St Andrew's Church-September Events Thursday 12th September commencing at 7 pm. Tony Catherall will give a talk on Epworth/St Andrew's photographs of the past. In addition Karl the organist will play tunes on the organ. Don Ayris will also play some Shadow's music on his guitar.

Friday 13th commencing at 7.30 pm Rosemary Wheeler is to deliver a presentation on the Melwood Priory.

Lincolnshire Open Days. The church will be open with stewards on duty during the period Thursday 12th September to Sunday 15th September between 10am to 4 pm with the exception of Sunday which will be 2pm to 4pm.

This will be an opportunity to view the church following the extensive reordering. It being an outstanding example of an harmonious blend of old and new materials.

Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th September the church will be the venue for a local wedding Exhibition. Saturday the event will be from 10am until 4 pm whilst Sunday will be from 2 pm to 4 pm. by Maureen Sutton. The competition is one dahlia plant grown in a pot. All events start at 7pm at the Imperial Hall Epworth doors open from 6.45pm. The September meeting of West Butterwick and District Gardening Club takes place on Monday 2nd September at West Butterwick Village Hall at 7.30pm. The speaker is Chris Simpkins, latterly Chairman of Humberside Chrysanthemum Society.

The Isle of Axholme Horticultural Society will be holding its Annual Show for 2013 on Saturday 31 August at Epworth's Imperial Hall.

Staging can be done on the Fri evening before from 6-7pm and from 8am to 10.45am on the Sat morning. All the usual show classes - flowers, vegetable and fruit, floral art, novelty and craft and cookery plus classes for children to get them involved and with a prize for each child who enters. Great raffle prizes and delicious refreshments available. Presentation of cups at 2.30pm, auction of produce at 3pm and raffle drawn at 3.30pm.

The Epworth and District W.I. is a small diverse group of ladies who are perhaps typical of the new breed of W.I.s springing up all over the country. They do not sing Jerusalem nor do they embrace the jam making image. However they do adhere to the principles of the W.I. and have interesting and informative meetings, plus additional purely social events. Maybe you would like to join them? The ladies meet on the second Tuesday of the month in the Epworth Imperial Hall (small room) at 7.30pm. The September meeting will host a member of the staff from Scunthorpe Museum who will talk about the current exhibition being held there entitled "Up the High Street", including the changes in the High Streets of North Lincolnshire from Victorian times to the recent past, and the development of shops, cafes and local trades and their evolution over time. The October meeting will see a return visit from the Leeder Brothers who entertain with fascinating antique artefacts. Visitors are most welcome to come along and see if the W.I may be for you!

An important milestone has been passed on the road to reinstating one of North Lincolnshire’s popular tourist attractions to the way it

The Old Rectory is famous throughout the world as the childhood home of John and Charles Wesley, who founded a movement that went on to become what is now the worldwide Methodist Church.

The latest repairs, along with the ‘Putting the hearth back into the home’ project, comprises phase one of the major development plans called ‘Welcome Home’. The plans aim to reinstate the building – both internally and externally - to how it would have looked when occupied by the Wesley family.

The entire Welcome Home project includes restoring the whole house and greatly improving access and visitor facilities. It is expected to cost £2m but is being carried out in small phases.

Work on the outside of Epworth’s Old Rectory has just been completed and the scaffolding that had encased the Grade 1 listed building has now been removed. The Old Rectory – an accredited museum – has undergone major conservation work which included repairing and reappointing walls, installing historic chimney pots and repairs to the roof.

In addition, rotten timbers to the top dormer windows have been sensitively repaired in order to complete almost all of the external decoration.

“The aim is to restore the Old Rectory to the way it would have looked when first built in the early 1700’s,” said the museum’s curator, Rev Claire Potter. “Following the completion of the latest repairs, it is now in a far better state than it was,” she added.

BIGGER & BETTER THAN EVER 33rd Festival of the Plough 2013 by Anthony Catherall Opening at 10:00 hrs, this years Festival of the Plough will be bigger than ever, having new attractions for the thousands of people planning to attend at DN9 1DD, so set your sat-nav and come early.

