Welcome to the September issue of the Arrow The Summer has come and gone and we hope all your Summer events got off to a great start and avoided the thundery showers we experienced in August!

The 34th Festival of the Plough on Sunday 21st September is the big event in September. It’s a great experience and a great event for all the family. Make sure you don’t miss it!

This month we have another competition courtesy of Doncaster Races, to win a pair of tickets for the Racing Post Trophy held in October. Competition entry details are available on page 11.

The Isle of Axholme Horticultural are holding their 24th Annual Show on

Saturday 30th August in the Imperial Hall, Epworth.

The Isle of Axholme Garden Club will hold its next meeting on Tuesday 9 September at 7.30pm in the Imperial Hall, Epworth. The speaker to be confirmed. All are welcome. The competition will be “One dahlia plant grown in a pot” so if you have a nice dahlia bring it along – it might win. £2 for visitors which includes tea/ coffee. There will also be a raffle and book sale.

Date for your Diary Vanessa Cook from Stillingfleet Lodge Nurseries, near York, will be giving a talk about “Foliage Better than Flowers?” at the Imperial Hall on Tuesday 14 October – 7.30 pm start.

On Monday 21st July 2014, members of the Belton Autumn Club went on an outing to Lincoln. It was a very warm day but members of the Club were able to cool down a bit as they enjoyed a pleasant cruise on the 'Brayton Belle' which took them out along the canal and into the countryside. After the boat trip members enjoyed a while to get about to relish other delights along the water front and in the town. The services of Selwyn Motors were much appreciated and the smooth ride to and from Lincoln enhanced the outing. The Belton Autumn Club was founded quite a few years back now by the late Joan Biddle and has thrived ever since. Anyone over the age of 55 is welcome to come along and join us.

We meet every Thursday afternoon from 2pm until 4 pm. Members pay a weekly fee of £1.50 and this cover refreshments and a raffle. Card games, scrabble and dominoes are popular and the afternoon always ends with a game of bingo. Funds are used to pay for one or two free treats during the year including the annual Christmas Dinner.

Isle Rescue celebrated their 1st birthday on the 15th August. We have now re-homed 65 dogs, and 42 cats, and we thank everyone for all their support, and for all the donations of money, food, toys and bedding for our dogs and cats- everything really does help! And of course, a huge thank you to all of those lovely people who have adopted one of our lovely cats or dogs. We couldn’t continue without all of you.

The Isle of Axholme Physically Handicapped Society raised £535 at the their recent Coffee Morning. The event was held in the Coronation Hall in Owston Ferry. Everyone enjoyed coffee and scones and there were various stalls and a prize raffle.

The organisers would like to convey their thanks to everyone who contributed and supported the event to make it a great success.

The group meet on the first and third Thursday of the month at the Epworth Youth Centre.

Reports have been received regarding off road bikes, originally the location was given as Stealgoose Lane, Temple Gardens and Belshaw Lane.

Update = The Neighbourhood Team have taken an active role by patrolling the areas highlighted and responding to incidents as and when they are called by the members of the public. The offenders have moved onto other local areas and the Neighbourhood Team are continuing to patrol these new areas along with the existing ones.

If you do see anyone riding these motorcycles please contact us at the time they are occurring and providing area where seen, direction of travel, and brief description of rider and motorcycle.

Information Burglaries - There has been an increase in Burglaries across the Isle for both dwellings and out buildings.

Please ensure you keep your home secure at all times locking windows and doors. Also keep keys and expensive items out of sight and consider security lighting around the outside of your property and light timers inside your property. If you are going to be away for any length of time, let your neighbours know so they can also keep an eye on your property. Mark It, Track It - register your valuables at www.immobilise.com to make sure the police know that the items belong to you. If your valuables do go missing or gets stolen, having it registered can increase the chance of it being identified and returned. Register your valuables ITS FREE !!

