St Andrew’s Church Epworth West Window-The west window which is situated within the tower has been removed to the workshop of Martin Johnson & Co of York for restoration work. This window has been in a poor state for many years and in recent years it has been subject to vandalism and was partly boarded off.

When the window is reinstated it will be seen more prominently within the church owing to the tower screen being removed during the restoration. An open ringing gallery will facilitate this!

William Constable the Cambridge stained glass artist was responsible for the introduction of the window to the church in Victorian times. There are also a number of other Constable windows in the Church.

Members of Parochial Church Council have recently visited York to view the window and were very impressed with the workmanship of Martin Johnson & CO. Regrettably there is evidence of poor workmanship in a number of pieces of glass replaced by others over the years.

It has been decided to replace all of the offending pieces of glass in order that the window is returned in pristine condition. On return the window will have mesh guards fitted to it to protect it from future vandalism.

Unfortunately the cost has risen somewhat above the funding available. The total cost will be £11,380 which includes a small repair to the stained glass window at the western end of the south aisle. Members of the Restoration Committee have discussed the funded requirement and considered it appropriate to

invite members of the community to donate towards the window. You may specifically wish to remember a loved one by your donation.

Any person donating will have their names recorded in a book but excluding the amount given. The book will also name persons contributing to the project for other reasons and those involved in the production of the heritage tiles.

Alternatively you may wish to contribute to the new chairs or the welcome desk.

Members of the Epworth Heritage Forum are planning to hold an arts festival during the Spring Bank Holiday of 25th, 26th and 27th May 2013. Events are expected to take place in the reordered St Andrew's Church, Wesley Memorial Church, Old Rectory and the Kings Head Croft. Evening musical concerts are being scheduled for St Andrew's Church and the Wesley Memorial Church.

St Andrew's is giving consideration to holding an exhibition of local artists work to be launched during the arts festival and spanning a couple of weeks. Local artists are requested to express an interest by contacting Melvyn Rose.

Having heard the sad news of the passing of Mr John Roberts I would like to pass on my sincere condolences to his wife, family and friends. Isle Group of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust News Bird Identification On Thursday 4th October 2012 our indoor meetings get underway with an interesting talk on recognition of birds that you can come across when out and about in the Lincolnshire area.

Our guest speaker is Andy Sharpe who is the Voluntary reserve manager at Farr Ings National Nature Reserve where he also runs a local bird group.

We look forward to welcoming all regular members and new visitors.

All our indoor meetings which commence in October are held in the Stephen Jones Hall at the rear of the Methodist Chapel, Low Street, Haxey on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome, you don’t have to be a member. Work has already started with partnerships involving police, Safer Neighbourhoods and North Lincolnshire Homes and this work is on-going. There have recently been several arrests made which have resulted in some sentences being given at court and other matters have on-going police enquiries. I would like anyone with any information, concerns or is the victim of any instances please ring the police on 101 (Humberside not South Yorkshire) or if an emergency 999, or you can always pass information anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. UPDATE; - There have been further arrests regarding the recent thefts which have seen properties in the Westgate Road area also being targeted. If you see anything or anyone suspicious please ring it in rather than wondering whether you should or not. It is far better that we know at the time. Patrols from both Neighbourhood and Incident response continue to patrol the areas.

Countrywatch Issues.

Calls for service to areas of land both owned and used by the farming community have occurred including offences of Criminal Damage, theft, Poaching, off road bikes, trespassers on land with dogs. Times vary throughout the 24 hour period. A considerable amount of work and liaison has been built between Neighbourhood staff and the owners and staff working on land to engage them and to identify where offences and offenders are committing these acts and routes they use. UPDATE;- Now we are entering the busy season for all farmers we anticipate calls for service to increase and would encourage anyone to contact the police at the time they see anything suspicious. We have seen a lot of activity in the Brigg and Barton rural areas, at this time the Isle has not been affected but this may not remain the same throughout the next few months. We also were in attendance at the Epworth Show on Bank Holiday Monday with our usual marquee and engaged with a lot of the local and not so local community, the rain held off for a good while and I hope that the committee have been pleased with all their efforts and that the attendance was what they expected. We also promoted Countrywatch and in particular tried to engage with the equine community regarding any issues they had with equine crime.