There's nothing like cheery bands to brighten up the day, so enjoy two of them. Static are the Armthorpe & Elmfield Brass Band and The Bluebell Band, part of the programme below. Always a favourite for children and back again, the vintage 'Gallopers & Swings'. Several huge marquees will be packed with all types of must see items, 25 trade stands are currently booked, the poultry tent will have up to 400 hens, the model and craft tents will be packed with dedicated enthusiasts, alongside their exhibits, superb beer and refreshments also provided.

Outside we have 52 ploughing entries in the tractor section alone. Fourteen magnificent shire horses will take pride of place, ploughing in pairs, great for photographic opportunities, but please no FLASH. Close-by will be 70 'vintage vehicles', and new this year a 'brick lifting' competition for men and women. Also new in 2013, we have a Tug 'O' War competition, more entries are invited call Tim, on 07533 103021 or Eleanor, 07875 359748 an entry donation being just £15 per team. 'Junior John Edwards' with his ex-national team will join we hope join in the foray. To keep the youngsters amused will be another first with a 'climbing wall', supervised of course. The 'Yorkshire Hawk Lady' with her superb hawks are also in the fields.

Of great interest to the farming fraternity together with all our visitors, will be our committee chairman 80 year old (I can't believe it) John Smith will be ploughing with a 96 year old 'Overtime' tractor, should be fun to watch a true professional plougher.

Amateur Dramatics The Epworth Mowbray Players No. 15 by Anthony Catherall

As if vernal after hibernation (they have given no performance since March 1962) the Epworth Mowbray Players returned to the stage in March 1964 with one of their biggest performance successes in recent years.

In “Queen Elizabeth Slept Here” they had chosen a good play being the well known Talbot Rothwell comedy; the blend of established performers playing the strongest parts with several new faces, ensured that the audience grew at each successive performance.

The first night audience on Wednesday 18 March was deplorable and would have been almost non existent save for the attendance of a careers group of pupils from Misterton County Secondary School and Garthorpe Women’s Institute. The two new leading players David and Patricia Rowe were outstanding and a great addition to the Players strength. The performance of G. Haddon Archer as the autochthonous Mr. Kimber was a wonderful dry-witted characterisation. Newcomers John E. Odlin and Pat Wilson proved themselves and both were keyholed as future resources for the future.

Of equal calibre following many past performances were M. Clifford and Marjorie Trimingham together with Freda Matthews. John H. Williams was another whom the author provides with not a great deal of straw for the bricks. Gordon Fletcher was fortunate in being a little more germane to the proceedings. Joyce Battye as always with a stylised sniff, waddle and cockney accent, was always remember able.

Marie Coggan sounded rather too good for her brief moment and was always well worth a bigger part when the opportunity presented itself. Completing the cast young Roy Pape very much enjoyed the creation of diversions which, were he to indulge them elsewhere, would probably bring condign retribution. In her second production as producer Mary Housham deserved undivided credit for a well prepared presentation.

A charming view of West End circa 1930's prior to reaching Scawcett Lane. Top right was Flag Villa owned by Bob Ward, followed by son George who farmed at Scawcett, whilst William Garland rented Wards followed by the Widdowsons before they moved to West Butterwick. Charlie Day's house can be seen left with a person standing outside, whilst opposite is Ted Richardson's with the two chimneys. Outside Jabez Proudley's, we can see a famer with his horse and foal. Behind outside the Richardson's is what was known then as a 'One Horse Farmer' with his trailer attached. A low trailer allowed the farmer to load his plough together with his chains and other equipment easily. A similar view below in March 2013, the road now having a nice smooth clean surface.

A large party of members of the Epworth and District Flower Club met near Rotherham on a

beautiful July evening to visit Winthrop Park. Some months earlier the group had listened to an illustrated talk about the conception and development of the facility and arrangements were made for the visit.

The publicity for the garden states that it “has been created from a former sewage treatment works” and was inspired by a local couple who “sought to bring…nature therapy to others in the community.” After a welcome the group divided into two and was conducted around by two of the founders.