Community News Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust News Waders with fish

The September meeting of West Butterwick and District Gardening Club takes place on Monday 1st September at West Butterwick Village Hall at 7.30 and is a talk by Rudie from Rudies Roots Nurseries entitled ‘Environmentally Friendly Christmas Trees’.

Everyone is welcome – all ages and all levels of gardener Members£1, non members £2 The October meeting will be held on Monday 6th October and is a talk by Jo Bennison from Bennisons Peonies.

On a warm July evening, in the grounds of Beltoft Grange, Andrew Grisewood a national demonstrator of the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies (N.A.F.A.S.), brought his show of 'Panache' to an audience of members of Epworth & District Flower Club and N. Lincs. N.S.P.C.C., and guests. He quipped it had been 19 years since the Club had booked him, so 'he must have made a lasting impression'!.

Mrs. Carolyn Drury (for E.&D.F.C.) welcomed everyone to a marquee set with tables decorated by flower club members of stripy jugs filled with garden flowers in pink and blue or zany orange and cerise. While we enjoyed homemade cake and cordial or Prosecco, Mrs. Lucy Barker (for the N.S.P.C.C.) reminded us of the necessity for the existence of the organisation and the need to support them, whilst also enjoying ourselves.

Andrew, with the assistance of Oliver, created a

series of floral designs with a lime-green, lilac and pink theme set to music, whilst telling us of the people, places or objects that had inspired them.

For example, Liberace was epitomised by a silver candelabra embellished with crystals (pictured).

Silvered Kentia palms, tree ivy, and Eryngium 'Miss Wilmot's Ghost' provided a 'foil' to a bouquet of white roses with a pink edge (called 'Aqua' because they grow in water). Lilac Freesias and 'Moonlight' purple carnations were added so the bouquet was made to look like it passed through the candelabra, by the reinsertion of cut stems into the floral foam from underneath. Oliver lit the candles from a matchbox covered in Swarovski crystals, to the voice of Peggy King accompanied on the piano by Liberace singing 'When Liberace winks at me'.

A gold ormolu and green marble candlestick was decorated with looped Aspidistera leaves, Choisya, 'Midori' Anthuriums and 'Greentrix' fluffy Carnations, with poppy heads for a different texture while we were told a 'Tale of Two candlesticks'; a duplicate candlestick appearing later, already made 'Blue Peter' style. The first candlestick was bought for 50 pence in an antique shop in Blackpool, while the second was discovered on 'e-bay'. It's owner said his Aunt saw it in the now demolished Polygon Hotel, Southampton where many passengers from The Titanic spent their last night ashore.

The fountains of the Belagio Hotel, Las Vegas (featured in 'Oceans 11') inspired the 'grand finale': an arrangement in a green urn on a plinth containing various-shaped variegated leaves, moss, and poppy heads in a 14'' green foam ring.

'Shamrock' and 'Greentrix' carnations were interspersed with 'Norma Dean' roses resembling Marilyn Munro's famous white dress: fabulous and scented.

Mrs. Anne Everatt (for E.&D.F.C.) gave the vote of thanks to Andrew and Oliver; Carolyn Drury and her family; members of the E.&D.F.C. and the N.S.P.C.C.; and everyone attending for supporting the event in aid of the N.S.P.C.C. The Flower Club meets again on Monday 8th August 2014 at 7.30 p.m. in the Stephen Jones Community Hall, Low St., Haxey with a demonstration by Eileen Barraclough entitled 'Surprise'. Visitors welcome.

THE EPWORTH COOKBOOK REVISITED Devised & written by Anthony Catherall

This month and every month we feature a unique recipe from The Epworth Cookbook 1982.

NO 9. CHOCOLATE MOUSSE Page 16

2 tablespoons of sugar 2 eggs 1 cup of drinking chocolate 1/2 oz of gelatine 1 tablespoon of cocoa Large tin of evaporated milk (chilled) Grated chocolate or chocolate flake (for decoration) METHOD Dissolve 2 tablespoons of sugar in a cup of water & boil for a minute. Whisk in a cup of powdered drinking chocolate & a tablespoon of cocoa and boil for a few minutes. Cool to tepid and beat in eggs.