Harris Gardens- Anti-social behaviour. Youths congregating in the park at the top of Harris Gardens and acting in an anti-social behaviour which involves criminal damage to cars in the vicinity and eggs being thrown at properties nearby. Calls for service have recently been received which have involved some youths acting in an in-considerate manner in the cul-de-sac area. Times of this type of behaviour occurring is after 9pm mainly on a Tuesday and Wednesday night.

UPDATE:- We have visited the area and spoken to youths seen there who were polite and happy to listen to what we there for. We have not received any further calls or information regarding issues in this area. We will continue to monitor the area to maintain that the issue does not return.

Recent Issues RECENT CRIME IN BELTON = Three males in total have been arrested for recent crimes involving thefts from garages and sheds. On-going enquiries continue. MANNER OF DRIVING = A male from Belton was issued with a Section 59 warning regarding the way he was driving his motor vehicle on the road in the Belton area. MALE ARRESTED FOR OFFENCES IN THE GOOLE POLICING AREA = A male was located at a property in Belton after being wanted for questioning by police in the Goole policing area for offences 12 damage Pleaseand mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements of criminal witness intimidation.

I would lik e to dedicate this article to Miss Marjorie Trimingham who at 98 liv es quietly and peacefully in Graizelound. Thank y ou Marjorie I hav e learnt so much from you locally , as did her many infant pupils in Epworth.

Considerable cosmetic changes are noticed in these colour and black and white photographs of two well k nown Epworth buildings separated by 103 y ears. The new building of the Primitiv e Methodist Sunday School right abov e in Station Road Epworth, was contracted to Messer's W alk er (brick lay er) & Trimingham (joiner) at a sum of ÂŁ550.00. The architect was Mr. W . Greenfield of Boston. In the top right photograph standing on the left of we see Mr. Herbert Trimingham with his team of six joiners outside the newly constructed Sunday School. The named P.M.S.S. etched in the curv ed lintel abov e the central window still surv iv es. The Sunday School was officially opened by Mrs T. Phillips, of Hull on 23 February 1910. During her opening speech Mrs Phillips said, "In the hope that the children who pass over this threshol d may be trained in the way of truth and li ght" Later at a reception that ev ening The Rev . J. Hodges expressed his deep admiration for the magnificent work the Minister for Epworth Rev . P.H. Powell was doing throughout the Epworth circuit.

A similar project was completed by the same W alk er & Trimingham partnership at Haxey being a Primitiv e Methodist C hapel also built in 1909 and opened on the 17 Nov ember, at a cost of ÂŁ700. 00. Herbert Trimingham both farmer and joiner was a most upstanding member of the Epworth community tak ing v arious positions therein.. He and all his family were dedicated Methodists. Herbert was also a committed official on the (N.F.U) The National Farmers Union. He enjoy ed his joinery work , regularly adv ertising his exquisitely an expertly constructed chick en houses in the Epworth Bells (see drawings of them in 1909 issues of the 'Bells' in the Mechanics Institute) he also constructed quality coffins for use by the local undertak er.

Academy Status Epworth Primary School converted to being an Academy on 1st September. We converted as an independent state school, receiving our funding directly from the Government and not through the Local Authority.

School staff and governors have been working very hard with our lawyers over the last few months to prepare for the move to Academy status. We were very pleased that the Government has approved the move and signed all the agreements to enable us to become an Academy. As a ‘school performing well’ we have met the Government’s criteria to convert on our own without the need for a sponsor. This means we will be able to maintain our independence and ethos serving the local community of Epworth.

We are excited by the opportunities Academy status will bring to the school. While we have more responsibility and wont be so reliant on the Local Authority, we will also have more autonomy and flexibility to further develop the school and raise standards for pupils. We will be able to make decisions about our funding at the local level and will be able to purchase the services that best meet our needs.

