Community News St Andrew’s Church Epworth, Harvest News- The traditional harvest

festival will this year take place on Sunday 4th October commencing at 10.30 am. This year the service will be a triple thanks giving as the recently restored peal of bells and organ will also be celebrated. Following on from the very successful project ‘Conserving and Sharing’ the Heritage Lottery Fund awarded a follow on grant to enable the work to be undertaken.

A faith lunch will follow the service to which all members of the community are invited to attend.

The October meeting of the West Butterwick and District Gardening Club takes place on Monday 5th October at West Butterwick Village Hall at 7.30 pm. The speaker is Don Witton and his subject is ‘Perennials throughout the year’.

Everyone is welcome – all ages and all levels of gardener Members £2, non members £3 The November meeting is a talk by Gail Summerfield entitled ‘Pride in the Fall’.

Folk Dancing in the Isle Awaken Village Interest in Dance – AVID – has been running informal folk dances each month in the Isle villages for the past 20 years. We meet at 8pm on a second Wednesday evening and in a different village each month. On 14th October we will be in Gringley on the Hill Village Hall and on 11th November we will be at the Imperial Hall, Epworth.

It costs £1 to join in. No experience is needed as guidance and tuition is on hand and welcome everyone. We have a lot of fun and get about 30 people each time. There is live music from the musicians who turn up as well as expert calling.

Girls from Epworth Primary Academy are taking part in the Lifestyle Challenge Team members Francesca Malam, Lydia Ingham, Emily Banks and Eleanor Lister have completed a number of activities. They walked the Humber Bridge for Breast Cancer and have raised over £400 so far. They helped out at residential homes Lindum Court and Nicholas House playing board games and painting nails. They have also helped with the Cats Protection in Belton, featured with Sue Reed.

On 5th Sept they are helping Sue on her stand at the Lex Fest.

In addition Francesca's sister Annabel decided she wanted to fund raise and walk the bridge with the girls so she set about raising over £90 for Cats Protection. Here she is presenting the money to Sue in Belton.

Full details can be viewed on www.humberside.police.uk Ongoing Issues Belton = Anti-social Behaviour in the Ashtree Close area. This area is being monitored both the Local Neighbourhood Team and other agencies such as North Lincolnshire Homes. Should any person be subject of any anti-social behaviour in this area do not hesitate to pick up the phone and contact Humberside Police on telephone number 101 or please call into your local police station at Epworth and speak to any member of the team. Office hours at the police station are Tuesdays and Thursdays 10am to 4pm.

Belton Greenway = There is still a decline for calls to this problem. The Local Neighbourhood Team are still monitoring this priority and pay regular patrols to this area.

Dwelling Burglaries = This continues to be an issue in the Central area of the Isle. Residents are again reminded to be extra vigilant regarding the security of their homes. In recent weeks several burglaries have occurred where not only has the property been attacked and items stolen. But the person(s) have stolen the occupant’s motor vehicle to take the stolen property away from the area. The police cannot stress enough that valuables such as jeweller/wallets and especially car keys are kept out of sight or taken upstairs with you when you retire for the evening.

Information In recent weeks there has been several reports regarding suspicious vehicles driving around areas looking at people’s homes and in their gardens. Also there has incidents of “Bogus/Rogue” traders operating in this area preying on vulnerable or elderly people. Please do not engage with people purporting to be workmen if you are in any doubt that they are acting suspiciously and are quoting unrealistic prices for work completed. If you see anything suspicious either person(s) or vehicles do not hesitate to contact Humberside Police on telephone number 101 in the case of Rogue Traders please obtain as much detail as possible and contact Trading Standards who are based within North Lincolnshire Council. *As always our non-emergency number is 101, and in an emergency please dial 999.

July 13th.

We left Brindisi. First we are all searched, my knife and lock and petrol lighter which you bought me darling years ago went. We travel by train this time, in cattle trucks, but much better than Lorries, more room and seats in.

By now I’ve seen a good bit of Italy, plenty of wild country, never seen anything grown but vines, in an odd field here and there. One could see a couple of oxen pulling some sort of plough.

The streets were dirty and the houses looked like second class wogs, the people did too, they sure looked in a terrible state, one wonders how they could last another year of war. As we passed by the houses, women and children would be stood at the doors, some laughing; some with tears in their eyes. I expect some had sons of their own POWs. Just glances in the houses showed concrete floors, old tables and wooden boxes, altogether very untidy. I wonder what they really thought of us, for what a sight we really looked. All of us wanted a shave; some had long beards, some had half a shirt on, some had slits in, and plenty without any at all. All kinds of head gear, from a toupee to a piece of rag. I myself had a piece of field dressing. Some had K.D. shorts, some long, and in the same state as the shirts. Footgear was the same. On one arm we had a top coat and the other a blanket, and a bundle slung over our backs, but it took more than that to get us down, we kept bursting into songs, big and small, walking in any order, it sure was a sight.