Dissolve gelatine in 1/2 cup of water over a gentle heat stirring until lumpfree. Add to chocolate mixture all at once, whip the chilled evaporated milk until thick & fluffy, add the cooled chocolate mixture while beating hard.

Pour into a large glass bowl & sprinkle on the grated chocolate or chocolate flake.

Brooks Mill, below in colour July 2014, the stunning refurbished home of Steve & Jane Pluta, purchasing the Mill from John & Carol Thomsett in 2012. Above, Brooks Mill in 1935, Walking along the locally named road 'Cut Throat Hill' in the summer sunshine then were, Kathleen Trimingham, Charlie Kershaw & Aubrey Warren. Kathleen and Charlie were later married and had two sons Anthony & Alwyn.

For many years as the name suggests, Harry & Mary Brooks worked the Mill daily. Harry stands in the doorway (inset) and Mary underneath the sail right. Passing on to son Billy, both families lived for a time in two cottages on the opposite side of the road says Marjorie Trimingham (100) whose close friend was Marjorie Brooks. It is recorded. that Billy in retirement, later lived in 1 Moorfield Grove, Fieldside, Epworth. In 1923 the Mill was sold to Herbert John & Charles Ernest Elmshurst for ÂŁ600.00. During 1969, planning permission was granted for the first home by John Barry Wood & Frank Robert Kerry. Other former owners since 1972 included, C.L.Corfield Ltd., & William & Gwendoline Odell. Interestingly according to Ordnance Survey maps, yet another mill stood many years ago north-east of Brooks Mill, about 200 yards away in Mill House Farm.

TIME FLIES

How old are you? Depending on our age we might respond differently. Some will very specifically give their age as seven three quarters, others most proudly as nearly 18, or more cautiously as 40 something.

All these response will be familiar to you, in fact they might equate to your own!

We will all appreciate that time is a great gift, how we yearn for more of it! We measure it out by the minutes, hours, days and months, and the years that contain differing experiences according to our age.

No wonder that we consider special times to be worthy of recording and noting. For myself, Sue and I have marked a ruby wedding this year, and this has been an anniversary celebration, because it has been a time of pleasure and rejoicing. It was marked with our family and friends.

However at the start of August we also marked 100 years since the start of the First World war, hardly a cause of rejoicing, but much more sombre and restrained as we recall how the world plunged into four tortuous years of mutual slaughter. Not a celebration, but a more neutral commemoration. This we observe not only with family, but with those with whom we have a common history, either as allies or enemies, because it has had an impact on our lives.

Secular history has its commemorations, such as Oak Apple day on May 29th. But who today observes this anniversary - a day which marked the restoration of the monarchy in 1660? Religious history has given us Good Friday and Christmas day-we still remember those.

We may have forgotten Oak Apple day, but we still recall the impact of the First World war- for us a commemoration rather than a celebration.

Lions help The Thurlow The Isle of Axholme Lions Club is delighted to have been able to help the Epworth War Memorial Field (The Thurlow) to improve the children's playground area. The donation made by the Lions was £1200, which will be used both to refurbish some existing equipment and to buy some new equipment. Graham Guest, newly appointed Lions President, said: "The Thurlow was originally created as a memorial to those Epworth men killed and injured in the first world war. It's great to see the facility is still used by all crosssections of the community, and the Lions club is pleased to play a part in its continued development."