Epworth Primary was just one of 282 schools that became an Academy on the 1 st September. There are now 2309 Academies in England. Like the other new Academies, we know there will be many challenges ahead but we are determined to continue on our journey to make Epworth Primary the best.

Gardening News Our school ‘Grounds Force’ team have just harvested our potatoes and carrots and our first batch of runner beans. The children are setting up a stall to sell the produce to parents after school. The money raised will be going to support our sponsored child, Allan, a six year old boy from Uganda.

The ‘Grounds Force’ team is a group of children that work at lunchtime to help improve the school grounds by planting on our flower and vegetable beds. They all do a great job.

The Cardinal Sin Last time I wrote in this excellent publication Arrow, I committed the cardinal sin of writing about my family. My youngest son was approached by several people, commiserating with him about what his Dad had written. I apologise to him profusely. Suffice it to say that since then he has enjoyed a few days holiday, been for a day to the Paralympics in London with a brother, has been sent work by his University and is now working through a booklist.

He is away for several weeks and will miss out at All Saints Church on our Pet Service (7th October), Harvest Festival (14th October), All Saints Sunday (4th November) and Remembrance Sunday (11th November). It’s that time of year when there is a ‘special’ Sunday virtually every week! It’s just as well the Games are over so as not to detract the Rector from his work!

So why not come to ‘A Church Near You’ for a special service in this season of special services. In particular, as you look around at creation in this Harvest season, let God shout out to you not in criticism, but in warm affection.

THREE FRUITS It is the time if year for gathering in the harvest. The result of what

we have sown, or what we glean from hedgerows. A friend of mine delighted in his apple orchard and specialised in getting the right seed, or stock to produce the choicest fruit. For him ‘Howgate Wonder’ as a strain of apple tree was unsurpassed.

Heaven in his eyes was full of ‘Howgate Wonder’!

Some fruit is not so distinctive though. As a young boy I used to help my great aunt and uncle on a smallholding on the North Staffordshire Moorlands to gather in the hay harvest. It was thirsty and hungry work, and every year the reward was the same – a harvest tea of bread and butter and Co-op three fruit jam. It tasted marvellous. I’m never sure which three fruits made the jam but it had a plummy pineapple feel to it. I can taste it now.

For the Christian there are three fruits that the Apostle Paul told the Colossians, the fruits of faith hope and love. Whatever our personal taste for this three fruit experience, and we will all have our different taste, one of the fruits –never fails. It is love. Though faith and hope are important love was, is and continues to be the true Christian harvest.

TRENTSIDE FEDERATION SCHOOL NEWS Following our Summer Break we have returned refreshed for the new academic year. Three new teachers have joined our team at St Martin’s – Mrs Victoria Priestley (Years 5&6), Miss Sophie Brown (Years 3&4) and Mrs Christina Brinkley (Foundation Stage).

At the end of the first week back both schools had enjoyed a very productive week. St Martin’s Class 4 (Years 5&6) is constructing a large scale steam train (to be known as the ‘Ferry Flyer’) linked to their literacy studies based around The Railway Children by E Nesbit and their historical research in connection with the life and times of Robert Stephenson. The study of Italian painter Giuseppe Arcimboldi by West Butterwick Infants fits in rather well with our forthcoming Harvest Festival.

This Italian painter, born in 1527, was best known for creating imaginative portrait heads made entirely of fruit, vegetables, flowers, and fish. He arranged these objects on the canvas in such a way that they formed a recognisable likeness of the portrait’s subject – very clever! Staying with the Harvest theme, West Butterwick Infants are also going to be making seed shaker musical instruments, exploring the various materials that may be used to do this. Our rural heritage, here on the Isle of Axholme, will be a focus this Autumn in both classes at West Butterwick. Key Stage 1 pupils in Mrs Clipsham’s class will make a comparison of local farming with the farming methods that were used in Ancient Egypt. I think this will prove to be a very interesting project! Mr Cross’ Juniors in Class 2 are going to become incredibly knowledgeable about France this term, as their cross-curricular studies prominently feature this country. Over the coming weeks, Key Stage 2 will be taking a close look at French cuisine, noting similarities and differences with English food. They will consider the importance of food in France and its relationships with the different regions. Geographically, pupils have already become familiar with the regions, creating a three dimensional map.

