Country Club and is now Hatfields. If you want to contact the library you can Telephone 842064 or Email hatfieldcommunitylibrary@gmail.com

darts secures Youth Music funding darts has been successful in its bid for three years of Youth Music funding to continue its music and Makaton programme in Doncaster Special Schools. Professional musicians will create music making opportunities with Disabled children and young people that build choice, voice, independence and confidence. Young people will take the lead, designing their own mini-projects and coming up with new tracks, podcasts, radio shows or musicals. There will be lots of performance opportunities in partnership with Doncaster Music Education Hub so that parents, carers and families can see the young people’s talent and progression. This project is supported by Youth Music, using public funding from the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Youth Music is a national charity investing in musicmaking projects that support children and young people aged 025 to develop personally and socially as well as musically. darts’ Assistant Director, Helen Jones says “Disabled young people in Doncaster want opportunities to develop their musical, social and life skills. We know that by using music and Makaton, young people can make huge steps with their confidence, musical ability and independent thinking. We are so grateful to Youth Music for supporting this vital work.” darts will be collaborating with Doncaster SEND (Special Educational Needs & Disabilities) Forum to design and develop this project, meaning that ten Disabled young people will be involved in ensuring that the project meets local needs. To find out more about darts’ work, go to the website www.wearedarts.org.uk and sign up to the e-newsletter or contact hello@wearedarts.org.uk

StainForth4ALL News The changes in restrictions further encourges and reminds us that it’s not much longer until all restrictions are hopefully lifted and we can move through this period of hardship. As current guidance suggested we have started to allow more people in at a time, and we can feel the centre springing back to life. Keeping the streets clean is one of our main missions, thus sparking the creation of our street cleaning team of volunteers, SERV. We passed on the baton to a new generation of street cleaning operatives who were ready and raring to go. The Pupils of Travis St Lawrence C of E Primary School showed a gleaming enthusiasm to the task of litter picking in Hatfield Jubilee Fields. Charlie Mournian, a Stainforth resident and trainee Teaching Assitant at Travis, reached out with an idea to encourage a new generation to keep their community clean. We agreed to funding via an S4ALL Micro Grant and created the signature ‘Little Litter Hero’ Hi Vis Jackets, (showing the community exactly what they are), as well as providing mini litter pickers and bin bag hoops. The children go out and scout the area for litter, sharing their equipment within their teams. As expected the litter picker tools are by far the most exciting to the kids, just as they are to adults! We would like to say thank you to Charlie Mornian, the class teachers, and the Chair of Governors, Lee Pitcher, for inviting us to be part of this great DN7 project. But most of all we want to say a huge WELL DONE to the Children of Travis St Lawrence C of E Primary School - you are doing an amazing job! In June we also celebrated Volunteers week. Stainforth 4 ALL’s volunteers work tirelessly to keep this community centre going and we would not be where we are today without their willingness to donate their time and care to the jobs they’re doing. Lillian Hollidge comes in and puts on an English Speaking class where she teaches basic English skills to those who need or feel like they want to improve their English skills. Annie Rodgers keeps her charity shop in tiptop shape and provides the best bargains around. Charlotte and Tim both keep the community centre running, providing substantial service and customer care. Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our charity and we thank them for all of their efforts. After thanking our volunteers, the return of the hugely successful Volunteering4Health project has made a comeback. This encourages 18-24 year olds with a health condition to volunteer for 10 weeks at S4ALL, at the end you can receive £100 voucher as a thank you for your service. There are a multitude of volunteering opportunites availble for all skill sets ranging from helping in the IT suite, to the charity shop or even SERV. Our latest volunteer Jack Rodgers-McCabe helps our customers with computers and in the charity shop. He generously helps us whenever he can whilst also managing his Type 1 Diabetes. So, if you are also interested then please stop by S4ALL, any help you can give is appreciated and receive a reward in return If you have any queries about the library or S4ALL, please contact us. Plans at Thorne Camera Club As a Camera Club, we have skills and equipment to record life around us, happy or sad occasions, adverse situations such as we are experiencing at the moment with the Covid 19 virus, and all the good brought out in people during these times, whether it be raising funds for good causes or helping neighbours with their shopping. With this in mind, the club thought it would be prudent to have a record of life over the last year and hold an Exhibition themed 'Covid 19' covering all the aspects of events and situations encountered through 'lock-down' periods, wearing masks, social distancing, social gatherings, appreciation of the medical staff and all other key workers with the 'Thursday Evening' applause. Also while our lives have been affected in many ways, 'nature' continues it's progress through the seasons, therefore some of the images by the members will reflect their thoughts around this. The Camera Club does not have a venue at present for an Exhibition with all images displayed together, so, exploring other possibilities, it was decided to approach shops in The Green and Finkle Street to allow us to exhibit our images in their windows. Thankfully we have had positive results. So watch out in August as you are out and about shopping in Thorne for the Camera Club members’ interpretation of the events of the past year. On a glorious, sunny day four members arrived for a photo shoot round the city walls of York . Viewing the walls from the road, they don’t appear very high but once up the steps to the walkway you realise how high they are. The area of York viewed from the starting point up to Micklegate Bar is mainly domestic dwellings, not very historical, except for St. Mary's Convent on Nunnery Lane. After, there are excellent views (all well photographed before) of the Victorian Railway Station, Station Hotel, and York Minster towering above all other buildings. This section of the wall walk ends at the Tower of North St. Postern, close to Lendal Bridge with photo opportunities for the Lendal Tower and the Guildhall. Approaching lunchtime, a member recommended a sandwich shop and lunch was taken, together with a well deserved rest, on the grassed area in front of the Minster along with many other visitors to York. Lunch over, fully rested, the walk continued to the Minster and Dean's Park and round the exterior of the Minster visiting the masons yard and St William's College. A visit to York would not be complete without photographing the Shambles and adjoining streets and market. The visit concluded via Coppergate which completed a well worthwhile day.