We began by visiting the sensory garden and immediately experienced the beautiful perfume of roses. Our guide explained how the garden was created to be wheelchair friendly and how plants of varying textures had been selected. Original professional advice had suggested plants should be placed in colour blocks which are pleasing to the eye. This was obvious but so too, on such a beautiful evening, was the variety of shades of green in the plants, shrubs and trees. We were told about some glass ornaments which had been loaned originally but Shh! no-one returned to reclaim them and the tale behind two rather large stone features which stood amongst the wonderful delphiniums and had been given by a quarry at Ulley.

Recycling has been a major part of the philosophy of the park and paths and stone edges have been re-used. A “sculpture” garden has been created in one area and it was built on the top of a buried car. When presumably a window broke in the submerged vehicle so an area of the garden sank too! A stone sculpture has been donated in the shape of a “pinecone” but not an immediately obvious variety, a Lawson’s cypress cone. We were told about a blind visitor who enjoyed touching the twisted willow and we saw a red breeze block wall which was suggested for those with visual impairment. The wall was fronted with some beautifully manicured trees and its other side was used to create a wonderful rockery with a water feature flowing through it.

Further areas of the garden followed different themes. One area housed a rather large and fascinating elephant, another was on a Japanese theme, a sheepdog and a sheep played on a wonderfully tended lawn and finally we spiralled through the New Zealand garden which was created to encourage the idea of ferns unfurling.

Then there was a little time to shop in the craft and Old Curiosity shops before gathering for a delicious tea.

Debbie Beecher expressed the thanks of the group and spoke everyone’s thoughts when she told our host how she had undersold the garden when she had been to visit and talk to our group.

The garden is open to the public between 1st April and 31st October daily except Saturday and has no admission fee. It comes highly recommended and it is difficult to believe it was created from dereliction and after adversity.

The Epworth and District Flower Club will next meet in the usual place in Haxey, The Stephen Jones Community Hall at 7.30 on Monday, 9th September when Val Dukes will demonstrate on the theme “Naughty Ladies”. The October meeting on 14th will be a workshop and on November 11th we hold our annual Open Meeting with a national demonstrator on the theme “Autumn into Christmas” All are welcome to join us.

Back to school....a new year, a new start A new year at South Axholme means a new year to get involved. There are numerous after school and in school clubs for all pupils to participate in. From traditional sporting activities to bands for all genres of music, there is guaranteed to be something for every pupil in every year. There are more academic clubs available such as science club for keen students who wish to broaden their knowledge and enjoy extra experience and receive guidance outside of curriculum lessons. Revision is available to all those students with upcoming exams who wish for additional revision sessions either during lunchtimes or after school.

Clubs are a great way to be involved and develop social skills and teamwork, more importantly it shows your level of dedication and commitment. How do you like your beef?

This summer scientists developed a synthetic meat, that was created into a burger. Whilst the meat as developed in the laboratory was said to be the same as that bought at the butchers, there was a problem.

It lacked two things—flavour and colour.

To the palette of the eater though it was nutritionally the same as any meat, it had little taste, so herbs and flavouring were added. Also visually a pale colour was not appetising so a beetroot additive was used to make it appear what consumers expect of fresh meat, bright red.

So two things were needed—flavour and colour. And it is those things that distinguish us as individual men and women. For though we are in essence very much the same biologically, it is the flavour and colour that we have in our temperaments and personalities that make us the special people that we are.

In God’s eyes we are all wonderful and made in His own image. We are called His handiwork, in the same way that we make and create items. The items we make may not be perfect, but they are ours and it is the particular colour and flavour we give them that endows them with individuality.

We thank God for the flavour he gives us, some artists, some scientists, and the colour of our emotions some placid and some volatile.

The 3 race for life's I did went very well. The Doncaster 5k being the most gruelling as it was so hot & no shade! But I did it in a respectable time of 25.36, there were tears before I set off. It was very emotional.

The Clumber park 10k on Saturday morning was much cooler, a bit of welcomed rain too, I ran this with Claire Steele & a lovely 'lady' called Kev.....we'll say no more. Finished that in 52.44.