This year, through our Harvest Festival Services, we will be raising money for the charity ‘Anthony Nolan’.

Anthony Nolan is a charity dedicated to supporting childhood leukaemia sufferers in the UK, saving lives of people with blood cancer. This charity was founded almost 40 years ago by Shirley Nolan, in honour of her son. The charity finds incredible individuals willing to donate blood stem cells to save the lives of people with blood cancer. Since setting up this charity, 10,000 people have received transplants that have given them a chance of life. Leukaemia is the biggest childhood cancer in the UK.

We have a number of additional events planned in for this term’s learning, such as a Zulu Workshop, St Martin’s Service of Remembrance, Methodist Chapel Christmas Tree Festival, educational visits to Pink Pig Farm and the National Railway Museum in York as well as our end of term Christmas Services.

Both schools in our Federation will continue to receive specialist music tuition. We look forward to hearing some of the wonderful trumpet and recorder playing in our church services and special assemblies!

Pupils also continue to learn French from Infants right through to Year 6. They are doing very well in connection with this. Bon effort!

Every Friday morning, St Martin’s school holds a special ‘Head Teacher Awards’ Assembly & Worship. We got off to a really great start with this, first week back, with awards, presented to Declan Foley, Abigail Platt, Joshua Dixon, Thea Hudson, Ethan Royston Lee and Natalie Trewick.

News from Belton All Saints Church of England Primary School The new school year has had an excellent start with pupils and staff settling into their new classes. Our Year 6 pupils are currently looking at their new roles and responsibilities within school, Team Captains have been elected along with the Year 6 School Council Representatives. Every class will have a representative on our School Council which meets regularly to bring ideas and views from pupils to the Senior Leadership Team. The School Council reps also act as ambassadors for the school; meeting visitors and showing them around the school; they even get involved in school appointments, putting their own question to perspective job candidates.

Pupils in Key Stage 1 have had a busy start to the new term. As the starting point to their topic on Journeys they have been designing and making their own vehicles complete with working wheels. Pupils will be going on to test how well these vehicles perform.

Earlier in the year, as part of our Diamond Jubilee celebrations the children entered a competition, run through ‘Vision for Education’, to design a commemorative plate. More than 1200 entries were received and we were delighted when we heard that Jay Cuckson, then in our Reception class, had won first prize in the under 7’s section. Louise Ramson, from Vision, came into school to present Jay with a china version of his design along with an art kit. Jay also won £150 for the school and he has helped us choose some additional art resources which the whole school will be able to enjoy.

Match Report for the under 9's Result ....

Epworth Colt's 8 - 0 Barton Rhino's Both teams started lively, but it was the Epworth Keeper Louis Turley that keep Epworth in the game with some stunning saves and brave ball collections at strikers feet.

Both defenders Dan Hellewell and Captain for the first half Max Bradwell linked well together, and they to had to work hard and get in shot stopping tackles.

Most of the first period of the first half was at the Epworth end, but with 10 minutes left of the first half Oliver Kirwin broken through the midfield and powered forward to the edge of the box where he delivered a first time strike that nestled into the roof of the net giving the keeper no chance. Barton still pushed forward and half time needed to come quick so Epworth could re-group The second half saw a new Epworth Colts take the field with confidence and vigour. Josh Willerton was the next to get on the score sheet with a slick one two with Rhys Stanton and a power drive into the top of the net. Football was improving every moment Epworth had the ball and Jack Cook stepped up next to smash the ball into the back of the net after leaving his marker in his wake.

