Editor’s letter...

‘Long reign our gracious Queen’... and so she has!

60 Years at the realm, so much has changed in this time, however, our Queen has remained consistent in so many ways.

There are lots of events organised over the Diamond Jubilee long weekend from house parties, street parties and village parties to local venue events as well as the spectacular programme of events arranged for the villages of Barnburgh and Harlington! I hope you enjoy spending time with friends, family and neighbours in celebrating this historic milestone. Please send your photographs for publication in the July issue of the Arrow.

Another event to look forward to this month is the Olympic Torch relay which will pass through Doncaster on Tuesday 26th June. Two historic events in one month!

Official Opening of New Footway in Harlington.

Monday 14th May saw the new Footway on Doncaster Road, Harlington, officially opened by ward councillor Cynthia Ransome at the Crown Inn Public house car park.

Many Barnburgh & Harlington parish councillor members were present including The Chair, David Packham who delivered an opening speech informing everyone of the steps taken to achieve this new footway. Guy Taylor, Vice Chair of the parish council introduced Cynthia Ransome and thanked her for all her help and support in achieving this vital safe passage between the villages of Harlington and Barnburgh. The event was attended by ward councillor, Doreen Woodhouse, the landowners who agreed to transfer their ownership of the strip of land (needed for the footway) to DMBC, namely Maurice Richardson, Dick Durdy and Josie Wade and sons and local residents, thankful and grateful for their new footpath.

The parish council has led the campaign for the new footway since 2005. Funding was an issue but changes came about in 2010 which allowed DMBC to find funds in their footpath budget and support from the ward councillors meant funds were provided from their specific budget.

The shortfall of £27000 was funded via Barnburgh and Harlington Parish Council through reserves and a loan.

Most clubs and activities meet in the Church Hall apart from WI who meet in the Village Hall Do you embroider, cross stitch, patchwork, tapestry, crochet or knit?

The sewing Group meets on Monday Morning from 10-30 to 12-00. If you prefer just to Knit, the MU has a knitting group on Tuesday afternoon at 2-00pm. Vests and Cardigans and Jumpers are knitted for Children in third world countries.

Your Feedback I just wanted to say thank you to you and all those who write or publish such interesting and informative 'bits and bobs' in the magazine. The article about the White Greyhound was of particular interest to me in this months magazine, as are the news of what's on in the village and the various phone numbers. So, many thanks to you all and keep up the good work.

Mr & Mrs Hemsworth Warmsworth Resident Hi Michelle, many thanks for your support for Yorkshire Main Commemorative Trust , we have received very positive feedback and reached a new audience. Frank.

Do you enjoy Painting? The Art Group meets on Wednesday afternoon at 2-00pm.

How about Local History? The History Society meets twice a month on Wednesday Morning at 10-30am.

If you prefer something more energetic, Line Dancing is on offer on Thursday afternoon at 2pm. Our two Choirs also meet every week.

If you would like to join the MU we meet every second Tuesday of the month at 2.00pm.

Alternatively Friendship Group is on Monday evening on the last Monday of the Month. Both these groups lead to other activities for members who would like to join in. WI meet on the Third Monday of the month at 7 o’clock in the Village Hall.

We are very lucky in our two villages, there is a lot to do including this year celebrating the Queens Jubilee. There have been meetings going on in preparation, anybody is welcome to come with their ideas.

Not leaving the young ones out we have a thriving Rainbows and Brownies too.

WARMSWORTH CRICKET CLUB After the cancellation of the first 8 matches the season has finally got underway but the start has been disappointing with the three games that have been played ending in defeat. Hopefully things will improve over the coming weeks along with the weather.

As I reported last month, the sponsorship for the season has been sorted and we now have the new playing kit for the season which will be worn by all Players playing Saturday’s and Sundays. We would once again like to thank The Tara Lounge, Philford Design Engineers and Yorkshire Kitchen for all their support, along with all the other Sponsors/Advertisers at the club.

During June we are hosting two Area Representative Matches with the visit of Heavy Woollen Under 11’s on the 17th June to Play Doncaster Under 11’s followed the week after by Doncaster Joe Lumb U17’s v Pontefract Joe Lumb. Both matches starting at 2pm.

If anyone out there has any influence over the weather could you please organise some sunshine over the next few months, free membership is available for anyone who can do so.

Saturday 2nd June 10 00 am - 2 30 pm: Jubilee Summer Fair at St Peter’s Church, Barnburgh.

Come and browse the many stalls around the Church, refreshments will be available and those manning the stalls will be dressed in red, white and blue with the stalls decorated accordingly.

There is also an exhibition - with a royal theme - by the local Heritage Group inside the Church.

Sunday 3rd June 2 00 pm: First Special Peal of Bells by the bell-ringers of St Peter’s to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Supported by members of the local choirs, with readings and hymns.

Monday 4th June 11 30 am - 12 noon: Dedication of ‘Jubilee Tree’ and unveiling of plaque at the entrance to the Church Lane Recreation Ground.

Attended by leading members of the local community in Barnburgh and Harlington. David Packham, Chair of Barnburgh and Harlington Parish Council will introduce the ceremony, and a plaque commemorating the planting of the 'Jubilee Tree' to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee will be unveiled by a resident who was born in 1952 in one of the villages and who still lives there.

Doncaster Advanced Motorists Motorway Technique Dear readers, Joining a motorway.

Look well ahead and plan your approach early. Use your off-side wing mirror to help match your speed to that of the traffic in the left-hand lane of the motorway when you join from a slip road.

Select the lane that allows you to merge most smoothly. Usually the right hand lane on the slip road as you will be able to see traffic on the motorway earlier and the traffic on the motorway will be able to see you on the slip road earlier.

Where necessary give a right indicator signal. Do it in time to allow for a reaction from other drivers on the main carriageway who may pull over into the adjacent lane, giving you the chance to merge smoothly. Plan your acceleration on the slip road, so that you don’t have to brake or accelerate further to join to traffic flow.

Constantly use your mirrors to check the main carriageway and other traffic around you and never commit to changing carrageways without considering a brief glance over your right shoulder.

Difficult approaches.

When the motorway slip road rises up to join the main carriageway, your vision and anticipation maybe limited so you have less time to judge the traffic flow before merging. To minimise this problem, avoid racing other vehicles up the slip road and stay back from the vehicle in front.

Always use the two-second rule when following another vehicle.

On short slip roads you may have to be very decisive. That may mean you need to accelerate very firmly to achieve a safe merging speed in time.

Some slip roads have cross-hatchings to separate the lanes of traffic. Those with solid white surrounds can only be entered in an emergency.

Leaving the motorway.

Motorway junction signposts are usually positioned one mile and half mile in advance. Use them to plan your speed and to select a suitable lane position early.

Junction countdown signs appear 300, 200 and 100 yards before each exit.

Judge your exit speed carefully especially after driving for long periods at high speeds. Lift your vision up to look further ahead and never be caught out by a short or sharply curving exit slip road. Use your mirrors as you leave the motorway, especially if you plan to take the right-hand lane on a multi-lane exit slip road.

On a busy carriageway, it’s always worth taking a quick glance over your right shoulder to check for any drivers trying to cut across from the faster lanes of the motorway to exit in one hazardous manoeuvre. This tactic is likely to be carried out at a dangerously high speed.