The afternoon saw the rest of Treeman's Half Pinters running/ jogging & walking the 5k at Clumber Park.

There were 20 of us that ran in dad's memory, so nice to have so much support. Also the people who were 'behind the scenes' as it were, chauffeuring, making cups of tea & providing sandwiches we could not have done it without you. And a big thank you to my partner & my little boy who came & supported me with all the races!

We raised £1478.50 for Race For Life, we are so proud & massively pleased with it.

Treeman's Fundraiser was manic! Run off our feet all day. Huge thanks to all the bands who played for us, thanks to The Crown Inn for letting us hold the event there & to everyone who helped put the marquee up & set up. To all who donated raffle & auction prizes, lights, generators, bouncy castles, tables, chairs, all the stalls especially the tombola stall, sweet stall, cake stall, raffle ticket stall thank you & thanks to all who donated their time! Ladies manning the inflatables, you had a hard job, but did it fabulously, parking attendants, generator monitors. Face & Body painters, everyone looked wonderful! And a huge thank you to everyone who came to support us & some i know travelled a fair way to be there. A special thank you goes to Alisdair, who unveiled & organised Treeman's Chair. Alisdair had a bespoke chair made in his memory which sits at the pub. Tears were flowing when we saw it, beautiful! Another thank you goes out to all who chipped for my drink! I was presented with two bottles of champagne, a bottle of wine & flowers! You are all so generous.

The event itself raised £5516.38 for Ward 18 (Oncology & Haematology)in Scunthorpe. I've taken over £4400 to them already, I'm waiting on the rest of the auction money to come in and I will then present that to them.

I've been asked if I will organise it again for next year................. did I hear someone say Tree Fest? We shall see.

Trentside Federation School News – St Martin’s Church of England Primary School, Owston Ferry and West Butterwick Church of England Primary School The Summer Holidays finally arrived after an extremely active and enjoyable final few weeks. St Martin’s School held an Enterprise Day which provided the pupils with an opportunity to develop team skills and business acumen! Teams of mixed age pupils from Reception right through to Year 6 were set the challenge of creating their own company, designing their own ‘sweetie’ product, producing the confectionary and its packaging then marketing it to an audience and a panel of judges. The prize was much coveted – being able to ‘run the school’ for the afternoon of the penultimate day of term! Competition was fierce and the judges had a very difficult job. The sweets were well made using only the finest ingredients, the packaging was carefully designed and the marketing was professionally delivered by all groups concerned.

What an ‘enterprising’ lot we have at St Martin’s!

West Butterwick’s Lighting the Candle group (Pupil Worship-Leaders) kept itself very busy right up until the last few weeks of term as they planned and led a Community Worship in St Mary’s Church focussing on ‘Daniel in the Lions’ Pit’. The theme was ‘Trust in God’. The group ran a quiz, inviting the congregation to ‘reflect and respond’ as part of the service and a number of the children enjoyed having their faces painted as lions.

A very special project for West Butterwick School, this academic year, has been linked in to the renovation of the windmill on North Street belonging to Coggon Bros Farm. The pupils have worked on putting together a time capsule and had the opportunity to visit the windmill in its renewed splendour. Nick Coggon gave a very informative talk on the history of the windmill and the Coggon Family’s farming history over the years. John Coggon showed the children around the farm and they learned all about growing and selling potatoes! Coggon Bros generously gave all of the visiting pupils and staff a commemorative mug. It was a very enjoyable educational visit and we thank the Coggon Family for involving the school in such a memorable and enjoyable historical project.

Both schools’ terms ended with the traditional Leavers’ Services held at St Mary’s Church, West Butterwick and St Martin’s Church Owston Ferry. West Butterwick Year Six prize-winners were :- Zack Chad – Pupils’ Pupil. Alex Wallace-Coyle was awarded the Stephen Dawson Achievement Prize. Stephen Dawson is a past-pupil of West Butterwick Primary School who served in the Royal Navy, tragically losing his life in active service during the Falklands Conflict, sailing on HMS Coventry. Stephen was just 11 days short of his 23rd birthday when he died and we always remember him with the presentation of his award dedicated to progress and achievement. Owen Ericson – Sportsmanship, Cameron Ericson – Modern Foreign Languages, Phoenix – Creativity, Lewis Whipham - Challenge Cup, Rhiannan Chad – Service to the School. Achievement prizes (Reception – Year 6) were also awarded to Ruby, Chloe S, Emily, Joseph, Daniel, Alex and Lewis.