Oliver Kirwin and Jarred Allen were coursing the Barton midfield and defence more problems when they can back on and linked well for the fourth goal which came from good link up play and another cracking shot by man of the match Oliver Kirwin from outside the box. Epworth managed to get a corner midway through the second half and as Barton tried to clear it , it fell to Scott Ogden who blasted the ball from 30 yards into the bottom left hand corner of the net. Barton didn't give up though and had a few attacks, but with Tristan Donner and Scott at the back and the second half captain in Jake Hellewell, Epworth just couldn't be broken. Tristan made all his tackles count and Jake pulled off a couple of good saves to deny the Barton Strikers. With 10 minutes left on the clock Epworth went into overdrive with Bradley Barnes getting through the back line and slotting the ball passed the oncoming keeper. Josh Willerton not to be outdone by Olly got his second with a link up play with James Kilty-Stapleton which saw the keeper beaten in the right corner. With less than two miknutes left, James Kilty-Stapleton was the last to make his mark on the score sheet with his trade mark close range shot into the bottom right.

Axholme Camera Club News The first meeting of the new season was on Wednesday the 5th September, the Chairman - Geoff Trinder opened proceedings with a very sad announcement. One of our long serving honorary members, Mr John Roberts passed away early morning of the 30th August 2012. A one minutes silence was held in order to remember John's contributions to Haxey community and the Camera Club.

John had been fighting heart problems and had recently undergone two operations. He was a very active Methodist and would regularly conduct the services at the Methodist Church in Haxey, he was a very committed fund raiser and organised photographic slide shows throughout the year to assist in the funding of the church. In his working life John was an Engineer with the NCB with the responsibilities for the Coal Washing Plants in Yorkshire. It goes without saying that John will be sadly missed, our thoughts and best wishes are with his wife Betty, and his family at this most distressing time.

The remainder of the evening was taken up with discussions on the planned programme and the development of our new web-site. The 2012-13 program has the usual competitions plus a very good selection of highly experienced photography speakers with confirmed dates through the year.

The Club's Web-site organiser, Simon Knight spent sometime explaining the ins and outs of what he was trying to establish in order to offer the members a better and more friendly web site.

Driving at Night

Dear readers, The fundamental rule of Advanced Driving – you must be able to stop within the distance you can see to be clear this applies equally when driving at night.

Away from street lighting, your vision will be limited to the range of your headlights and this varies massively between dipped and full-beam. Therefore, it makes sense that you slow down when you’re driving on dipped headlights. If you find your speed creeping up, remind yourself how dangerous it would be if you suddenly came across, a tyre carcass, a pedestrian, a stray animal or even a pallet off an HGV in your headlight beam, could you STOP! If your headlights illuminate 40 meters ahead, you’ll have just 1.5 seconds to react and stop at 60mph! Realistically, you’ll still be travelling at 40mph when you hit the obstruction!!

Drive on full beam whenever possible but always think about other road users. Dip your lights as late as you possibly can, ensuring that you do not dazzle anyone and remembering that, at night, your lights give other road users the earliest warning of your presence. Clean your lights regularly as road grime quickly reduces their effectiveness and the distance you can see ahead clearly.

If an approaching car forgets to dip, glance immediately towards the side of the road to avoid being temporarily blinded. On dual carriageways at 70mph you cover 31 metres (about 7 car lengths) per second, so even if it takes only five seconds for your vision to clear fully you’ll have covered a distance equivalent to one and a half football pitches!

Advanced drivers know that driving in the dark isn’t all danger and drawbacks.

Empty night-time roads make journeys quicker and less stressful: car headlights give early warning of their presence and the skilled driver can even use other vehicles headlight beams to work out where the road goes next.

Don’t be complacent though, speed is more difficult to judge New Car Tyres. in the dark – especially approach speeds – so you should still Puncture Repairs. take care and adhere to all the daylight driving rules.

Dazzle from following vehicles can be just as blinding but the Wheel Balancing. Truck Tyres effect can usually be “minimised” using the dipping function on ALL AT GREAT PRICES!! your interior mirror, which is now standard on most modern cars.

Don’t forget to return the mirror to its “normal position” once the dazzle has subsided With practice, avoidance technique becomes habit. While such careless driving can be irritating, never stay on full-beam yourself to retaliate.