So after leaving Brindisi we arrive 24 hours later, travelling all night at Capua, Camp 66, near Naples. Search again, this time they take my Aspros, bandages which I had managed to keep, also a bottle of iodine what had been salvaged from the sea. Even took my bootlaces.

Once again we are put in tents, dirty places, but plenty of water for a change. What money we had we gave it in, and got a receipt for it, I handed in 95 pesetas.

We got three parcels a week between five men.

The first Sunday we were there a young man held a service, the first we had since been POW, a lot attended, I think that we all wanted to thank God, and sing his praise for bringing us safely through.

The biggest laugh we had was when we went to be debugged again, first we stripped all off, went into a place where we had every bit of hair off our head, could not have been much barer had they shaved it off. That’s the first time I had my hair cut naked. We then had hot showers, but even after that lots of us still had sand caked in what bit of hair that was left on, meanwhile our clothes were getting steamed, what was left, some of the chaps by now had nothing but a towel round their body, they had flogged everything for bread, and cigs off the guards. Shirts, socks, boots, fountain pens, rings, everything one could mention. the Ities wanted the clothing, they wore no socks, their boots were falling to pieces, their clothes shabby and torn, the price of the things were 3 loaves for a pair of socks, 6 for a pullover, 6 for boots, and 7 for a tin of coffee, by the way their loaves weighed just the same as a tin of cocoa. On the whole, the English man certainly surprised me, they stole their own mates stuff and flogged it to the Ities, that’s all I’ll say about it it’s not for me to judge them; there were also some decent chaps. I was then mating on with Les, Len and Bill; we were all on the same post, in the desert. After ten days we moved into huts which was much better with the lights in, they had to be out by 10.30pm. Double decked beds, me on the bottom, we had our first pay-day there, the first one wasn’t much, and by the way we get a (one) lira a day.

Above a Sunday afternoon in the mid 1920's, but where? The top of Westgate Road closer to Santoft and adjacent to the South Engine Drain. The locals men and boys of Belton always dressed up in their Sunday best in those days as they stand together outside the ‘Bridge Inn’, today a private residence aptly known as Bridge House.. The popular ale on tap was Warwick and Richardson, the Newark brewers who later fell under the control of 'Courage'. This group some with their bicycles, have finished their lunch time session and are ready on the forecourt with Jack Markham who stands 4th from right with his arms folded, he was the oldest of the group and kept order. It was always a local tradition after the session, to set up a square board with a central pole attached a length of string with a wooden ball on the end. On the board were placed skittles and wagers were placed on who would win, by knocking down as many as they could with one swing. Happy days at the Bridge Inn recalls Albert Morris, as we spent some quality time together. Much of Albert's life as an employee of the Internal Drainage Board, was keeping the South Engine Drain some 16.01 kilometres in length, clear of plant life with his mechanical digger. The pub closed forever in the early 1960’s, below we see the detached house in 2010 when it was on the market.

The bright new fresh and airy restaurant adjoining and complimenting their takeaway Fish 'n' Chip service is a pleasure to dine at. The room is lit by attractive lighting, and the walls are adorned by charming seascapes, historic mementoes and shortly to be joined by historic old photographs of the town. A fellow diner Caroline Collinson from Station Road, Epworth, summed it up by saying, "I wouldn't go anywhere else for my fish 'n' chips, always a warm welcome and amazing grub". Gayle Jenkinson (pictured below) from East Butterwick another diner, was suitably impressed saying how much she was enjoying her meal.

For me, I tried a large Cod with a non greasy, light thin crispy batter, covering flaky bright white fish that had a stunning taste. The chips using 'Accord' potatoes were especially tasty and to my liking, accompanied by a small dish of mushy peas, all for under seven pounds.

I was interested to learn that they use vegetable oils for cooking, with Jeanette making her own tartar sauce, also her popular fishcakes are made with an old family recipe There are several other options on the menu including a gluten free grilled fish and mushy peas, all non fattening. Many of their customers like scampi, here you have a choice of chips or salad. Alongside individual choices there are special deals on offer. I took away the memory, of a sincere motivated couple, a professional service, great food all linked to a very happy working and dining atmosphere.

This is the second time a restaurant has operated on this premise (thought to be built circa 1818), the first being when the Thompsons were the hosts in the 1940's and 50's.

I recommend you give it a try too.