“PROMOTING THE PLOUGH” The Festival of the Plough Committee is working with the Rotary Club of Epworth and the Isle of Axholme to “Promote the Plough” by organising a window dressing competition in Epworth for shops and businesses between September 7th 2014 and September 21st 2014 which is the actual date of the 34th Festival of the Plough to be held again at High Burnham Farm Epworth DN9 1DD Packs to assist shops and businesses with their window dressing will be distributed on Friday 5th September 2014 and judging will take place on Monday 15th September 2014 with results hopefully being recorded in the Epworth Bells on the 18th September 2014. Representatives of Epworth and Isle of Axholme Rotary Club and the Festival of the Plough Committee will undertake the judging for The Rotary Trophy which will be held by the winner for one year. 34th FESTIVAL OF THE PLOUGH 2014 Sunday 221st September 2014

The ploughing competitions held on several acres of land on High Burnham Farm Epworth (just of Junction 2 M180) provide the big attraction of this 34th Festival of the Plough. After the blessing of the Plough at 10-00 a.m. at least 10 wonderful Shire horses will be with us on the day, ploughing in pairs with their owners.

Many of the usual features that are so popular will be there The Gallopers, the Classic Cars, Poultry, Craft Tents, Scarecrow Competitions and the Trade Stands and the entertainment in the main area will make for a good family day out.

Prices have been held at the same level of £6.00 and all children accompanied by an adult go free.

This year even the programme is free with thanks due to all our many advertisers old and new.

Great Entertainment Due At Epworth’s Thurlow Pavilion Another night of great entertainment is on the cards for later in the year when Pacific Curls - a band with an international reputation – will be appearing at Epworth’s Thurlow Pavilion.

It will be a one-night only gig and takes place at the Pavilion – a registered charity- on the night of Friday, October 3rd. Door open at 7.20pm for an 8pm start.

Tickets, costing £8 each, will be available from end of August at the Epworth high fashion shop - Serendipity – on the town’s High Street and by telephoning (01427) 872491.

Pacific Curls make music that is both worldly and enthralling. With a cornerstone of backbeat Pacific rhythms, vivacious Scottish fiddle playing and evocative Maori instrumentation and lyrics.

The group has pioneered a fusion sound that seamlessly blends their indigenous roots, making classifying their sound a challenge.

Their use of jazz chord transitions, traditional Scottish fiddle tunes, expressive vocals, political and moving lyrics in both Maori and English, their use of world instruments with Pacific style beats and moods, shakes and bakes it all into a contemporary intriguing edginess.

They have made appearances at the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games celebrations, WOMAD New Zealand , WOMAD UK, WOMAD Earth Station, City of London Festival and Borneo Rainforest World Music Festival – to name but a few.

Pacific Curls is a band that creates a window into the global sounds of the Pacific, Scotland and beyond.

The evening of brilliant entertainment will be brought to Epworth by LIVELINCS, the Rural Touring Scheme for North Lincolnshire sponsored by The Arts Council, England.

Those attending are advised to bring their own drinks and nibbles.

Axholme Bridleways Association would like to thank everyone who was involved in the running of the event and those who came and took part in raising money for the charity and ABA. Guests are welcome and Membership is only £5 a year for adults, so if you walk, run, cycle or ride in the Isle of Axholme you are invited to join this local community group who are actively involved in creating and maintaining better off-road routes locally.

Report by Laura Jayne Arrand On Saturday 2nd August, Axholme Bridleways Association held its second Fun Day which raised £355 for Lindsey Lodge Hospice. Despite the forecast, the day went ahead and luckily the weather held out for most of the classes although the junior games were in the rain. Three new Members joined ABA and a great day was had by all for a great cause.

A special thank you goes out to Sally and Jeremy Maw for hosting the event this year at Micklehills Farm, East Lound. Thanks also go to everyone who helped run the event and those who took part for their support. Axholme Bridleways Association meets regularly and welcomes new members who walk, run, cycle or ride in the area and you can visit their stand at Epworth Show on 25 August to find out more about what this community group does in this area. The group has an active facebook page and website and are also attending the Festival of the Plough in September.

