Welcome to the October issue of Epworth&BeltonArrow

September as come and gone so quickly and we are now in to October, and YES my favorite time of year! A month of pumpkins and all things spice which means it can only be Halloween! There are 2 events in the Arrow this month advertising their Halloween events, so stay local and please give them some support!

On the front cover we have a brand new advertiser, SMW Fitness and Training. I am sure most of you on the Isle know Mr Watson, I for one know him from the primary school days of my son who is now 16! Sorry this may make you feel rather old!

We wish him all the best in his new venture, and I am 100 percent sure Mr Watson will do very well. As one profession loses a much admired school teacher, another profession is just waiting round the corner.

The November issue deadline for adverts and content is Wednesday 11th October. The Arrow will be delivered by the 1st November.

Enjoy your read.

What a fantastic family fun day we had at our ‘Seeds of Change’ event at Wesley Memorial Church Epworth in August. It was wonderful to share it with so many people of all ages from our community. We explored the theme of God’s wonderful creation and what we can do to protect it, through eco themed crafts, art activities, gardening, Bible stories performed by the ‘Open the Book’ team and parachute games. A lovely buffet lunch was provided for everyone. We were blessed with perfect weather, allowing us to have activities in the church gardens as well as in the church building.

It was a very practical day with lots to see and do. Hopefully the people who attended will keep the importance of the key message which was to change actions to greener, cleaner and more sustainable lifestyles for the sake of our planet and its future.

The team who planned and organised this successful day are already looking at the feedback forms and reflecting with the intention of doing a future event that we will endeavour to inform The Arrow of so… watch this space!

Doncaster Rambler’s Press Release – Epworth Circular

This Lincolnshire walk started from Epworth and explored the surrounding countryside. The route included Epworth Turbary Nature Reserve and along the way passed several windmills, some of which have been restored whilst others languish in decay.

After 18 walkers eventually found parking spaces! we gathered for the start of the walk in the very busy car park at the junction of Church Street and Market Place. We walked towards Albion Hill and onto Rectory Street where we passed the family home of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. Fire burnt down the original wooden rectory in 1709 and it was rebuilt in red brick. The home is now a museum. We also passed a statue erected in 2003 to honour John Wesley’s tercentenary.

Todays lovely, very chatty group of walkers, then turned onto a waymarked track past an old windmill and followed several farm tracks, one of which, by Skyers Farm, was completely blocked by a recently fallen tree, so we had to improvise by climbing over a couple of wooden fences! We eventually reached Epworth Turbary Nature Reserve for a lovely woodland walk ('turbary' being an old English word for a place where peat can be dug), which is of considerable historic and scientific interest, being one of the few relicts of raised bog in the area. Plant species include cotton grass, cross-leaved heath, meadow-rue and fen sedge. Breeding birds include teal, snipe, woodcock, longeared owl, tree pipit and both green and great-spotted woodpeckers. After a refreshment break, we continued on a lane to Sandhill Farm followed by more farm tracks back to Epworth. We stopped to admire a windmill close up before arriving back at Belton Road and the short walk back to Epworth village centre passing the impressive Wesley Memorial Methodist Church which was built in 1889 as a memorial to the contributions made by John and Charles Wesley to world religion.

1st Isle of Axholme BP Scouts

Summer in scouts looks much more outdoors than the rest of the year. As we prepare for our big, combined section camp (beavers, cubs, scouts and senior scouts) and Duke of Edinburgh assessed Expeditions, we spend much more time outside. Camp preparation involves making sure everyone has the skills needed to enjoy the camp. The older scouts get ready to run games and fun sessions for the younger ones, the younger ones get ready for first camps learning tent and packing skills. More to follow after camp (July 14-16th).

June also saw our annual Cublympics – we took to the field to compete in a range of sports day type activities but with a twist. Competition and sportsmanship at its best. Lots of fun! Due to a number of cubs moving up to scouts, there will be spaces opening up in cubs from September if your 8-11 year old would like to join. Contact Matthieu for more information.

The scouts have been revelling in the warmer weather, completing their kayak badge. We have joined Green Star Canoe club for training on a Monday evening in glorious sunshine (so warm, we have not needed wetsuits), to work towards our BCU 1* qualification equivalent. It involves safely getting into/ out of kayaks, paddle skills including a longer journey, and capsize drill.

Our Duke of Edinburgh group continue to train for their Bronze Award, preparations are well underway for their 2 day expedition in July. Menus have been chosen and stoves prepared, tents and rucksacks packed (everything they need for 2 days in the wilderness) and weighed to make sure it evenly distributed across the group. Campsites booked and maps annotated and routecards written.

We have recently been trying to raise our profile in the community as there are many young people who do not know what scouts is like and would be interested in joining. We have done an assembly in a local primary school, and community litter picking. On the weekend of July 1st our scout troop also had a presence at both Haxey Summer Feast and Misterton Gala.

Sections all meet at the Westwoodside Village Hall: (Cubs, Scouts and Senior Scouts) all meet on Monday evenings 6pm (Cubs), and 7pm (Scouts), and Beavers (tbc) probably on a Tuesday evening at 6pm (from September).

Woodall Spa Airfield Nature Reserve by Kevin

Thursday October 5th at 7.30pm

On Thursday October 5th we will be having an illustrated talk on the Woodall Spa Airfield nature reserve. This was the airfield that the Dam Busters flew from and later it was developed as a sand and gravel quarry. Now, as a nature reserve, it is becoming a haven for a variety of wildlife and the main path for visitors is the old runway. Kevin James, the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust warden responsible for its development, will explain what is being done on this reserve.

We meet at Belton All Saints Centre (Church Hall), Stocks Hill, Belton, DN9 1PE Everyone is welcome, you don't have to be a member of the Wildlife Trust so please come along and join us. Entrance fee is £1. There will be refreshments and a raffle. For further information about the local Trust group and their meetings please contact Tony Lee on 01427 753831 or Chris Trinder on 01427 872051.