ENJOY THE ISLE COUNTRYSIDE WHILST SUPPORTING A LOCAL COMMUNITY GROUP A local community group, Axholme Bridleways Association, welcomes guests to their meetings, which are approximately every six weeks. The Axholme Greenway project is one area the group is involved in, which will provide more safe, off-road routes for multi-users locally and will benefit future generations too. With this in mind, Axholme Bridleways Association wishes to involve cyclists, runners, walkers, dog walkers and riders in all its activities, some of which raise a few funds for local charities whilst helping our local community and visitors enjoy the wonderful countryside we are blessed with on the Isle. The group welcomes members who can give a small amount of time to jointly achieve great things.

Local speakers are invited to meetings and this year the group have enjoyed talks from Lyn Dobson of L4Learners Dog Training, Jodi Shanahan of Equo equestrian event online booking system, Hayley or Wellbeings Therapies, and local Paralympic Dressage hopeful Natasha Adkinson, who at just 21 years old has many wonderful achievements as a member of the GB Squad on the World Class Equestrian Programme.

Please come along and find out what is happening locally within the group and hear talks from interesting local people and organisations.

The last meeting of the year will be Monday 2 November 2015 at The Old School Inn, Epworth at 7.30pm.

What is your harvest?

Living as we do in an agricultural community we are fortunate that our community life is still characterised by agricultural events, such as the Isle of Axholme produce and crafts show, the Epworth show, and the Festival of the Plough. To some these are certain calendar markers, and the rain which we experienced on the day of the Epworth show only served to remind us of the importance of the seasons and climatic changes. It did not deter everybody! We hope the Festival of the Plough will be more fortunate.

I constantly observe and am reminded that farming and horticulture are far from fair weather occupations, and that the crops need both sun to ripen and the rain to grow. Some crops of course aren’t he better for frost.

Though to many today harvest is a spectator sport, we know that the harvest of our lives is precious too. Love, faith, hope and trust are qualities we all admire to various degrees. Robert Herrick the 17th century poet wrote of “the sure and sweet cement of love” that holds us, binds us, and protects us. That in itself is a good harvest.

Some years are good for spuds, some for apples, and some for soft fruit, but whatever this one is good for, may all our years, and all our lives be good for love—truly a sure and sweet cement.

TRENTSIDE FEDERATION SCHOOL NEWS West Butterwick and St Martin’s (Owston Ferry) C of E Primary Schools

Following our Summer Break we have returned refreshed for the new academic year. We have all made a positive and enthusiastic start.

There are plenty of interesting learning experiences unfolding at both schools since the beginning of the Autumn Term. West Butterwick Infants have started the term with the theme of ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’. Working in small teams, in ‘Design Technology’ lessons, these pupils have made bridge structures out of newspapers, with the challenge of ‘whose bridge is the strongest?’ : tested out by ‘numbers of cubes’ bridges could withstand.

West Butterwick Junior pupils are learning all about ‘Our Incredible World’, giving consideration to how natural forces have been shaping our planet for billions of years and the dramatic changes that are brought about through this. This thinking will be extended to ‘conservation of our planet’ and the resources that Earth offers. The art work linked to this has been most enjoyable so far.

Some of the youngest pupils at St Martin’s have been getting to grips this term with cycling, starting out on a ‘First Step Cycle – Pre Pedal Course’. This is a fun way for children to get active and keep fit. ‘Pre Pedal’ uses specialist Balance Bikes that don’t need pedals. The children concentrate on the core skills of balance and gross motor control needed to perfect riding without having to use stabilisers, which makes progression on to conventional bikes easier. There are a series of lessons planned over the next six weeks, led by qualified instructors.

Who knows – we may have the next Chris Froome or Bradley Wiggins right here, learning to cycle in Owston Ferry!

Both St Martin’s and West Butterwick are pleased to announce that they have been awarded GOLD in the Sainsbury’s School Games Mark – this is a Government-led awards scheme that rewards schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and in to the community.

Baking Club now runs at both schools and there are plans for African food tasting this term.

Thank you to ‘Nanna Cakes’ (Janet Foreman) for all of her input at St Martin’s and West Butterwick with the cooking and baking throughout the year.

At this time of year, we also run the School Councillor Elections. West Butterwick Councillors have been confirmed as :- Amy J Year 1, Lyla Rose Year 2, Harvey Year 3, Levi Year 4, Cerys Year 5 and Miya Year 6. We look forward to hearing about the forthcoming projects School Councillors are to be involved in. St Martin’s School Council will be confirmed shortly.

Harvest Festival Services will take place on Friday 2nd October (St Martin’s Church) and th Friday October (St Mary’s“The Church).