Lions help Air Ambulance to stay in the air The Isle of Axholme Lions Club raised an amazing £3800 for the Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance Service from their recently held dinner in the Vulcan hangar at Robin Hood Airport. More than 160 guests dined under the wings of the mighty Vulcan, enjoyed a guided tour of the plane and were privileged to hear Martin Withers, DFC, talk about how he, as pilot, and colleagues overcame great obstacles to bomb the Port Stanley runway. NEWS FROM BELTON BARROW RACE The rescheduled Belton Barrow Race will take place on Sunday 14th September at the Crown Inn, Belton with the first race commencing at 1.30pm. Competitors are asked to register at 1pm for adults and veterans and half an hour before the race for the children’s races. This year the fruit in my garden seems to be ready a few weeks earlier than usual. The latest fruits to follow this pattern are apples and pears. A combination of there being no snow last winter and few severe frosts together with fine growing conditions with plentiful rain and sunshine have left the fruit in good shape. The recent storms have brought down quite a lot of fruit to ease the burden on the trees.

Although the June drop removed some fruit, it is often still necessary to take out fruit where there are more than two items per bunch so that the remaining fruit can grow to a good size. This assumes of course that you can reach the fruit! Even though the recent storms will have made your job a bit easier, it is still worth having a look at your fruit trees to carry out this late season thinning. Take out any damaged fruit and any that are under size, leaving the larger king fruit if possible.

With quite a lot of fruit now on the ground you might be thinking about what you can do with it. It may be a little tart for eating fresh, but you can always cook with it. Making it into jam and chutney is another option. The Apple of Your Isle holds a number of apple and pear pressing days each autumn at which you can bring your fruit and turn it into juice. This year we will be holding 3 such pressing days in October in Epworth, Crowle and Westwoodside. Further details of these days will be in the next edition of the Arrow. Before then you will be able to see us pressing fruit at the Festival of the Plough at the end of September. Please come and talk to us about your apples and pears and what you do with them.

Driving Test Facts Dear readers, The driving test’s been going for years. But here are a few facts: Mr Bean was the first person to pass the driving test in 1935… fact! But it’s not that Mr Bean, it was Mr J Beene who paid a grand total of 37p (7d / 6p in old money) to take the test.

There were no test centres in 1935 so you had to arrange to meet the examiner somewhere like a post office, train station or town hall. The test was suspended for the duration of World War Two and didn’t resume until 1 November 1946. The theory test was introduced in 1996, replacing questions about the Highway Code during the practical test.

Driving was much more hazardous 75 years ago, 7,343 people were killed on Britain’s roads when only 2.4 million vehicles were in operation - in 2008, 2,538 people were killed with 26.5 million vehicles on the road.

Candidates could book their theory test online for the first time in December 2001. The pass rate in 1935 was 63 per cent compared to 46 per cent in 2009. 1969 saw the first driving test set for an automatic vehicle. Since 1935 more than 46 million tests have been taken.

In 1935, when Leslie Hore-Belisha, became the new Transport Minister, he introduced the driving test – first in March as a voluntary test and then it became compulsory in June. During the 1930s safety glass was made compulsory for windscreens after terrible injuries had been caused by accidents in cars with ordinary glass. Seat belts did not appear until the 1950s but were not made compulsory in front seats until 1983.

Arm signals out of the window were withdrawn from the test in 1975 and more modern additions to the test have included a theory test in 1996, the hazard perception section of the theory test in 2002 and questions about vehicle safety and maintenance.

Changes to the test and other safety initiatives, such as improvements to vehicles, have resulted in a reduction in road deaths in Great Britain, Which now has some of the best road safety records in the world.

In 2008 there were 34 million cars on the road and 2,538 people were killed in road accidents – DSA is still passionately working towards further improvements in road safety.

When announcing the introduction of the driving test, Leslie Hore-Belisha said, “Driving is an art in which those who are engaged should, in the interest of their own and of the public’s safety; take the greatest pains to make them proficient.”

Decades later this still holds true and is summed up in the DSA’s maxim, Safe Driving for all.