St Martin’s Year Six prize-winners were :- Lyle Dance Maths Shield – George Warman, Sports Cup – Thomas Latham, Music – Sam and Jimmy Smith, Ibbotson Literacy Award – Connie Greig, Service to the School – Ben Carby and Brittany Wootton, Ben Parkinson Challenge Award – Rogeuan. The Ben Parkinson trophy recognises and celebrates the inspirational qualities that Lance Bombardier Ben Parkinson has shown since being very badly injured in a bomb blast in Afghanistan – courage, resilience, tenacity and positivity, to name but a few. Other Achievement prize-winners (Reception – Year 6) were Leon, Lily, Harry S, Daniel D, Abigail P, Harry W and Angel.

We wish all of our Year 6 Leavers the very best at their new schools (South Axholme Academy and Queen Elizabeth’s High School) and we look forward to the new Autumn Term which starts on Tuesday 3 rd September.

The Apple of Your Isle As the stifling heat of July has given way to more bearable temperatures in the latter part of the summer it is time for gardeners and apple growers to check how well their apple crop is looking.

Do you have apples and pears in your garden that you don’t know what to do with? Are you fed up with making yet more apple pies or apple chutney?

Well, a group of fruit growers in the Isle of Axholme formed the Apple of Your Isle last year to help prevent all that fruit going to waste, We are bringing you the chance to turn your own apples – and pears – into juice using your equipment. As well as the fun of doing that, you get the added bonus of taking your own juice home!

After the success of the Apple Pressing Days last year, we have organised another 2 Apple Pressing Days this year. The first is at 1 Battle Green, Epworth DN9 1JT on Saturday 28 th of September, and the second on Saturday 19th of October at Orchard House, 11 Commonside, Crowle DN17 4EX. They each run from 10am to 4pm.

You will be able to take your fruit along at a pre-booked time and be shown how to press it into juice.

You can then carry out the whole process yourself. And then the best part of all - you will be able to take away the juice and drink it at home. And all for a nominal fee of £5 for a half hour.

Members of the group will be on hand at the Apple Pressing Days to help and guide you and also to talk about the process for making and storing apple juice. They will also happily talk about how to turn your juice into cider. You will be able to buy apple produce and see apple recipes.

Alternatively, you might like to hire our apple press and scratter so that you can press your own fruit at home.

A sign of the times Dear readers, The DfT (Department for Transport) announced the intention to review traffic signs in a bid to reduce street clutter, congestion, and C02 emissions. The review; maintaining good traffic signing makes driving safer and less stressful. Too much “clutter” means motorists sometimes tend to ignore signs – but they are essential for smooth and safe driving. Signage has become diverse and motorists are expected to remember far more signs than ever before. Motorists who years ago studied the Highway Code to pass their driving test rarely revisit the rules to refresh their memory on how to understand signage. It is highly unlikely that any motorist will know every sign – but motorists really need to know how the shape and colour of the sign effects what it is saying. Here are some reminders how to “decode” traffic signs and how to act on them.

Understanding the shapes.

The shape of the sign indicates if it is either compulsory or advisory. Round signs, such as speed limit signs, are giving orders, triangles are there to give a warning i.e. give way or roundabout ahead, rectangle signs give information i.e. directions.

Know your colours.

The colours used within a sign gives you further information. Red rings are regulatory signs and tell you what you must not do i.e. exceed 30mph, blue signs are used for information, except on motorways when they are used for directions, green rectangles are used to give directions on primary routes, brown rectangles indicate a tourist attraction.

Variable message signs. (VMS) VMS provide motorists with information and advice about emergencies, incidents and network management. Taking notice and acting on the information provided by the VMS motorists improves safety and minimises the impact of congestion.
