Hello and welcome to a summer crime prevention article. Hopefully the weather will sort itself out and it can decide whether it will be sunny or continue to rain with bursts of intense heat in between.

It is sad to say that during the hot and sunny days that we enjoyed or endured, depending on your point of view. Burglaries occurred by offenders sneaking into properties through open doors or by reaching in through open windows.

While you are outside in your garden, you want to make sure that unwanted visitors do not get into your house. You may leave windows and doors open to let any fresh air circulate your home if it becomes too hot, but sadly, thieves are looking for opportunities like that. The old saying ‘An open window or door is an invitation to a thief’ is still relevant. Never sit in the back garden with your front door unlocked. In fact, always keep your front door locked even when you are in the house. Do not leave ground floor windows or other easily accessible windows open in a room if you or someone else in your family is not in that room. Always shut and lock windows if you leave a room. Do not leave any articles on a windowsill in a room especially car or house keys even if you or someone else is in that room.

If you are enjoying the rear garden and everyone is sat outside, always make sure you can see if anyone enters your house by the back door. We have had thieves sneak into houses via the back door even when families are enjoying a barbecue out in the rear garden. When some people go on holiday, they post pictures on social media of them enjoying themselves socialising or admiring the scenery. Be careful about broadcasting that your house is empty. Personally, I would rather share pictures of my holiday when I have returned home. It may lose the impact, but it does not advertise the fact that I am away from home. Always ask a member of your family or a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your house if you go away. They can put out and return your bin if necessary and very importantly move any parcel that may have arrived by Courier delivery and been left by your front door. If you are expecting a parcel delivery, consider redirecting it to a local collection hub or to your trusted neighbour. That reduces the danger of leaving a parcel on open display to any passing thief.

If you are tidying up your garden and using power or hand tools, do not leave them unattended in your front garden. If you take a break and go into the house or rear garden, do not leave the tools in the front garden. Thieves can and have simply walked off with lawnmowers and expensive hedge trimmers. Thieves can also use hand tools to gain entry to your property. A garden spade makes an ideal crowbar and they have been used in the past to smash glass and force open doors and windows.

I want to mention that a burglar recently attempted to enter a house by snapping the Euro Profile cylinder lock on the rear door. A method I have mentioned several times before. Fortunately, the house holder had already installed snap safe locks on all their doors. This meant that the lock was damaged, but the thief could not enter by that method. The householder didn’t mind the cost of replacing the lock, especially as it prevented the thief from stealing the expensive car that was parked on the drive outside.

THE FRIENDS OF QUARRY PARK

It was another very busy morning on 7th July at our monthly Work Party. 17 eager volunteers joined our 2 DMBC Rangers in the sunshine to tackle a range of tasks including hedge trimming at the Car Park and on Carrot Corner; cutting off overhanging and broken branches in the woods; cutting back nettles and brambles along many of the paths and near the Zip Wire. We also trimmed the grass and weeds from around the way marker and orienteering posts and some of the benches. The vegetation has had a growth spurt due to the recent rain so there was plenty to do.

Our merry band of litter pickers did an amazing job as always, collecting 3 large bags of rubbish. We finished off with well-earned drinks accompanied by cakes from Debra and Katrina’s rhubarb crumble! It was a very hot day, so a visit from the ice cream van would have been very welcome! Maybe next time.

Another great effort from everyone involved, well done and thank you. We have been successful in a number grant applications recently. The funds from these grants will be used later in the year to help us to continue with our tree and bulb planting programme, as well as providing a new bench.

Work parties are usually held on the first Friday of each month, weather permitting. There is always plenty of work to be done, from litter picking, clearing paths and cutting back vegetation. Equipment is provided but please ensure you wear suitable clothing and footwear. The next events are scheduled for Friday 4th August and Friday 1st September 10am – 12 noon, meet at the Green Flag. THORNE CAMERA CLUB

Congratulations to two of our members for their outstanding photography. Jacki Greenwood and Colin Jarvis entered the Yorkshire Photographic Union

'124th Annual Assembly & Exhibition 2023' and out of 3797 entries, Jacki won the 'Rose Bowl' in the DPI section for portraiture with 'Puppy' and Colin's entry 'Yorkshire Shepherdess' was accepted for the Exhibition tour. This is an excellent achievement for Jacki and Colin and will hopefully inspire other members of the club to enter their images into external competitions and salons as a means of widening their photography experience. The summer Outing photo-shoots continued with an evening trip to Hull offering architectural, historical and maritime photography. The members who attended enjoyed an excellent evening of photography around the city of Hull that provided very good selection of images. Everyone arrived in good time for our anniversary trip to Spurn Point for a day's photo-shoot. Apart from a traffic problem on the journey there, a good time was had by all. There is a varied selection of wild life at Spurn Point together with a range of historic WW1 buildings and lighthouses to photograph providing good inspiration for compositional ideas. Members were delighted to see seals on the beach and a wide selection of birds to photograph .

After a full day of photography the members met at the cafe for a chat before leaving on the return journey.

The private evening visit to the Sandtoft Trolley Museum provided some excellent opportunities for photographing the museum's trolley buses, Toy and Cycle Museum, Cinema and an original furnished pre-fab home. Members completed the visit with rides on the buses and a visit to the cafe.

Monty's Monthly Tip

The best way to improve in the art of photography is to practice every day. If possible, carry a camera with you, whether it is a DSLR or a Smartphone, take photographs of your surroundings and this will help to develop your photographic eye, improve your skills of composition and framing, appreciate the light that is available and increase your knowledge of your camera and settings and giving you an appreciation of the everyday items and scenes you see in every day.

Hatfield Woodhouse Phoenix Theatre Group

Over the weekend of the 23rd to 25th June the Phoenix group presented their annual summer show. This year, it was a musical extravaganza, “Thank You for the Musicals. A joyous trip through 70 years of musical theatre.

Rehearsals had started straight after the successful New Year pantomime. Besides the twice weekly rehearsals for the cast, at which they honed and polished the numbers, the back-stage crew, lighting and sound ‘techies’ and costume team went ‘above and beyond’ to ensure a colourful, bright spectacle. The front of house team and catering crew went into ‘military precision planning mode’

As usual, as the show approached, the apprehension level among the whole group rose, would it all go to plan, would the new lighting work, were the costumes spectacular enough, would we hit the high notes!

The first night is always a nervous show but within minutes the response of a great first night audience blew away nerves and the cast responded to the warmth of the house. The audience were treated to a night of glamour, colour and spectacle. They were transported through eight decades of the best in musical theatre. The musical numbers ranged from the humorous and light hearted to heart breaking, tear jerking beauty. The chorus numbers were interspersed with beautiful and moving solos. All in all, a night to remember.

It was not only the evening performances that were a success. The, by now, traditional ‘afternoon tea performance on the Sunday afternoon was as usual a sell-out, with the sumptuous sets and sounds complimented by sumptuous sandwiches and cakes! The group wish to thank our producer Sue Lane for her vision and direction, as well as her patience with our’ stumbles’. Over the years her vision and skill have made each successive show better, brighter and more professional. The standing ovation, we received at the end of the Saturday show is testament to her talent. We also wish to thank Vulcan Renewables for their continued support and grant for the new lighting desk.

With the curtain down on another successful Summer Show,’ read throughs’ for the 2023-2024 festive season’s Pantomime ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ have already started! Put it in your diary!
