ROYAL AIR FORCE LINDHOLME Adapted and Edited for publication by Anthony Catherall acknowledgement to Margaret Draper

CHAPTER 3 Mr Townshend immediately arranged for it to be made in a form suitable for production and for its application to a wide variety of other aircraft, all of which had their individual problems of installation. Later, it was also arranged for manual dropping from a variety of transport aircraft not equipped with bomb doors. The Official War History states that the gear was in use by 1942, for it records the dropping of a Lindholme gear to a Wellington crew ditched in the Bay of Biscay in the August of that year. (1) Many years later Air Chief Marshal Sir Augustus Walker recalled the first occasion on which he dropped a Lindholme Dinghy: “It was very shortly after we had (rashly) notified all flying units of the availability of our rescue dinghy. I was searching some long way out in the North Sea for a crew in a dinghy. The subsequent drop went off perfectly, and the dinghy inflated. This was a most exciting experience after all our trials – but I was filled with a great chagrin when the crew in the dinghy (which had an unusual rectangular shape) got out their paddles and started rowing away from the Lindholme Dinghy. Nothing I could do would persuade them to go towards it – and, of course, RT communication was a long way off. I radioed for a high-speed launch to come out, and remained orbiting the dinghy for some three hours before the HSL arrived – by which time I was as much concerned that the Lindholme Dinghy be picked up as the occupants of the other dinghy. When I returned to base, I demanded that the crew be interviewed on landing (at Immingham) to find out why they had not carried out the drill just recently announced in an Air Ministry Order. I was woken up in the middle of the night to be told that the crew had been landed safely, that they had been interviewed and the reason they didn’t know the Lindholme Dinghy drill was that they were the crew of a Heinkel III.

Lindholme was also to see the development of another original piece of equipment later in the war. The unit diary records the installation of a Silloth later in the war. This was a rudimentary flight simulator, the forerunner of the more sophisticated systems of today and was for training pilots on Halifaxes and Lancasters while sitting firmly on the ground. The officer in charge of the project, Wing Commander Isles, an organ builder in civilian life, was subsequently posted to Royal Air Force Drem to develop similar equipment for use in the training of Mosquito pilots. As an amusing footnote to the technical progress made at Lindholme during the war, the following extracts from the Officers’ Mess Minute Book show that the horse was far from obsolete in the age of aerial combat: Minutes of a Committee Meeting held at 1400 hours Monday 14th September 1942 Wagonette: The PMC informed the meeting that an opportunity had occurred for the purchase of the chassis of a hearse car and wheels for the sum of £17. This had been bought but if it was decided by a General Meeting that a Wagonette was not required then arrangements had been made for the disposal with no loss to the Mess. (1)

Magna Carter plinth unveiled to recognise Epworth Baron’s role On Saturday 11th August, Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council and Baroness of the Isle of Axholme Liz Redfern, unveiled a specially designed plinth to mark 800 years since the signing of the Magna Carta (in 1215), which involved local baron William de Mowbray. William was one of 21 barons involved in the signing of the Magna Carta by King John at Runnymede in June 1215 – one the most famous documents in the world that ensured the rights of the common man were upheld. Due to the important historical connec on, the Epworth Magna Carta 800 Society was set up in 2015 to run for one year. It encouraged local residents, schools, businesses and council representa ves to par cipate in celebra ons to mark 800 years since the Magna Carta was signed. The Society designed a programme of community events hosted around Epworth – the plinth being one of them. The Society closed in 2016 following their year of events and exhibi ons. The plinth is their legacy and will stand for decades to come. It will mark the importance of the Magna Carta 800 and William de Mowbray’s involvement in it. th The Magna Carta 800 Anniversary Commemora on Na onal Commi ee has recognised the group. It is also supported by Epworth Town Council, North Lincolnshire council and Epworth Civic Trust. Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “This is a momentous occasion that recognises and acknowledges William de Mowbray’s significant role in the Magna Carta. Not many people know of his connec on to this significant world‐wide document so it is fi ng to unveil the plinth in his memory. "Epworth is a fantas c place and is steeped in history. The event will go down in local history as a very momentous occasion. "The Isle of Axholme is a special place in North Lincolnshire and the event seeks to recognise the importance of its history."

These two lovely boys are Rocky & Joey- two year old Lurchers who need a new home as a pair. They are lovely natured, gentle, affectionate dogs with nice manners, and have lived happily with children. They are ok with other dogs, if a bit excitable around them, but are not good with cats. They have been family pets, and are typically laid-back in the home. Rocky & Joey are neutered, fully vaccinated and microchipped. If you would like to come and meet this smashing pair, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705.

Congratulations to local girl Gabriella Spencer from Belton who has recently competed at The Equerry Bolesworth CSI**** International in Cheshire. Very tough opposition of all ages This didn't phase Gabriella who won her class with nearly 6 seconds in front of 2nd place. A massive achievement! 2 weeks prior Gabriella had been trampled on by her horse after a fall whilst competing in Grantham with a suspected broken rib and fib.

Epworth and District Flower Club July 2018 The July meeting of the ladies of Epworth Flower Club took a different format from usual. A relatively new member was introduced and gave an extremely interesting talk about her involvement with the RHS Feel Good Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show. Sarah Armitage, the Senior Events Manager for NHS England, began by explaining that the NHS was keen to celebrate its 70 year history and one of the events to publicise this was to work with the Royal Horticultural Society. Together they worked to raise awareness of the positive impact horticulture has on mental health by creating a garden for the Chelsea Flower Show which would then be recreated in an NHS mental health trust location. Sarah told us how, under severe time pressures, 54 mental health trusts were invited to compete to create a Feel Good Garden. The garden had to be planned and designed from scratch which involved the development of the location, with consideration of underground pipes etc, wildlife, accessibility for inpatients and the wider society and availability and support for its continued maintenance. The winning trust was Camden and Islington Foundation Trust. The site at Highgate hospital, where the garden will be recreated, provides care and treatment for vulnerable adults in a built -up area of London where green space is limited. Some high - profile individuals were involved in the decision making and Sarah told us how she worked alongside RHS Award-winning designer Matt Keightley, Guy Barter, RHS Chief Horticulturalist and Tim Kendall, National Clinical Director for Mental Health. The results of the competition combine calming colours of plants, aromatic herbs, grasses which encourage wildlife and meandering paths which encourage lingering. The show garden was built in three weeks but it is now under construction in its location with patients and staff being involved with development and planting. The RHS have agreed to donate two more gardens to the NHS in the next two years. The event created an opportunity and highlighted the need for conversation about mental health issues. “Simply being in a garden or green space can make you feel happier and healthier. There is an increasing evidence base demonstrating the positive impact that gardens and gardening can have on mental health.” (RHS Feel Good Garden) Sarah also told the members about innovative GP Social Prescribing which is taking place in some areas of the country and some discussion followed. As usual we concluded with a vote of thanks for a very interesting and different evening. Refreshments followed and there was a chance to buy pots and plants in support of this year’s charity which is the Alzheimer’s Society.

The September meeting on Monday 10th will be in the usual location, the Stephen Jones Community Hall, Haxey at 7.30pm. Jo Smith will give a demonstration entitled “My world of Inspiration”. The October meeting on Monday 8th will be an Autumn workshop and watch for details of the Open Meeting in November when Andrew Grisewood will “Unwrap the Season”. Do join us for any meeting.
